    This video is soo great. People obsess over tone & gear so much that they forget to enjoy the music itself. I went down the same rabbit hole & learned a lot from it. Videos like this helps us as a reminder that playing music should be fun.

    Was a huge pedalboard, tube amp guy for 30 years but got the Helix LT 2 years ago and couldn’t be happier with it. It takes time to dial in the tones you want but it is so powerful, you can find anything you want with it. I was also done with cables, power supplies…
    It’s all personal preference - whatever works for you! It sounds like you did your homework so feel good about pedals, they’re great too. There’s no right answer…just opinions with gear.

    Being a hobbyist musician is expensive, no denying about it. So obsessing, reading reviews (especially negative ones) and even trying to test a piece of gear is actually crucial to avoid making a costly mistake. Personally, a helix user and longtime modelling user, I considered the opposite journey mostly because one flaw I always found in me with all in one digital modellers is that I can't find a quick way to edit parameters on the fly during writing sessions. In a live situation where I have everything set in stone I would never get myself out of my preset template that allows me to focus on performing rather than tapdancing on a board and hoping for no faulty cables. But in a rehearsal just having to bend down and move the knob on the right pedal is faster than scrolling through menus and remembering to save just in case. So I thought about it for a year before settling in a solution and it became wildly different than my initial plan, and it still might change since I've tested it just two times. So yeah, I think obsessing is good. As for your choice to avoid the Helix, if it isn't for you it's just fine. These are just tools and we need to feel comfortable using them, if something is always in the back of your mind that doesn't allow you that comfort then its better to move on. As for the failures I personally have a weird history with Line6 products, everything I bought new never faild me and I still have some really old stuff that still works like a charm; bought the one unit I bought used (a POD X3 Live) had 4 switches that died on me in a matter of months. So I don't know if I'm just lucky or if it's all down to how one takes care of his equipment

      That’s a great take. I’m actually in the process of selling my pedals on reverb. I’m buying a helix! The fact that they have the “legacy” effects now is a game changer. They didn’t have some of the fm4 series but now that they do, I’m in! The obi wah, spin cycle, etc. I need those for my Frusciante stuff.
      I’m not big on using a computer for updating stuff but it’s not that big a deal. Especially that being the one piece of gear that does it all, I may end up loving the computer tweaking and such.
      I’ll keep you updated and thank you for sharing! ✌️ 😎

    Just one more thing - what you plug into from the Helix is really important too. I bought a Headrush FRFR which sounds kind of "plasticy" but through my studio monitors, it sounds amazing. I also go directly into the power amp section of my tube amp which works great too. I am poking around for a different FRFR, and have read some good reviews on the Friedman ASC..pricey but not as much as the Mission FRFR. Anyone have other monitor/speaker options that work well with the Helix?

    • @frusciantegeartone
      @frusciantegeartone  6 місяців тому

      Definitely! I have watched many videos on what you plug into from the helix.
      And like you said, if using an amp, going through the power section instead of the main input. So as far as I understand, that means into the fx loop. What I’m confused about is, does that bypass the amps eq? I would hope so, that way you get a more precise sound of you ever plug into another source (pa, frfr, etc). I would like to play into a small bass practice amp that’s easy to carry around and also have the option of using that little amp as my stage monitor but also go direct into house pa and sound pretty similar between the two sources.
      I don’t think a frfr is something I want because I do like the sound of an amp, even a small and somewhat cheap one.
      I feel the helix can make even a small amp sound BIG with all of its options of amp and cab sims.
      Also the best thing for me is the fact I can move the helix anywhere in my house and I could film stuff for UA-cam and the fact that all the extra cables and power wires aren’t all cluttered.
      I do feel I’ll be able to make my helix sound like my pedals. Just hoping to minimize the latency.

    I also obsess about gear. I am currently drooling over Pink Taco V2. Having said that: I bought a used Helix LT for 800 bucks 4 years ago. I have never had a single issue with it. As far as the "feel" thing is concerned, I have never really had this issue either. I actually find the Helix to be an inspiration machine as it is so easy to experiment with different amp/effects combos. The true benefit of something like the Helix is that you can easily set up a variety of sounds to be great at any volume. The ability to easily create snapshots to run a set with is also huge. My only gripes with the Helix are the tuner (its a bit slow) and some of the drive sounds when using them into a real amp. If i were to use the Helix as a pedalboard to go into a real amp, then i would insert my favorite drive into one of the loops. The helix drives into the Helix amps sound great, though. If you are a single sound guy and never want to experiment, I'd say stick with analog.

