I'm a prolific journal writer, I've kept a daily journal which I write in every single day for the last 9 years of my life. I was previously using OneNote for this, I had a 'notebook' for each year and tabs within each notebook for each month and pages within each tab for each day, and that's how I kept it organised, but I needed to manually add pictures and remember things I wanted to put in the journal. The Apple Journal app has finally made me move on from journaling in OneNote. It feels a lot more dynamic and the suggestions it makes for new journal entries using map pins for places you've been, pictures you took that day, activities you did recently, or just prompts for something to reflect on have all made me fall in love with journaling again, which I'll admit had started to feel like a chore with the way I was doing it previously. I really like what Apple did here! I don't know if this app will make people who don't already journal regularly start doing so, but for someone like me for whom journaling has already been a daily part of my life for almost a decade now I really appreciate it!
Did you ever try Day One?
Excellent comment. Thanks for sharing I’m going to give the journal a try when it’s released.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing .
You might want to try Day One.
@@buakbangbuathong1000 Requires subscription. It's ridiculous that my own entries getting locked behind if I don't pay a month of subscription. I had been using an app called Diarium, one time payment and cross platform too. Now Apple's Journal looks very promising and it would be free
Tip for those beginning to journal: only add entries for events you believe are worthy, or write down your thoughts/emotions on a topic. Frequent, but not everyday, entries will make journaling more enjoyable.
I have been journaling on and off in DayOne since 2015. It helps put perspective on my experiences. 🙂
do you have any nice introductory video on how to journaling? thank you!
Thanks for sharing the information.
i think only adding entries for events you believe are worthy is not enjoyable.
Sorry but I disagree with you… once you add worthiness as a criteria then you’re casting judgement on yourself every day. Maybe today was completely run of the mill, got up went to work, came home, watched TV, went to bed, there’ll still be some moment, an interaction with someone, an emotion, or something that is worthy of a journal entry. Not every day is a trip to Disneyland!
I do a mix of both. I find that fatigue builds if you try to get every moment of every day. Especially if you’re like me and your days are wild 😅. I also use Day One and I have templates for a regular day entry, a quick day entry, a week entry, and a month entry - for the months I just don’t get to it. Lot less pressure, and keeps it fun. Plus it’s fine if I skip some days. Also I make the templates have more details the longer it’s been, that way I’m motivated to not let it go too long. Hope those tips help!
I like the fact that you mentioned that the posts are for yourself, and you're wondering why it's important... I think the goal is not only to get access to your memory or your old activities or souvenirs... but journaling is important to STOP... and start thinking about you, your life, your situation, and your goals. It's so easy to being lost in Facebook or Twitter, watching meaningless videos over and over like a robot. It's important to stop, sometimes.
Totally agree, my friend! Very few of us give ourselves time to stop and take a step back from our lives.
The "no searching" part is a deal breaker for me. The main reason to have a digital journal is to be able to more easily find what I wrote.
Yeah that’s one thing that’s bugging me - what’s the point of doing this if I have to scroll back forever. I’ll stick to paper.
I think it will be upgraded soon and this function is likely to be added.
@@edmarkmaestrecampo3805 that would be a game changer then.
@@seaspeaktome9167 I guess apple plans to surprise you with "look back memories" feature similar to google photos
For me that’s more for my notes, I never look back at journal entries. But I do think it should still be added, it’s a feature that I’ve never seen omitted from a journaling app.
I definitely won't be using it until it's on Mac and iPad as well, so I can journal whenever, synced to the cloud. I also won't be using it until I can export the entries into an open standard file or folder for backup or printing.
The purpose of a journal isn't just to write down what you did, or what you think, but also to archive for future generations. Having it locked behind a proprietary software wall is antithetical to one of the main purposes of journaling.
Absolutely right.
Totally agree with you. I hate typing on phone and it would be way easier to use the app on Mac, maybe iPad too.
That’s a great point, I’ll also wait until it’s available on the iPad and iMac.
This is the first time I have seen a video with Bridget. I really enjoyed her. Super likable and engaging. Good job!
that phone case was on point
I honestly was impressed when they released it at WWDC but didn’t expect that I WOULD USE IT
I have never written a journal but I actually really enjoy it and like Bridget said, since I’m already on my phone at night, it makes sense for me to journal right before I go to bed and I do think it does help your perspective 🙏✨
I journal everyday, I write with a fountain pen using sepia ink and this app isn’t journaling.
When you physically write in a book instead of typing on a screen it’s a more holistic and meaningful experience and there’s something unique in writing in a book that technology just can’t do - it’s a connection between the physical and spiritual being.
