Colors is a concept album.
If you listen from beginning to end, it's pretty much 1 song. That's why it started so abruptly, haha.
Same thing with the ending of the song. It just kind of ends because it is about to go right into the next song.
I came here to say this!
I came here to upvote this comment.
👍🏻 you sir are correct
Yes! That's why I never reccomend ants in the sky for a first BTBAM experience. It's a great song, but without context it seems scattered.
Blake Richardson is low key one of the best drummers in metal and has been for years. Dude doesn't get the respect he deserves, he can play any style.
He a thicc boi too.
Bro, he is one of the best drummer alive now that Neil peart has been sacrificed
Records his tracks with no guide guitar to. A total animal. Haha.
This is so true.
@@StevenPGonzalez626 Matt Gartska might have something to say about that
Omg hearing ants of the sky stop and not go into prequel to the sequel was painful
same
I came here to say this. I will like your comment instead. I have to listen to the entire album now to level myself out.
When I saw them liv ethe first time they played the entire Paralax I EP followed by the entire Colors album up through this song. They stopped at the end of this song. They didnt go into Prequel. They went to a different song entirely. It was the biggest feeling of blue balls in my life.
My favorite transition ever
And not hearing Sun of Nothing lead into it 😩
Q: How many more styles can they go through?
A: Yes
This
How long they can keep it up is for the entire length of the album. The whole thing is an absolute masterpiece.
frostogtaake everything they do is a masterpiece
They literally do this every album and play the whole album live from beginning to end.
@@XxFarrinxXv2 actually, more often than not, when I've seen them live, the play a compilation of stuff, instead of entire albums, headlining or not. in fact the first time I've seen them is the only time they've played an album all the way through, which was Coma Ecliptic. I saw them on their Automata tours as well, and eve then they didn't play either part cover to cover. It was Automata songs, and others as well.
They're coming to the US in summer for a double set tour. First set is career spanning, second set is The Great Misdirect in full. Time to Swim to the Moon.
@@bullheadshitface2023 same. When they did their Automata tour, they ended on Voice of Trespass. Best mosh I've been in.
"These guys have no respect for phrasing." is the greatest critique I've ever heard in my life about BTBAM.
"How many styles can they go through?" - Famous last words.
"Yes."
Hahahahahaha!!! This is a god tier comment.
They are a bit like Mr. Bungle in this regard and that’s one of the reasons i have recently fallen in love with their music
I laugh out loud when someone listening to Between the Buried and Me for the first time makes a comment, off of one song, characterizing what kind of band they think they are. Yep, you have no idea and will be pleasantly surprised.
Big tru.
I'd pay a large sum of money to get to experience Colors for the first time again
Yeah. I think it really clicked on my second or third listen for me. The first listen is so utterly incomprehensible and yet you come back for more because you understand that there is something beautiful happening.
i clearly remember my first time
in the car back from work...Foam Born [a].....i went from WTF is this? did i pick the wrong CD from the the wrong band or what? to Hmm...to OMFG Ahhhh in less than 2 minutes
i don't even tell you about the first time i listened to the white walls solo :-)
i then told all my friends about this alien record!!
Yes. This please. Same with Parallax 2
The anniversary show did that for me
This 100%
"Disease, Injury, Madness " is a must from them. And there's more.
Neighcore lmao
@@alrecks619 Neighcore! How have I never heard this term? It's so perfect. Best use of a horse whinny ever. EVER.
I actually for real slipped a disc in my lumbar from booty-shaking my ass too hard at that breakdown
Or Selkies
My favorite song of their of all time
“We are Between the Buried and Me and this is Colors” Watch the live album of this it’s too good!
Christian Sillas I seriously get chills every time I hear Tommy say that
If you play the album version of Ants synced up with the live version, it's dead on. That is some robotic precision in their playing.
Jeremy Rafuse oh hell yeah! The guys are fucking beasts! For a long time I would only just listen to the Colors live album over the studio version.
Not gonna lie. That show was top 3 best shows I’ve ever been to. I would love to relive that day forever.
Christian Sillas not to mention the encore set
Swim to the Moon is probably their wildest song. I also think Famine Wolf would be a good one to react to.
The Ectopic Stroll
@@TheDrewmainia That song is kinda cringe live, those vocals are so hard to pull off lol.
Between the Buried and Me listen list:
Mordecai
Chamilla Rhodes
Selkies: the endless obsession
More of Myself to Kill
Alaska
Lost Perfection (both parts A and B must be heard back to back)
Colors in it's entirety
This is a sampling of the first half of BTBAMs discography
Ah yes... Lost Perfection... Otherwise known as the start of the Parallax journey. Mm
I approve of this list
I approve everything all of this songs where my soundtrack in highschool and collage.
