My Interview with MAX'S KANSAS CITY Legend, Peter Crowley.

- Max's Kansas City was a legendary club in NYC from 1965-1981. In this fun video, we travel to Vero Beach, Florida, to do an extensive interview with the man who booked the club in the pivotal punk years of 1975 until it closed in 1981, Peter Crowley. Max's was where Andy Warhol hung out in the 60's, where the New York Dolls and Alice Cooper got started in the early 70's, and lastly, when Peter Crowley took over in 1975, this is where NYC punk rock really took off.
Peter Crowley is a rock-n-roll legend. He managed Wayne County and The Electric Chairs - he even named the band! - and he ran two of the most important rock-n-roll clubs in NYC (apart from CBGB's) Mother's and Max's Kansas City. Learn about the early years of punk in NYC in this fascinating interview!
And if you want to see what Max's Kansas City looks like today, check out this video I did in June 2023, where we walk into the space that was once the legendary club. • Max's Kansas City and ...

That was great! I worked for Peter when he was at Max's, I did the listings, and designed a coupla album covers. Peter was a fun boss, he would arrive at work with his supply of pre-rolled skinny joints, that would mellow him out for the evening's events. your interview brought back a ton of memories. Thanks.
Wow, I'm so glad that someone who worked with Peter saw the video! Thanks so much for watching. It was an honor to chat with him. It must have been so fun to be involved in rocknroll at that time, and at such a great venue. Thanks again!
@@WhyNotGoPlaces Credit where it's due, that was a fun interview with fact not fiction... I'm the same guy who was very critical of your Maida Vale video, because of the fabrications.
Hi Barry, thanks for watching this one. Would you be interested in an interview? It would have to be Skype because I live in Florida. Thanks again. Maggie @@noopti
I wish we could get more first person info on Sid's live shows at Max's. These were historic shows. Nancy really did good getting a band together and getting him booked for shows. An amazing feat for 2 junkies and the state they were in
Thanks for tuning in again! Yes, he did have a great band, both at the Vicious White Kids show and at Max's. Steve Dior was excellent on guitar and Jerry Nolan on drums, what a fantastic choice. Peter Crowley didn't talk much about these shows. I got the feeling he didn't like them ,or Sid, but I'm not sure.
@@WhyNotGoPlaces I seen a good video on Jerry, he converted to Mormonism later in life, and was a volunteer at the churches library.
Also a shout out to your husband supporting your interest getting your videos out. My wife supports my love of airplanes but draws the line at the sex pistols, although she does like the art work on NMTB. My 9 year old great grand niece seems to like Sid live. I think its the YEAh Yeah guy! 😄 I Heard that that was Jerry's father!
@@winnipegperfectcircleflyin7859 thanks! It's nice to get family support. Joe is younger than me but he also loves the Pistols. He grew up with 2nd generation punk, circle jerks, black flag, etc. He loves joy division. Joe didn't know anything about Max's but he really liked hearing the stories from Peter. But he's a rocknroll person, like me. Not much else is played in our house.
Thank you Maggie, great interview, what an interesting guy.
Glad you liked it! I love talking with someone like him who was around during such an interesting time in rock history.
Love all your passion and information ❤
Thank you so much! Glad you liked this one.
Hiya! Omg I remember Mother’s! Now I’ll have to see which friends do & who we saw there. It was such an exciting time that we’d often go to every club, bar in one night as there was always someone playing; but sadly all my notes were stolen in May ‘90😢. Miss Max’s although I don’t remember it😂; I was having too much fun, oops. You mentioned some old punk bands I know, a few I dated a member (🤫🤐). The pic shown @ 26:14 the Ramones are to the right of Jayne County, looks like Tommy is giving Dee Dee bunny ears😅! To Tommy’s left, behind Jayne is Richard Hell. Brought back many fond memories as I was trying to find old photos for a massive project. TSMFS, great interview! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️🤘🦋🏍 PS whilst watching/ listening I found pics of my BFF who moved to Vero Beach from NY when we were 15-16 & stayed in touch until she sadly died of cancer in ‘96 (after giving birth to a beautiful baby girl 💔); bittersweet but lovely to see her smile, recall all the fun times, I’m blessed to have had her as a dear friend for over 2 decades😊.