    • @frusciantegeartone
      @frusciantegeartone  Рік тому

      That’s awesome that you haven’t had any issues. I could handle a slow tuner. I would definitely want to try one before I bought one.
      The drives on the m13 are pretty much the same. I did have issues with the drives hard clipping and had a hard time balancing out soft/hard clipping. My drummer was always telling me that in his headphones my sing Al was clipping and couldn’t resolve unless I turned the gain way down, which was hardly any gain at all.
      I’m about to check out the pink taco v2! How would you use it? I’m intrigued

      @Frusciante Gear Tone Thanks for the response! How would I use the Pink Taco? As often and as loudly as possible! Hehe. It is kind of a one trick pony, but it does the trick very well from what I can tell from videos. I suppose I'd use it as a straight-ahead rock machine. I'm curious to see how it handles a baritone. I'd use an eq pedal in front with the level dropped to sculpt a clean-ish tone, then turn it off for the business. That's all speculation, of course, as I don't have the opportunity to try before I buy. No Freidman dealers in my area.

    Hello, I’m the same, always thinking about the new gear. I’m old school and recently started thinking about the past gear. You know quite a few Nashville studio guitarists use the M9 and love it. I’m thinking of this M13 used to run with my 5150 Peavey Combo, I have a few pedals but when you add the $$ of chorus, delay, reverb etc it makes more sense in my opinion. I’m a home player and I think it’s a great option. Love the channel

    • @frusciantegeartone

      I’ve heard mason from vertex effects say that about the m9, being used in studios still.
      At one point I thought of using 2 m13’s for even more fun.
      Glad I didn’t. The octave down effect has started being weird now too. Could just be a bad cable, but I’m getting a hum with the octave trying to emulate the hum frequencies 😂.
      In the back of my head, I know I could get a good sound out of a helix, but I can’t risk any future problems with the unit, being so expensive.
      I am going to make a video soon on the flanger and how it can emulate chorus, vibrato, vibe, rotary, and classic flanger sounds.
      That way you don’t necessarily have to buy many pedals. Im looking at Joyo brand.

    Whatever works for you. My guitar teacher used to be an analog guy because he was afraid of losing everything during a gig. However, I think all those cables in a chain create more problems.
    I have a Helix and I do spend lots of time tweeking presets, which I know some people hate, but I find it really inspiring and I feel like I'm getting better because I'm so much more in control of my sound. I'm never stuck with a sound I don't like. I can always fix it using my ears. Also, my songwriting is closely linked to the tools I have and the Helix gives my a huge range of colours.
    Anyway, everyone is different.

    • @frusciantegeartone
      @frusciantegeartone  Рік тому +1

      Exactly! Patch cables and their reliability was a huge factor for looking into the helix for me.
      I agree about the options the helix has. Almost unlimited. It has most of all the effects you could ever need. The option of running two amps and cabs at once, with different mic placements is unbelievable! The headphone out option is also great.The volume/wah/expression pedal built in to the unit is the icing on the cake.
      My only issue with some of the effects is that they sound digital and just bad (subjective of course).
      But after watching the video (in the description) about a guy who used it for 3 years and the problems he had with it, was what has stopped me from getting one. Tap tempo switch (also tuning switch) going out is too much of a potential issue for me to consider it.
      My line 6 m-13 had the same problem. I use the tap tempo function in live settings so much that I know I’d wear it out.
      The only option I’d have would be to set the tempo of the effect to the expression pedal, which would work, just not as easy as tapping.
      I still haven’t completely decided against it, but I have been stacking my cart with pedals in Amazon to see what I’d spend on actual pedals. So far 8 pedals for $500. Not including cables..
      Do you have the helix floor or LT?
      I’d be interested in hearing your cons/pros. It may just change my mind! 😂

