I knew right from the jump that mark wouldn’t like this song cuz he’s a soy boy that simps over Megan
As the resident Tinashe superfan, "Nasty" is... pretty good. She's got much better stuff in this vein ("Needs" from BB/ANG3L, the second half of "Cash Race" from Songs for You, "I Can See the Future" from 333), but glad to see people are getting on board.
Shame Mark wasn't the biggest fan of 'Nasty', but glad to see him a good review for 'The Door'! Much better than 'Lose Control' imo and I really wouldn't mind this becoming another hit for Teddy Swims.

hoping that both red wine supernova and HOT TO GO both get their chance at real chart success - if not, i might just make exceptions for both on my best hits list.
Two highlights for me this episode:
1. Tinashe's back on the Hot 100!!! She was one of my favorite artists back in high school, and it's so nice to see her here after so many years. Until Mark pointed out that she last appeared on the chart eight years ago, I forgot she was on that Britney Spears song.
2. I jumped out of my couch when I saw 'Hot to Go!' as one of the debuts for this week. I've heard this song before. It was covered by this independent girl group, PMX, around Halloween. I might have to check out the original again, along with 'Red Wine Supernova'.

‘Please Please Please’ is currently predicted to be around 2% in performance behind #1. Given its streaming momentum, this could become Sabrina’s first Hot 100 leader next week. Even if I personally prefer ‘Espresso’, I definitely wouldn’t complain if it does! 😊

People usually joke about Todd’s predictions throughout the years, but there are some really good ones in hindsight. One of my favorites was when he talked about Rihanna kept on releasing a crap ton of records from the start of her career all the way up to 2012 when he put one of her songs on the worst list. Since then she’s only released one album since, and hasn’t really done anything music wise since 2017.
Nice to see Chappell Roan charting.

1) Since Post Malone and Morgan Wallen's "I Had Some Help" was #1 for the fourth week in a row, Post Malone surpassed Jack Harlow as the artist with the most weeks at #1 this year. That's good. "Lovin on Me" is a pretty *bad* song after all!
2) Speaking of "I Had Some Help", I wouldn't be surprised if Eminem's "Houdini" or Sabrina Carpenter's newest single took its #1 spot by next week. Both songs have much stronger momentum at the moment.
3) "Redrum" lasted 20 weeks. Considering that the song faded into the background pretty fast, even *before* Drake and Kendrick Lamar's beef, it's impressive how it lasted that long! I wonder what its inevitable Year-End Hot 100 spot will be. 🤔
4) Teddy Swims finally managed to get a second hit. It's currently a minor hit but you never know. It could possibly have a good run if he plays his cards right. We'll just have to wait and see!
5) It's nice to see Chappel Roan's "Red Wave Supernova" finally chart on the Billboard Hot 100. It could also possibly have a good run. I hope it has a good run. The AI DJ introduced it to me *forever* ago! 🤓
I'm really glad The Door is finally hitting the charts. I've been hearing it on the radio for weeks and I like it so much more than I ever liked Lose Control.

Music-Related Movie Trailer Thoughts: Piece by Piece
Yeah, I remember talking about how I was looking forward to this. Let's see the result. Don't think I talked about this before, but I'm a big Lego collector in real life. I love the Lego movies in particular. The first one is my favorite animated film of all time. So this movie was already gonna be on my radar considering it focuses on two of my ten favorite things. Even if I know nothing about Pharrell Williams outside of songs he had a feature credit on and the Despicable Me songs. In all fairness, I think so does everyone else. Oh, and the fact that Focus Features was attached to it was intriguing. This is gonna be a lot of people's first Focus Features movie you know. Or indie movie in general.
As for the actual trailer for this movie that'll mostly be known for giving us Lego Kendrick Lamar and Lego Snoop Dogg, I expected this to be a normal biopic that just so happened to look like Lego. But no, they decide to have visual gags and creative moments with that concept. It's an animated film that takes advantage of the idea that it's animated. I'm impressed. This is unironically one of the better trailers I talked about. Hopefully my town's two screen theater shows it. Forget Joker 2, this is the music-related movie of October 2024 I'm looking forward to most. And it figures that we also got a Wild Robot trailer today. Because with those two, fall is gonna be a good time for animated films that get advertised on TV.

