Real Fighter Pilot Tries the DOF Reality H6: How Realistic Is It?
Former Real World F/A-18 pilot David "Pooch" Putze has over 1900 hours in Tactical Jet Aircraft and is currently a Commercial Pilot flying the Boeing 777 for FedEx. So what does a "real" pilot think of the experience in a DOF Reality H6? Does it feel real? Is it just a gimmick? Watch this video if you want to know what Pooch thinks.

    Good video. The yaw movement comes into play in more frequently than you may think. It adds a lot to many motion situations where, IRL, you're not actually yawing. As I'm sure you know, in VR, it's all about tricking your mind and your muscular skeletal system into believing what you're seeing in VR. Also, Yaw VR are actively working on an improved center stick mounting schema, and a focused helicopter platform. Unlimited yaw travel has always been possible with a wireless HMD, and with the latest Yaw3, the only cable going to the Yaw3 is the power cable. Everything else is wireless. A 4 point harness has been available since the early days of the Yaw2. The timing belt drive of the latest Yaw 3 is far less jarring than the cog wheel drive of previous designs.

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv 18 годин тому

      @@VRSimWizard Thank you for the comment and insight. I actually did try the Yaw 3 so that is my only Yaw experience. The question isn't if yaw is important... It is if 360 yaw is really needed, or is the limited yaw from say a DOF Reality rig enough? As for the wireless headset, the issue with that is all the high end VR Headsets that most simmers prefer are all wired, so Quest 3 is really your only option and that is not good enough for a lot of enthusiasts (I personally think the Quest 3 is the best value in VR currently, but I can understand why others want more for sure). Yaw will certainly have an audience, just not sure who it is best for yet.

      @GYGOtv День тому

      What do you mean I glossed over it? 14:50 That was one of the main points of the video is using the Binbok to extend the battery life... doesn't matter if you are sim racing or roomscale VR so I'm a bit confused what you wanted me to answer? Just to be clear, worst case in Mixed Reality you get over 3 hours with the headset and the battery so plan another 2 on top of that with the second battery... and in VR only (sim racing for example) you will get even longer. Hope that clears it up and thanks for watching.

    With the H6, do you miss the extra range of motion in the roll and pitch of the H3?

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv День тому

      Well I cheated with modifications so I'm actually getting the same range as the H3 (21 degrees total pitch). You can see the mods if you look at the Motion Platform Playlist on the channel. ua-cam.com/play/PLQLoIjq0cB4fhvYX5i9KSa1FoK1Z87Sn-.html&si=1j07rxM551sBoSul Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for watching.

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv День тому

      I was thinking about your question last night and realized I didn't really give you a good answer to the heart of what you were asking for an unmodified rig so let me give it another shot. Yes you will notice the lower range of motion from the H3 BUT what you gain in Surge and Sway and especially Heave more than makes up for it (ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE SIM RACING!). Those extra axis add so much to the driving experience that I wouldn't trade them for the world. Now in flight, I really like the surge for the carrier launch and trap, and with wake turbulence coming to MSFS2024, it will certainly add a lot there as well. The heave is critical for landings as you feel the aircraft touch the ground. So again you will notice the lower movement BUT the tradeoff is 100% worth it in my opinion. Hope that helps.

    GYGO, hi brother. Glad to see you thriving in the Gaming space. Just wanted to catch up, and pick your brains about the VR1. Like you, I have been holding out for the VR1, with the promised deep blacks and other things to be ironed out. Also like you, I have a MAJOR aversion to anything PIMAX. Having just returned the Crystal light, after x2 failed lense replacements, each set being worst than the other. Total nightmare. Shame, because the screens were smoking hot gorgeous. So, where are we at with the VR1? I know "Flight-sim-buy-things-guy" says it had some issues with the XR-runtime, and was rather sluggish on MSFS. Trouble is, in his latest and "final" review, he totally makes no mention of the fact, which leaves me wondering whether the runtime was fixed. I see a general lack of information regarding the VR1. For example, i would like to know which bases stations are optimal for the VR1, and its nowhere to be found. Just wondering if you can give me a full "sit-rep" on all things VR1. Also interested to know whether you yourself are going to pull the trigger. What you say there captain? Cheers GYGO.

