Flea Announced Josh Klinghoffer’s out & John Frusciante’s back! Harsh or Expected? You Be The Judge

- Flea announced (December 15th 2019) that Josh Klinghoffer and the band were “parting ways”.
Then immediately announces John Frusciante’s return in the same post.
Was it a harsh way of letting Josh go or expected as a “fill in“ (which lasted 10 years)?
That’s a long time to “fill in” in my opinion.

The entire time Josh was in the band, I wanted John back. The 3 veterans worked their assess off for, “I’m With You” and “The Getaway”. Flea and Chad put the band on their backs. Anthony developed more as a singer on those two recordings.
When, “Unlimited Love”, was released, I realized I was going to miss the Josh era. Not for Josh himself. The RHCP from 2010-2020.
John is a pure artist. He has to have a blank canvas to paint on. He’s very territorial. He and Josh could never exist in the same creative space as equal members of RHCP. (They’ve jammed in side projects, not creating on the marquee scene.) I also believe some of the 2010-2020 songs would be amazing to hear John’s interpretation live.
I hope that one day, RHCP re-record their early albums with Hillel, Navarro and Josh. Not a move to crap on any of those guitarists, but rather to show how they’ve all grown as musicians. Hear John’s interpretations of that music.

I was excited that JF was returning. But after the 2 albums, I was highly disappointed.
I was left underwhelmed myself. They were on a roll with californication, by the way, and stadium arcadium albums. Every song on each record was great.
Now the newer stuff is less great, with a couple of really good songs.

Thanks for the commentary. I unconsciously stop listening to RHCP once JF left the band.
However, many years later I found myself loving the music they made with Josh.
For example, Goodbye Angel, is my jam right now. Then I became obsessed with Dark Necessities.
Like you, I’d love to see Josh traveling with the band.
I also had the same experience. Once John left I didn’t consider buying the new albums with Josh. I did hear a few songs which I enjoyed but wasn’t like John’s stuff. Then I started getting obsessed with John old stuff as I was growing as a guitarist. Then at the height of me learning to play like frusciante, I was scrolling on IG and saw fleas announcement. Been 4 years and just now getting around to talking about it. Thanks for understanding the video by the way, apparently everyone thinks I’m doing a “news story”. I think they missed what I said the first 10 secs of the video about this being on my mind since then. 😂
I started learning bass and guitar after my father bought me the I'm with you album, and I fell in love with it. I had the opportunity to see both (Josh and John) on stage, and man, Josh is a beast. I think most people doesn't realize that the RHCP are still here nowadays thanks to him
Yes indeed! Who knows what would have happened to the Chili’s if Josh wasn’t around. Glad everything happened to have John back, even though Josh got the boot out.

I agree. Josh got a raw deal, but he's landed on his feet, so that's a great thing. They can't say he didn't gel with the band after 10 long years of yeoman work. Their loss.
For sure. Josh is still going strong! But I’m also glad John is back, so it’s just kind of weird.
The rhcp-stuff was way better with josh. Since john is back, the bar lowered a lot.
The band always said it was hard work to write music with josh. But the music they did with josh turned out great.
Now John is back and the band thinks that everthing they do is great without any effort. But they are wrong. All the new songs sound more like demos, because they think making music isn't work anymore with john.
I absolutely know that and understand that, but i do not really care about their hobby. I loved their songs with john before josh and i loved their songs with josh. But since john is back the band thinks everything they make is pure gold, but actually it is not. They should love their hobby and make awesome music. Maybe they will understand in the next album, that they have to polish their songs and put more effort in it.
are you mad the getaway was better but to say anything with josh was anywhere close to 1988-2007 is ignorant. you must have grown up with that era

I just bought tickets to see them in June, I was hoping to see John but I’ll be more than happy to see either one of them. I love Josh but he will never get the credit he deserves. John wasn’t fair to Josh but Josh practice John’s parts good enough to perform them. I love John but he definitely has his flaws.

John doesn't play Dave's & Josh's stuf cause he doesn't have to, plus they have plenty of good new stuff, plus Rick is more in tune with John as well.....
I agree he doesn’t have to. It just sucks for fans of the albums that Josh contributed to. They’ll never hear those live…
It's simple, John doesn't know the Dave or Josh songs. I guarantee you, if he's even ever heard them, he certainly doesn't sit at home at listen to them. They are songs that have NOTHING to do with him, and have zero meaning to him. Anthony, Chad and Flea were happy to never play those songs again if it meant they could have John back, otherwise they wouldn't have agreed to it (and they have agreed to it twice!). And if Josh didn't realize that he would be gone again if John wanted back in one day, then I'm sorry but that's some serious denial. And to your final point, having Josh be demoted to the backing guitarist when John comes back would be disrespectful to Josh, and completely distasteful.
It's their band, we don't own them, and we should stop trying to demand what WE think would have been a better decision. They don't need fans telling them how to do their jobs. What we should do is appreciate both Josh and John and what they have given us, a lot of wonderful music to get us through our lives. It's not a competition, it a gift to help us feel better inside.
I see what you mean. And by no means and I insinuating how they do their business, but we can definitely have an opinion on the matter, even a negative one at that.
I did however see a video of flea saying in an old video one of his favorite songs to play is aeroplane (which was a Dave era song) and you could tell that it was awkward as soon as he said it because John was right next to him. It’s like what you said, they’ll sacrifice never playing certain songs again, just to keep peace with John. But it really sucks for fans of the albums that Slovak, Navarro, and Klinghoffer put out and will never hear them live (for whatever the reason is).
Can you image the band getting together making up the set list for a show and flea, Anthony, or Chad mention (without thinking) a Josh or Dave song? And then awkwardly being like “oh… yea, sorry I forgot we can’t play that one…” 😂

It puts nothing on rhcp . Let them watch pearl jam . Your not in the band and Josh is nowhere as good as John .
