I’m kind of disappointed in Nicki, because aside from ‘Pink Friday 2’, I would’ve considered myself a fan of her music, but ‘Big Foot’ is definitely the worst thing she’s ever done (including her features like ‘Trollz’!).

I wish that "Love Wins All" by IU would have charted yesterday, but it didn't. The song did well on the iTunes charts, but not with the streaming. The video is heartbreaking.

Song Recommendation: Turn the Lights Back On-Billy Joel
Billy Joel is tied with Elton John as my favorite solo artist of all time. Despite that, I still chose to stay cautious towards this song. I've always have been this way towards new songs made by some of my favorite artists who's been around for decades after how Cold Heart turned out. I only gave in to listen to this song after I saw it had a pretty good Rate Your Music score. Luckily, the song was very good!! The production is pretty solid, the lyrics are well written, and the singing is good. The chorus in particular is damn good. I already currently really like it, but I won't be surprised if by the end of the year, I start to really love it.

This is my favourite type of Billboard Breakdown episode - a hefty list of diverse songs, all building up to the big story - and Mark nailed his commentary, making me feel pity for Nicki and just roasting the hell out of the alt-right chuds. Kudos, Mark.
Also, the Ice Spice song slaps, Hiss might be objectively better, but I’ve been listening to Fart a lot more the past week.
Nicki thought she had a Killshot...when in reality she had The Kickback.

This is probably the Billboard Breakdown Ive been looking forward to the most, and was upset it wasnt posted last night lol. Wanted to see him talk about the Nicki/Megan disses and Tom and Ben. Seeing them make the Hot 100 was a shock, and while they wont get #1 on here, they have on everything else. And Ben's verse had me laughin the whole time

1) I'm glad that "Hiss" made it to #1. It not only knocked that awful and bland Jack Harlow song down a peg, but also kept Nicki Minaj and Tom MacDonald's songs away from the #1 spot! 😃
2) "Beautiful Things" will likely make the Year-End Hot 100 with the way things are going. It's at #8 after all.
3) Conner Smith's journey to the Hot 100 was pretty interesting. I wonder how long "Creek Will Rise" will last! 🤔
4) "Home" being referred to as "commercialcore" nearly had me dying! 😂
5) I wouldn't be surprised if YG Marley's song got more attention since his grandfather's biopic is coming out soon.

"Home" also reminds me of fun.'s "We Are Young" with the twinkling piano melody line. So the comparison to early 2010's indie-pop/rock is dead on.
So ... is there a possibility that "Creek Will Rise" may be a reference to/inspired by "If The Creek Don't Rise" by Dylan LeBlanc? I know they're very different songs (one an upbeat, high tempo country rock hook-up anthems, the other a gentle, intimate, heartwrenchingly vulnerable acoustic folk song about hoping against hope to mend a deeply broken former relationship), but apart from the title, I think I also hear some similar guitar chords in the chorus? (I could be wrong, I'm pretty tone deaf and know very little about music theory.)
Eh, it's probably just wishful thinking because "If The Creek Don't Rise" is one of my all time favorite songs, and Dylan LeBlanc is an extremely underrated artist who deserves more mainstream recognition.
Me when seeing the worst songs of the week: Yeah, not gonna disagree. One of them is a fully grown adult insulting someone’s mom being dead despite having lost her dad (does she not see the hypocrisy there). The other is someone who tries too hard to be “edgy,” is much better when he steers clear of discussing politics and/or being edgy and him associating with someone who self owned himself when throwing a hissy fit when it came to a particular hit song from years ago is ironic since said self owner claims hip hop isn’t music (I’ll take 1,000 for statements that make no sense, Alex). Seriously, it’d be like if the “White Boy” with “pretty blue eyes” did a song with Alex Jones. Hope I don’t need to explain why that would suck.

