Cape Wrath to Land's End, Part18
After probably my hardest day on the walk due to weather, worn kit, and just being generally soaked for way too long, I continue from Padstow grateful for a short respite from the rain and wind, but now the main focus is getting safely to Land's End, cutting corners if needed.
Firstly, I just need to get to Newquay where I have a zero-day planned and can dry out and rest a bit, get laundry done, etc, before "the final push."
From Newquay, I enjoy a great day's walking under sunshine and get to see Cornwall in a much happier mood with people having fun on the beaches and the waves.
After a night's camping a little inland at Cambrose, I return to the coast at Portreath, and the walking becomes increasingly easy, but the poor weather returns. Once again, I am grateful to have a place booked at St. Ives from where I only have one full day's walking left on my journey - this feels like cause for celebration, although the pubs and cafes are mobbed with people sheltering from torrential rain!
The next day is drier with mist clearing now and then - and an atmospheric walk along rugged coastline leads me to Pendeen Beach, where I cut inland to refill the flask and enjoy a pint. I visit Cape Cornwall - a memorable moment sitting on the rocks looking over the gleaming ocean.
It's been a long day so I'm tired by the time I arrive at the Cott Valley Youth Hostel, and Andrew and Bella come down from their campsite to join me for a chat and dinner before my final night in the tent.
It's now only 5 or 6 miles walk down to Land's End, which goes quickly even though I'm being particularly careful at this stage! I arrive at Land's End expecting an anti-climax, but Andrew and Bella are there to help make the occasion special and set a celebratory mood by presenting some fizz! And there was another surprise visitor awaiting...
A bit late with this final part as I've been busy trying to settle a rescue collie in the house - really want this to work out! Thanks to all for the lovely encouraging comments as I've posted this series - it's been a long haul video editing (was walking it the easy part!?) but it really did help knowing it was being enjoyed by others, whether they were planning something similar, looking for inspiration, reminiscing about their own past adventures or just appreciating the journey down this beautiful Island.

After a night at the excellent Westacott Farm Campsite West of Bideford, I enjoy being back on the Atlantic Coast. I find the going a bit harder than expected (seems to be a common thing on the South West Coast Path from what I've read/watched!). I meet up with another long distance walker and we share the rest of the day walking the path together and chatting constantly so that the miles seem ...

The weather's beginning to test me as I continue down the North Devon Coast, passing through Combe Martin to get to Ilfracombe. A couple of shorter days seems to help me relax. At this point I'm conscious my "journey" has turned into a "challenge" that I'm determined to complete, rather than enjoying each day for what it is, as I had been managing to do for the last 9 weeks. I head on to Barnst...

I head down the beach from Berrow under moody skies and on to where the coastline takes a Westward turn at Bridgwater Bay. I'm now finding it harder to keep a lid on my excitement about reaching the South West Coast Path in a couple of days, and what feels like the "final straight" down towards Land's End. Before this, I've got the Quantock Hills to look forward to. Each day continues to be rew...

It was nice to be back on a national trail, and I am impressed by Offa's Dyke Path, not just the scenery it passes through, but also the villages, services, camping opportunities, sign-posting and the state of the trail, although there are a few rickety stiles to be wary of! There was a very different feel to the journey on this section whilst crossing from the edge of the Peak District at Congleton to the Welsh border at Llanymynech. It's a nice enough part of the country but more set up for day-to-day living rather than holidaying, camping or indeed long distance walking! On to the dale highway to re join the Pennine way in there peaks chanllage nearby the settle railway line through the Yorkshire dales. It would cut of the long walk up and the climb up until you got to gills to drop down to dent valley in yorshire dales park

    Belated congratulations on completing your CW to LE journey. An awesome effort and a dream fulfilled. A huge thank you for posting these video diaries - its been fantastic to watch and follow your trip whilst listening to your thoughtful commentary. I have really admired your selflessness and positivity along the way. I’ve particularly enjoyed the SW coast path section, and would love to do a few more sections of that - having completed various elements of it in the past just doing ‘walks’. I appreciated the part on the section out to Zennor when you admitted giving yourself a talking to to concentrate on just putting one foot in front of each other. It’s nearly 40 years since I did my JOGLE - back in the day when I was 18 and a wee daftie! But I can still remember the thoughts (like yourself) of thinking actually it might get done… by the time I had reached Devon. Although not as scenic as the SWC path. You wore out your Mudclaws... I got through a pair of Hitec GPR2 (anyone remember them!) Wishing you the very best in all your future endeavours - and the ultras!