Mordecai should really be everybody’s first Between The Buried and Me song. But your entire list is spot on.

@@vannanalabomba good catch
The songs all kinda bleed together anymore in my heard. Why memorize track names when you've mostly only ever listened to it from start to finish. 😁
It’s actually the middle of the song. The whole album is one song and that track is in the middle.
This. @Critical Reactions: You should listen to all of Colors in one sitting, I promise it will be worth your while.
Kyle Havens I second this! Colors is a music MASTERPIECE!
"We are Between The Buried And Me, and this is Colors"
The disjointed nature of Ants reactions just reminds me of the Prog Nation tour when they opened and played a set of Son of Nothing and Ants. You kind of need both to get a decent picture of what’s being presented.
@@matteopriotto5131 *gossebumps intensify*
They are so talented. It took me a while to fall but after my second listen I was hooked. The best I can do to describe BTBAM is metal for musicians. It's too busy for most ears. But I love it.
I agree so much. Their style definitely limits their appeal to most, but that's their intention. Music made for musicians is often the most meaningful and inspiring.
Metal for musicians, that's a good one
They definitely get exponentially better the more you listen to them
@@a7xguitar666 100%. The Parallax II is what got me all the way into them. Silent Flight Parliament was my favorite song for a very long time
I can't believe whomever suggested this song didn't also mention it's basically the middle of a song and that you really need context on both ends. React to the entire album!
*him talking about Santana while I'm waiting for the banjo solo / bar fight to start*
Santana is fair, but the real influence’d be more Pat Metheny if I’m not mistaken
This is probably the most genre-bending song in BTBAM's discography. That said, they're super progressive and their music is all around pretty wild. With any of their albums, but especially this one (Colors), you've really gotta listen to the whole album to fully appreciate the individual tracks.
The Great Misdirect is my favorite of theres.
Yaknow, they've just progressed so much as a band and composers and musicians since Colors, I stopped recommending it as an intro to the band. I did Parallax 2 for a while. Now it's Automata 2. In fact 1&2. So damn good. I mean it's all good.
Disease, Injury, Madness....would like to have a word with you.
Swim to the moon!
one of the best metal albums of the century so far, easily.
Truth colors was a huge album and breakthrough in their style but I say their later albums are even better.
One of the best prog bands of the century as well.
No worries, they have a sequel to this now prequel! 🤣
"They got an organ in the background too?" Yes, the vocalist plays keys.
As does their bassist
They have an interview out there somewhere basically saying that on the album cycle prior to this, they were playing Ozzfest and just getting shit on by people at the shows and weren't treated well by the festival as a whole. So they set the idea for their next album, it would be a piece of music that wouldn't make sense in a show environment by pulling out arbitrary tracks, it would need to be listened to as a whole. Coincidentally, Ants of the Sky was the first song they wrote for Colors and it falls towards the latter half of the album. These guys are nuts and I love it.
"I'm just going to buckle my seatbelt and go along for this ride" is what every BTBAM fan came here to see. Also, been said a million times, but just to reinforce the importance, you definitely want to listen to Colors as one track like everyone is recommending.
This album has to be heard front to back. Being thrown into Ants of the Sky with no context is gonna leave you confused af lmao.
I did an album reaction to Colors a couple of weeks ago :) ua-cam.com/video/MaI2Bpa4vHw/v-deo.html
You've been introduced to the hands down greatest band of the modern era. And yes, BTBAM is all about their 7/8 time signatures.
This is, without a doubt, my favorite track from this album and one of my all time favorite BTBAM tracks overall. It's been a long, long time since I heard this for the first time - watching someone else hear it for the first time is just so much fun for me. I legit just sat here and smiled knowing what's coming next. Love it.
Shayla Houser the end of White Walls is SO satisfying thought too. 🤷♂️
I’ve seen them 3 times and what is really amazing is that they play their albums from front to back without missing a beat or stopping at all.
"I wonder how long they can keep this up for." Many, many studio albums. Hah.
Composer: “I cannot comprehend what is happening here”
When you see the honky tonk part in the live dvd of Colors, its what makes me love this band, like I do Maiden and Rush
The band are all smiling, nodding their heads and having their own ho down with the fans..It shows a genuine love of their music, and just like Maiden and Rush, they are having what so many bands have forgotten to do, which is have fun!
