👴 Old Composer Reactions 🤘
I'm just freaking BLOWN AWAY right now. I've heard of these dudes but never listened to them. This is just the best shit ever. I literally have no words but I'm adding all their Albums to my library. Hot damn this was EXCELLENT 🤘
Get some brother! It's such a trip. Been listening since Colors released and that album changed my life, no joke.
Dude! So envious. Wish I could listen to it all again, for the first time. Enjoy Brother. 🤘
and the more you listen, you'll develop an endless obsession
@@dlawless88 ha!
Fuck yeah dude. Welcome to the BTFAM!
Once you know all their albums inside and out life becomes so much better.
this
It's actually how you learn to pass through solid matter 👍
@@muffinstuff6195 astral body
Glad you chose BTBAM for this. What a fun band to listen to.
Edit: You don't even have to do it on the channel, but listen to Colors all the way through in one sitting. It's a masterpiece.
Parallax 2 live would be sick too! Just seeing the dudes just crushing is always amazing
100% I really wish he'd do a whole review on colors
Road trips with 'Colors' is a must.
"I'm not gonna take a guess at what kind of a song this will be" he says before pressing play on Voice of Tresspass - good call 😂. Even us long-time fans were blindsided by that track.
Also, I'm still here!
They can get away with playing anything and be good. I think of Candiria. Another group that can do this.
"And at this point, the only reaction left is completely visceral." Welcome to BTBAM. Eventually you're just along for the ride wondering how they even do it. They've been my favorite band since 2009, when I first listened to Obfuscation while mowing a lawn. Imagine having your whole view of the possibilities of music changed while cutting grass.
I remember the first time I listened to that album.. I was sitting at the table in an RV on our way to a nice little camping spot going up & down these narrow mountain roads. Watching the serenity of the nature I couldn't hear over the chaos of the music while sitting in a moving kitchen was pretty awesome and surreal. I've been into these guys since Alaska came out but when I listened to The Great Misdirect I got even more into them and have seen em a few times since then. Colors in its entirety was probably my favorite show I've ever seen.
I heard Mordecai on an old Hellfest compilation dvd around 2004 or so. They’ve blown my mind ever since. Every single song is incredible. By far my favorite band!
This band doesn't have a bad album, from Alaska forward is pure magic.
The two before Alaska are also fucking fire.
for real, very slept on, but genuinely great@@tiberious_jefferson
Your mom is a bad album
@@Calamitouswhy slept on ? Dopey
Try their first album
My uncle is local well renowned Jazz musician. Can professionally play 7 or 8 instruments. The man eats, sleeps, and breathes music. He was never a rock guy and definitely not metal. He heard me listening to “Memory Palace” and stopped dead in his tracks to listen with me. He kept pausing and rewinding and it made me think of you lol. He made the same comparisons to Queen and The Yes. We traded bands. Now he’s gone down the BTBAM rabbit hole and I am going down The Yes hole as I have never even heard of them (absolutely love them now).
His favorite song and song that made him bring up The Yes is “Coma Machine”. Don’t even care if you don’t do a video on it. Just listen to it at your own leisure.
I love this, so much. Every person who loves music just wants to share it with a friend and watch their first reaction. In my case, not many people I am close to have an appreciation for BTBaM. It is so refreshing to watch you, my remote, virtual friend, experiencing this for the first time and appreciating it like I do. Please don't stop doing these videos.
I recommended btbam to couple of friend, and they didn't like it. Well, they didn't really into metal in the first place anyway. It is really nice to have geebz doing these videos.
Yeah I don’t know ANYONE in person whether a guitar player and/or metal head or music lover that gets BTBAM, truly their loss!! They’re sleeping on in my opinion the most talented band out there! I’ve gotten my wife to appreciate SOME of their stuff but I think it’s mostly because she knows how much they mean to me
@@harrisonbricker5662 exactly the same for me. took my wife to see them last year and she appreciates them bc she knows how much i love their music
My friends arent much into metal but i bought all of them BTBAM tickets for next week because i want them to understand
@Harrison Bricker same for me. But that's just how ot started. She saw them once and is in love now. No other metal whatsoever in her Playlist. We've been to ten shows together now for them. Seeing them live just made them click for her. Love that woman lol.