Why is Chappell Roan suddenly charting new songs all the time? Or at least on the Spotify Charts? Never heard of her till this year
She’s getting more streams cause of pride month im sure, the gays are very fond of her, as they should be tho
tbh I think it's just the normal ascent of a new pop artist lol. I first heard about her maybe 6ish months ago? She released an album last year that didn't chart at all, so she's just now starting to see some charting success.
She supported Olivia Rodrigo, because they have the same producer, she even sung backing vocals on her hunger games song as well as couple of album tracks. She has insane stage presence, amazing vocals and just really memorable moments during her set. The first notable moment was when during Casual many kids put up their flashlights up. Sonically it’s a more melancholic song, even though the songs is very clearly about lesbian sex.
That was followed by her Coachella performance, which was streamed youtube, where other songs on the setlist started gaining attention. Good luck babe for example was released just a week or two before Coachella.
I can talk about it for days, but to sum up; her rise can be attributed to her having an insanely clear vision of what she’s doing and how she’s presenting it live. It is really apparent that she is a well seasoned songwriter and perfomer, after working in the music industry for 10 plus years.
I also put this on the TikTok & UMG feud that went down for a while. It helped newer artists get traction even without TikTok
I'm going to make the bubbling under post its own comment as I will say that the results from this week are as expected, with no surprise to the best and worst of the week, even if I can see Eminem's "Houdini" sticking around for a while going into that concept album later in the summer. Next week will be very interesting, with Sabrina Carpenter attempting to debut at number 1 with her newest single and the small possibility of a Charli XCX 'Brat' impact (360 is the only one that might try to chart even though given Mark's review of the album that might not be beneficial when there were better songs there), alongside some other singles looking to rotate for the summer.

I just know that Mark is not going to be happy to see it back.🤣
I think The Boy Is Mine is the perfect single, it's made to be a hit. I'm hoping for True Story or Sueprnatural next.

Album Thoughts: LoveCop-Royal Republic
I didn't know what to expect going into this album because like I once said, while I did enjoy all the singles, I did noticed I liked each one somewhat less than the last. No matter what, oh, it's another one of those "only one song has an "E" under their name on Spotify" albums. This has been a theme with my albums. Luckily, it ended up being pretty good. While it was true that none of the songs quite ended up being on the same level as that first single, Electra is still a big highlight. It starts with a nice Jungle like sound, has great atmosphere during the verses, and a banger chorus. Sha-La-La-Lady is another good one. It's an enjoyable disco-esque closer. "Before I kissed your momma in a song" is a cheesy but kinda enjoyably silly lyric. Boots and Love Somebody are solid jams. One of erased the Maroon 5 song with the same name. Freakshow is alright, but it doesn't sound too great. What was with those guys chanting "motherfucker" during that one part anyways? The guys who went "good morning" got a chuckle from me though. I still kinda wish that song was a single because a music video would've been kickass. Despite one kinda underwhelming song, good album overall. Than after I listened to that album, I watched Godzilla Minus One, so I had a good day.
One last thing, remember how I once said that My House's music video had a sweet jazz opening I liked. Well, on the album, that opening is a seprate song. Why? Just make it part of that song.

That’s what Beyonce has been doing for a while, since Self titled to be precise. She just kinda releases music, maybe does a performance or two but not much more than that. Renaissance, like Cowboy Carter received little promotion after release and she let her fans take it from there. When Cuff it got popular on tik tok she released a remix and paid for radio play, but nothing more than that. I suppose it will be similar if Bodyguard or Tyrant or something else get popular.
My Opinion of this weeks new arrivals:
WOTW1: Let Your Boys Be Country- After they you know "Try That In a Small Town", I don't care about Jason Aldein.
WOTW2: Houdini- It pains me to give Em this title, but man outside of the awesome music video, I am not gonna go back to this and the Shooting the feet joke, Really, Em? Yeah, I don't care about this.
HM: Nasty- Soild banger, It's Ok
BOTW1: The Door- This is a very catchy song.
BOTW2: Both Chappell Roan Songs- She's deserves this groth in popularity

Honestly, Mark FINALLY liking a Sabrina Carpenter song would be the cherry on top of what's already been a wild-ass year for music for me.
I completely disagree with Mark on Houdini, I thought it was a great track. I thought the hook was very catchy, I liked the sample as well. I thought most of the lines were funny: some of them didn’t land but most were fine. I never saw the Megan the Stallion line as a diss: I think he was just asking if she would like to collaborate with him: he just did it in a way that caused controversy.
Overall I think Houdini achieved what it set out to do: to bring back Slim Shady but in a modern setting. I absolutely don’t agree with Mark saying it’s the worst of the week at all (though I also don’t agree with the narrative that Eminem hasn’t made a good album or good music since 2013), I’m also interested to see how it’s going to fit into the narrative of his upcoming album called the death of Slim Shady

