I always hear a lot of "the song is part of one large piece of music" talk surrounding BTBAM. It's 100% true, but most people fail to mention that it was literally how they performed it live. The 2 live performances of Colors that I saw started with "Hey we're Between the Buried and Me" and ended about 65 continual minutes of music later after they walked offstage after playing the complete album without a break. And then they'd come back and play an encore. Not to mention line dancing in the pit during the bar/country sequence in this song. I've seen some good shows, but BTBAM is hard to beat!
This album changed the direction of my musical taste, what a masterclass in expression and talent, just an absolute gem. I watch the live colors show every year around Xmas, and well, that may be tonite for me!

As a guitarist that started out playing more simple metal, then metalcore and deathcore, BTBAM is a perfect transition/precursor to getting into technical death metal if that’s your goal. When I saw them playing Ants live, my friends made a big mosh pit in the Country/barfight section. They played at a small festival and most people in the audience didnt look like they have heard about them before, but we the five of us didnt give a shit and we danced and had so much fun. After the concert we chatted with Blake and he gave his drumsticks to one of my friends who is an aspiring drummer. They chatted for 10 minutes or so about nerdy drumming stuff. My friend asked: how did you manage to play through the end of ants of the sky with a broken drum stick? Blake laughed and said "Hell, how did you notice that??" He rushed back to The drum set and came back with the broken drum stick and gave it to him. Till this day my friend talks about this as the best moment in his life

Colors was BTBAM's first trek through a full prog concept album. Most of all the tracks bleed into the next (which is why the start of Ants of the Sky starts with a very abrupt drum fill; The ending to Sun of Nothing has the first part of that fill). Prog rock to it's core. I get jethro tull vibes, I get pink floyd interlude vibes, I get rush drum lines, and sure I can even hear Kansas in there with the way they incorporate their guitar harmonies and soundscapes.
Colors is one complete song that ends as it begins. To me the experience of listening to this album mirrors an intense mushroom trip where everything comes full circle.
I freaking love how you kind of did a double take when the song starts. That is one hell of an intro! It makes much more sense when you hear how "Sun of Nothing" ends. BTBAM albums are made to be listened to from start to finish.
I was listening this album this morning and I thought, “Man, Geebz needs to listen to this.” Little did I know, you were listening to this album at the same time as me.
Hey homie, i haven't watched your stuff in a bit but i just wanna say that what you do here really brings value. Having someone so pleasant and positive who can introduce you to new cool sounds, remind you of stuff you enjoyed earlier in life or make you laugh along with clown core is extremely helpful in hard times for me personally, and is doubtlessly so for many other folks. Appreciate it man, keep up the good stuff!
Now you just need to listen to Bad Habits off of their new album Colors 2. It’s a spiritual successor and has some fun call backs to moments on this album. Loved the reaction!
It finally happened!!! Thank you so much! Please keep the BTBAM reactions rolling, their work soooooooo deserves it. Some suggestions are Silent Flight Parliament, Human is Hell or White Walls
Thank you so much for this reaction! had me grinning throughout the video! This whole album is a 54 minute song and they have a live dvd playing it flawlessly. Hopefully more btbam coming soon!
When I hear someone say “I hear a queen influence” I know you got it. Good work! Queen is their biggest influence. This band (which I’ve followed for nearly 20 years now) always impresses me.
I APPRECIATE YOU GEEBZ! This song is a masterpiece. It's been really cool going on this journey with you over the past years. I truly recommend an extra large gummy bear and a listen through to this whole album.
Tommy (vocalist/keyboardist) does all the vocals besides Paul (lead guitarist) on select tracks and live performances. Jamie King, the producer for this is an absolute legend. The only tattoo I hace ever wanted is from this song. 'Dream on; Fly on... In your mind you can fly.'
This song literally makes tear up at certain points. I get mad goose bumps from ants of the sky still to this day and I've been listening to this album for over a decade already...still my number 1 band of all times. So glad you have videos on them now!!! Been waiting for this moment for long time hahaha
The look on your face right before the ho-down…like you knew what was coming 😂 and every time you wonder if the track flows into the next song, yes yes it’s going to
Aloha from Seattle! I'm still here! Always a pleasure to watch you react to BTBAM, and this is an epic track. Good choice! You should (possibly for one of your Throwback Thursdays, or the like) react to Between The Buried and Me - Mordecai. It's an absolute classic, and really showcases their split personality approach to music composition. You'll dig it. I promise. Happy Christmas, Geebz.