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv День тому

      Great question, thank you for taking the time to write it. So I personally don't think the VR1 (or any non-OLED screen) will ever give me the black/blacks that I really want. If Artur sends me one to test once they sort that I'll for sure give you my honest opinion but I don't expect that to happen... Realistically I'm too small a channel. I just don't think the VR1 is anything really that more special than our other high end headsets and I am really suspicions of the dual lens design for glare (again I'd love to test it to find out for sure). My impression was it was just like the Varjo Aero visuals with a bigger FOV, which isn't a bad thing, but not sure worth that much money to me. I personally am not interested in the Mixed Reality for the price because if you mask your cockpit (even with a 100% replica) you are still not going to match the lighting effects of the sim in your room. Imagine flying at night in the game but looking down at your controls and they are all lit up with daylight... immersion breaker for me so I'll pass on that part. I've pretty much decided I'm not buying another VR Headset without OLED, so that means maybe the MaganeX or the Pimax Crystal Super OLED... and you know how I feel about Pimax. We will see and I can only hope that Deckard is closer than we think and that maybe it will be the headset I've been waiting for... of course I won't hold my breath on that, but one can dream right? Thanks again for the question.

      @@GYGOtv Thanks GYGO. Really interesting. I think im in the same boat as you, and will wait. I see Maganex are taking pre-orders (gulp) !! Again, think i'll just wait and see what transpires. They state no FOV either. I like how its a subsidiary of panasonic, perhaps great things are just around the corner. A waiting game.

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv День тому

      @@PaulMcDonagh-rv6vc I'm sure both the MaganeX and the Pimax OLED will be around 100 FOV is my guess. The big thing with the MaganeX is I'll have to use on ear headphones and I really prefer the off ear, which is a point for Pimax. Like you said, we will wait and see. Thanks for the reply.

    • @GYGOtv

      It is nice to be able to sneak a peek at the outside world once in awhile but I personally don't like the Mixed Reality setup where you can see your rig... I'm all about immersion and even if you have a replica of the cockpit you still aren't going to match the lighting conditions of the sim. Imagine flying at night but having all your cockpit lit by daylight... Immersion killer for sure. This is not a popular opinion and most other people love the idea of mixed reality... just not me. I will be getting the D-Mover 6DOF in a few months, they almost have it finished. How do you fix the effect of movement with the VR? So the motion of the rig doesn’t pull your vision thru your body? I seen a device you attach to the rig. Also heard a setting to disable on the VR.

    Just like phones you have plenty of options to choice from. Same with VR headsets now. Get what you like. There is No Wrong or Right! Although, I agree with what this man is saying. The pancake lenses are crystal clear providing a much better visual experience. The fresnel lenses are filled with integrated rings that make the visual experience messy. It will not ever look as good. 💯 Facts! My advice, get the Quest 3 not the Quest 3S better yet! Don’t get any and find another hobby! 😉👌

    Is there a center stick option?

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv 3 дні тому

      Yes you can mount a center stick.. the rig has mounting points all over it. It would just be hard to climb in and out for me on mine because I put a larger seat than most people have in theirs and I have that steering wheel mount in front. A lot of center stickers don't even use the front mount which makes it much easier to climb over the stick. I likely will do a Center Stick at some point... just trying to decide if I want Force Feedback too. Thanks for the question.

    The Quest 3S is better than the 2 as a standalone headset. With the better APU, you get better visuals, even with the old lenses. So I think that it's perfectly fine for the price point. But it's just not a very good headset for PCVR.

    When Pooch mentions his issue with the throttle, I believe that could be solved simply by adding detents to your throttle. I have them on my virpil throttle and have a very noticable pushthrough bump for going to afterburner. I also have to lift the finger detents to move the throttle back all the way to engine off.

    • @GYGOtv

      Thanks for the suggestion. Ya I know better throttles have the detents... my problem is I REALLY LIKE slider throttles vs. arching style throttles. I haven't seen a slider version yet with detents. Honestly not an issue for me, I use the motion of the platform to feel when I'm in burner, and then you can always look at the FF to verify as well. I totally get how this would mess a real pilot up though. Appreciate you watching.