    • @MonkeyLaughing101
      @MonkeyLaughing101 Рік тому

      @@frusciantegeartone I have the Helix LT and I kept a backup HD500, which I can deploy really quickly. I also use a real amp as a monitor and feed the processed signal to front of house, I add the extra Mission expression pedal so I can split my wah and volume. Although I've never needed all the extra stuff I keep in the car, I'm superstitious that one day when I don't bring it, that's when I'll need it.
      Anyway, I've never had any major issues, whereas my guitar teacher was describing issues all the time. Here's why I think mine's better:
      - No patch cables and less pieces in the chain that can break means fewer issues
      - No microphone placement on the amp; huge improvement to live sound
      - Easy to fix if there's ever an issue because I just replace the whole unit. I'm not on hands and knees trying to work out what's broken
      As I said, everyone is different. I'm naturally technical so the effects processor fits the way my brain works. Also, the thing I notice is whatever is last in the signal chain has the biggest impact on tone. Bad cab versus good cab affects tone much more than a bad pedal. I'd be surprised if you can hear the difference between pedals on anything but the cleanest amps. Billy Corgan is a huge tone snob and has about eight different preamps in his live rig. He switched to HX Effects because he couldn't hear the difference between his real pedals and the ones in HX Effects.
      Anyway, I've learnt not to follow the opinions of others. You have to try it out for yourself. Good luck. Love the vids. Frusciante is a crazy god.

      I’m like you in the fact that I’m very technical. I love tweaking and dialing stuff in (sometimes more than playing) but once it’s perfect, it’s all set for good.
      Billy Corgan was one of the first reasons I looked into the helix, and if something like the helix is good enough for him, I’d think it would be me too. He said he can get the actual tones from certain eras when they used different amps an effects. Brilliant.
      Here’s a question for you. If I had the floor or Lt, and was running through the house but wanted a monitor on stage with me, what are my options for a small to medium size monitor? I have no clue other than frfr but those are like 400 at least I think. I wonder if I could just use a small monitor of some sort…
      I would definitely be running amp cab sims so I wouldn’t need my real amp.

      @@frusciantegeartone All good, I don't mind the questions. The answer is, you can do whatever you want but there'll be tradeoffs.
      -- FRFR is the simplest and you can still trigger feedback with FRFR. This solution is also best using IEM.
      -- If you use an amp, like I do, you'll have to put your effects in the front of the chain, and then split the signal:
      1. Front of house with amp sim, cab sim and reverb
      2. On stage amp
      All that means your delay and modulation goes before the amp, which I don't mind.
      There maybe a way to move modulation into the effects loop using the four cable method, but to me, it's too complicated and I want things that are simple and reliable.
      TBH, if I had two Helixes, I'd probably just ditch the amp. I'm only keeping it because it works with the HD500 and I just like the amp. I may ditch it someday.

    Been using the helix since 2016 as a church worship player. Used to travel with a vox ac30 and pedal board. Sold that stuff and got a helix. Loved it ever since. My tap tempo has had very few issues, mostly firmware related problems that have been resolved…and that’s on my unit that I've had since 2016. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. HOWEVER! The experience is enhanced significantly if you also invest in a decent set of high-quality monitors or speakers (preferably EQ flat speakers) so that you can emulate that "loudness" that you're used to in a real amp situation. I have had a set of KRK Rokit 6 monitors since the beginning of my helix journey and they have really helped me understand the appeal at the start. Without a decent set of speakers, a lot of folks try to get that "real amp tone" with a set of headphones....and that just isn’t going to do it. SO… if you buy a helix, make sure you have a decent set of monitors or speakers to accompany you in your journey. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

      @@frusciantegeartone You could for sure use the Peavey FX loop. This will work in concept. However, you might find that the speaker in the Peavey unit and/or the amplifier in the Peavey unit (even if its bypassing gain stages) might influence the frequency capacity of the Helix sound. All electric guitar amps are built to accommodate the mid-range mix of frequencies that make up what we know as “electric guitar tones” and they all do it a bit differently frequency. So, if you use the Helix with your Peavey you will only get the range of mid tone frequencies that the Peavey is capable of. This isn’t bad, but its limiting, which could be a little rough if you are looking to hear all that the Helix has to offer, as it has dozens of amps and cabs that are built to emulate frequencies that are beyond what your Peavey can do. This is why a I mentioned Flat EQ monitors or in other words, studio monitors. These monitors have a wider range of frequency potential that will allow you to hear the full range of tones that the Helix can portray. I personally have tried mixing the helix with a couple guitar amps and comparing to studio monitors (which are mostly flat eq) and it’s a pretty big difference, especially if you have two studio monitors to hear the helix in stereo.
      All in all, keep this in mind, Yes the Helix can work in the context of using it with your Peavey, so long as it has a working fx loop. Just know that studio monitors will give you a better experience

I don’t care about scribble strips or all the fx loops, but the more sturdy expression pedal on the floor model seems like it would last longer.
      I’m still torn I think though. What would you suggest, LT or floor?