Thanks so much for watching! Wow, you really experienced a great period in rock history! Mother's sounds like it was an amazing place, thanks to Peter. I love that photo too, with Wayne in front, and The Ramones, Richard Hell etc in the group. So glad you liked the video, RnR Rebel!
I am waiting for this one! Can not wait.I am waiting until tomorrow until after I get my Saturday chores done. Love love love Maggie!!!
Hi Tommy, Hope you enjoy it! It's not for everyone, but if you're curious about the early NYC punk scene and Max's, you'll like it. Peter goes into detail about the club's changes through the 70's. Have a good weekend.:)
@@WhyNotGoPlaces I loved it!!! Peter seems so cool! I've been fascinated for years about Max's. I remember at the time reading that it had closed and was so bummed that I would never have the chance to see a band there. A band I liked called The Bloodless Pharaohs played there and if I could ever get in a time machine, going to see them there would have been the first stop!
Thanks for this and all the trouble you and Joe the Lion went to in order to bring it to us. I loved how long it was! ALL of your segments need to be 90 minutes plus!
Love from Philly, Tommy
@@tommymaguire2839 so glad you liked it Tommy! I thought it might be too long, but Peter was so interesting I didn't want to cut much out.
Great interview and thanks Maggie, Very informative as usual and another interesting guest.!
Thanks!
Thank you! Great interview again!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great interview and very interesting. Thanks Stuart
Glad you enjoyed it, Stuart. Thanks for tuning in again!
Another grrat viseo Maggie, very interesting. I love you both chatting about Sids gigs.
All the best 🇬🇧
Glad you enjoyed it Andy!
Another brilliant one ❤
Great interview and upload Maggie. Love your channel. I had heard of this famous venue, but never knew the details of how legendary a venue it was! I learned a lot from watching this. How amazing to have hung out at that joint back in the day. So many characters and musical heroes hung out there.
Ps - i love the pistols song New York, lyrics are so sarcastic lol
Thanks for watching another one! I wish I could go back in time and hang out there. Such an amazing history. Yes, New York's lyrics are classic. I love that "Japan is a dishpan" line. Rotten is so great with words.
Maggie, this in not only a scoop, it's also informative, vibrant & interesting. It led me to reading up on Edie Sedgwick, the movie Ciao! Manhattan & other stuff too. As a Brit' American culture really fascinates me & this is so evocative & cool, as are you Sweetie.
Thanks for watching this one, Tom! Ciao Manhattan is very interesting to see, though sad because she was very messed up by that time. I had a great time talking with Peter. This interview is not for everyone, but I left in most of what he said because if people are into Max's and early NYC punk, they might like it. Thanks again!
@@WhyNotGoPlaces Thanks Maggie......an interview with Steve Dior before he dies would be amazing. He'd have untold stories about Sid altho', for you, it'd probably mean a trip to London etc etc! There's footage elsewhere on youtube of Sid live at Max's & Dior is playing like a man possessed, it sounds great & long story which I won't go in to, but those Sid solo albums really altered the course of my life!
@@TomTremayne SID SINGS!
@@nanchanger Yes nanchnager, my big sister bought me the LP, Christmas 1979. It was recorded, I think, at Max's.
@@TomTremayne the album with that title is one of the live at max's releases, love the cover photo and the music both...
One thing that should be remembered is that, until the late 80s, the drinking age in NYC was 18, and, basically, anything went.
I didn't know that. So interesting. Thanks for watching!