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv 4 дні тому

      Great question! For racing the H6 Hands down is the way to go if you can afford it. In fact I'd pick an H6 over the Yaw 3 every time... The extra 3 axis on the H6 make a huge difference for almost everything, and honestly that 360 yaw feels more gimmicky to me and the H6 has enough yaw to get the feeling right as you saw in the video when Pooch was taxiing. The only BIG deal is that pitch back on the Yaw 3, you can't match that and it was a great feeling... but not great enough to overcome the other limitations compared to the H6 in my opinion. NOW the tricky question is when you start comparing the Yaw 3 to the H3. I feel like the H3 is FAR more stable, takes up less room, but since they are both 3DOF rigs, the Yaw obviously beats it on Pitch and 360 Spin (which again isn't that big a deal except maybe for helicopters or roller coasters). The other thing I worry about is the mounting options on the Yaw. They have that plate that comes up between your legs and that limits center stick stuff... you could remove it but then you got to come up with a solution if you want a steering wheel or other things in your cockpit, just doesn't seem like great mounting options yet for the Yaw, but that can come in time. I also worry a little about the durability because I know they Yaw 2 had some issues in that department. I have to also mention the Yaw3 had some delivery issues in the past as well, I guess the bottom line is the Yaw3 is more expensive but if you are willing to pay the extra, the Yaw3 will give you a bit more motion over the H3. I just don't know if that extra cost is worth what you get and I do think the H3 is the best value out of the 2. I hope that answers your question?

There is a reason that you don’t find this long throw / short stick setup irl. That’s also the reason the dcs tankers are essentially 20mm targets for 80% of the community. • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv 4 дні тому

      Yes for sure, but let me try to help here so you don't have to wait. I've taken a ride in the front seat of the Apache a few times now (I've tried to fly it but it always ends up in the dirt so skill is lacking for sure on my part). I can tell you that Heave is a huge thing in a helicopter so personally I wouldn't even consider the Yaw until they have a heave module (that they have talked about in the past). The heave makes the ground solid when you land and it is impressive, plus it also gives you that swoopy feeling as you move up and down which is also great in a chopper. The other axis that is fun is the sway side to side which you won't have in the Yaw. Honestly, I think if you were debating an H3 vs. the Yaw3 then it might be worth waiting to see BUT an H6 vs. the Yaw, I think the H6 offers a lot more... just keep in mind you are losing that 360 spin... but honestly there is enough yaw in the H6 that you get a similar effect. Hope that helps and please let me know if you have any other questions about this that I might be able to help with... I know it is a big purchase! Remember we also have the discount code which should help too.

      I own the H3 and primarily fly helicopters and absolutely love it. While it doesn't have actual heave up and down and left and right, it decently mimics it with roll and pitch (i.e. when I lift straight off the ground the rig momentarily tips back quickly, making you feel the lift off). I will most likely end up upgrading to the H6 in the future, but am already extremely happy.

I use controller based tracking with the controller mounted behind my head and it works 99% of the time. It really is the best option right now for 6DOF rigs. If you are running OpenXR you can have the software start automatically so you don't have to mess with setup every time... unfortunately you still do have to manually start it each time in OpenVR (SteamVR) but it is just a simple checkbox in the app once you have it set up so no really big deal. LOL, ya I wish he would have mentioned it to me when it was happening... Actually what happened was BOTH OpenXRMC AND OpenVRMC were working at the same time (which I had no idea it would stack like that! I thought it would only work on whatever the Headset was using). SO one was working correctly and then the other one was compensating again on top of it. If you notice the MC is actually backward where the cat shot slides his view forward instead of back. If you listen closely after he gets shot down, you can hear "Tracker Motion Lost" 7:21 which is the OpenXRMC turning off. From that point forward everything was fine as you can see from the carrier landing etc. He did mention it to me after that first sortie but then when I checked with him again he noticed it wasn't doing it anymore so for sure that was it.
