Cape Wrath to Land's End, Part7

  • I would get to enjoy some company for the next few days as I headed past Edinburgh into a quieter part of the Pentland Hills following Thieves Road to West Linton, walking and catching up with workmates. The next day I'd continue along the Cross Borders Drove Road to Peebles where I had a chance encounter with a old friend, then enjoying some of my favourite walking for a while along the crest of the hills South of the River Tweed, eventually dropping down to Innerleithen where I'd meet up with friends and stay the night at the Traquair Arms Hotel, ready to continue the next day as a group walking to Melrose along the Southern Upland Way. The weather had remained kind, but it grew rather hot and we probably should have carried more water on our walk from Melrose to Jedburgh. Our route took us along the Borders Abbeys Way and the St. Cuthberts Way, which included a long section along the roman road "Dere Street". I'd be meeting some of my first other "end2enders" coming North too, always met with excited chatter and it felt good to be one of them at last!
Once again, on this section I find myself reflecting how amazing this journey has been so far. It's nothing more than going for a walk each day, sure, but my head is already in a completely different place at this point than when doing routine stuff. And because I'd "done epics" before, I was relaxed knowing that wherever I got to on this walk, I'd be more than just ready to get back to that "routine stuff" once again - it would be with renewed appreciation!

Thanks Ray, after being inspired to do this for years just from meeting others doing it, it felt great to finally be having a go at it myself 👍

You describing bumping into to your auld friend and her dogs by her house was delightful Scott. I like the way you said 'coincidence?' I just ordered The Salt Path. Cheers.

That's great, it's a lot of video to get through (both watching and editing!) and still not half-way 😯

Aye, the Salt Path is a belting book. Did part of the Devon coastal path, sea level to 100 ft+, rinse and repeat, knackering. Was young & fit then, so fair play to this auld couple, inspiring.

That book defo resonated with me as in 2011 through my own stupidity I ended up in a coma and lost some mobility in my right leg, and was given a plastic splint to allow me to continue walking (running was out of the question). Less than 1yr later I became UK athletics trail running champion 2012. Motivation can come from unexpected places, even negativity can be flipped into positivity. The Salt Path seems to echo that

As an aside, reading the Salt Path, inspired me to do the SWCP earlier this year. I did it in fifty days to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the path. Pales in to insignificance compared to what you have done.

That's some going and some journey mate, well done! Hardly insignificant 😆 SWCP was way tougher than I expected too but in a really nice way. The Salt Path is a very inspiring and thought-provoking read for sure

Hi Scott, wonderful few days there, and it must have been really nice to spend it with some mates, speaking to people instead of sheep. Haha
It's just fantastic what a beautiful country we live in once you get out in to the wilds.
Thanks for sharing with us as always
    Take Care

Thanks Dave yes was good to have company after the lonesome spell in the Highlands, in fact the next couple of weeks I rarely felt alone as was meeting up and chatting with other walkers each evening 🍺, all good👍

That was a good one Scott. I think I commented earlier in your walk that I may binge watch, but decided that was not the best way. Done quite a bit of walking, outdoor stuff, climbing etc,( when younger) but never got to really appreciate the border country. Coming for trips to Scotland it was mostly west and north coast. So much lovely walking country , bit like the Welsh borders which I did more of. Will be gently watching your progress over next episodes. Thanks for making the effort to put these videos together.

Thanks again for your message Robert yes the borders quite different again, great walking country for sure and plenty good LDRs to explore between great towns and by nice rivers!

Coincidentally I was in Edinburgh today, and I hated it, the traffic was horrendous - it reminded me why I moved up here.
I know the Caulstane Slap and the Pentlands part pretty well, the bit around Almondell, and been on the SUW section to the Three Brethern. Those will be the last bits of your journey that I'll have been on though, alll new from here on !

Back in the 90s i used to run from work at Livingston to Dalry every Wednesday along almonddell and union canal! Anyway yes traffic was a bit of a culture shock that day from S Queensferry but it used to be part of Mon to Fri for me too, felt weird walking back through there