Can confirm, BTBAM is absolutely INCREDIBLE live. Every show has a different vibe, they're all mixed perfectly, and they usually improvise an entirely unique thing for each tour. One time they ripped into a 10 minute jazz session that was just incredible.
Their shows are definitely worth going to. The astounding quality of their musicianship is 100% translated to their live show. They don't have too much going on visually (anymore than normal for a metal show) but seeing them able to play their songs is enough to satisfy.
BTBAM MARATHON LET’S GO
You were exactly right on Prequel to the Sequel about it being sandwiched in the middle of an album and having tracks lead into it, which in this case is Ants of the Sky leading into it... Colors is an absolute masterpiece, and it's all meant to be listened to start to finish as one long song
seriously is such a well put together album. I get 2112 vibes from it it's just a trip
If you like the bass there is a sick bass solo on the track after Prequel to the Sequel. And the album is Colors, greatest prog metal album ever made.
You know every BTBAM diehard gets excited to see how you react to certain parts.
I'M STILL HERE!
Voice of Trespass, baby!!! I've asked so many times!
Actually, damn! That whole line-up rules! You rock, Geebz!
same!!🎉
honestly btbam doesn't have a single bad track
I think one of the most unbelievable parts of BTBAM is the fact that Blake (The Drummer) goes into the studio and records every one of these songs by memory. So pre-tracking or anything. Just puts on a click and goes nuts.
Not true.. He writes and practices the material prior to entering the studio
@@ardiberen Kinda true, he definitely is insane compared to most. In there recording of P2 one of the longest albums it is showed he finished the drum recording of it in just 2 days,
This is such a strange comment lol. You think drummers write sheet music for original songs? Session players and gigging wedding/jazz guys of course have charts. But literally everyone playing original songs is doing it from memory. Do you also believe that the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix didn't know any music theory?
@@friedsensei ?? Do you think Ringo remembering a Beatles album start to finish is the same thing as memorizing a BTBAM album start to finish? I was literally gushing over his talent the same way his own producer was on the making of for that record. What planet do you live on where you think me giving a compliment to a drummer means I need any kind of insight from you about what the Beatles or "Wedding Guys" do?
Right, like I said... He records it from memory. Didn't say he didn't already know what he was going to play.@@ardiberen
Every one of their songs is just “I have no idea what’s coming next”. Then it comes and it’s the highest level of whatever they choose.
This might be the best description of them I've ever heard
"I'm sweating under my moobs!" I love you hahaha
A) If you ever have free time (I know that's a big ask), please listen to any of these albums from cover to cover. It's a totally different and unique experience. I'd personally recommend anything from the era of Colors, TGM, Parallax II, and Coma Ecliptic
B) Song recommendation if you plan on doing more BTBAM on this channel: Extremophile Elite, and this is the rare case where I recommend doing the LIVE version because it's recorded for a live album and you obviously get to see the band work.
Thank you for everything that you do.
The first time I saw BTBAM was on the Alaska tour and they played Backwards Marathon and I wish someone took a pic of my face when Tommy Rogers hit those notes live even better than in the studio...
They played it on their most recent tour and he still absolutely crushes it
I’ll die on this hill lol, you gotta check out The Dear Hunter sometime. Tracks I’d suggest are “The Bitter Suite I & II: Meeting Ms. Leading/Through the Dime,” “Is There Anybody Here?” and “Ring 3 - Luxury.” Cheers Geebz love the videos keep
It up
Is There Anybody Here is such a fantastic tune.
I'm like 98% certain "Is There Anybody Here?" is just an unreleased Floyd song TDH bought the rights to lol
Hard agree
I've been watching this channel forever and I've always wished he would take a look at The Dear Hunter!