Plus in the future when you eventually get rid of all your tech, what have you got - nothing, but if you have written and journaled in physical books you have tangible history to pass on to your family.
Less is always more and a single object like journaling in a book has no distractions and it’s better for your mental health and a way of escaping from tech and being more connected with the physical world, which we all need as humans.
My extensive journal entries (largely based upon responses to reading) are typed. Trying to handwrite them, I can’t keep up with my thoughts. The exception is when I’m composing poetry, which I occasionally do (not very prolifically, tho’).
Be that as it may, I would not use this journal app in any form.
I think that this would be great for making a journal about your holiday or ability to add photos, so on & so forth. Great review 😊
Great video, makes some important points I haven't seen in other reviews, like the inability to search.
I can kind of understand why Apple didn't give us the ability to share stuff from the journal app.. Journals are generally intended to be private. Still, though, the multi-media journal entries you can create with it are sometimes going to be things you'd want to share, but can't.
Anyway, thanks for the thought and time you put into make this video review. It was really helpful.
Thanks for updating us on the journal app. I didn't know what it was for. I don't think I'll use anything that will lock me into a specific phone brand. But it's nice to keep up to date on these things
I think it’s good at the start. I’d love to save a template soon. Hopefully they build a connection to the Health app mental health logging. “You said you were feeling unpleasant today. Write about the good things that happened recently.” It’s not bad for a version 1 as long as they don’t quit here.
As someone with
Long Covid, the Health addition would be great. Also food logging, resting/napping - but in a ‘my brain can’t think’ very easy format
Thanks for the quicky pictures of your beautiful family I was wondering what you family look like ~ Wishing you and yours the best for the New Year ~
Unimpressed but hopefully they will improve. I’ve been using DayOne for a while for journaling and love it. You can create separate journals and have a ton of flexibility. I use separate journals and since Apple only has one main journal it’s not something I’m going to use now. I’m hoping they add this in the near future. If so I’ll dump my day one and transition over.
It’s a battle versus other apps like Facebook memories…. It’s a good play to keep you engaged.
Wonder if they plan to bring search down the road. That seems to be a major omission. I also wonder how much it deviates from Day One.
I’ve been waiting for the journal app, one aspect I wished they would have though about was the sharing between devices on a same icloud account. Because sometimes im just not on my phone but rather on my mac so maybe to hit me with nostalgia there would be good 😅
Day one has been the best journal app ever. I’ve been an avid journal user for over 15 years.
Agree. Journal is copying and enhancing Day One, the plus of course Apple has the ecosystem to integrate all of the data (esp health data). Honestly, it’s a major plus point
I also afraid that gradually Day One cannot compete with this and stop their services. I have been using Day One since forever and I have sooo many content in the app.
Thanks Bridge for the video, and for letting me know in advance not to bother with another consuming commodity we hardly have nowadays, TIME. Perhaps when I retire, but after I clear the overloaded cupboards, read all the books, I once bought as MUST READ, etc etc Thanks again ❤
I loved the app by far. But m kinda looking for a folder structure. You know seperate journals for other aspect of our life! That would be phenomenal!
At the end, the new Journal App is like a social media profile, but you are both the writer and the reader. Pretty much like in most other social media.
it would be great the possibility to share, with no ads, no crazy algorithms or seek for likes or attention. Because i think we can all agree that Instagram its all of this, the social media experience is not the same anymore. Not good.
A social media profile about ME, just for ME, for which I am the sole audience. ME!
One point that we must emphasis to is the fact that your journal IS NOT SYNCHRONIZED WITH YOUR ICLOUD account (yet). So if you delete the app, you'll delete all it's content. Forever. Just be aware of that. It happens to me...
Please let us know when Apple adds search and calendar view to their new Journal app. Until then I’ll continue to use Day One. I search my old entries a lot.
I can’t wait to get this on iPad so I can have my journal anywhere or view it in a larger format and having it easier to enter things by way of keyboard.
