Flea announced (December 15th 2019) that Josh Klinghoffer and the band were “parting ways”. Then immediately announces John Frusciante’s return in the same post. Do you ever accidentally turn off the pedal by pressing the pedal too hard ?
Rarely but it did happen some. When you get the feel for it after a day or so, you’ll know how hard/soft to press. The standard wh10v3 (without the mod) was almost impossible to turn on and off while sitting down. Even times when I was standing, it was hard to engage. The Wilson mod makes it so much easier. I actually sold all my gear for a helix, but I’m looking at buying another one from Kevin Wilson, because they’re literally perfect in my opinion.

You have to try the "voltage"amp" its based on plexi
I will do so this evening and let you know!
Are you talking about the “line 6 voltage” or “voltage queen”. At first I tried voltage queen but didn’t like it. BUT THEN I tried the line 6 voltage and oh my… I think it may be my favorite. Seems like the gain stage and channel volume work so well together in shaping tone. I actually got Frusciante tone really quick. Like weirdly quick. Now I just need to “A & B” them to see which one is closer. But yea, thank you for leading me that direction. Will definitely do a video on it as well as a shoutout!

I’ve tried this very same thing before… IMO . . . No it does not come anywhere close enough to replace the DS2.. for me it’s not just the tone but the feel is missing. This goes for all digital modelling overdrive, distortion and fuzz! When it comes to these kind of pedals I’ve yet to find a digital one that I go oh yea it feels like a pedal or the pedal it’s replicating. I’ve tied most modellers bar axe fx. I have tried to capture the DS2 and other drives on the Quad cortex too and no it just doesn’t feel like the pedal , most of the tone is there but it’s missing life. Haven’t tried the tone x stuff so will try that at some point. My solution for my tastes is to just use multi fx pedals for everything but the drives , fuzzes and boosts for now, the helix fx are pretty good to be honest, I like em.
I agree. I sold my ds2 and all my pedals to afford a helix. While I’m really happy about the effects, tweakability, signal path diversity, and silent playing with headphones (to not disturb wife or neighbors), it does still fall short with the fuzz kind of drives. The overdrives sound really close but only get you so far, without completely understanding frequencies and how to make it sound as close as possible. That’s why I love and miss my pedals- you just turn them on, set it, and forget it.
@@frusciantegeartone ahh man I get that … it sucks to get rid of the pedals, I had to do my own cull earlier this year .. I also know about the silent playing. 4 kids. Man I don’t know how much a full helix set you back out there, but since your Frusciante focused, I’d consider adding the JFX empyrean and a DS2 ( get em used if your on a budget, although I always would try to support justin direct if ya can, super cool guy) to your board if you can stretch for one… it would complement the helix well. Everything else in the helix will have you mostly covered I think , maybe wh10 is another essential I can’t remember if you can pseudo this with helix fx.
Tbf I think it sounds pretty close, however more digital of course. I think the buffer and tone of the DS-2 is way too unique perfect bass distorted growl and nasal. Nice video btw
I think you’re right. You can only get so far with digital. I think if I understood the frequencies of the ds-2 better, I could better tweak the eq on the helix. That’s what’s great about actual pedals- you just turn a couple of knobs and you’re set 😂.
Hola muy bien!! Puedes compartir el preset? 🙏🏼