What I love most about your videos, is watching your genuine amusement and internal note and composition tracking you do. Sometimes it's really visible, to the point where I can tell you're just enjoying it jamming out and when your focusing on something specific you're hearing.. I do the same, but I have no idea what it is I'm noticing, but I know it's there, I can feel it and hear it, and watching you provide trained knowledgeable feedback explaining certain things has really enlightened me! Great videos my dude, keep it up
Oh boy, been waiting on this one for a long time! Wishing you and yours a Happy Holidays! Keep up the great content! P.S. Colors is a, for a lack of better term that I know, a "continuous" album, all the songs aside from the first and last lead into each other. I got to see this played in it's entirety right after it was released and it was one of the most magical concerts I've ever attended.
last year during the lockdowns, they did a twitch stream of all the band members in a basement studio do a full start to finish playthrough of colors, and I was there live to see it. It was spectacular, and was a revitalizing breath of sound to hear it (virtually) right from their instruments to my ears at the time. It really is an album I end up listening to right through to the end because of how sunk between each other the tracks are
Had the chills (chicken skin) with you. That solo has always melted me. Can't tell you how much this album meant to me when it came out. I've definitely never binged only one album for as long as I did colors. Masterpiece is an understatement.
This was a phenomenal piece to dissect! I've heard very little of BTBAM, but first heard them from playing Rockband way back when (think it was Rband 2?) Such a killer track, but they really love to experiment, sometimes even within the same measure; just switching it up to not only keep things flowing from one sound to another, but to really showcase their musicianship as the song progresses. This is one of those tracks that you could sample an endless amount from, and each individual section could fit in so many different aspects of music. Really, goddamn fantastic work here! Each musician has their time to shine, and they each come together to pull off an intense piece of work. I didn't even notice the "Rush" sound until you mentioned it, Geebz, but Kansas and a little bit of The Doors (rhythmically, to me) during those softer rock influenced passages really comes through. I would *love* to be in the studio when these guys come together to make music like this happen. Just phenomenal stuff! Thanks for the vid, Geebz, and thanks for everyone suggesting this. Awesome track, keep on rockin', man! Awwwright!
That entire song is like the Spanish Inquisition. When you least expect it, BAM. A different direction. And the little "country" detour toward the end. That was fun!
I can't explain how excited I am to listen to this right now. My all time favorite band and album right here. Anytime I see a btbam song that you listen to....I'm just overcome with emotions. Thank you for giving this a listen.
Just catching your videos on this band. I've been listening to them since Alaska and every single album has been something interesting, different, exciting, and just blows my mind. I love this band. ALSO, this particular song is one of my all-time-favorite songs from any band of any genre. So many feels and vibes, but all carry the same story. It's unbelievable and I'm glad more people have found and discovered it. I have enjoyed over the years just showing people this. The faces people make when it kicks into Country western make me so happy.
Can't wait to hear what you listen to next by them! I'd recommend keeping the train rolling and listen to the track it flows into "Prequel to the Sequel". Happy holidays!
Great song and reaction! I love how much you drool over great bassists. It takes a really detailed ear to hear how they are contributing to the tone and feel of a track, especially in this genre where so much is going on. Keep doing what you do!
Geebz! I'm just so stoked that you've stuck with them after multiple listens. They are a difficult band to react to and dissect but so worth it! Colors was THE life changing album for me and seeing that genuine smile at the hoe-down bit made me just a little teary-eyed because I remember that feeling the first time my friend and I listened to this track. This album is intense, chaotic, and heavy but also paced very well and it leaves you feeling like you went on a truly epic journey once it's all over. I know it's selfish to recommend you listen to the whole thing from beginning to end, but it should be a bucket list item for any music fan that even remotely likes progressive stuff. Cheers!
And another side note: Two of the members of this band originally came from a Metalcore band called Prayer for Cleansing in the late 90s-early 00s. Their lineup wrote and produced a full length album which toured for a bit when they were fresh out of highschool. PfC's release is also recommended for anyone reading this that likes the history of popular bands. 🤘
I would absolutely love to see your reaction to Viridian into White Walls. In my opinion, the best bass solo ever, into an absolutely EPIC end to this album.
Glad to see you revisit these guys again. I'd be keen to see you react to something off their record "Coma Ecliptic", which is their rock opera, for lack of a better phrase. That record features far more singing compared to growling, the instrumentation is more melody driven, and the songs tend to have a more identifiable structure. Love the channel; great as usual, Geebz!