He could even react to the covers that BTBAM and TDH did of each others songs
I love when you comment on the bassist, because Dan Briggs is my favorite metal bassist. He's one of the most melodic bass players, and I love the stuff he writes.
Also, they are incredible live. Very inredible.
Just letting you know Prequel To The Sequel is from Colors. One of my favorite albums of all time
The middle portion of Backwards Marathon is one of the most beautiful moments in BTBAMs discography
The Great Misdirect is one of the best albums of all time. God I love it. For me that was BTBAM at their peak. 4:57-7:30 (or 38:35-42:40 on this video) on Obfuscation is so insanely good, I always have to rewind it back and hear it again when I'm listening to that song.
I agree man, as much as I love Alaska, that build up to that first breakdown in Obfuscation is incredible. This album kicked me in the teeth.
Future Sequence is my favorite, but I'd put TGM after that. Both are better than Colors though in my opinion. Geebz needs to do Silent Flight Parliament and Swim to the Moon.
@@metalboy27 I agree. Parallax II is my absolute favourite, followed by TGM and then Colors. That whole era was peak BTBAM though.
Colors, TGMD, Coma Ecleptic, and then everything else is interchangeable for me... Coma is such a great concept album. The last 3 song play such a great musical story
Parallax II and TGM are the two I go back to most.
You are correct, seeing them live is an incredible experience. =)
While they are great live, they also tend to be on a smaller budget so don't expect shows like Devin Townsend with huge screens and backup singers or dancers everywhere. It's usually just a giant wall flag with some sycned lights on stage. The band members are the main attraction. Would love if they went all out though and did a Parallax story arc play through with projectors and stuff.
Seen them 8 times, will see 8 more if I get a chance.
The solo at the end of obfuscation is one of my fav Btbam moments in their catalog. Nice selection here Geebz.
My favorite band ever!!! So glad you got to listen and react
I'm still here! Watched the whole thing!
Picking in chronological order was a GENIUS move because they evolved so much over the years, that's what i love the most about them: they're always moving forward. They could be like "oh, fan favorite album is Colors so let's write like that over and over again" but they don't, their creativity is still flowing to this day, and i've been a fan for 11 years!
Still here. Took some friends who had never heard BTBAM, or ever liked metal, and they were blown away. Absolute beauts on stage and record.
With regards to the production quality of the earlier albums (Alaska, Colors, The Great Misdirect), they have all be recently remixed/remastered by the original producer Jamie King because he said he's learned a lot since the original recordings of those albums and they do sound a lot better. I would recommend listening to them going forward.
I've been waiting for this for so long! Next up if you react to them again in the future, the combo of Black Box/Telos would be amazing to see your reaction to!
YES
black box/telos/bloom!
I saw them live close to 15 years ago, It was 3 (three) (amazing local ny band), Between the buried and Me, Dream Theater, and Opeth. They didnt have any screens going, sorry to burst your bubble, but this was in NYC back in 2008. It might just have been the greatest show i've ever been too. Even got to meet Michael Akerfeldt after the show.
Saw them on that same tour just in St. Paul. Great times.
Colors is THE album I would ask anyone to listen to if they want to know what BTBAM is all about. While it ideally needs to be listened to in one sitting, if pressed for time, I insist that people at least listen to the last 3 songs in sequence (Prequel to the Sequel > Viridian > White Walls). It is some of the most intense, incredible music, and that final guitar solo is just… I get chills every time. I saw them live in Camden back in 2011 and they played that trio, and I felt like I was floating for the rest of the night. It was one of those life affirming moments.
Yessss.
I love BTBAM. For me my favorite albums are Alaska and Colors. Alaska because it is just relentlessly chaotic. But incredibly well written. And then colors is when they started experimenting with newer sounds
PTTS is one of my favourite songs of all time, looking forward to this. The rest are amazing picks too!
Oh this is well deserved. Very excited.
Love them live. The first time I saw them, they finished with Bohemian Rhapsody. It was fantastic!
