    Great review and comparison of these retractable covers. I was leaning towards Retrax -- but this video solidified my decision. After watching the video, I realized that Xtreme is actually one of the local dealers here in the Kansas City area. I ordered the Retrax Pro XR from Xtreme - it arrived quickly and they were able install it this week (actually, Josh who did this video did the installation!). Super happy - fantastic work, Josh, Mark and Xtreme Truck & Auto!

    Had a Pace Edwards powered cover for 16 years, never any problems other than the keyfob needed to be replaced. Loved the cover and especially the ease of use and ability to stop the cover in any spot, allowing to keep as much of the load as possible covered, and for lighter objects, could even use the cover to hold a taller item as the cover co5 be stopped against the object and it locks into place.

    Retrax Pro with the gloss finish on my '14 Sierra and still looks brand new after 195,000 miles. The only problem I have is that about a year ago the right side lock stopped opening with just using the flap. I have to open the tailgate and give it a slight tug backward for it to release. I just want to see other options now that the price is so high but will probably go with another on my new Silverado.

      I have a few questions only because I have never herd of this happening and I'm curious. So assuming the cover came out of the canister and rails. Was it in the open position unlocked? Did it bent the stops at the end of the rails? Was it while you were accelerating?

    • @aaronlindsay5641
      @aaronlindsay5641 8 місяців тому +1

      @@XtremeTruckAuto the cover was closed meaning the bed was covered. I almost always would lock it but I didn’t that day. It did come off during a hard acceleration. It came out of the canister and stripped everything in the rails knocking down the tailgate when it let go. I couldn’t get off the road immediately so when I got turned around it was just in time to see a big rig run over it. Not being a busy highway and seeing it punted off the road I went on to take care of something, figured I could pick up what was left on my way back. Well when I got back it was gone. I really wanted to see what was left of it because there was absolutely nothing in the bed to give any clue as to what failed. This just happened a week ago, which is what led me to your video. I really, really liked that cover. Just doing a little research before buying another.

    Thanks for a super overview! I have a new Jeep Gladiator and will be buying one of these three. From what I have been able to find, Retrax is not an option for the Gladiator, so it comes to Truck Covers USA or Roll N Lock. One minor point is that the Gladiator already has 4 potential drain holes that would work if I went with Truck Covers. Any thoughts between these two? One concern I have is rattle--wonder if the vinyl covered Roll N Lock would be less likely to rattle.

      Sorry to get back to you later than I had hoped. Things have been crazy here. The roll n lock will be a bit smoother in operation, as for which to go with I would like the TC USA epically if you do jeep things with it. TC USA you have the ability to set things on the cover with in reason with out damaging. As for the rattling I would think they would be about the same. Do you have a soft top?

    • @XtremeTruckAuto
      @XtremeTruckAuto  9 місяців тому +1

      First- Yes it does require drilling for the drain tubes. depending on the truck you might be able to drill plastic bed plugs and not the bed. However chevy and toyota you will be putting holes in the bed.
      Second- All 3 of the covers do incredibly well at keeping water out. However no cover is 100% waterproof. So car washes and torrential down pour you might a bit of water in the bed.
      Third- Yes they do it is rare. Most of the time it gets clogged is because people don't brush the leaves off of the cover and they fall in the canister.
      Thanks for watching hope this helps.

    i just picked up a 2024 f250 8' bed. i'm considering these manual retractable covers. i was using bak revolver x2 for my 2017 f150 and it was falling apart after i'd say 5 years, and my uncle has the revolver X4s for his 2021 f250 8'. his X4s is also not in good shapes after just 2 years, anything that involved glueing is peeling. I love the revolver covers idea, just poor engineering. that being said, im looking for a manual retractable cover that is metal and satin/matte black (not glossy). which one is the best in overall aspects? prices aren't a factor, im looking for quality and durability and usability, more expensive doesn't always mean good products.

      Most snow and stuff like that can be brushed off and the cover will function fine. But, when it come to ice it can freeze shut. It can depend on if it is sleet or freezing rain because the freezing rain will cause more problems than the sleet. Here in Kansas and Missouri rarely an issue but some where like New York or a place that gets lake effect winter weather I could be a different story.

    Of the retractable covers out on the market, is the retrax one of the better weather/rain proof? I wouod use mine for hunting/camping and looking for a better weather proof one. Thanks

    • @XtremeTruckAuto
      @XtremeTruckAuto  Рік тому +1

      To be honest, very rarely do I see any weather proof issues with any of these rolling covers. 99% of the time there is an issue it has to do with how it was installed or it had been abused in some way or another. I would have to say they are all about equally weather proof.
      One thing I will point out is the Retrax pro MX and TC UAS you will have the ability to put some weight in the cover its self. If you ever need to get something out of the back it's nice to have the ability to put a couple of thing on the cover instead of the ground.
      Retrax pro MX and TC USA hold up to 500 pounds of evenly distributed weight.