Big Foot I Was Straight Forward In Attacking it Because EVERYONE KNOWS That Song is ABYSMAL
Man, this week was pretty bad overall with not much quality at all... with the exception of:
Best: 'HISS' - Megan Thee Stallion: Yeah, this song is awesome. The shots, flows, and even the beat are great even if it took a little bit to come together for me. Happy this hit number one, and I am really excited for Megan's album.
HM: 'All I Need Is You' - Chris Janson: Didn't exactly have many options for an honorable mention this week to the point where I almost didn't have one, and I'm kind of surprised I picked this one. Never really cared for/about Chris Janson, and this song is fairly generic, but it is very pleasant and has a very nice hook. It was a tossup between this, 'Spin You Around (1/24)', and 'Creek Will Rise'. Also, I agree that Ice Spice's song isn't half bad, and I would probably endorse it more if not for hook/title that crosses the rubicon in terms of stupidity for my enjoyment. I am a bit concerned for her career long-term though :/
Worst (Tie): 'Big Foot' - Nicki Minaj: You and everyone have highlighted how terrible this is. Honestly, I think she somehow made a song worse than 'Only" to become the worst thing I've heard from her (which is shocking). I wouldn't be surprised if this kneecaps 'FTCU' and 'Everybody' btw.
Worst (Tie): 'FACTS' - Tom MacDonald & Ben Shapiro: ... I know this is tied for the worst of the week, but I honestly think 'Big Foot' is worse. This song isn't shocking. It's just really funny. Tom raps about what I assume he's been rapping about for years, with all of the sloganeering and contradictions as you would expect. Meanwhile, Ben Shapiro's verse had me bursting out in laughter. It sounds like a verse for an Epic Rap Battles of History parody of Ben Shapiro. Despite, how much I laughed at his, this is still tied for the worst on principle.
DM (Tie): 'Home' - Good Neighbours: Wow, this reminds of the indie folk acts that weren't even good enough to get another single or develop a fanbase. It's like splitting the difference between Glass Animals and The Walters, and the whistling makes this worse. Hope, this doesn't catch on.
DM (Tie): 'Selfish' - Justin Timberlake: While I don't think this is worse than 'Home', this was a real disappointment. The 'Jealous' by Nick Jonas comparison is apt, but at least that song had some sort of pulse. This is limp and uninteresting in a late Maroon 5 kind of way. Guess that's what happens when you don't get Timbaland or the Neptunes on production :/
Also, Conner Smith put out a song with Caitlyn Smith if you're curious ;)

And with Hiss debuting at #1, Megan becomes the FIRST ever independent BLACK female artist, as well the first independent Black artist and independent female artist in general to EVER debut at #1 on Billboard! Her achieving this feat and coming out on top at the end not only during Black History Month, but especially after everything she's gone through, from losing both her parents, to getting popped by Tory, to industry vets like Drake and Nicki Minaj turning their backs on her and mocking her trauma, is honestly ICON behavior! She deserves this to the fullest extent! I'm so beyond proud of her!
And the cherry on top is that this happened the same week that Tom MacDonald called himself the biggest independent rapper.

This has certainly been an eventful week. Megan stays winning, Nicki continues to spiral down, Justin Timberlake's weak ass comeback single, that hilariously bad Tommy Mickey D song that only got to where it is because he begged Ben Shapiro for help, and don't even get me started on the Grammys. Happy Black History Month.

I love how Tom MacDonald goes _What would Ben do?_ in _Facts_ - how can you think of yourself as a free thinker speaking truth to power while confessing to an obsession with Ben Shapiro that you yourself put in religious territory? Not to mention how pathetic it comes off to kiss the ass of the guy you're collaborating with in such an epic fashion. Obviously, this isn't sticking around; seems taylor-made to be 2024's Am I The Only One - a song few people will even remember.

It's also amazing how we've been getting these songs almost every year, which feels like the Right is upset that Trump lost the 2020 election. Am I The Only One in 2021, we probably got something in 2022 but I can't think of one, Try That In A Small Town in 2023, and now this. Not even the Left got this upset to make songs about Trump winning in 2016, or if they did, they didn't chart. But I guess these songs did because there is somewhat of a comedic factor to them.