I wish they could at least sort the entries by date or have like a calendar view kinda like DayOne
Actually just make it like DayOne. Ever since it’s been subscription based, ive been wanting this to replace it as soon as possible lol
I do love using the app, sometime just even getting back on yesterday and write things that I didn’t took time the present day, or journaling on the current day when I can when I’m outside (it picks up every locations where I ate and stuffs)
But again .. I feel that every apple app are so restricted and cold .. Apple Music app is good but throw the same playlist and digging into it is not that easy when the app itself won’t suggest real good thing..
the journal app feels the same, yes you can throw me bunch of things … but they’re not that related or what can I write about my Burger King moment ..? Even the “mental features” that I use a lot through my day are not connected at all with the journal app … it’s clearly a “version 1” and it will get better over time for sure but it’s the same cold face expression when it comes to really helping you or topaze you with a warm hug …
Content that no one else will see? How refreshing, I'm SOLD! 😊
I journal everyday so I was looking forward to Apple’s Journal app…but now that I found out you cannot search!!! It is pretty amazing how many times I search for “when I did that or took that or ate there? I mean I reference more than I thought I would it has been a valuable tool for me…
I think I'm in the minority here. I actually like that you can't search for past entries. Makes it very similar to analog journals. Just my two cents.
@@GuerreroUrbano100same, and it makes it more private, so that if someone were to enter the journal, they cannot search up their own name and easily read what I’ve written about them
The reason I’ve never written a journal is I was afraid to write completely honestly, because I was scared of people finding it out someday. With this, that’s solved
No search is a no-go for me. Have to keep looking, thanks for the review though
I’d love to see integration with State of Mind, so when I add a feeling in that app, when I go into the Journal app, it might prompt me to go into more detail on why I feel a certain way. This would be amazing because the character limit on the state of mind app is so limited. I haven’t counted but I think it’s around 50 characters, can’t really understand too much when you look back on it, with just 50 characters.
I believe the State of Mind section already has something kind of like that. When you go in to log your mood, it will give you some options to select from to describe why it is you’re feeling that way, and you can put a little note down too. I see what you’re saying that it would be cool if it was in the journal app so you can write a paragraph or something on why you feel that way.
4:36 it's puzzling why they don't utilize the space allocated for photos on the iPhone for the journal app as well. It appears to be duplicating photos, which seems inefficient.
Additionally, it would be beneficial if they allowed the inclusion of large videos through an iCloud link rather than restricting video uploads altogether.
They can't assume the photos won't be removed from device or deleted.
Day One has the same suggestions feature, and also a free version, but with a lot more features
This is like social media just for your own, which is great. I want to write stuff that perhaps I don't want to share publicly.
I think that is the traditional point, a private diary or journal is which complete honesty is possible. Otherwise it is blog, traditionally a newpaper column, or a letter written to a regular correspondent where you polish your persona.
I only watch those videos because of her energy and enthusiasm, she either likes her job or she paid well...
I'm new to iOS and have the latest update on my iPad but I can't find where this journal is 🤔 I've tried searching apps and on apple store. Is it not available yet to everyone?
I’ll preface this by saying that I’ve used Apple computers and devices since 1987, have upgraded my iPhone with every model since the original in 2007, and even worked at an Apple Store for one year. But I’m really not into the Journal app. Lately, my folder of “Apple apps”, from Journal, to Freeform, to Shortcuts, to Home, and on and on has gotten massive. I just don’t need to be doing EVERYTHING from my phone. Also, we have so many things that remind us of things, that I feel like it’s diminishing our ability to actually remember things with our own brains. Whether it’s a phone number, a birthday, or an appointment. I don’t think it’s healthy, and I pride myself with my memory. With Journal as well, I’d rather write in an actual journal. In recent years I was realizing how little I wrote things out by hand, and even more so how long it had been since I wrote in cursive. So I started doing it a whole lot more, and I found that I’ve really missed it. Writing something in your own hand is not only so much more personal and special, but it’s also a skill and an art. Just like making a painting. I also like that I have skills like knowing how to drive a manual transmission car. I don’t want to lose these skills. I even completely got off of social media a few years ago, and have never felt better. All that it did was make me feel bad about my own life, seeing everyone else’s narcissistic posts every 5 minutes, and waste a lot of time. But also, everyone who you know doesn’t need to have a wide open window of every single aspect of your life. It’s just unnecessary. Your casual acquaintance from 10 years ago doesn’t need to see a picture of your plate of pasta you had for dinner. I mean, come on. But back to the Journal, what if you wrote for years in that, and then one day Apple decided to discontinue that feature? Or if the digital information was deleted? Bam! All of your time and energy is gone. But you can always pull out a paper journal. Heck, maybe your handwriting improved or changed and it’s a nice memory. With Journal too, I’m sure it’s great if your life is all perfect, you have a great job, a spouse and kids, and see your family and friends all the time. But what if that isn’t the case? You sure don’t have much to write about, and trying to look back at your life is just depressing. So as I say, I’ve been a big fan of all that Apple does for over 35 years, and overall I still am. But not everything has to be consumed by technology, and we don’t have to be tethered and dependent on it 24/7.