    I've done a fair bit on long distance hiking, and I'm coming to Britain for the first time to hike the Coast to Coast route this summer. I'm inspired by your statement that short days are better than zero days. I have a tendency to push hard and do big miles, and then take zeros to recover. I think it's time for me to change that approach. Thanks, mate, I really enjoyed this series. =)

    • @endorphins479

      What a great trip to look forward to for a first visit to Britain, enjoy! Yeah I can understand why zero days are popular on stuff like the PCT where resupply means hitching a lift off the trail then trying to get back - for practical reasons more than the rest benefit! But two short days instead is more possible in most of Britain (except the Cape Wrath Trail!) and I defo enjoyed that and its benefits more. Atb.

      Hi Dave, good to hear from you and glad you've got plans for continuing that same journey. Some emotional memories there for you, it must seem lame when I go on about how much Finn meant to me on my journeys, actually big part of the walk was for healing which it did. Not included in the videos are the moments I ended up in tears when getting in touch with a dog rescue shelter and then deleting my application as I knew I still wasn't ready (happened at Kington, Offas Dyke Path, the day after a border collie came running up to me with stick in mouth like Finn). By the time I finished the walk I knew I was ready and now enjoy a wonderful four legged companion (from that rescue shelter) that absolutely loves running with me. I'm looking forward to "shared adventures" once again. all the best mate.

On a much lesser scale can relate to how having a goal changes the outlook as I was in a total mess after losing my dog in 2022 and found I couldn't look forward to anything anymore. Later that year I decided I needed to switch off from everything and embrace what makes me happy, in 2023 I walked from Cape Wrath to Land's End never putting pressure on myself to get there (well at least the first 95%!) but just to indulge in a simple act that I knew I would enjoy. Hi! The signposting was really good from what I remember - there was one section I didn't enjoy having to walk along to road verge down to Cannich (it wasn't too busy but wasn't the best walking), they might have fixed that now hopefully

    • @endorphins479
      @endorphins479 9 місяців тому

      Just checked on walkhighlands - they have definitely replaced the road part with new paths (which I'm sure will be freshly signposted) so it's a much better wall than when I did it. Enjoy!

    That was a fine episode Scott, really enjoyed that. So nice that you stop to look at things on the way, not rushing too much, enjoying local hospitality. So glad I have not binge watched. Certainly appreciate the effort you put in making the videos to share, because it’s obviously not for money with the limited views. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of your journey. Many great personal memories brought back in seeing your journey.

      Thanks Robert, I was trying to make the walk more of a "holiday" than an endurance challenge hence stops etc. The videos I get pleasure back from sharing the journey knowing like-minded folks get something out of it, and more selfishly I have log to keep the memories

    Hi Scott, sorry to say I have only just found your channel, so impressed so far. Just finished watching this journey and what a journey you went on, it was captivating viewing and I enjoyed every minute of it and will definitely watch it again. Loved your attitude to it, the filming, the way your friends joined in and your love of a pint or two. I will start working my way through your back catalog of videos which I’m really looking forward to. Hope you and your family had a great Xmas. Cheers Glyn.

    Anothef great series of vlogs. Like the idea of food drops. Did S to N and went via Strathon bothy because my knee hurt and road walking made it worse. Only after an MRI did I find out that I had a knee problem and a stress fracture in one on mt lower leg bones!!!

    • @endorphins479
      @endorphins479 9 місяців тому

      Do you think the road walking caused the sress fracture? I was certainly aware of pains (tho mild) after long sections of tarmac/gravel on this year's walk. Drop bags are great but always a worry mice etc get in that's why I used tupperware - have to carry that tho

    • @davidalexander287
      @davidalexander287 9 місяців тому

      @endorphins479 no, during the descent from towards Glencoul bothy, felt something go and by the time I got there my knee was swelling. By the morning, it was better, but then did shorter days. Not a lot of options. But I found that walking on soft ground helped. That was in 22 and this year I did the route you took from Inchnadamph.

    This video was pretty interesting for me. The section into Knighton being memorable for the ups and downs. Unfortunately I had pushed too hard with an Achilles injury which really made me move at snail pace. Would not have managed without walking poles ( first time I used them on a long distance walk). Retired injured in Knighton but booked accommodation and watched some British Lions rugby in the pub , and food and ale, to recover. I grew up in Monmouthshire so at least I had done a lot of the area to the south from Boy Scout days onward ( yes I am that old and scouting was great in those days) so will look forward to watching next episode.

    No Spurtle required. I was extremely concerned that you were not going get out of Sango Sands Campsite let alone complete this journey; after witnessing you start with, well, what can only be described as the world’s wateriest porridge (Part 1: 1.59 to 2.02). What a horror show that was. Thankfully my concern was totally misplaced. Wow, what a journey; congratulations this was an amazing achievement, and it was an absolute pleasure to share in a small way in your experience and adventure.