Weirdly, even as someone who doesn't care for Chappell's campy side (and has mixed feelings on the album as a whole), I actually like "Hot To Go" more than "Red Wine Supernova"? Mostly because it's not overbearing with the innuendo and because there's an earnest lovestruck side to it that balances out the cheese. Imo Chappell is at her best when there's sincere emotion under all the glitter and horniness.
Thank you! As much as I'm excited for her breakthrough, the music she's made doesn't do much for me, hate to say it. Admittedly, I only listened to those first two songs from her album (including RWS), but it just sounds like your run-of-the-mill synth pop with some bad camp thrown on top. And this is coming from someone who is very queer! 💫

The only thing i can say about it is that its hilarious that superfans (or stans, but when discussing em, theres only one true version of stans), always get offended when their god or goddess is spoken down on even in the slightest.

When I first heard Houdini, I immediately got the satire and irony. That he was showing why Slim Shady doesn't work anymore.

It's mostly because of the roller coaster of quality known as the vocals where at some points, Tommy sounds fine, and others where he sounds yuck. Also props to him for FINALLY knocking Megan down a peg, yes using the shooting as a diss wasn't an apt choice but I think it worked well. Plus the music video is pure delightful nostalgia which accompanies the song really well!
Considering how insufferably ass the charts have been lately, this was a MUCH-NEEDED boost. Best Of The Week in my opinion, hope it gets to dethrone Post next week, and I'm BEYOND excited for the album!

Critics hate Houdini for stupid reasons. They don't like that he pokes fun of wokeness-even though Slim Shady should make fun of everything left, right and center.
Some idiot even said Eminem made "Abracadabra", an all time classic rock song, "sound even more like circus music." What the hell? It's that kind of one liner dismissal of both songs at once, which betrays an astonishing ignorance of classic rock and Eminem's back catalog, that makes it impossible to view such "reviewers" as anything other than ridiculous.
Anthony Fantano, in particular, was transparently perturbed and seemingly unable to tolerate any joke at causes he (and Eminem!) agree with: he poorly hid his bias and censorious impulse by essentially suggesting it would be more daring and risky for Eminem to attack something right wing. (Which Fantano would, conveniently. agree with more.)
Fantano and other critics absolutely do not understand the majority of Eminem's fan base. We don't care if he makes fun of Trump, or Clinton, or uses the "gay" word. We respect his freedom of speech to take a stand against Bush or Trump. Agree or disagree. We also understand that Slim Shady is parody, and don't take his insane depravity seriously. We laugh and move on. Shady is a mirror on the dark aspects of America, it's vices and impulses, delivered with subtext and humor. Which is not to say that every Eminem song has to be super deep, either. Sometimes a joke is just a joke.
If you don't like the style of "Houdini" I have to kind of wonder if you are, or ever were, REALLY an Eminem fan. Like saying you don't like Michael Jackson's horror themed pop because it's "silly". Its POSSIBLE, but.. THAT'S WHAT THEY DO! (Thriller is a great example, because it is a horror song on the surface, but the subtext is much deeper.) It is worth noting that ALL of Eminem's studio albums* up to 2009-including his three undisputed classics- have a comedic lead single in the same vein as Houdini, and the comedic lead single is generally not indicative of the content on the albums they spawned from, for whatever these facts are worth.
Houdini is, for me, Eminem's best comedic lead single since Without Me. It's better than Just Lose It, better than We Made You. To me, it's classic Shady. It sounds like he could've made it in 2003. Except for modern topics like the transgender cat line. (Which I would say is brilliant, if you understand it*-but tastes can differ.) I love how unapologetically nostalgic and FUN it is! I'm here for jokes. I know when not to take Eminem seriously, and it doesn't hurt me to laugh at myself.
And, for the record, initial sales (as of June 11th, 2024) indicate Houdini is a massive commercial success, and the public largely agrees with my assessment. It peaked at number 1 in the UK and Canada (and South Africa, for all those detractors who claim black people don’t listen to Eminem) this week and reached the top ten in the music markets all over the globe becoming the most successful song in the entire world for it's first week of release. Altogether, it sold about half a million copies globally. It achieved this monumental feat despite largely being ignored by radio stations everywhere. Quite the accomplishment for an artist over 50 years old and decades in to an already phenomenally successful career.
In short. WE, the public, have voted-Houdini is great!!! The critics never liked Eminem, anyway.
