The Line 6 M series is underrated imho. The M5 has been on my board longer than any other pedal.

Agreed! The m13 runs a buffered bypass or true bypass as well. So there’s also that! Such a great value

We just need a demo of this "new" pedalboard now. I agree with you, for modulation, delay and reverb it is hard to beat the convinience and even the sound of multi-fx, and it is less cables to worry, less power supply.
John Frusciante used so many fx over the years that can be really expensive to get all those sounds. Another cool bonus of some multi-fx is that you can "emulate" the boost of John's CE-1, at the end of the pedal chain.
When I try to mimic Frusciante's Tone I use my Boss ME-80 in the following way. Compressor - Wah-Wah (Don't know where the processor put it in the chain, but appears to be here) - Boss Ds-2 - Drive Amp (Gain, bass and treble really high to "emulate" a Big Muff) - Eq as boost - Modulation depending the song (than it is just to change knobs ou save presets) - Delay same as modulation - Reverb.
Also I put the master lever high so I saturate the amps input (kind of the way John do with his CE-1). That way I still operate "pedal-like" with knobs, and sounds pretty close, to my ears at least.

That’s great man! It sounds like you’ve got the path down correctly. When you engage the wah and ds2 does is sound correct?
I use my compressor at the end of my path with the volume and compression maxed out to get that clean breakup tone. Works really well. I haven’t tried it in the beginning of my path though. My thought was to have it at the end, like he does the boss ce-1.
Also do you experience any latency with digital? My m-13 doesn’t have any noticeable latency.

@@frusciantegeartone The ds-2 plus Wah it is not exactly right, this is one of the reasons that I think it is probably before the ds-2 in the processor of the ME-80, when it should be after for Frusciante's Tones.
The compressor I use just for the clean songs (Soul to Squeeze, By the Way, Under the Bridge, etc), sustain around 60%, attack 40%, level 60%, kind of John is using with his Dyna Comp Today (at least in photos), and since I am boosting with the Eq and the Master Volume of Me-80 it is already sligth compressed. I should add that my amp is an Orange Crush Pro 60c that I put in the clean channel, volume of channel maxed, bass 40% treble 60%, no reverb, master depending where I am.
I really liked your ideia of compressor in the end, but since the path in me-80 is fixed and I don't have a Compressor pedal right now I cannot test. Maybe it is my excuse to buy another pedal kkkkkkkkkkkkk.
About latency I don't hear any.
I like a lot the ME-80. The simulations of the drives pedals are quite nice (not perfect), and most of modulations and delays are really good. What I don't like about it are a few things:
1 - ) No Fx loop - Not so important for Frusciante's tone but for other things I miss it
2 - ) The preamps sound and fell a little digital
3 - ) The reverbs are not nice too.

How is the noise gate and tuner on the m13? Is the tuner chromatic?

    • @frusciantegeartone
      @frusciantegeartone  3 місяці тому +1

From what I remember it was chromatic. Noise gate works well. I don’t have the m13 anymore but I loved it. The tap tempo/tuner foot switch gave out on me but easily fixed by decompressing the spring that activated the switch. Basically stretched the spring because it had been pressed so many times that it stayed compressed.

That would be interesting. Since they are the same company, I would imagine they are almost identical.

@@frusciantegeartone I think m13 has the same problem than hx: the drive pedals.
I know the effects would be better on Hx, but I dont think the diference of $$ worth it. So would be good to see than face to face. Didnot found it on UA-cam.
Today I bought an m13, and Will spend extra cash on wahwah, some drive pedals and Will spend less than buy an hx effects.

@@muriloalveszago you are right. The drives don’t sound/feel as real.
BUT the m13 doesn’t have the amp modeling, cabinets, and mic placement that the helix has. I think that makes the difference.
I still think real pedals are the best as far as sound goes.
I’m just fed up with cables, power supplies, white noise from pedals that don’t work together, loud clicks from true bypass switches, etc..
I think it’s a sacrifice of minimal tone quality and feel vs a 1 and done solution.
It would definitely suck to find out after spending $ on a helix to find out that I would prefer loud pops when switching pedals on/off.
I have contemplated getting an all analog Boss frusciante board. Silent switches, last forever, etc.
but then a problem of too many buffered boss pedals creates noise… I think I’m crazy 🤪🤣

The deciding factor for effects, amongst those that consider themselves....'discerning' enough to notice the difference, is tone. HOWEVER...tone, in so much as it aims at 'some version' of a 'generically' understood or described sound, is either 1.) subjective, or 2.) qualitatively meritocratic. IT CAN'T BE BOTH.
If its subjective, just accept the sound you can have for the least amount of money! NOBODY ELSE LISTENING WILL CARE! If they do, they are not musicians or music lovers, they are gearheads and wannabees, who only think they are capable of objective A/B comparisons, when blind tests repeatedly prove them wrong.
These kinds of 'fans' or fanatics, are not capable of appreciating what music is or what musicians do. They only crush on their chosen idol whose sound, if it were 'otherwise', would 'then' be ideal too. No component of 'any' musicians greatness is comprised by tone, which is why there is so much greatness with so much variety!
The hallmark of 'every' musicians 'state of play' is the way they connect, approach and leave the note. I can tell the difference between two great violinist playing a given piece of music when heard in the background over a bad phone connection...EVEN IF I'VE NEVER HEARD A GIVEN PERFORMANCE'S EXCENTRICITIES BEFORE!
Stop trying to 'buy' sonic proficiency, and start practicing to develop 'musical' proficiency, then someone might crush on you enough to win you fans FOR THE 'UNIQUE' WAY THAT YOU PLAY; even though they too will do you the disservice of thinking that what is unique about you is some particularity of tone.
Brian May intentionally manufactured a sound that is 'odd'. Guitarists thought it 'odd' and laughed at it when they first heard it. What ever happened to that guy, LOL! Be bold, be different, and not in the subtle way you think will win you appreciation. The M13 has everything you need to get you all the way to 'oddness' and beyond!

Very well said 💯. Even chasing a tone that you want can place you in a box too. Sometimes I surprise myself playing on a weird distortion setting I wouldn’t normally play with and come up with something totally organic and unrecognizable.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. 🙏
