Principles to Building the Ultimate Hunting Rifle - An Updated Review of My Savage Axis
Переглядів 2037 місяців тому
*Important note* Do not buy a Leupold VX-Freedom scope for any active form hunting unless you install a CDS dial, which I believe enables zero-stop, or you create a way to lock the elevation dial. I just missed a whitetail because the dial spun on me while I’ve been walking with it slung. In this video I go over the principles of building the ultimate hunting rifle. At the end, I discuss how I'...

What’s Lighter? - MSR Reactor VS PocketRocket 2 Efficiency Test
Переглядів 1898 місяців тому
What stove style is actually lighter to carry in the backcountry, once its fuel weight is accounted for? An MSR Reactor or an MSR Pocket Rocket? In this video I run an efficiency test between the two to see which one is more efficient, and by how much. Then I do some algebra to calculate the day of a trip the more efficient stove begins to make sense to carry. I use my stove to rehydrate one me...

What Phone Do You Need For Backpack Hunting?
Переглядів 50Рік тому
In this video I touch on the requirements of a backpack hunter's cell phone. In my experience, a fancy phone is not needed. The biggest advantage given by newer iPhones is battery size, but in my experience that can be easily supplemented by a cheap auxiliary battery pack. If you have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comments!
Outdoor Research Foray Pants Review

When I first started backpack hunting I didn't have rain pants. Guess what, most of us start out that way. Then you spend enough time with a sogging wet ass from sitting in snow or hunting in the rain to decide $150 is worth it to not feel like you're on the brink of death. Enter the OR Foray Pants. They aren't made in the US and the only thing they have for amenities are side zips and a rear p...

Thanks man, for just the comparison I was looking for.
Me encanta ese rifle
Where did you get that tool kit? I need one. Thanks!
That is the Mity Master 1000 from Chapman Manufacturing - they have all different kinds. I love it
What type of sling swivel stud did you use on your AR rifle shown at the beginning of the video to attach the MOE to your Ar?
Painful to watch...