Exactly the point.
You just know the Journal will throw up memories a year later so you can get reminders about what you did last year.
Oh wow i had Journal app in galaxy s1...so innovatvie apple🎉
اتمنى ان يضيفوا خاصية البحث والمجلد فقط
وسيصبح بالنسبة لي التطبيق المثالي للتدوين ❤
I assume they will, but I want it on iPad. My iPad mini is my go-to evening sketching and journaling device and would love the suggestions pulled from iPhone to show up on the larger device. (I have an iPhone 12 mini, so while I love that size I don’t necessarily want to write that much on it.)
I suspect a search function will come as a later update - it's a pretty obvious necessary feature
Day One is still vastly superior. It gives prompts, etc. AND it can be used on multiple platforms.
I’m not a type of person that writes a journal and probably won’t use it.
What I was thinking is how well will it work if you like a little more privacy on your phone? For example keeping Significant Location turned off and photo location off. It’s probably not going to do you much good. You have to give up more of your privacy.
you know it is my first time to see ur channel but really really you are soo funny or in anther word (you are fr*ken funny) plus ur emotains and ur face poses are really cute and make the video more fun and the look of hosts and tv shows is really funtectic
I have used a journaling app before but it went belly up and was disabled by no updating to make it usable in later OS iterations. The advantage of Apple's would be that it would be updated regularly or be provided a migration strategy like they have with other apps they discontinued. Did I miss the statementyou could print the journal? Not being able to extract it if you left the Apple universe would be bad.
Won’t replace my DayOne app. DayOne will let me print my journal at end of year.
I guess I didn't realize how detailed (and frankly somewhat stalker) the journal app could be. Though about trying it in the fall and frankly forgot about the app all together. Maybe I'll give it a try for a week and see how it feels.
Is this app only available in the states? I’m in Canada I’ve never seen it.
Your channel is so good❤
is journal app available on ipad
Been with Day One so long, can’t see me switching.
I've been using the journaling app since it became available and have been so frustrated with it. I think a "timeline" should be the framework for all of your content (locations, videos, pictures, spotify, files, and any other type of file). content should be built around your framework for your life and the iPhone is the best place for that because it's already keep track of so much about you. I hate that there's a limit on storage?? What if someone wants to do a video journal? I think it shouldn't even be separate storage at all. It should just pull from the photos app. I have so many suggestions that I know people will love but it requires they rethink the way they organize content. There's a way to do to it to place all your content on a timeline and those interested in organizing and journaling can curate memories and write about experiences.
Bridget made a good point about this making it just one more reason you’re outdone easily switch to android. I personally never have written journal entries, but apparently I’m in the minority.
I'm sticking with my pen and paper journals. There's something about writing on paper that journaling apps just don't and never will give me--a connection to what I'm writing.
well, digital is also good i feel
Is there ANY such even comparable smart journal app on Android? Is it expected from Google or any of the other players?
I hope this gets improvement. Mine felt pretty blank.
Wait........entries aren't searchable? That's one of the biggest benefits of using an app over a paper journal. Looks like I may not be switching from Day One after all.
I have the latest iOS, but don't see the Journal app.
Trying to see how this can help me as a producer. Record and writing down session ideas and sounds. I’ll have to see , lyrics beats and video for each session. 😅 🤔
Hear me out, what if in near future, Apple allows sharing but only on the Journal app itself, making it Apple exclusive social platform. I see the potential.
As journals and diaries are often seen as a private thing (at least in the physical world,) I think it would be a bit of a strange idea to the public…..at first. That being said, this is a really cool idea and could explain some things like the file size limits. Being Apple, they will probably lock it down to contacts, but that may not be a bad thing.
I would like this app if I could share stuff I write down to my therapist.
what case are you using?
I just started 🎉 it’s amazing! 😊
Will they have on the iPads?
I wish I had this app when I went to Japan 6 months ago 😢
Great video! Cant wait to try this.
Aww, you have adorable children.
Not having a search is a bummer. I usually search the amount that I paid in a barber I went to in a different location.
It looks promising and might influence me to start journaling again as I prefer digital anything to analog, but why is it not available on ipad? it seems natural to use there with Apple Pencil and my ipad mini. There are many third party apps that do similar Journal, scrapbook, vision board things, I can’t see using this on my small iPhone screen…
I been using it and like it! Thanks apple!