I don't know, to be honest - since these works of naked political provocation for the sake of it don't really tend to stick around, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some pretty bad examples from the late 2010s that I forgot about. The closest thing I can remember is people streaming WAP to piss off Ben Shapiro - that song, of course, being much more competent on a musical and lyrical level than any of these conservative anthems. I can think of a song that didn't chart from last year - _Cinderella Snapped_ by Jax - that might be the worst song I've ever heard.
I think the relative scarcity of songs like this on the liberal side (at most, you'll get controversies surrounding Cardi B or Lil Nas X that only really help the careers of those artists) is due to the fact that liberals tend to see themselves represented in mainstream culture to a much greater extent, and while more solidly left-wing acts are a relative rarity, what makes the right especially interested in these kinds of songs that just say _I'm a conservative! _*_*Insert ten tired partisan slogans in random order*_* is their disdain for much of mainstream music, particularly rap and hip-hop (an outrage that is somewhat racially charged for sure); there is a kind of anger in seeing stuff you hate get normalized. And profiteering hacks like Tom MacDonald will channel that frustration into having angry conservatives buy their songs and feel like they're making a difference, except there's a hard ceiling on how far this stuff can go on the charts because it's just not that well-made. Hell, even Try That In A Small Town didn't stick around that long even in spite of being at the forefront of the cultural conversation thanks to liberal backlash. And obviously, no one cares about Facts on a musical level - people are just buying it (as Ben Shapiro tells them to) to show they're on the right side of the culture war. I'm almost certain it'll fare worse than Try That In A Small Town and will be out of the top 20 by next week, in fact, or at least it won't if you don't get a lot of liberal outrage about it, which I hope no one on the liberal side is hacky enough to engage in; the ragebait here is so much more obvious than even in Try That In A Small Town.

Music-Related Trailer Thoughts: Back to Black
Hey, I brought up that movie last week. Let's see if what I said holds up. Just like most artists who gets a biopic, I'm not that familiar with Amy Whinehouse. I know the song the movie is named after, and I know the song she's best known for, and that's it. I do like those two songs a lot. I even had thoughts about listening to the album they came from. As for this movie, it looks promising. That's it. The fact it's made by an indie studio makes me more excited than if it was made by a big studio. Actually, does Focus Features count as an indie studio at this point? Shoutout to the fact it called itself "Back to Black" instead of "Rehab." Rehab may be the only song from her people remember, but Back to Black is the better song.
Yeah, I'm aware that as far as recent trailers goes, more people are talking about stuff like Despicable Me and Megamind. As far trailers for fourth entries in a series that used Sweet Child O' Mine in them goes, Despicable Me 4 already looks better than Thor: Love and Thunder.

I get why there's so much of a stigma around people complaining about rap songs not being lyrical, mainly due to people like Tom McDonald(he complains about this in the chorus of his song), but does anyone else think that the fact that Hiss is the only rap song to chart on the hot RnB/Hip Hop top 50 this year that's not about a relationship or having a lot of money is proof that this backlash has gone way too far? Seriously, this feels like a massive overcorrection. And the bragging would be pretty awesome if it was over loud, intense sounding beats or if these songs tried to have clever or interesting lines. But they really don't.

I'm saying that people have taken their backlash toward pretentious people who think that they're superior to everyone else because they either make "lyrical miracle" type raps or are fans of it and hate mumble rap too far to the extent that every single non lyrical, generic trap rap song that happens to be on the radio gets massive amounts of praise because it's socially unacceptable to ask for anything better because your associated with people like Tom McDonald if you do.

Facts is the best pop rap song in years. It's nowhere near even my current favorite songs, but that is just how far pop rap has fallen.
While I am by no means surprised to see Facts get WORST OF THE WEEK, I'd have thought Mark would've been more appreciative of other autistic people making it in the music industry.

@@juhaniaho6698 My comment was meant to be kind of tongue in cheek, but I do think there's a reasonable case to be made that Ben Shapiro is autistic. His odd speech pattern, literal mindedness and rigid thinking all seem to indicate that. I'm far from the first one who's thought this. Andrew Schultz notably made a joke about Ben being autistic on Joe Rogan's podcast, and there are a number of reddit and quora threads on the topic.