It was years ago, many. They actually opened for Terror in Massachusetts at the palladium. They had no flash nor did they need any because they sounded album quality live and I remember leaving that show almost traumatized that they weren't the headliner.
I will also add as iv had too much "coffee" Colors is there best work toeing the line of true deathmetal/core and a massive dose of prog creativity and still stands the test of time musically and production wise. Imo damnit.
Can’t put into words how happy I am that you did my favorite track of theirs; Backwards Marathon
The angsty growling is annoying though :p
@@dodgrblu that riff when it comes back after the slow part makes it all worth it.
@@dodgrblu lol I was able to see past it as a kid when everything else was happening around it and when the angst was present in myself as well. You can’t deny the genius being btbam. I grew up a deathcore kid. U grow out of things tho. Bands like btbam bless your existence in expanding your awareness and develop your taste and grant you appreciation for MUSIC as a whole and it’s multi faceted genres. I do hate metal vocals now and did over masterpieces these guys created, but I could still appreciate how they contribute to something like this. Modernly bands like ERRA don’t need to do it
Loving the longer episodes Geebz! Amazing as always.
I can't believe I'm just now watching this. BTBAM is one of my all time favorite bands. I love EVERYTHING they do and can binge listen to their whole discography for days🤘.
I'm glad you threw Mike Patton out there. My love for Mr. Bungle is what drew me to BTBAM originally. This was awesome man.
I’m still here!
I’ve been following these guys since “Colors” came out and had the fortune of seeing the 10th anniversary Colors show in 2017.
Definitely the most surreal and connected concert-going experience I’ve ever had seeing them play this album front to back!
Love your reactions to BTBAM!
Crazy talented band
Please do their song “white walls” while I’d prefer the whole album of colors (the one with prequel to the sequel) I’ll take what I can get 😅
He needs to do Veridian/White Walls that is the only way to hear it. Hes always upset when he misses the good transitions and that bass solo is gorgeous
Love Veridian/WW to no end. The two closing tracks on Colors II are also fucking stellar. I really liked that album, it did justice to Colors but was still its own entity.
@@nickhaas9185 and it NEEDS to be the live version cause the scream at the end of white walls is fucking ultra mega super dope.
So much yes. Veridian going into White Walls is one of the best moments in metal I have ever heard - they have to be listened together.
Yessssss! I LOVE BTBAM, been listening to them since I was probably 15 and I'm now 32. They are TRULY one of the most talented bands out there. Even though they have become fairly well known, I think they deserve a WHOLE lot more of attention and fandom. I had the pleasure of seeing them live a handful of times back in the early 2000s and they were one of the few bands I've seen live (and I've seen 100s of bands)that sounded as good if not better live.
Also I have to say that it is quite refreshing seeing someone of your generation (not trying to call you old
Love that you did a deep dive into BTBAM, but these songs hit so much harder when listened to in the context of the full album.
I saw them play Colors in full when they came to Australia 10+ years ago, one of the most memorable shows i've ever been to
BTBAM is such an amazing band in my opinion. I feel like the breaks in between the heaviness just make the heaviness hit that much harder. The contrast that they add sporadically always feels welcome and never out of place within the context of their music.
My body is ready
Enormous effort picking apart all the nuances across these tracks, nice work Geebz!
I've been to every live show when they come down under and there's really not a huge amount of visuals and gloss to their live shows - they really get up and just play through their sets flawlessly. I mean, they really just play their tracks and it sounds exactly like their recordings, it's such a headspin to have a band this technical perform these complex tracks so perfectly. It's what makes their shows so special.
You're always praising the bassist Dan Briggs, highly recommend you check out the song "Viridian" off their live 'Colors'; DVD - there should be a few videos on UA-cam of it. The track is 3 minutes of pure bass solo which I know you'll dig. See you on the next video!
You honestly could have picked any BTBAM songs and I would have been happy, but still you picked some great ones! The palm muting riffs at the beginning and first verse of Backwards Marathon are a couple of my favorite riffs of theirs.
