    When my steps deploy I can hear the gears in the motors. Is this normal on the PowerStep XL? I have installed 2 sets before this (basic model steps) and they were super smooth. Sound is on both sides so I assume it's normal.

    • @XtremeTruckAuto
      @XtremeTruckAuto 6 годин тому

      With the amp step XL tend to be slightly louder when it come to the motor because of the linkages being mounted to the rocker bar instead of the rocker its self. This in turn allows for more sound to reverberate due to that bar. With that being said it shouldn't be a crazy amount louder.

    A laser pointer might be helpful when identifying wires in due to the tightly clustered wire bundles. Watching the video makes me realize that maybe I shouldn't tamper with the truck's electrical system now that I see what's involved. One misstep and who knows what new problems are created. Seems to be good quality power steps though. Good video.

    I was told that a rolling hard top could not be put on my 2024 Silverado straight as the front of bed wider than back.

    • @XtremeTruckAuto
      @XtremeTruckAuto 10 днів тому

      That is not true. Whoever told you that is full of it and needs to read the install instructions. All three of these cover are designed to have there rails parallel. It's done with how the rail and canister are made and some sort of shims for the rails to get them as parallel as possible (there is some margin of forgiveness). For example the Roll N Lock has you add to brackets to the bed by the bulk head and some butyl to fill the gaps on the front edge of the bracket. Retrax does it though the bed rails being wider that the bulk head than the tail gate. It is important that the rails are parallel as possible so the cover can function smoothly.

    I have a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500. I assume these installs are similar. When I finished and put in the fuse the boards retracted fully, but they never deployed when I opened the doors. The obd 2 plug that they sent only had the 2 purple wires. It did not have the other 2 wires like yours. I wonder if this is why they're not working. Can't get tech support until Monday. Super frustrating. Ive been trying to narrow this down all day. I know theyre installed correctly, but they don't work. Thanks

    Thanks for a super overview! I have a new Jeep Gladiator and will be buying one of these three. From what I have been able to find, Retrax is not an option for the Gladiator, so it comes to Truck Covers USA or Roll N Lock. One minor point is that the Gladiator already has 4 potential drain holes that would work if I went with Truck Covers. Any thoughts between these two? One concern I have is rattle--wonder if the vinyl covered Roll N Lock would be less likely to rattle.

The roll n lock will be a bit smoother in operation, as for which to go with I would like the TC USA epically if you do jeep things with it. TC USA you have the ability to set things on the cover with in reason with out damaging. As for the rattling I would think they would be about the same. Do you have a soft top?

      If you go disconnecting plugs from the BCM you will want to disconnect your battery. I believe there is a little tab that you will push towards the wire and you will pull the plug out. There might be a safety tab that needs to be pulled down to allow that tab to depress.

      I personally would try to keep everything a straight as possible but matching it wont hurt. It's not 100% necessary to be perfectly aligned. If the are too far off it in theory could cause binding issues but I have only really seen that with heim joints. Ball joints are much more forgiving.

      Are you Installing it on a Jeep similar to mine? Because the mounting can differ greatly depending on the application or even with what engine is in the vehicle. The easiest way to do it is to use the velcro they provide with the trigger and mount it on the fuse box that is typically located near the battery I have done this and it works great. I Just have mine wedged in-between the battery and the AC line that runs just behind the battery it has been this way for years and I have had zero issues with it. You could also see if they have a mounting kit for your vehicle I know what applications they have brackets has grown in the past few years. The last thing is you could do is build a bracket for it but once again that would differ greatly depending on the vehicle it was getting made for.

      Velcro crossed my mind after seeing another video where it was mounted to the top of the fuse box which had not crossed my mind nor was it mentioned anywhere in the instructions. Also my six shooter didn’t come with any velcro, but easy enough to get. Thanks for the reply, apologies for being a poopy pants. I ended up screwing it to the top of my fuse box. Probably should’ve used velcro but I was too lazy to go looking for it.

