  • After wild-camping at Black Moss Reservoir, I follow the Pennine Way deeper into the Peak District and enjoy some shorter-distance days having gotten myself ahead of schedule. The "schedule" is due to having accommodation booked for the following week and beyond where camping isn't going to be an easy option. Unfortunately this also means I'm arriving into Crowden and Edale at the weekend and lucky to be given space for my tent! I celebrate reaching the end of the Pennine Way (twice!), it does feel like another milestone has been reached on this journey.
    As a new week starts the weather continues to elude the storm forecasts and so the walking remains a pleasure whilst I follow limestone dales South and West through the Peak District to Buxton. The next day I head over Axe Edge Moor and follow the Dane Valley down towards Congleton. Both these days are full of variety, presenting minor challenges, surprises and some of the most enjoyable walking of my journey.

    Another great film Scott. I remember being eaten alive by midges in Crowden campsite. I watched your Kerry Way the other day. You looked so young then😂

    Going great Scott, ah felt doing the Pennine way was a breeze, until Kinder Scout & Jacobs Ladder, that absolutely burst me. Funny how the mind lets the body shut down a wee bit when it knows it’s the last day of hiking, now you’re into new territory for me, although ah had my one & only Pizza Express in Buxton lol. Ace film again man 👍

      Thanks Raymie - and I can relate to the mind/body shut down thing but for me it's often before I start a big physical effort, rather than the end, marathons or multiday walks or runs - generally get really lethargic the days before and can't be arsed but on the day it's boom, totally charged for it

    I'd been wondering if you might bump into Elli and Otto (rescue dog). Over the past few weeks I've followed her vlog and noticed several places she'd been to and that you'd also visited.
    Thanks for part 11 Scott.

      You're welcome - yes we both stayed same place for two nights but she took a more Northern route through Cheshire to Wales so didn't see her again, but would meet other end2enders later

    Great to see your route unfold and how you are connecting each part. You seem to be making some great choices to keep the walk interesting. Really enjoying this series.

      Thanks Stewart, I admit the next bit was tricky to find "nice walking" but it wasn't for long (a couple of days on roads and along canals)

    I've never heard Crowden pronounced any other way than with a rhyming start with corvine bird (crow) rather than bovine mammal (cow), much like Snowden. Both get a mention in the Manchester Rambler. I lived in the area until I was 18 and walked all over this part of the world.

    A lot more familiar ground for me as you come south ( I live in West Mids). Still some lovely walking to be had. Looks like you are heading to Wales( I have not previewed), which is in my opinion a good choice. Glad to see you being sensible and taking advantage of the pubs etc. Been to a few of them myself!

      The pubs and local ales and meals were a big part of the journey for me by this stage! As I've commented before, this is why I'm probably one of the few end2enders that finished fatter than when they began

    Im definitely gonna attempt going from cape wrath to london around next spring-summer, I havent watched all of your journey but how have you found wild camping in England? Its my main point of concern that im trying to plan around. Is it ever possible to find places where its pretty much guaranteed that no one will see you?

    • @endorphins479
      @endorphins479  Рік тому

      That sounds an amazing journey and I totally relate to the concerns w.r.t. wild camping in England as I just couldn't get comfortable with it. My loss - I met so many inspiring hikers doing exactly that and confidently, those folks would be better placed to advise. I'm used to just camping wild in Scotland, but with the right to do so and proper wild as not within sight of people's houses etc. As such I spent most of my hike through England based on a lot of planning and using campsites - they usually charge a lot less for a backpacker but it still felt like a compromise if I'm honest. "trying not to be seen in case I get moved on" was never part of the experience I wanted from this journey, even though wildcamping would always be my preference. Not sure if any of that helps.

      @endorphins479 fair enough, to be fair having the comfort to shower at a campsite sometimes is just worth any price. Are you having to book your campsites or can you just walk in and ask if they have an available pitch?

    • @endorphins479
      @endorphins479  Рік тому

      @rrrrrrrrrr916 the campsites along the established long distance trails were well used to catering for backpackers (Pennine Way, Offas Dyke, South West Coast Path) and some said its best to book but nearly all said we always try to make room for a backpacker. I would be far more relaxed about wildcamping along SWCP as it seems generally accepted, but I guess that's not going to help you get to London!arrive late (dusk) and leave early (dawn) seems to be the advice. I enjoyed finishing early after getting some miles in and chilling each day, after a shower

      It's a GoPro Steve, a fairly old one at that but does 4k res (I don't use 4k to keep the images stable as I'm filming on the fly as/when and fits back into front rucksack pocket without having to break stride)

    So is there a generally-agreed-upon route for most end-to-enders from this point to Lands End, or does each plan their own path?

    • @endorphins479
      @endorphins479  5 місяців тому

      It's each to their own, but there's obvious sections most people end up on, e.g. I met one chap that didn't link up to Offas Dyke cos he'd seen it and went more through eastern shropshire way
