One thing I respect about Billie is how she isn’t afraid to take risks and experiment with her sound. Glad that Mark liked the album, although I’m a bit surprised ‘CHIHIRO’ was his least favourite track. ‘LUNCH’ is definitely going to become a big pride anthem and well done to Billie on her highest debut to date! 🏳‍🌈

@@piran1807My least favorite is "BITTERSUITE." I don't think it's bad at all, it's just the only song on the album that doesn't get stuck in my head.

CHIHIRO was honestly my least favorite song on HIT ME HARD AND SOFT too. Though I'd still say it's some level of good.
LUNCH I notice seems like a song that should best be listened to every now and then. It might get old quickly if you constantly listen to in a short span of time, but the times you listen to it have gaps with each other, it'll probably stay very good. But hey, that's just me.

‘Good Luck, Babe!’ reaching a new peak despite a decent-sized album bomb is a very promising sign. Hopefully it can enter the Top 40 next week and eventually secure a Year-End spot! 😊

I love that song so much ... probably one of my most listened songs of the past few weeks. I'm not even a queer person myself, but something about her incredibly pointed frustration at a partner constantly caught up in shame and self-loathing really speaks to me. Not to mention that it sounds fucking amazing and really highlights Chappell's versatility as a vocal performer.

@@piran1807 I totally get that. Man, do I have a lot of songs contending for my personal favorite hit song of the year - Euphoria, Good Luck, Babe, A Bar Song, ... I could go on and on. Following the charts has been a real joy these past few weeks in my opinion, and there are so few terrible songs that I seriously doubt it'll be worth it to make a personal worst list. Like, there are only so many times that I can say that the radio is hilariously out of touch and plays the most whitebread 4/10 stuff imaginable, or that it's disgusting that people briefly uplifted Kanye West at this late date. I can literally count the number of hit songs I found genuinely enraging this year on one hand, so would it even be interesting to read something like that?

It’s kind of ironic that ‘Cruel Summer’ went recurrent the week before the Songs Of The Summer tracking for 2024 begins. I was so thrilled when this got released as a late single thanks to the tour, but the fact it spent over a year in the chart and it’s not even from this decade is incredible!

      I loved this Billie album!
"BIRDS" has such an infectiously warm, comforting energy to it. It feels like a modernized twist on 80s jangle pop. I can't get enough.
"CHIHIRO" is so beautiful. Finneas's amazing production shines here. I'm especially obsessed with the driving synth passages near the end.
The second half of "L'AMOUR" is the only part of the album I staunchly dislike. Sonically, it sticks out like a sore thumb, with a synth lead almost identical to that of The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights," and ugly vocal processing that comes off like a bad Charli XCX impression. The first half of the song is fine though!
I'd never heard of Koe Wetzel until "Sweet Dreams" popped up on the Spotify charts, and I'm thoroughly unimpressed. The song is painfully tepid and the vocal performance is frustratingly passionless.

BOTW: Ain't No Love in Oklahoma - This song is freaking badass, and it makes me wonder how many songs from the Twisters album will chart. The song by Bailey Zimmerman was just released, but we'll have to wait and see if it charts. Oh, and Benson Boone is on the album for some reason.
HM: Lunch - This is just catchy as hell. I'm not gay, but I'm glad to know this has an audience that will love it. Also, congrats to Billie Eilish for her highest charting debut to date.
DM: Bittersuite - The synths in that song are way too grating for me to like. I tried to like it, but I couldn't, and I'm sorry.

This week was reasonably good and even the tracks that I don't like are just not for me. Given that next week, we might not get much impact from any of the big album releases, like Twenty-One Pilots or Sexyy Red, it might give more opportunities for many songs in the Bubbling Under to cross over especially since the chart just recovered from Gunna's falloff.

Wonderful list! I cosign like 90 % of these picks. In particular, Like That, Euphoria, Good Luck, Babe, A Bar Song, and Where The Wild Things Are are all solid contenders for my favorite hit song of the year. My list (sticking to a top ten for now) might look something like this:
      10. “White Horse” by Chris Stapleton
      9. “Yeah Glo!” by GloRilla
      8. “Burn It Down” by Parker McCollum
      7. “Wildflowers And Wild Horses” by Lainey Wilson (which may well miss the year-end ... how sad.)
      6. “Beautiful Things” by Benson Boone (if this continues to grow on me as much as it has thus far, it might snatch an even higher spot at the end of the year.)
      5. “Like That” by Future and Metro Boomin ft. Kendrick Lamar
      4. “Where The Wild Things Are” by Luke Combs
      3. “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan
      2. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey
      1. “Euphoria” by Kendrick Lamar
Some songs that I'm considering if they had/have enough longevity - and they would/will be contenders for the top spot in that event:
      “Pink Skies” by Zach Bryan
“Slow It Down” by Benson Boone
      “Austin” by Dasha
“So High School” by Taylor Swift (I legitimately love this song ... sorry.)
A lot of Future and Metro Boomin's collab albums, but “Cinderella” with Travis Scott, which came closest to having some degree of longevity, and “Always Be My Fault” with The Weeknd, which didn't even touch the Hot 100 but is my personal favorite out of both projects, in particular.
Honorable mentions (and this is a really strong HM section) go out to “Houdini” by Dua Lipa, “redrum” by 21 Savage, “Type Shit” by Future & Metro Boomin ft. Travis Scott and Playboi Carti, “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, “Agora Hills” by Doja Cat, “Lil Boo Thang” by Paul Russell, “Get It Sexyy” by Sexyy Red, “MONACO” by Bad Bunny, “World On Fire” by Nate Smith, and “Too Sweet” by Hozier.