More than all the other units except boss... Boss only company making these so solid. Now I will say the scribble strips are actually part of the magic. They are next level pretty. Can see plain as day . In stomp mode they work wonderfully. The pedal on floor is also much more sturdy. For the money I think Helix floor is the ticket. And the recent updates have taken it up a new level again. Line 6 is constantly giving us usable updates that actually gives soo much extra every time. This is why line 6 dominates all the competition, company actually has true loyalty to it's customers . The Helix is great. Let me say I've had my 2 years +. After the 3.5 & 3.6 updates it sounds better than ever. And there is a big learning curve. How to tweak it to make it sound really killer took me a lot of time to get good at.
    I am like you, I obsess over gear, tone, sound, etc. Should I get this or that? I don't regret losing the pedal board, midi switcher crazy complex setup and changing to the Helix. It sounds awesome on stage. I have 100 amps in a box and don't have to store them in my house. I never have to re-wire my board because I got a new pedal or I want to change the position of one of them in the chain.

    to be honest, I'm on many styles of music etc so I went on digital first but ... I quickly changed my minde because it was too limited for me.
    I prefer a good and small pedal board for 3 styles, one for my Frusciante, one for my numetal 5 (Wes Borland / stephen carpenter) , and another really small one for my metalcore which is only a decimator with a maxon OD 808
    I have real pedals for each board, but ! the common between those pedal board are my future line 6 M13 and the tuner and that's it.
    Full digital is crap because first of all it a pain in the as to set everything for each styles and presets, you spend the entire time to make pressets setings and tweaking ... instead of playing.
    Secondly if it needs to be repaired you have nothing to replace it ... I sent back my digital stuffs and I'm really glad today
    Thanks for this video !
    of course I'm a pedal geek and sneaking for new pedals but a real pedalboard makes you hapier cause you can make it evolve to something that suits more for you and it follows you forever

    Dude your analogue gear probably has 10x more latency than helix. helix is only 2ms for all it's sims and effects, imagine that one stomp box can produce that amount, especially delays or reverbs. Also, if you understand what plays a role in analogue gear to that feel you are talking about, than you can make helix ''feel'' even more natural than a tube amp. Its all about compression from tubes... use compressors wisely and you will be more than happy. Most negative videos on youtube regarding amp sims or Helix comes from lack of knowledge.

    • @frusciantegeartone
      @frusciantegeartone  Рік тому +1

      I think you have analog and digital processing confused. It’s actually backwards. Analog pedals process audio almost immediately while digital pedals have more latency due to the processing and converting. Google it if you don’t believe me.
      I do think it’s possible to make a helix feel more real like you said. But some of us have higher sensitivity to latency. It’s actually a good thing if it doesn’t bother you. But for those of us that can detect it, it’s a no go.
      I understand completely how it works, just doesn’t work for me.
      Also for example, even my digital fm4 pedal sounds better than the fm4 effects within the helix/m13 series. Both are digital, but the processing in such a big digital unit like an m13 or helix is affected negatively. It sounds less real.
      It does have benefits like multiple different effects at once but I think it’s a sacrifice in good tone (subjectively of course).
      Thanks for watching and for your feedback! Keep playin!

I was speaking with a church band leader who said, if not for the band, many wouldn't attend services. Considering my total investment of time is equal and far exceeds that of some folks with paid positions for doing the same job as the band, I think being paid is in order. If the band is in fact bringing in financial contributions, same as the pastor, and the pastor is getting paid for his expertise, so shall the band, in my worldview. The churches with the biggest bands bring in the most revenue. Some of these mega churches must be considered businesses, by any reasonable person. I see it that way.
