The main problem with these kind of things is the resistance on getting started.. So if a mac in envolved, you most likely not fill the note because of the friction….
Great review, I think that Apple should include a search functionality; I feel as though the filter option isn’t quite enough. Also, there is no area to recover accidentally deleted journal entries. Of course, it’s a new application that Apple have brought out, so I think that we will see these functionalities in due time.
I also want to take a moment to appreciate how Journal looks and feels. It’s very smooth and easy to navigate. The photos are laid out at the top and the text is at the bottom, you can add as many photos as you want and expand the Journal entry to view them all.
I think they will!
I’ve never journaled before, so I’m interested to try this and see if it helps to organize the way I organize my days.

Is there any way to transfer any previous journaling I’ve done on the notes to the new journals app ?
Is the media independently stored from the library? I don’t do iCloud Photo Library and I’m regularly dumping my camera roll out. I know a lot of machine learning features rely on iCloud Photo Library so I wonder if this app will be of any use for me. I currently pay for Day One and I really like it but I feel like a native app would have more potential
good review andrew. I journal everyday for quite a few years. it is very surprising how frequently I have to search for something or information. I have been anxiously been waiting for this app to be available and it looks great from your initial review. I am curious if you will be able to import a journal from a different app? the Apple journal looks a bit more complex that what I have been using. thank you for your review…keep ‘em coming
So far, no imports. I was wondering that, too. It’s bare at the moment but hoping for a few more features soon.
Do you know if will be possible clean the local storage of the Journal, but keep the files on cloud?
Great review. I’ve been journaling for a few years now, so if I can’t import my past years from another app I’ll have to give it a pass and that’s why Day One and the rest are not worrying.
I agree. I had high hopes for the app, to the point where I even upgraded to the 17.2 beta so I could install it. But as you say, if I can't import from other apps, it's really no better than a bare-bones text editor.

What about templates and formatting of text, is Markdown supported? Hwo does it compare to Day One?
It looks really interesting for things that happen to me during my life that were really meaningful to me! Great app!
Can you export everything into pdf, like for example to make a hard copy in the future.

I’m now using it in my iPhone, it’s really easy to use and I really like but. But why it doesn’t available in iPad ? I also hope this journal can have the search function.
this is the best update on ios17 so far. i love that app so much. it motivates me to write something and it suggests me photos and everything, less work for great memories.
now i do really need this app so bad!!!

What the difference from the notes app
I came to see if you could edit the date of the entry cause I accidentally started journaling a week ago (it was a list of notes I dated that turned into a journal log) and I am very happy to see that it’s an option so I can easily copy my notes into the journal app.
I do wanna know one very important thing that may be obvious but will obviously need to be there for me to use the new app. Does it have a recently deleted section in case I accidentally delete an entry? I’m sure it should but I’d like to know for sure or bring this to someone’s attention who’s beta testing ios 17.2 to suggest to apple if it is in fact missing. Thanks for the vid.

I got a question does this integrate with the state of mind as well? Could you put your state of mind data into your journaling?

@@Praveen-or5ce I’m thinking that they are gradually introducing more features and it might be one on the official release
@@Praveen-or5ce because I can’t see why they wouldn’t since they have journaling suggestions and the state of mind has to do with your feelings and logging them through the day so I would love to use that information to expand on the context that I added when I logged my mood and feelings
@@Praveen-or5ce so can you and everyone on the beta give apple that feedback for me because I’m sure that I’m not the only one who thinks this is one of the most important journal suggestions for them to add
It seems somewhat under featured. Eg search feature will become necessary in the future. Tagging so can link entries together. Uncovering previous reflections to review to remind self of past events.
I've used Pages as a diary since 2021, and love that Apple have built a journal app in now... but whyyy isn't it on Mac?? I barely ever do diary entries in my phone, I much prefer typing on a proper keyboard. I'm gonna give Journal a go since I love using "the proper thing to do things" but I really hope they port it to Mac soon...
This looks like a great app! I currently use Day One which I really like. It seems like in this early phase I won’t use it simply because I already get a lot of use out of the tools my current journal has. I need something that is does either differently or in addition to for me to switch. So I’ll keep an eye out for now, but I’ll stick to my current journal app. 👍🏽

True, but I’m paying for the features which Apple isn’t yet providing. For now, I’m ok with that. You get what you pay for.
I would love to have the possibility to share entries with others. And these should be able to comment entries. Also workout data could be added such as the track you went on and the exercise summary. Or also some basic weather data for that day.
A bit out of topic but have you guys seen a change in AirPods Pro 2 volume levels after the 17.1 update?
Is this similar to the day one app? I’m gonna continue using day one app until Apple matches their features. It looks good so far.
It’s not syncing with my devices I have a couple of iPhones and info is not syncing 😢
Agree with some other comments, a nice start, but I want multiple journals, I need to keep a journal for work so this digital version would be great, but I don’t want that to get mixed up with a life journal or holiday journal
I agree! Is not very organized. The functionality is limited. I need to categorize into different folders, organize by year, topics, etc.
Can you use hashtags for retrieval afterwards of similar journal entries regarding the same theme?
I haveit on my iPhone with beta, no multiple journals, no search, no hash tags, no location, no music you were listening to.
Hopefully it improves- right now it's add some photos, type some text, can also add a voice entry
The app is a little too bare bones at the moment, but I’m hoping they pull in some basic formatting features from the Notes app.
I got it today it just appears
So you can only add 13 pieces of media.. 12 if you include a location. I wish it allowed to add other locations then one only. Also I’ve noticed that I don’t see a “Headline” like they show in the pics in the App Store. Am I missing something?
How did you get 17.2? i've been waiting to dive into this app since they announced it.
I like the idea of this. I have it installed now with the Beta release, and it says it'll start delivering suggestion prompts depending on what task I'm doing on my phone. Other than opening the Journal app and reviewing the prompts loaded there, I haven't received any while not in the app. Also, maybe it's just me, but it seems like they're missing the boat on incorporating Notes, Freeform, and now Journal into one seamless app with the varying functionality present depending on the use case for a particular task.
I agree with you. Why don’t they put all these 3 apps…Notes, Free Form, and Journal together into one app? Why do we have to switch to different apps? Is just not very functional and also very tedious and redundant when it could be in just one app.