I'm curious in Twisters, but I'm a disappointed that it's only a loose sequel and not one that brings back the characters of the original one. Bill and Dusty couldn't be there for unfortunate reasons, but it would make more sense to have the current storm chasers as their kids, and have Jo pop up often (kind of keeping with how the original one treated the group of storm chasers as family)
Twister is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I feel like this is just a me thing.

    1) "I Had Some Help" retaining its #1 spot wasn't surprising. Despite his many controversies, Morgan Wallen still has a ton of traction. Post Malone made the right choice by collaborating with him, even if the song itself isn't great! 😅
    2) "Cruel Summer" is about to end its run on the Billboard Hot 100 after *54* weeks! It lasted one week longer than 2022's "Anti-Hero", which lasted 53 weeks. 🤓
    3) I wonder how long Billie Eilish's latest songs will last on the Billboard Hot 100. The unofficial start to summer was just three days ago. Even if "Lunch" hadn't opened in the Top 5, it would've still been the song that had the best chance to compete in the annual Song of the Summer "competition". It helps that Pride Month is about to start in *two* days from now! 🤔🏳️‍🌈

Music-Related Movie Trailer Thoughts: Moana 2
Moana is a very good movie, but like Joker, it was clearly meant to be one movie. I remember around the time Frozen 2 came out, I told a friend of mine I heard a rumor they were making a Moana 2, and their response was "that movie literally ended." Guess I'll talk that fact now. It's been confirmed that this movie is just a reworked version of a Moana show they were working on. If this movie ends up not being well-liked, prepare for that fact to be something that everybody knows like how SpongeBob was supposed to end after the first movie. My expectations were already not high, but that fact just lowered them even more. I should add that I don't love Ralph Breaks the Internet, and I don't love Frozen 2. So I wouldn't be surprised if I don't love this. As someone who considers Zootopia one of their favorite films, not a furry, I'm pretty worried the sequel coming out next year will go down that path.
Now onto the trailer. For something that was originally supposed to be a show, the animation is amazing. It's the usual theatrical Disney quality. Then again, Zootopia+ also had movie quality animation, so maybe this was always supposed to look like this. Outside of that, they didn't show enough of this movie to get a good judge over whether or not it looks like it'll be good. It's a teaser trailer that's actually a teaser trailer. Are they still making that live-action remake? That makes that news make even less sense. Why remake a movie two years after a sequel to it came out?
Anyways, see you next week when I make that meme comment I've been teasing all year. Til then, my biggest movie thought will be "why have I been getting so many videos of people's DVD collection in my recommended lately?"

@justezek8596 Yeah. Working with Drake right now isn't smart. I mean it'll get her to chart with the big name, but still

Ok, so we have yet another song with "Wildflower" on the chart right now, along with news of Money Trees getting a resurgence even if it has yet to happen on the charts, and Saturn, a space song if you will, is in it too. Just let the actual Beach House chart you cowards.
Billie, I love ya, and that song is one of the best songs on your album, but you can't top the original.

@@jeremyusreevu237 That song is indeed damn good. And like I once said before, I already wrote a big review for it that I'm gonna wait to post until it actually charts even if I spoiled the big part of it. Maybe I'll post it anyways considering that the chances of that song charting is like the "I'm ready" scene from Patty Hype. For now, I already have two big comments planned during the next two weeks.

Sometimes, I wonder why Mark bothers reviewing big apbums if it will be fully on Billboard BREAKDOWN a week later.

    • @piran1807
      @piran1807 2 місяці тому +3

I guess it's because the album reviews are to focus more on the overall concept, while Billboard BREAKDOWN gets into more detail about the individual tracks, so the commentary is a bit different. Also, I imagine there are some people who follow either channel but not both.

Interesting list. I can only really make a top 5, personally ... not a whole lot of stuff I hate thus far.
      5. “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” by Tommy Richman (not even a song I hate all that much - in fact, I'd go so far as to say I respect it as an experiment. An experiment that ended up a catastrophic failure, but an experiment nonetheless.)
      4. “yes, and?” by Ariana Grande
      3. “Everybody” by Nicki Minaj ft. Lil Uzi Vert
      2. “greedy” by Tate McRae (which is really this high out of disappointment - I probably could've lumped this in with the Lose Controls and We Can't Be Friends's of the world as mediocre-to-bad radio filler if it weren't made by the same artist who made some of my favorite hit songs of the decade.)
      1. “Carnival” by Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign (which I have yet to listen to and don't need to to make this judgment; nothing outside of a political song that's somehow even more reprehensible is gonna top platforming a literal fascist doubling down on his abhorrent ideology. It's even soured my opinion of collaborators like Playboy Carti, Travis Scott, and especially Lil Durk.)

Im confused how you think that they sound any similar. Fancy Like is very boring and I jsut hate his voice. Bar Song (Tipsy) is not similar at all and is very fun. also his voice really works for the song. I dont think you have ears and is looking for a bad coutnry song to compare it too even though they arent similar at all.