I always love peoples reaction to the ho down part lol it's always the same
BTBAM's been one of my favorites for years. Their music's just fascinating. Also one of my favorite live acts - somehow they pull this off pretty seamlessly live on a regular basis. For other tracks to react to, I'd recommend Disease Injury Madness, Extremophile Elite, or - for a little something different - The Ectopic Stroll.
As for revisiting previous bands, you've definitely got to revisit The Dear Hunter! (Who, coincidentally, BTBAM introduced me to.)
Holy god The Ectopic Stroll is amazing
The way they nail everything in their live sets is incredible. I saw them last weekend and it was flawless- true artists.
@@christianmaloney7877 Glad you liked it!
I will never forget the first time seeing them live.. Was my 16th birthday, I was pretty buzzed, and it was one of the greatest experiences of my entire life. The crowd was amazing too.
You best believe the hoedown into the chorus had a biiiiiig ol moshpit lol. For real though the colors album live in its entirety was absolutely the best show I've ever been to
Adam Gardner Hands sown one of the best performances I’ve seen.
That is one of my favorite moments in the history of music. I remember locking arms with my buddy and doing a do-si-do in the middle of the pit when the hoedown came on.
Colors is an album that is one song and it is one song that ends just as it began bringing everything full circle. If you want to understand much of the influence into this band listen to their cover album "The Anatomy Of".
Rewatching.
Again.
I saw them live, and they sounded picture perfect. Tight as could be, and every pitch was perfectly attuned. 10/10
Voice of trespass from their latest album is also a crazy song, love it
I agree
I've never heard big band jazz combined with metal before and they didn't disappoint!
They can change style in the middle of a bar and all of a sudden you are in a bar.. listening to a blue grass lick...
If Kansas were a prog death metal band
Yep, you can never predict what BTBAM is going to sound like, even inside their own genre, which is, apparently, Adult Contemporary Progressive Death Metal
You saw the video too? Love the BTBAM fanbase
Lol!
Awesome tune! The song "Selkies" is my favorite of theirs.
B Well That’s the song that got me into them. It was in the background and I thought it was 3 completely different bands.
White walls is my favorite.
Lol
Check out Rivers of Nihil - "Where Owls Know my Name"
It's a beautiful track that's dynamic, unique and powerful. Love the content man, keep it up!
That whole album is incredible.
This one.
I want this one
@@TheMetallicalf Definitely! It's rare that I download an entire album of someone's, but I've downloaded it all and listen to it regularly.
Both bands are incredibly talented and that album's a masterpiece
Rivers are incredibly talented and master composers
This is my favorite band I have seen them 7 times live. This is in the middle of a concept album where the song before and after transition seamlessly. If you want to give them another chanse I'd highly reccomend Selkies an Endless Obsession or Extremophile Elite (live at the fiddletorium)
I've seen them 12 times. 13th this summer will be happening. Great band.
Same here guys. You seeing them this tour? I’ll be in Pensacola.
I have tickets to Chicago, but It doesn't look like I'll be able to go...
To BtBaM: what genre are you?
BtBaM: Y E S
This was really their first foray into a more prog throw the rule book out the window style. Although colors maybe their best overall album in terms of impact and appeal. Their later work is just much more polished and less chaotic/chaotic and is more flowing/chaotic if that makes sense. This album is from like 2008 and i feel like they have absolutely perfected this sound since then.
Agreed. Everybody acts like Colors is their best record. It was definitely their breakthrough, but they're certainly much better now than they were then.
Thanks for doing these guys; they've been one of my favorites for a while. All of their songs are sort of baffling but they all make even more/less sense when you listen to them in order as a full album. If you're going to do another song by them, I'd say try out "Silent Flight Parliament"; I go back to that one regularly because the progression in it is so weird and good.
This whole video, I was just waiting for the country part. Couldn’t wait to see your reaction to it.
How about some Archspire? I'd recommend "Involuntary Doppelganger" because of the lyrics video, but "Lucid Collective Somnambulation" is also a great choice because of the play-through videos.
I second this. Definitely the lyric video for Involuntary Doppelganger
I would definitely want to see his reaction to Lucid Collective Somnambulation vocal. Preferably the guitars playthrough too ofc.
One thing I would suggest about Between the Buried And Me is to listen to each album in its entirety. As others have said, it is a concept album and you can really hear recurring musical and lyrical concept throughout each album. Also reading the lyrics with the music is important as it, most times, sets the mood of the music.
Great review. Your open mindedness for things you don't encounter every day is quite refreshing.
