  • Heading down into Torridon from Fisherfield, firstly enjoying a long but tiring trek along the remote North-East shore of Loch Maree before camping and eating too much at Kinlochewe. Keeping with the theme of trying to explore unfamiliar ground, I took a gamble with a high route across from the Torridon Giants, hoping the weather would clear as forecast, before dropping to Strathcarron by the Bealach Ban. This day was certainly one of my trip highlights. Then on towards Bendronaig Lodge, Maol Bhuidhe Bothy and eventually camping in a glen which I seemed to have had to myself, enjoying a glorious evening accompanied only by the sound of rushing water.
    Other than that first night at Sandwood Bay, I'd managed to continue to avoid camping in the same spots from my previous C.W.T. trek, and kept at least some of each day "different" from that journey too.
    Up to this point the trip seems to be going well, with enjoyment beyond expectations, and enough days behind me now to have built confidence in the kit and how my legs are coping with the weight of the pack whilst crossing some of the toughest terrain I'd likely encounter on the journey South.

    Great stuff, Scott. The trailer from last week's episode had me guessing which path/s you might be taking. I figured it would be Coulin to Achnashellach or possible Coire Lair.
    With the Bealach Ban inclusion and down to Coulags and Strathcarron station, your vlog has brought back some wonderful memories. I think it was in the mid 1970's me and my late wife were touring and walking using the train. Gorgeous morning to Inverness from Kyle when we passed Plockton and Stromeferry. It was so beautiful on a whim we just got off at Strathcarron. No rooms at the hotel so the landlord phoned a 'taxi' and told us to try Lochcarron. The taxi was a farmer. He put our bags in the boot, excuses to smell, asked Susie into the front passenger seat and told me not to mind the ewe I was sitting next to!

      Nice story Mike, thanks! I guess at the time the definition of a taxi was a bit "wooly" 🙊. The footage of Finn in the video is actually Coire Lair 👍

    Interesting question about the scallop shell sign. Best explanation is Camino de Santiago or more likely Camino of St Andrew. (Camino means The Way and relates to a pilgrimage) The shell symbolically indicates an array of directions which lead to one destination.
    Hope others here might know more or correct me.

    • @endorphins479
      @endorphins479  Рік тому +1

      Yes in fact that's what piqued my interest as I'd spent 2 months following that symbol across France then Spain to Santiago de Conpostella back in 2016! Did wonder if there was a connection - someone else here has suggested same.

      Thanks Paul it sometimes feels like I should edited it down a lot more but then again its a long haul and so too is the vlog I guess 😀. I used Harvey Maps for CWT, took compass but didnt need to use as had 2 phones (one for backup) but probably didnt verify location as often as I should have (e.g. heading towards Loch Maree!)

      yes it was using the phones and maps on them offline so could use flightmode and battery saving mode. Sure saves carrying 50 OS maps or whatever people must have had to do back before!

    Re: pilgrims scallop shell - all the lines on the shell represent pilgrims coming from different angles and converging towards one point. Widely seen across European religious trails. Could be a local Saint where you are, every county in the UK have a number! I'll have a look at where you are and get back if I can find one

      @@endorphins479 might be worth pointing this out to Scottish Pilgrim Routes Forum (own website) or the British Pilgrimage Trust, they dont have it marked as a route on their map covering others, sure they'd be interested in your find. Cant think its a prank, that plaque looked properly attached.