Only stock I run. I fuckin love it. Fat cheek weld, nice fit. no slop. Great stock in my opinion.
my 90 had no sway bars from factory.with 600 lb lawn tractor in bed it leaned horribly with 4 new kyb gasmatic shocks.found a "mid" mount 1 1/8th sway bar on 84 4wd at junkyard.new poly bushings & my severe leaning is gone.i like the mid mount bars that attach to radius arms more than the front mounts that snap outer connectors so easily.DEFINATELY worth the $ IF you can find mid 80s 4wd's to take from.
It’s supposed to fit tight, you don’t want wobble
My G2S came with 2 retainer pins (only 1 needed for the hammer pin). Also the 2 black trigger pins with the G2S have 3 grooves (1 on each side) so no easier orientation to install. There was no short steel slave pin to hold the trigger/disconnector assembly together while installing as with other Geissele models. The trigger performs well but this made the premium price feel like a waste.
Respect the mental health psa
How tight was the fitment? I just bought it yesterday and tried to put it on but couldn't even get it to start
It was pretty damn tight but I was able to get it on without much trouble
@bradlock55 thanks, I ended up having to taper the front corners a bit with a small file
How do you like it?
@theflypilot really great feel in the hands, I have more of a medium sized hands but it fits perfectly
I have an old pair of Mammut rain pants that i love. Full zip, pockets, crotch zipper. However, my belly outgrew them and Mammut doesn't seem to make them anymore. I am leaning toward the OR Forays. Curious what else you looked at and why you picked these over the other options.
I picked these cause they were a solid entry level rain pant. They’re cheaper than other options, have just enough features like cinches at the waist and ankle cuffs, and they’re lightweight. There are nicer pairs out there having crotch ventilation and more than just one pocket, but they weigh and cost more. I still have these and get by with them.
America surefire for life for me
Nice review mate. I literally bought one of these two days ago. I too, ‘cut grass’ and other things, for a living over here in Great Britain. A great watch and replaced my Casio MRW-200H, which the band on it gave up the ghost on Monday. All the best, mate.👍🏾🇬🇧😉
Thanks for the video, I also have a 1992 Ford Ranger that I just got, now I will also buy the Bilstein shock absorbers
I have yet to dump a mag accidental, hold up past the charging handle or front stabilizer, but then it takes your bottom rail. I do not like the fake suppressor and it gets warm.
Hold the hammer in place, uncocked. Wiggle it around to align the pin so that you don't need pliers to pull the pin.
AAC 55gr fmj has consistent issues to failure to eject spent casing. Do not buy as it does not cycle
You just fast fwd past the entire install
The reactor makes sense for winter backpacking/ climbing. Because you have to boil snow which takes way more fuel. And on a mountain or in very cold conditions you might not have any liquid water available. So you have to melt multiple litres a day. I assume that after like 3 days or something like that the reactor would be the lighter setup.
That’s a great point sir, thanks for bringing that up
Awesome watch. My most used watch, my most abused watch! I use it in the garden a lot and once I even lost it for some days in the compost bin. I found it after a couple of days.an evening when I was throwing something in the bin, I moved what was on top a bit, and the automatic light switched on, so I saw it was there. Awesome functions an impressive chair ability. It will resist. thanks for this video!
Im wearing this everyday
I use my dw5600bb for work and workout. I have field watch but g shock is made to get hit. Nice watch.
Thanks for the review man
It really is a great watch! Nice video.
Thank for your review! What flashlight are you using to have batteries that fit in the stock? I have a good light on my rifle, but the batteries are too big for the stock.
You’re welcome sir. I have a Surefire G2X mounted on mine, uses CR123A batteries.
Can't believe this is the first time I'm seeing this hack considering this is a widely talked about issue with the Vector.
vids keep getting better and better man!
Thanks brother 🙏 I appreciate it. Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving
I have one and have used it for 10 winters now to keep my neck and face warm. It is very versatile.
Before everyone knew what they were called I just called mine a face rag. Wore it when I was gunning with the m2 most the time.
That’s badass man, how’d your m2 run for you?
So it’s basically no different than any other cotton version from the sand box.
Been wearing shemags for years. SAS style is one of my favorite ways to wear them. Really multi purpose cloth
Bro cares about his beard more than anything
I live in Eastern Idaho, and I use mine as a modified neck warmer, or the old school "muffler." They work great.
Great video. This is why UA-cam exists, shared information.
I have several shemags. Love them.
You did a 10 min review on a shemagh…. Made by geissele…
Small content creator gets bullied by edgy tree name IG militia group.
@@BlyatdimirI think it's more stating absolute facts than bullying. He did in fact make a 10min video about a geiselle shemagh
Exactly what I was searching for.
I was wondering why i couldnt fit the front shocks on my 1990 ranger, i was trying to put in the new nut/washer/bushing on the bottom and the new bushing/old nut and washer on top and the threads wouldnt fit through, thanks for the video!!