      The Truck Cover USA would be the strongest and I know they have one that has a tool box built into it. Retrax would be the next strongest fallowed by the Roll N Lock. Honestly, I know for a fact that you will be making quite a bit of noise to get into any of them tool box included. It's not easy to get into any of these covers. I have had to get into them when people have had their tailgate handle break and its a challenge. If you are looking for security being the only deciding factor. Truck Cover USA would be my recommendation.

    • @XtremeTruckAuto
      @XtremeTruckAuto  6 місяців тому

      That is not true. Whoever told you that is full of it and needs to read the install instructions. All three of these cover are designed to have there rails parallel. It's done with how the rail and canister are made and some sort of shims for the rails to get them as parallel as possible (there is some margin of forgiveness). For example the Roll N Lock has you add to brackets to the bed by the bulk head and some butyl to fill the gaps on the front edge of the bracket. Retrax does it though the bed rails being wider that the bulk head than the tail gate. It is important that the rails are parallel as possible so the cover can function smoothly.

      The Retrax has sealed ball barring rollers. So you don't need to lubricate them and shouldn't . Thing like WD 40 and other lubrications will get inside the baring, gum them up and cause more issues than help. The other covers will need lubrication every so often I recommend 303 because it will clean and lubricate without leaving a residue that will build up over time and cause issues.

      @@XtremeTruckAuto what if it was an option to have a handle on the inside or a key for those who need it? My new truck works with my phone so I carry zero keys now and I really like it. Really hoping you guys make something for the Rivian!! Please❤️❤️❤️

      @@freezebrain4905 I defiantly could see that happening in the future. Now that I am thinking about it the power open and close versions for these covers do not have keys. They are quite a bit more expensive but they do have a key fob..... so not much better. A phone app for the powered version would be super cool and then I guess you could have the key fob for back up. Fingers crossed they do something like that.

      I’d like to have them programmable to the garage door opener that comes in most vehicles. Key fob as a back up.

      I've been using a Truck Covers USA cover for nine years. I have the key but never use it. My tailgate has electric lock so the cover is locked with a closed tailgate. When I want to open the cover there is a handle attached to a steel cable that is pulled to release the cover. There is also a handle you can then use to release the latch if you don't want to cover to go completely open.

    Sorry, a search of a vehicle includes the bed of the truck. Show me case law that says there needs to be a search warrant needed to access the bed, it's no different than the trunk of a sedan.

      10 year cop, presently a detective. Any facts or circumstances that would give rise to probable cause for a vehicle search(i.e. plain sight doctrine) are not going to cover a locked container without a warrant. Even a K9 alerting on a vehicle isn't going to satisfy most courts for a separate, locked container, especially one not in the cab or within arms reach of an occupant.

      @76erGrant Рік тому +2

      Trunk of a sedan typically has a button or lever inside the cab that "opens" the trunk or a passageway from inside the cab through the rear seat. Therefore, not a separate, locked container.

      Keep in mind that I'm a mechanic NOT a lawyer and by no means qualified to give legal advice. So take what I say with a grain of salt. You should look into US vs Bradley. This involves a locked glove box in a vehicle that is being searched. Now some trucks will have the button that unlocks/opens the tailgate so I have no idea how that would happen to shake out.
      Like I said in the description of the video and this comment I'm not a lawyer. I am not qualified to give legal advice.

      Any one know of a video of security? How noisy and difficult is it to get inside. I saw one from Rollnlock .But that was years ago. I had no problem with the two Rollnlocks that I’ve had.

      @@76erGrantTrucks have tailgates. Tailgates are typically unlocked when your doors are unlocked (in most trucks made in the last 15 years). Therefore, not a separate locked space.

    Sorry but peragon is the best

      Strongly disagree. I have had more problems and unsatisfied customers when I comes to the Peragon. Their lock system is the worst part of that cover. Just pulled one off for a customer the other day and installed a ultra flex. We even put it back in the box for them so they could send it back.

    Im looking for a retractable cover.
    Are there any that will allo the use of TraRac sliding rack with the bed slide rails?
    The Roll and Lock M series looks like it leaves the bed rails free for them to fit. But do you recommend any in particular?
    Thanks

      Thule might make a foot for the TracRac that will work with the bed covers t channel rails, but all of the one that I have see either hook over the bed rail and clamp on or use Thule's track system. The roll n lock would be your best bet to get there track system to fit with the cover, but I have neve tried to use them both. I would take some measurements if you have the TracRac system already and give Rollnlock a call to see if it will work. All three companies have great customer service.