Great review man. They're certainly pretty spontaneous lol. One cool thing I wanted to point out was about that saloon barstyle part. What's really cool is it's actually the same chord progression and melody as the following part (it was also played early on in the song.) A lot of their music does similar stuff. It sounds so different at first, but after further listens, you'll notice the similarities and see why they suprisingly work together. They're often just the same idea performed in multiple different genres.
You should probably check out Dillinger Escape Plan... I'm not entirely sure what song to look at, because they change so much from first album to next... but I'd say potentially something off Miss Machine, perhaps Ire Works.
I would say setting fire to sleeping giants is a good mix.
@@alis4681 Fair enough, yes. I forgot about that jazzy section.
As for recommendations, The Fall of Troy- Chapter 1: Introverting Dimensions or Chapter 3: Nostalgic Mannerisms (well really the entire Phantom on the Horizon album). It’s a story of sailors encountering a phantom ghost ship and falling into demise. Great storytelling through composition. One of my all-time favorite albums!
...or the Last March of the Ents or I Just got this Symphony Going.
I would love to watch your reaction to the entire album. I obsessed over this album for many, many years.. And i enjoy your commentary. Colors is a concept album and must be listened to from beginning to end.
8:18 Little did Brian know, he was not ready for what lied ahead.
12:55 Brian realizes that he has clearly Fucked Around, and was in the throws of Finding Out!

3:48 Tommy Rogers the main vocalist also plays keyboard.
This whole album is one long song. It's a real treat to see them play this live.
This is exactly as I felt when I listened to this album for the first time. I really enjoyed watching your reaction.
I remember jamming btbam in college, they were amazing live.
The colors concert was a special night for me as a prog metal guitarist. Seeing Zappa plays Zappa is probably the only concert that compares in my mind.
An Abstract Illusion - In the heavens above, you will become a monster
Diff type of prog but the full album Woe really gave me the same excitement colors did. Songs go from one to the next, not repetitive.
Highly recommend 😊
One of these mornings I hope I see that notification for Earthsides's Contemplation of the Beautiful! Keep it up!
They do full albums live
Saw them play colors in Santa Cruz couple years back . Was amazing.

I just saw them 2 nights ago in Sydney play the great missdirect live it was amazing
@@benambrose8895 hey, quick question for ya. Im going to see them in a few months, was there any opening band for the show you went to or was it just them?
@@super1337spy i believe they are playing 2 sets. I'm going to the June 8th show. One is a career spanning set, the second is The Great Misdirect in it's entirety.
I also got an early Avenged type of feel...for about a quarter of a sixteenth of the sections. This reminds me to mind my Twelve Foot Ninja
nice video .. great analysis .. my first time hearing this band, very impressive! Love the insane transitions and tempo changes .. reminded of dream theatre in some ways, except with a growler on vocals
The album is a single work of music; it is art. The band is every bit as good as the recording when they play live.
Like @Jonathan Hurley said, Colors is a concept album that is nearly seamless when played in full. With that said, this song is a great introduction to BTBAM due to the plethora of styles jammed into it.
One of my favorite songs from them is Fossil Genera if you would check it out. I think you'll really like it.
Why I love BTBAM, and this album in particular is because once you speak the language of the songs, and nothing more becomes abrupt, than you realize how many themes repeat throughout to tie new ideas together. They are master at both subtle, and noticeable changes. Every listen adds more texture to the sound.
You would probably like Haken if you enjoyed this.

@@mydamnrssfeed I actually did, thanks mate! :=)
Yes! Finally! I knew you would love them! As others have stated, colors album is essential one track so it’s hard to listen to one song out of context. The album is meant to be listened as a whole.
You should definitely listen to extremophile elite or the proverbial bellow. It’s most recent and musicianship of the highest order. I really hope you listen to more btbam on the channel.
I saw these guys perform the entire Colors album live, it was amazing. First two songs, short break, then the next six nonstop, and then an encore. These guys are one of the greatest live bands of all time, and incredible musicians
"It blows my mind that all these ideas were brought together in the same musical thought" -Me, a 31 year old, ever since I was 15
Watching you get mind blown over and over again was so awesome to see! Reminds me of the first time I heard this song. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Disease Injury Madness or Swim to the Moon would be good follow ups for you to do! I'm sure you have other bands to get to but if you do come back check those out!
I think the A7X comparison is completely fair, even though I much prefer BTBAM. Their style is pretty much just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks, in terms of genre as well as song structure.