Does he still book bands? The guy is a legend , without him bands wouldn't have had a gig
No, he's about 84 now. Very sweet guy and such a legend. I loved hearing all of his stories. I'm not sure what he did after Max's closed in 1981. He told me he's always worked night jobs. He did mention he worked at a recording studio for awhile. I'm the same way, not an early riser at all.
The last couple of shows that Sid did at Max's, CHATTERBOX and TAKE A CHANCE ON ME, were AWESOME.
Yes, they were! I'll think I'll play Sid Lives today.:)
@@WhyNotGoPlaces 😁👍 Great choice. Disc 2 has the more polished shows. Thank you for sharing your adventures!
That Suicide band and that track are phenomenal. Ghost Rider deserves a total remix , maybe it's been done ? That track could be a total rave freak out dance track . Amazing
Hi Mike! Thanks for watching another one. Yes, that band was so ahead of their time.
Cool video Maggie/joe, yep think id go for the last velvet underground show, what a band.... with Sids last show a close second. Im afraid i never quite got into Alice, not my thing....
We're all in agreement! The last Velvets show, taped with a simple recorder on a table, is excellent. I play it often. Sometimes I wish I was born a little earlier. Thanks for watching again!
Nice video Maggie! I have that double live album of the Velvet Underground. Nice music! One of my favourite bands ever, together with The Doors, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Killing Joke, TC Matic and The Sex Pistols! The debut album of Suicide is on my wishlist! From Alan Vega I have the nice 7" Jukebox Babe. If I ever meet Sting, I will say him, sent a free record of you to Peter Crowley! greetings Jason
Thanks for watching Jason! You have very good taste in music. I like Suicide a lot too. So ahead of their time!
Thanks for your great posts. They are so genuine. I just learned that "Japan is a Dishpan" is actually a reference to a Captain Beefheart song of the same name, found on the record Lick My Decals Off Baby. Apparently Lydon was a fan of the Captain, which makes sense.
Thanks for the info! I remember Lydon saying he loved Captain Beefheart.
It would have been interesting to know if he met Sid, or saw any of the shows…nice interview 🎃
Yes I think so too. He seemed to know Nancy because he said she was very unprofessional to deal with, but he didn't say much about Sid. He didn't elaborate about the shows, so my guess was that he might not have attended. He booked the shows at Max's but he might not have gone to watch all of them . Thanks for watching!
@@WhyNotGoPlaces ha, pretty sure NO one expected to meet a "professional" Nancy...
@@WhyNotGoPlaces I’m Shari, the cover illustrator of Peter’s book. I was one of the upstairs waitresses at Max’s (where the bands played) during the time Sid played at Max’s. I also did flyer art and other artwork for the club. Peter and I have been friends since back in our Max’s days.
Yes, Peter was at the club during those Sid gigs in Sept 1978. He wasn’t the one who’d originally booked Sid because he was in England with Jayne County at the time. Deerfrance booked the first Sid gig and Peter booked the last three because by then he’d returned to NYC and was back at Max’s as music booker. Peter wasn’t a fan of those shows at all, that’s why he didn’t elaborate on them. Lol 😊
Thanks for your response. Why wasn’t he a fan of the shows? He mentioned Nancy… footage of one show has finally surfaced (The Final Curtain) Do you have any memories you can share? Thanks again!
Hi Shari, Thanks for watching! I love the cover art on his book. You did a great job. Regarding Sid, I figuredPeter was not a fan and was being diplomatic by not mentioning the live gigs. You must have many interesting stories yourself. Thanks again for watching.
John didn't like New York's drug of choice. He was more into speed
That's what I figured too. He didn't like heroin. Good choice.
@@WhyNotGoPlaces " I don't work
I just speed that's all i need" - Johnny Rotten.
Yes, I don't think heroin caught on in England. And I can see why. What a horrible drug.
CBs was cool, but max's was the best and hippest club ever in NYC...
I agree. What a history! I was so excited to interview Peter and talk about it. Thanks for watching!