The Colors album is 1 movement, each song flows into the next. There is a really good live version they released that is worth watching from start to finish. its a flawless performance. Colors is the greatest prog album ever released IMO
Great review. I wish I could possibly tell you what this album means to me. I saw BTBAM live for the first time at New Brookland Tavern in SC when they were playing their Silent Circus album with, of course, Glass Casket. I was a young chap at the time, but slowly picking up on all the things you picked up on so quickly, "wow, that bass line is carrying this and not following Paul's lead," "Tommy's crushing vocals are carrying us from heavy to soft," "Blake's drums aren't overdone and trying to drive the track, they're accenting aspects of the track while standing out on their own". I didn't know their names at the time, but man did I learn them as the disciples of prog lol
Musical masterpiece!! I love how it’s like they take each members different musical thoughts during that moment and pooled them all together. 14 songs in 1, an ear candy buffet.
Waited a long time for this one. Glad to see you enjoyed the sonic journey as much as I thought you would. Keep up the good work and BTBAM on rotation, you’ll never be disappointed!
This band always gets me sucked into hours of just jammin. One listen I pay attention to the bass the next the guitar and then the vocals. Love all their albums
Dude you would absolutely LOVE Never Seen/Future Shock from their newest album, Colors 2. Even for them I find it to be extremely innovative and creative.
I heard them in the early 00's and wasn't into the album. Never gave them a chance afterwards. Fast-forward a couple months back and something came on that blew me away. Went thru their discography, and im 2 months in to not listening to anything but BTBAM. Colors and 2 are albums listening to front to back change everything. Individually they are great songs but the whole thing is an experience
I loved going on your journey through this song with you. The big changes and you reactions made me laugh at your genuine shock. This is my favorite song of their so I'm ecstatic you finally got to enjoy it. I've always thought of them as something along the lines of Prog Tech Death Metal with some Jazz Fusion.
Yes Geebz!!!! You did it!!! Thank you SO much!!! This entire album is SO GOOD. I'm glad you liked it. Amazing band, amazing track, and you did an amazing job!!! I wasn't sure how well a piece like this would suit the page since it starts and ends so abruptly, as it is smack dab in the middle of an 8-track concept album which flows entirely from beginning to end, but you nailed it man. Much love.
I'm still here! Great reaction, difficult song indeed but you nailed it! Ants of the Sky is probably their most "random" song, because the changes are so unexpected, but their most recent work is more cohesive while still being as creative as one. Lay Your Ghosts To Rest is a must listen by them. EDIT: And yes, it goes into another song. This album is supposed to be listened as one song, and it's very common for for them in all their albums to connect a song into the next one.
Every time I hear a little bit of this album I get an overwhelming urge to treat myself to the whole thing.
Totally agree. Then I gotta dive into Colors II afterwards 😂. Listening to one song and before I know it, I'm on a 2 hour sonic journey!
Yupp, I'm the same. Gonna have to go listen to this album over and over again for a few days now 🤘
I have the same urge when hearing the intro riff of Astral Body lol

Having someone so pleasant and positive who can introduce you to new cool sounds, remind you of stuff you enjoyed earlier in life or make you laugh along with clown core is extremely helpful in hard times for me personally, and is doubtlessly so for many other folks. Appreciate it man, keep up the good stuff!
I appreciate that SG!
Now you just need to listen to Bad Habits off of their new album Colors 2. It’s a spiritual successor and has some fun call backs to moments on this album. Loved the reaction!
I absolutely love Geebz' faces through the first section. Awesome.
Did you meant to say 64 min song my dude? Lol
I LOVE watching you smile at what music has to offer man. Keeps me coming back. Cheers!
When I hear someone say “I hear a queen influence” I know you got it. Good work! Queen is their biggest influence. This band (which I’ve followed for nearly 20 years now) always impresses me.
I’ve seen these guys perform this entire album live and it’s truly an amazing experience.
This is my absolute. So glad you got to enjoy this one. All the best Geebz!
The lead singer, Tommy, does the harsh and clean vocals. Thank you for this video! I love this channel! This is my favorite band, btw
I listened to this album ad nauseam from '07 - '11 and constantly find myself listening to it year after year. BTBAM are absolutely amazing.
Just bought my tickets to see them once again in march 2022. : )
I APPRECIATE YOU GEEBZ! This song is a masterpiece. It's been really cool going on this journey with you over the past years. I truly recommend an extra large gummy bear and a listen through to this whole album.