Geebz, I can’t recommend enough seeing this band live. They are such a fun band to see live and play so well. Truly a sight to behold.
Greatest band ever. Glad to see folks appreciating.
The thing I love most about these videos, is you always seem to latch on to little parts that stick out to the fans. We get to see you experience those for the first time, and you never seem to miss them.
the song after prequel is named viridian. just a chill bass solo to get ready for white walls. the very end has this really unique progression that feels like a drastic weather change or something. 10/10 would recommend
So I actually saw these guys last year, and they had no crazy visuals or anything believe it or not. Just the band playing 2 sets with their instruments, basic light work, and just stunning musicianship the whole way through. And it was am incredible show. To anyone reading them, if BTBAM are coming to your town GO SEE THEM!
That tour was so fucking good. I’ve seen them ten times and make sure I go see them at least once a year
I’ve been waiting for you to get to Obfuscation. Some of my favorite bass work in their entire catalog.
Your BTBAM videos are the best, thank you for doing more
Wooo! *Between the Buried and Me* 😀! These longform, slow-burn sessions are featuring great selections for my taste lately! Aaand... _objectively_ *great bands and great songs* 🤓.
I’m still here! Amazing 4 songs to choose from BtBaM! Loved this Slow Burn
Loving your reaction don't ever worry about BtBaM songs that weave onto eachother cause it's practically all their music can't really be mad about it ending abruptly going one at a time haha
I'm still here! Also a few random notes/comments/context throughout:
-Prequel to the Sequel is off of Colors and immediately follows Ants of the Sky. So think back to that song and you'll get a sense of why that album is talked about 15 years on.
- The bassist said in an interview that he's of the school of Zappa in his approach (and also has a few fusion side projects)
- I had to chuckle at the repeated "this song goes into something else".
-Finally, you make reaction videos that people like me watch all the way through. I'm here for it, man!
Still here, thanks for giving them a listen! Always makes me happy to see them being appreciated by new listeners.
Geebz, please go to one of their shows, you deserve it.
I loved watching you experiencing these songs!!! There are SO MANY songs they have that take you on a journey!! I think you’d love “the proverbial bellow” or “sun of nothing “ and “Never seen/future shock “ In my opinion ALL of their stuff is golden.
Again, was so lucky to see these guys live, as a warmup for the Contortionist. Couldn't believe their performance, especially the drummer, sooo busy, every bar different. I wonder if I would appreciate them anywhere near as much if I wasn't blown away by them, that night.
Finally had the chance to dive into this slow burn. Thanks again for mentioning the engineering role Jamie King plays in these songs. He really does create soundscapes that encapsulate what the band is doing in such an "organic" way for this group of dudes. Proud of all of my NC/Winston-Salem folks (Blake, Dustie, and Jamie) and hearing them being deconstructed by the decomposer when I used to watch them perform in venues when we were all 15/16 years old. I remember watching BTBAM with Blake and Dustie before they were in BTBAM and in opening bands FOR BTBAM. Love these guys, and I appreciate you Geebz for appreciating them as well ❤🤙
"I am dumbfounded... by the journey."
Yep, that sounds about right lol
If you want to get a short BTBAM song in that just doesn't stop I HIGHLY suggest "Autodidact" mind-blowing both musically and lyrically. PLEASE do this one! 😃🙏🏼🤘🏼
I think you nailed it. Every song has this classical feel of having multiple movements within it, in comparison to the full album with its own movements.
Yesssssss been waiting for this one! Took a sick day from work today and this just makes things 100x better! Thank you so much again Geebz!
edit: Oh yeah, still here Geebz.
Hawt transitions for everyone! Man this band never ceases to amaze
World class musicians from North Carolina !!
It really is a pleasure to see someone appreciate BTBAM to the degree geebz does. The common reaction feels like im casting pearls before swine. Speaking of, "pearls and swine" can we get a Jinjer slow burn ASAP please. Keep doing you geebz, you the man :)
P.S. Do yourself the service of seeing them live at some point lol
The shows are visually enticing though it is probably less for the reasons you might have thought, & more just because you are watching the band play and their musicianship is incredible. Tommy's vocal range, Blake's drumming, epic guitars and bass all have the capacity to stun you. Gotta see it!
