This hunt was on unit 36. But Tyler purchased a landowner’s permit and hunter on private property that was managed by an outfitter. For the record, we were not super thrilled with the experience. We found all of the elk, the outfitter pulled the bait and switch on us the morning of the hunt and sent us out with a “guide” that was 19 years old. Nothing against the kid, but he had no idea what he was doing. We spotted all of the elk that day, killed the bull, broke him down, packed him out - which is what we wanted to do anyway. I share this just so people can see that private land hunting and guides/outfitters are NOT always what we think or expect them to be.

@@BMCBryce there like the only units I hunt though because it’s where I grew up and where I know to go I do go down south sometimes I gotta good spot down there but I frickin went on a couple hunts with my friends in units more west I did fill a cow tag out west once but we were seeing elk off the road almost every day of the hunt. Crazy 🤪

For sure. Great idea. Man, I wish I was smart enough to have thought about that. Trying to make an enormous buck look even bigger in a picture in hopes of impressing people I don’t know or care about. What an incredible idea. Too bad I blew and only took regular pictures with the happy hunter, celebrating an amazing adventure and harvest - right on the buck while holding his antlers in his hands like normal people do. Really too bad.

For real. We were both shocked that he had fallen and pinned himself below that log the way he had. It was wild. Believe it or not, it was very challenging to get him up out of there - with just the two of us. He was such a big body and it was so steep, it just made it really hard to move him.

Well, you basically hit it on the head. You’re right… we definitely do not live anywhere near the elevation we were hunting. Lots of close missed shots - and all of them were high. I think the elevation coupled with the much much colder temps caused the misses. We have already taken steps to ensure that we practice at the same elevation and in similar (or as close to similar) temps as possible - before next year. Thanks for the kind words.

@@BMCBryce today was opening day of archery elk it’s my 11 year old sons 4th year bow hunting elk and he almost sealed the deal on a nice six posted a short on the channel he’s taken 2 bulls with a rifle and missed a couple bulls with his bow so far but I got a good feeling for this season!

The Book Cliffs can definitely be amazing (with the right conditions) but can also really fall off when things aren’t great (precipitation, vegetation, predation…). This year was a better year for sure. Take care.

The flies are always so bad early on. Some years are worse than others - but we figure it out. Tacos cooked on an open fire are next level… every time.

Some are on top, some are a bit harder to find.