Good stuff looking forward to it the new app
Missed opportunity to not release it on the ipad. The only apple tool that you can use a pen to write these thoughts down.
Journal doesn't have a calendar view which throws me off. I'd love to be able to have a quick overview of what happened when
Meh. I may try it when it comes to mac. I am
Not going to type journal entries on my phone.
I use shared albums as a form of journaling. I post to a private shared album and write a story bellow it. Then someday when everyone I know is old, I’ll share my giant album of family stories with everyone around me
Can’t wait for this app!
6:12 this is a good line of thought to have. A good thing to question.
Something like this is generally only a 3rd party app away from a solution.
How many things can you do on your iPhone that absolutely don’t have any way of being carried over to an android device? I’m guessing you’d want to focus on features from 3 years ago or more to give developers time to write new apps for a feature that has had time to get high adoption rates.
I’ll keep using Day One
Are you able to write? Or is it all photos and typing
Most people should seriously consider how much they share on social media, I love this new app but I wish you could collaborate with contacts!
Why is it possible to enable face ID for the journal app but not the other apps ??
Privacy
About the share thing…I realize it may add another click (or 2, depending on the length of the entry that you want to share)… Wouldn’t it be possible to take a screen shot and share that? A fairly simple workaround.
lol 😂 y’all know the screenshots grab can re send photo @ work around
I love my Day One app.
I was looking to an app that is connected to my eyeglasses that takes short videos every hour so I can remember what I have done today, this app will show me only pictures of clouds since my photos are mostly about clouds and Ai :)
What is the app called I can’t find it
i will try it out.
Questions, if your journal is backed up to iCloud can you access it from your iPad and your iPhone? Can you use Apple Pencil to write in the Journal app on iPad ?
At the moment, no. It’s only an iPhone app as of 17.2. But I’d be really surprised if they’re not already planning on iPad and Mac updates in the future.
So why did the clickbait photo show the pencil being used?
@@longboardfella5306It’s a playful joke. She’s “writing” in a paper journal with her iPhone peeking out. Ha no “clickbait” there.
I was waiting for the Journal app. Not able to do a search and you can’t put tabs on your post to put them into categories makes this a reason not to use it. I pay a yearly subscription for Day One to add more photos to my post and many other features, I am ok with that. The Journal App does not seem like Apple created it. It is very basic.
Bridget is sweetheart and charmer 🖤
Well I cant find it on the app store even?
Not enough to leave the Day One app for journaling.
Dear Bridget,
Since macOS now supports iPhone apps, you should be able to save your Journal's content on a Mac, photos included. I don't use an iPhone because the audio sucks, compared to my trusty LG V40 (with its high-impedance audio jack and LDAC codec support, ask Steve Guttenberg...), but I'm a writer and have been using Pages for over 20 years to keep a diary and write novels.
Pages supports all sorts of multimedia files and made me ditch MS Word when I updated my first iMac (the 1998 one with Mac OS 9) to Mac OS 10.2 Leopard. Word couldn't handle long files and hundreds of fonts without crashing twice an hour. Pages never let me down, except when Apple removed half of the advanced features for the iPad, but I had bought it and just stopped updating till 2 years ago, when they finally restored long-lost features, like footnotes and the double-page display mode, very convenient with a 27' screen, since you literally can see both of them at full size, plus sidenotes. Being light-sensitive, I'm a big fan of the dark mode as well.
Just know there's no point keeping a diary if it's just meant to be family-friendly. Social media serve your public persona; a journal's meant for processing your intimate thoughts without oversharing like Elon Musk, who should know better at 52, being a rocket scientist and all. I'm the same age and not as smart, but 32 years of journaling made me wiser, and a decent wordsmith in my native French language.
Take care, Mrs. Carey, and please keep making my Friday.
You probably are actually much smarter than Elon Musk, who is, not to put too fine a point on it, pretty stupid. Lucky, yes, but stupid, too. As we see.
Why can’t the Notes app be used as a journal? It has more functionality, including search. What am I missing about this Journal app that everyone else is crazy about?
I want that on Mac
Apple pen for the phone and maybe it would work for me.
Hmmm i so like this idea but I do see a sneaky “lock in” strategy going on with this.
I recently migrated all of my photos out of iCloud and photos in favor of google photos due to price. I guess I won’t be getting the nice reminders of events of the past.
EXCELLENT expose!!
I see another app, filling your cloud account so that you have to upgrade soon. That’s every company motivation: money
Shame that I can’t cut and paste from a website into my daily posting. Can’t see why this is not allowed though