I see how one could make that mistake. You're welcome brother happy if it helped.
Would anyone know where I can find the OD for the CRB, I'm going to thread in a Muzzle.
Just measured mine, OD is 0.598 inches according to my calipers
Great review! Thanks!
You’re welcome Manny
Did you use the pins that came with the trigger or the pins that were already being used in the frame? Are the pins that come with the trigger plastic? I heard they were but mine hasn't been delivered yet. Thanks for the video
I can’t remember which for sure, I think I used the new pins that came with the trigger. They were close to identical to the stock PSA ones and the pins that came with the trigger most certainly weren’t plastic
@@bradlock55 just installed this trigger on my new overpriced DDM4V7. Can't believe the difference. Thanks for the video.
@@Whitesp44 😂 They sure are sweet though. You’re welcome I’m glad to hear it’s a worthy upgrade 👌
@@bradlock55 inexpensive too. I didn't think it would be that good at that price point. Stay safe.
Geissele triggers are excellent triggers. You need to use the pins that came with geissele triggers because they alot better quality than the pins that came in your gun.
Somethin to note here guys, when installing the drivers’ side front shock, do your best to avoid moving the brake lines coming off the brake booster. I think I may have created a kink in my brake lines there resulting in some weird pedal feel, so I’ll need to replace those. Thanks for watching! Edit: I had a real mechanic working on the truck today and he diagnosed that it had a brake proportioning valve issue, which appears to be the cause of the odd pedal feel I experienced There wasn't a kink in the brake lines above the driver's side shock. Still best to be cautious.
I have been using a lot of different guns in the past 40years and I find that Graphite is a better lubricant for bots and firing pins - Oil just holds too much gunk and take more cleaning
Interesting do you have any products in particular you use or do you get straight graphite from somewhere?
I get fine grafite from a shop that sells lead and tools for lead lights repairs and polishing
@@michaelking7231 Okay, I’ll look into this. Thanks.
Loved the video man, you kind of covered it but I was going to ask if the Reactor has any other strong points over the Pocket Rocket. I know it goes a bit beyond this experiment, but does the Reactor perform better in windy conditions (more extreme than the fan in this video)? Also, would be interesting to run the test again with the Pocket Rocket at full blast to see if you can get the boil times to around the same, then see how much more efficient one is over the other (or maybe the Pocket Rocket is just incapable of getting water to boil as fast as the Reactor). Also curious your thoughts on how valuable the time efficiency is while you're out backpacking.
Thanks brotha. These are great questions, I appreciate it. 1) I can't think of any other advantages the Reactor has - just efficiency and power/low boil time. Durability seems to be on par, both have a good reputation there, though one of the heat exchanger fins on my Reactor did start to come off. 2) I haven't taken both stoves out at the same time, but the Reactor will perform better in windy conditions, no question about that. With the Reactor the flame can't get blown around whatsoever. I watched a documentary of some folks summiting K2 and they were using a Reactor. 3) That is a great point. Maybe I'll make a video testing the PocketRocket's efficiency at different flame heights. Would be interesting to do that test with and without wind too. May be tricky to control for fuel canister fill levels etc in that test but I'll consider this. 4) Time efficiency depends on the trip. If I'm backpacking with friends and just there for the experience, cook time doesn't even cross my mind. But on a multiday backpack hunt, life is non fuckin stop. Whether it's e-scouting, making hunt plans, setting camp, or talking shit, there's always something that needs to be done. On those trips there's no such thing as spare time and the last thing I wanna be doing is waiting on my stove to boil. Hope this helps.
I want to like these but they look like spider/mice/mosquito city to me.
They sure are. I used it this past weekend and had a banana slug in there with me at one point. I use this when it's very cold out and the bugs are away and I use a Black Diamond tent which has a floor to it in the warmer months. www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en_US/product/distance-tent-w-adapter/
I know this video is a bit old, but I'm not sure if I heard if the shell casings were inspected. It's possible that a pierced primer even not visible to the naked eye could shoot a hot jet of gas right into the firing pin channel freezing things up. Possible pressure interaction with the extractor as well.
That’s a great point sir. No I hadn’t thought of that at the time and didn’t inspect cases; it very well could have been that thanks for bringing it up
I bet the rifle has taken several whitetail. I had the same rifle in .243 got it at Walmart for under $ 250 with Savage rebate. Shot great. I’m sure the rifle has sentimental value since your dad got it for you. Your video shows if a person is the least bit practical, he can get all performance from a Savage Axis that is ever needed .
Great review, thanks
You’re welcome
I cursed for 30 minutes today working on the hammer pin. Still didn’t get it. Gave up
All because a gunsmith I paid to assemble my lower didn’t even use the hammer retaining pin. Had to get more from geissele