Thanks for the review! Like others have commented below, I would love to see a search function but also an 'export as' or 'save/share to' function. Since it's not available on my MacBook Pro and I'd really love to be able to use a keyboard to make entries, I've looked into Day One (which has Search and Export as) but the reviews kinda scare me away 😬
i don't wanna try anything other than Apple's journal. but kinda curious what does the reviews say about Day One (ofcourse I ain't gonna use it, just curious)
I’ve been using Day One for almost a year now and like that I can journal on all my devices, create a photo book of my travels, create templates, etc. Apple will need to add these types of features as well in order for me to stop using Day One. Perhaps down the road it will add new features, but I can’t wait years for Apple to get its act together and be better than Day One.

I wanna use this but on iPhone it would be too cramped. I would prefer on iPadOS so I can use the Magic Keyboard or on my MacBook.
Needs to be able to import data from Calendar app as I want to build an autobiography from historical info

That would be interesting if Apple could give the option to export it as a book, if you or like what Apple does with Apple Music or Photos, where you get a slideshow or a look at what you’ve been doing throughout the year, if they could give an option for that to be exported into a book if you wanted too

Not at the moment. It really needs that as it is a pain using the phone to type.
How long until it's available to the public and not just beta users?
Likely arriving by the end of the year.
Might be useful if i could pick any day in the past and see what texts i got and sent and what I did, but im not gonna manually log all that in myself along with my personal thoughts, get a grip
When we add photos I hope it just references the existing photo than storing it as a separate copy.
The functionality is kinda limited what you can do. It needs to allow us to organize into different categories or folders like Notes. So is not very organized. Like organize into different topics, dates, year, etc.
Does journal multimedia use iCloud space?
It does. Though the size is minimal I have a few lengthy entries with text, photos etc and the size is 109 KB

I would like to see a way to archive all your entries into a playable or printable version, should the app itself be deprecated in the future, otherwise the purpose of a journal becomes a moot point.
It should be downloadable and not come as a stock app like they did with the Apple Music Classical app
I have a friend who hates it when they put new apps in the operating system by default
This seems like a half baked app for Apple. If you journal how are you going to search back and look at your entries? Do you have to scroll the entire time? Can you export your entries? Are they viewable on a Pc? Lots of issues

It’s cool but I wish it would do more. Apple has so much data they could port into this to make it even easier and fun to use. Of course users would need to consent but if the app would automatically import the pictures I took that day, where I went, music and podcasts I listened to, what workout I did etc. Hopefully that comes in the future, but pretty disappointing in my opinion. Makes you wonder why they even delayed it in the first place when it’s such a basic app.
I’m personally excited about the app because I use all of apples stock apps for simplicity but I do agree with you here in that I don’t understand why Apple delayed this when it looks very basic. Doesn’t make sense to me.

Please let me know how because I’ve used the app and it does not. All it does is suggest a reflection, which pins that reflection to the top that’s it. Then it’s a blank canvas. From there you can add a picture, memo, and location. So no it does not automatically show me the podcasts, or musics I listened to that day, or what type of workout I did. And in regards to location and pictures, you have to manually do it yourself. My statement was I want all that pre populated.
@@LJHeattles check out the original Apple showcase of the journal app. It might come in later betas, but usually in the recommended page there should be one that you can tap that has all the photos you took, what workout you did, what music you listened to, who you were with, where you were, podcasts and so on.
It would make more sense to come to iPad first.

You can do all that and more on the iPad with Voyage planner (by house of mars)

I’m disappointed that they didn’t include Search tool in or even Years and Months breaks.
i dont like apples journal app i hoped that it would be like day one.
Why would anyone want to spend time adding stuff to this app when other than looking at it on the screen there is no way to export it?! Lack of export or archive makes it junk! Would you take a load of photos that you could only view on your phone and couldnt get back out?!

I was just wondering, what happened with your child’s eye? It got me worried about him/her, if it’s private than its ok.
Little guy has glaucoma in his eye. Has required two surgeries so far to correct and has caused some vision loss in the one eye. But he's a trooper and is powering through.

There are better apps but it's free...plus will develop over time.
Until it’s on iPad I will not be using
For me, who doesn't like typing so much, it will be stressful to type for a long time on the iPhone. The journal app would have to be compatible with other devices such as the iPad. I am disappointed
no need to be disappointed. If you use Ipad or Mac, you can create new Journal entry/text on your Mac. Then use air drop copy and leave the text in Journal new entry. Thats what I do now when using other apps on Iphone. I just write text on my MAC or iPad and copy to iPhone when ready. do the same in Journal.
Good review but the app is very underwhelming. EXTREMELY basic functionality. Very disappointing especially considering all of the hype.