Love these videos ... music is the best
Tommy (vocalist/keyboardist) does all the vocals besides Paul (lead guitarist) on select tracks and live performances. Jamie King, the producer for this is an absolute legend. The only tattoo I hace ever wanted is from this song. 'Dream on; Fly on... In your mind you can fly.'
such a beautiful line. I'm not sure where Tommy comes up with the lyrics but the deeper I delve I love them more and more.
Yes! My favorite BTBAM song. And from one of my favorite albums of all time
These guys are from my town of Raleigh NC. Never met them but I've seen them live heaps. They started a mosh pit at the NC State Fair in 2018
I'm from Ohio, but I'd love to go to Raleigh someday to see BTBAM. Hometown shows hit different, I'm sure!
@@fractallusion7121 they are. Hopefully you'll get the chance
This song literally makes tear up at certain points. I get mad goose bumps from ants of the sky still to this day and I've been listening to this album for over a decade already...still my number 1 band of all times.
So glad you have videos on them now!!! Been waiting for this moment for long time hahaha
"Metal slam poetry" is without a doubt the best way to describe both Tommy's vocal style and also his lyrical content, hands down
The look on your face right before the ho-down…like you knew what was coming 😂 and every time you wonder if the track flows into the next song, yes yes it’s going to
Aloha from Seattle!
Great videos my dude, keep it up
Between the Buried and Me never disappoints! One of the greatest bands EVER!
Love that you reacted to this one Geebs, huge BTBAM fan and this is my favorite track by a long shot.
OMG Finally
Yes yes yes!!! All the way yes
This was a phenomenal piece to dissect! I've heard very little of BTBAM, but first heard them from playing Rockband way back when (think it was Rband 2?)
Such a killer track, but they really love to experiment, sometimes even within the same measure; just switching it up to not only keep things flowing from one sound to another, but to really showcase their musicianship as the song progresses.
Hollllllyyyyyyyy yesssssss FINALLY!!
Edit: King Crimson is a strong BTBAM influence, among others you mentioned
Sickest transitions of any band.
Wow I am sooo happy you did this one
Their bassist is truly amazing. He's a joy to watch.
Btbam has been my favorite band for going on 20 years!!!
Can't wait to hear what you listen to next by them! I'd recommend keeping the train rolling and listen to the track it flows into "Prequel to the Sequel". Happy holidays!
Prequel to the sequel crazy 💪💪💪💪😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈 I felt in love with turn on the darkness from the coma ecliptic album
Great song and reaction! I love how much you drool over great bassists. It takes a really detailed ear to hear how they are contributing to the tone and feel of a track, especially in this genre where so much is going on. Keep doing what you do!
It’s always amusing watching people react to this song for the first time 😆 it has like. 10 songs within the song.
I 100% get "Like a Prayer" vibes at that exact moment.
Cheers!
So I love Prog rock & metal but I never listened to these guys for some reason. Thanks for illuminating me!
And another side note:
Two of the members of this band originally came from a Metalcore band called Prayer for Cleansing in the late 90s-early 00s.
Really liked the take of the metal slam poetry. That’s a great way of thinking about their vocals
Turn On the Darkness is my vote for Coma Ecliptic song 🤯
I love watching people react to this song. The look on everyone's face during the hoedown section is always so great.
Long live BTBAM!
Never forget moving to a new state when I was younger and this album came out and it saved me.
The Colors album is 1 movement, each song flows into the next. There is a really good live version they released that is worth watching from start to finish. its a flawless performance. Colors is the greatest prog album ever released IMO
The first time I listened to this song, it made me cry.
Can't believe i missed this, looking forward to this, one of my favourite BTBAM songs.
Musical masterpiece!! I love how it’s like they take each members different musical thoughts during that moment and pooled them all together. 14 songs in 1, an ear candy buffet.
u right man !
Always good to see some btbam on the channel. Seasons greetings to you and yours from the UK.
I vibe with you so much!
You gotta see them do it live. One of my favorite bands of all time. Seen them twice. They have a Colors (this album) live DVD. Good stuff.
Dude you would absolutely LOVE Never Seen/Future Shock from their newest album, Colors 2. Even for them I find it to be extremely innovative and creative.
That song is sick!
The Bassist Dan Briggs is in a side band called ORBS I highly recommend giving them a listen, I recommend their song "People Will Read Again".
That entire album is phenomenal.
Trioscapes and nova collective are also amazing projects of his
Don’t forget his other sick ass band Nova Collective. I recommend the song “State of Flux”.
Love this song, love this channel, love anyone who suggests BTBAM! I would suggest a song, but my suggestion is all of them :D Keep up the great work!
That's really awesome you're listening to them. I love that band. Your videos are a treat.