This is my favorite video you have done.....more of these please.
Like others have said, BTBAM is not overly visual live, but are incredible. I've seen them play Colors, The Great Misdirect and Parallax II in their entirety and it is always amazing!
thank you sir! these breakdowns are always amazing :)
BTBAM rocks.
Obfuscations solo(s) are soooo good. Especically the first one
BTBAM is fantastic live. I've been to many metal/hardcore/rock shows over the past decade and the one that will always stand out for me is when BTBAM performed from start to finish Parallax II: Future Sequence. They didn't say anything at the start of the show or during, it was just a giant performance flowing from one song into the next and it was EPIC. Sure I've enjoyed shows where I can get in the pit and thrash about or bands with incredible crowd singing moments, but this BTBAM performance was top tier.
favorite band of all time
thank you Geebz you're the absolute king of intelligent reactions!!
I absolutely love the way you break down the way you hear music. It's always so respectful and open minded, really incredible you deserve a ton of credit for that.
Yes they do visual stuff, but you know what's the best visual part of their shows??... to see them play their instrument and enjoy every minute and love what they do .. that's the best visual part of their shows
Man, I love that you did this. BTBAM is probably my favorite band of all time. Sick line up of songs, genuine reaction. Nobody can hear everything they do on the first listen, and I think that's why they're so loved, they demand repeat listens, and you're always getting something new.
21:42 Funny you say that. There's a music video for this entire album and I do think I have seen them use some of it on screens live. I think I've seen them 5 times including the second Colors tour where they played this album in its entirety. They are always amazing live. You really need to react to Silent Flight Parliament, especially the live version with Blake's drum cam.
I know how much you love diggin on the bass. Check out Viridian by them. Dan Briggs is an incredible bass player. Loved this video!
My all-time favorite band!
Still here. So great to watch someone experience btbam. Such a wild ride. Keep rockin jeebs
33:24 That's not a record scratching sound. That's the sound of the guitar players fingers sliding across the wound guitar strings. I'm sure that little detail was intentional.
The automata EPs are so fun. I love the Diablo Swing Orchestra vibes of this selection
HELLS YEA! Funny thing is, as many songs as you've heard by them on this channel, you've *barely had a taste* of the insane variety throughout their discography. You could have a separate channel only doing BtBaM songs and it would entertain you and us for months and months.
I was still there. Cheers. Hope you enjoyed that little jaunt.
I'm still here! Thanks so much for your reactions!
awesome! there are so many more btbam songs you can do, I will gladly follow you down the btbam rabbit hole
I'm still here. Still waiting for more please and thank you!
I’ve seen between the buried & me 6 times live including the colors played in it’s entirety & the great misdirect played in it’s entirety. It’s simply the greatest music experience I’ve ever experienced. I highly recommend you see them live 👀
the vocalist plays the keys as well as does vocals live
I’m late to the party but for context when you’re talking about production quality it’s important to note that all of their records up to Colors were recorded with Jamie King in a basement studio. Jamie was an integral part of the North Carolina metal and hardcore scene that BTBAM came out of and did many of of its seminal albums.
Honestly I wish you would have just done a slow burn of the entire Colors album. There is so much meaning that is woven into the concept of the album when you look at the lyrics, flow, and complete versatility of the band; while simultaneously giving a feel of what it's like to be a schizophrenic. And sadly they just aren't a large enough band to have the budget to put visuals on the level of some of the great prog bands. Also, I know i'm gonna get some flack from this recommendation but BTBAM's cover album "The Anatomy Of" is honestly one of my absolute favorite cover albums of any band I've listened to. It really gives you some deep insight into the influences of BTBAM and really has made me appreciate their music even more.
Loving this list, so glad you are giving BTBAM a slow burn session! Aloha!