Took them and put them in but I'm researching either going with rock jock or metalcloak duroflex joints for the lower control arms and a-arm. Metalcloak doesn't have a option small enough for the front upper flex joint, so will be using rock jock for them, and Trail Forge has the rock jock joints along with direct swaps for the rubber bushings. They have a spot dedicated to showing options for swapping out the RC bushings.

      All I know is that it is a wire that has to do with a signal either going to or coming from the doors.

      Did you just cut those wires and splice with OBD wires? Or did you cut them and have to splice in the original wire in addition to the obd wire?

    • @XtremeTruckAuto
      @XtremeTruckAuto Місяць тому

      @@jeremyjones214 There is no cutting of any factory wires. The only wires you might trim up are the purple ones that run from the step's wiring harness to the obd2 plug that comes with the amp boards. You can see these purple wires at 8:14 in the video. As for the BCM they supply wire taps that you can see at 7:54 in the video.

    Awesome video. Great tool selection for on and off-road use. I have a WJ Cherokee. Interior storage space in it is actually very good. I have a roof rack that is 8’’ tall and is sloped in the front. One day I’m just looking at it and that was the light bulb moment. Why don’t I build a tool box to occupy that space. The sloped part for big items will not be able to be used. So I’ll build a box to occupy that space. Make it out of wood. Fiberglass it inside and out. Good weather stripping so it’s water tight. Stainless hardware and lockable. That will give me a lot of tool storage. I found some aluminum steps that attach to door latches on Amazon so getting up to the roof rack is easy

    About how far does the step drop below bottom of truck body?

    • @XtremeTruckAuto

      It's about 4 inches. The powerstep xl is roughly 6 inches.

    how water proof are the rock n lock and retrax covers?

    • @XtremeTruckAuto
      @XtremeTruckAuto 2 місяці тому

      They will hold majority of the water out of your bed, like 99% if properly installed. Keep in mind that no cover is 100% water proof. Car washes and some heavy rains can get past the cover but its because of gaps in the bed, bedrail caps, tailgates etc..

    My Retrax slide right off going down the highway. The one time didn’t have it locked.

      I have a few questions only because I have never herd of this happening and I'm curious. So assuming the cover came out of the canister and rails. Was it in the open position unlocked? Did it bent the stops at the end of the rails? Was it while you were accelerating?

    • @aaronlindsay5641
      @aaronlindsay5641 2 місяці тому

      @@XtremeTruckAuto the cover was closed meaning the bed was covered. I almost always would lock it but I didn’t that day. It did come off during a hard acceleration. It came out of the canister and stripped everything in the rails knocking down the tailgate when it let go. I couldn’t get off the road immediately so when I got turned around it was just in time to see a big rig run over it. Not being a busy highway and seeing it punted off the road I went on to take care of something, figured I could pick up what was left on my way back. Well when I got back it was gone. I really wanted to see what was left of it because there was absolutely nothing in the bed to give any clue as to what failed. This just happened a week ago, which is what led me to your video. I really, really liked that cover. Just doing a little research before buying another.

      @@aaronlindsay5641 That is crazy. I'm sorry that happened. If you were worried about that happening again, then the other two are a better choice. Because, the spring that pulls the cover open would keep that from happening again.

    I purchased this same item for my 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser. I have not tackled the job yet but I know I have to do some modifications (bracket & shortening the length of the steps) my question is with the electrical, do you know if the wires I tap into on the Land Cruiser are similar to the tundra as far as the colors and layout?

      I do not know, sorry. Best place to start would be to find a wiring diagram for both at the BCM and compare.

      If you are looking to replace just the big ones yes 5. Those are the ones I have had issue with and replaced. The smaller one that come with the kit are still going strong. When they go bad there will be a video. I might have found mine on sale I think I paid around $55 each for 4 of them about a year ago. I don't remember what I paid for the one in this video.