Not a Helix guy (yet!) but i find this really interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching. I was a skeptic but now I’m all in.
Man, i think the helix looks cool, the UI is great, the effects are okay, but man. The amps are incredibly awful imo (yes, even with third party IRs and the 3.5 cabs). Kemper, fractal, or QC for me.
Yea I watched Andersons comparing the helix with others and actually liked the kemper. The kicker for me was that the helix had the exact pedals I needed. (Obi wah, spin cycle, and a few others). I love that I can play through headphones while also running into stereo amps or front of house while having a volume knob for my headphones only (which would def be needed for me). Can’t imaging doing sound check, dialing in, but then when we play live the drummer kicks it up a notch and then I can’t hear myself. All I’d have to do is turn the mix on my headphones really quick on the helix while not affecting the house mix volume. Not sure if the others have that capability but helix wins the versatility trophy for me, while kemper wins the tone. I think dialing in side by side, I could get a helix to sound like a kemper. Maybe.. 😂 What type of system are you running?
@@frusciantegeartone Gotcha! I'm still running a pedalboard. I've got a princeton reverb, handwired ac30, and pro junior that I use on all my session work and any venues that allow amps on stage still. For playing churches, casinos, or any other silent stage venues, I've been using the kemper toaster for my amp+cab with my pedalboard (wet effects in the fx loop of the kemper). Just grabbed the kemper player, so that will defintely be nice not having to carry the toaster as well. I've found that kemper+pedals gets me closest to the tones I get running my board into my amps.
@@spillemusicstudios8515 wow! That’s a nice setup. I noticed that the helix dropped price by a couple hundred dollars. Makes me think a new helix is on the way but we’ll see. I’m definitely late to the game of digital modeling. So far I’m very impressed. Option paralysis is real 😂
Sounds great!!
Thank you! 🙏 Always a work in progress
Loving the tone of the Brit Plexi on its own. Just done a low cut to 80 Hz on cab to control the rumble. Looking forward to the next vids.
Yes it’s a nice tone for sure. I just tried the Brit Plexi Jump and it sounds amazing too.
I have no idea how that'd sound in reality but on paper you could have gone with brit plexi jump as John jumps the channels of his Marshall Major and for the cabs there actually is the exact model that John uses included in the Helix which is 4x12 1960A T75(although John has been using B cabinets exclusively from Stadium Arcadium onwards, but it isn't that important). Nonetheless, I have to say that you've achieved quite a tone.
Awesome! Thank you so much! Guess I’ll do an updated video thanks to you!! 🎸
@@frusciantegeartone Yeah I mean I think you should just experiment with those Marshall Major substitutes and choose the one you like the most. If it was the plexi bright then feel free to stick with that one

@@frusciantegeartone I'll of course!😂
The deciding factor for effects, amongst those that consider themselves....'discerning' enough to notice the difference, is tone. HOWEVER...tone, in so much as it aims at 'some version' of a 'generically' understood or described sound, is either 1.) subjective, or 2.) qualitatively meritocratic. IT CAN'T BE BOTH. If its subjective, just accept the sound you can have for the least amount of money! NOBODY ELSE LISTENING WILL CARE! If they do, they are not musicians or music lovers, they are gearheads and wannabees, who only think they are capable of objective A/B comparisons, when blind tests repeatedly prove them wrong. These kinds of 'fans' or fanatics, are not capable of appreciating what music is or what musicians do. They only crush on their chosen idol whose sound, if it were 'otherwise', would 'then' be ideal too. No component of 'any' musicians greatness is comprised by tone, which is why there is so much greatness with so much variety! The hallmark of 'every' musicians 'state of play' is the way they connect, approach and leave the note. I can tell the difference between two great violinist playing a given piece of music when heard in the background over a bad phone connection...EVEN IF I'VE NEVER HEARD A GIVEN PERFORMANCE'S EXCENTRICITIES BEFORE! Stop trying to 'buy' sonic proficiency, and start practicing to develop 'musical' proficiency, then someone might crush on you enough to win you fans FOR THE 'UNIQUE' WAY THAT YOU PLAY; even though they too will do you the disservice of thinking that what is unique about you is some particularity of tone. Brian May intentionally manufactured a sound that is 'odd'. Guitarists thought it 'odd' and laughed at it when they first heard it. What ever happened to that guy, LOL! Be bold, be different, and not in the subtle way you think will win you appreciation. The M13 has everything you need to get you all the way to 'oddness' and beyond!
Very well said 💯. Even chasing a tone that you want can place you in a box too. Sometimes I surprise myself playing on a weird distortion setting I wouldn’t normally play with and come up with something totally organic and unrecognizable. Thank you for your thoughtful comment. 🙏
Ye.
The tone, and the polished, smoothness are all on John F.
Mister Turbodistortion is back🤔The sound is pretty dope😮

Hey! Is the plastic good? My pickguard is broken and kaish is one of the fews brands with my model available (yamaha pacifica 112j)
Yea I have no complaints about the plastic.
@@frusciantegeartone thanks!
Man after watching your video I am 💯 convinced these all in one stage boards are a double edged sword if something goes wrong with a switch or pedal you're pretty much SOL unless you got some extra insurance. Thanks for the vid 👍🏼
You are correct. They can be great and absolutely horrid 😂. Just depends on what you play live. All in one pedals are great for studio and live situations. But a small pedalboard with the essentials is failproof (usually) playing live.
a single impeccable John Frusciante....
John wrote it so John wins by default
I like your logic. 😂 But there are people that do better than original artists. For example Joe Crocker’s version of the Beetle’s song “with a little help from my friends” is usually thought of to be so much better than the original track. I like John better but it’s interesting hearing people’s thoughts.
@@frusciantegeartone John is the king of melody and writing memorable solos. Forever my goat. Josh was solid though.
Looking forward to seeing more material with the helix!
Currently working on material! So much to dive into, I may have to start with basic tone and work up to patches and effects.

No Dyna Comp?!? 😯
Not really needed if playing through dirty channel of amp, which I’m playing through in this video. Now if I was playing a BSSM set, I’d def use a compressor. But not really needed in my opinion. Have you watched any Dave Simpson videos? He goes in depth about fruaciante’s tone and compression. He also doesn’t use a comp either. I did have a yellow compressor by mooer on my board for a while as an “always on” pedal but didn’t seem worth the real estate so I sold it. I’m now playing through a helix. May do a video on compression A/B to see the difference on dirty amps vs clean amps with compression
John is the real guitarist of the chili peppers, i think there's nothing to add... 🤘🎸💖

Guess I've been extremely lucky I've had my helix for many years have not experienced that type of problems with it has been a great unit for me. I definitely would not deal with the squeak issue. And I hope you didn't pay $2,000 for that unit because they have been on sale lately for way cheaper than that. Hate you have had a bad experience with the product.
Thank you for that. I actually sent it back and ordered another unit. So far, it’s amazing! I can’t complain besides the switches being so close together but I’m sure I’ll get used to that!
Sounds great!
Thank you 🙏
I use a Morley wah power boost then after I put an TS9, I'll buy a ds-2 this week. I think I'll put it before the wah to get the 'frusciante's' tone wdyt?
…that helps!
So good to hear!
cool, glad it worked out for ya
Me too! Fingers crossed 🤞
My Helix started squeaking like that yesterday. If yours is under warranty, then send it back for a lube. so you don't void warranty. Mine isn't, so i had to pull it apart for a lube. Wasn't too difficult. Pulled up a disassembly vid and made it happen. got it back together with no problems thankfully, and no more squeaking! gl with yours.
Also maybe the reason your pedal wont go to zero is that bolt might be to tight. GL
I actually sent it back and got another one. It works perfectly! So happy. I’m just learning to use it now which is pretty easy but I know it can go really in depth of tweakability but I’m keeping it simple.

I’ll have to take a look at mine - albeit the LT version - but I was sure I could set the expression pedal effect so that you could have a custom range ie. Set zero earlier then fully back for instance and fully on to like 60% or whatever value you wanted. I gig with mine and not gonna lie, have had the expression pedal become non functional too lol. I always carry a spare wah that I run out of the fx loop for those just in case moments. Otherwise love what I get from mine tonally while playing in my RHCP cover band and in my AC/DC GnR band - which I only use the expression pedal for a vocal effect on GnRs version of Hair of the Dog :-) - so if it fails there, it’s not huge. But the chilis stuff - gets used a lot more.
Yea I actually sent it back and just today got another one in the mail. I spent the afternoon building a “by the way” era preset. The wah pedal works this time. O squeak and the pedal actually goes back to 0% instead of farting around at different inconsistencies like the previous one. One thing I changed this time is expression 1 on the helix is wah and expression 2 is wah. This may have helped with the issue I was having but it wouldn’t have helped doing pitch shifting. But yea I’d love to hear or see your RHCP setup. Are you running dual amps? I keep having the dsp issue running two amps (hard panned L&R) and not being able to have effects after dual amps.
How is the noise gate and tuner on the m13? Is the tuner chromatic?
From what I remember it was chromatic. Noise gate works well. I don’t have the m13 anymore but I loved it. The tap tempo/tuner foot switch gave out on me but easily fixed by decompressing the spring that activated the switch. Basically stretched the spring because it had been pressed so many times that it stayed compressed.
@@frusciantegeartone thank you!
So I did end up buying a Helix Floor unit! Here’s my thoughts in this updated video. ua-cam.com/video/RLC1yMMRJQ8/v-deo.htmlsi=XMaBvNUfhZVTtoQ4
Im a bassist so i dont really use much beyond a tuner and an occasional fuzz here and there, but man, i would never entrust one of these things over a tried and true basic rig. Pedals and amps have worked great for over half a century, no need to reinvent the wheel 😂
Never thought of it that way, but you are correct. Pedals are simple, yet complicated in certain setups, but have worked so well for so long. We haven’t had digital modeling as long so it’ll be interesting in the future to see if people stick with one or the other. I actually had a dream last night that I bought another Helix and had the same issue 😂 ☠️. As far as amps go, I know people are talking about shortage of tubes but I have a “trans tube” peavey amp, and the tube switch on the amp really does create that tube sound. Heck, even a small, cheap compressor pedal can sound like a tube amp. Digital world sounds great but I can feel the difference, either in latency or incorrect settings. Either way, it’s complicated and/or not as good. Plain and simple