It was, for a long time. That album was where song structure started to really take the forefront. Everything before that was pretty grindy, and everything since has been more toward the operatic end of the spectrum. This album is the favorite for many of their fans, because it isn't too far in either direction.
This took me back to my first listen of Colors, thanks for this. Very nostalgic
Order to chaos!!!
it’s like you’ve plugged your headphones into the universes’ CD player, and you’re vibeing with the Gods...
Your emotions become a spectrum and then get all mashed together in this ride that you wish would never end.
I remember hearing these guys for the first time and thinking how fast they flew by, and they got even faster as I got to recognize them only because as I said I didn’t want them to end ! In one sense but I find myself longing for different points within the song that I’m anticipating. But I’m so into it that I just continue bouncing thought it’s progression. It’s beautiful the way these songs make me feel 10 years later..
The tracks are meant to flow from one to the next, which makes the beginning and end of each sound strange when played individually
This is why I love BTBAM. They go through time signatures and styles like it’s nothing and they somehow blend them seemlessly and they make sense, like it all fits.
You are right, this band cannot possibly be maintstream popular ever, they are art metal that is pushing the limits of music every album. And you're right, metal fans that like simple brutal metal don't like BTBAM, at all. It's too much at once for a vast majority of music listeners because it's so densely packed.
But that is why they are revolutionary.
One of my fav albums and bands all time. One big epic tune after the other
Friend bought me a ticket in 2016 before I went off to boot camp. “Who are these guys?” “You’ll see” been a fan ever since!!
I love your reaction. Been listening to Btbam for over ten years. They never disappoint. Thanks for the viddy.
I liked this video man. Glad to see you experience one of my favorite bands. Hope to see you listening to them more! Also, please react to Mr Bungle!!! Any song will do because it will be super weird no matter what.
Interesting A7X comparison. Their early stuff was some of the first metal I listened to...maybe that’s why I was drawn to BTBAM initially. Stayed for the chaos and composition skills.
I don’t know too much technically about music, so it was cool to hear you talk about things with terms as well as point out new interesting things.
Definitely check out (at least what songs are on it) Anatomy Of if you’re interested in their influences. It’s a cover album of what inspired them. Can definitely hear many of them mashed into their music.

12:25 me too man, me too... so creamy-silky-smooth.
I highly suggest giving more songs a listen. All of their albums are great but colors and parallax 2 are absolutely incredible
the hoedown into the outro is the exact same progression, just played melodically in a different signature. the whole album is one song. it's the same as the main riff of the whole song. just like they did with backwards marathon on their previous album "Alaska"
also i didn't mean to sound like a know-it-all i'm just a huge fan of the band who also composes. really great video, keep it up
This was fantastic, can't tell you how long I've wanted to see someone w/ formal comp. knowledge dissect a btbam song 😆 For the reaction, but too explain the nuances & theory.. I only know the basics, still interesting to hear!

I would love to do an analysis of BtBaM one day. There is a lot of stuff that went over my head -- either because it was a first time listen or because it's stuff that is easier to pick up via notation. But if I could get my hands on the sheet music and give it a few more listens I bet I would find a lot of really cool compositional things going on that I missed in the reaction.

The Tide.
Listen to The entire colors album in one listen. Then listen to the next newer Album after that and so on. The addition of Blake Richardson into this band is what sealed this style into such a masterfully packed package. :D
Ants of the sky, backwards marathon and extremophile elite will always have a special place in my heart
How come I just now found your channel? This is wonderful content! Also, try to think of a BTBAM album as a symphony, and each song is a movement. On their magnificent album "The Great Misdirect", they did a better job of naming the tracks where the movements of the symphony actually change. I always thought they just kind of randomly decided where a song begins and ends on the Colors album.
The beginning of the song is foam born the backtrack. The end of the song is white walls. The album is one long song.
Loved them since Alaska. This is a new form of prog metal. Love seeing the gears turning as you try to formulate a sensible thought regarding what you just heard.
I love seeing people react to songs/music that I have been passionately listening to for the past 12 years.
Colors is an amazing album, start to finish. I'd recommend listening to the whole thing if you haven't already. :) BTBAM's been one of my fave bands for a decade or so, incredible musicians.
this guy really says they sound like Avenge sevenfold .....has he never heard dream theater
Thought he was gonna say dream theater
If my mate asked who btbam sound like. Avenged sevenfold would be number 187657 on the list.
Well BTBAM AND A7X were influenced by Dream Theater. So not a stretch at all!
@@Brandon-zn8rf dont here it much in A7X. But was never a big fan and haven't listened to alot of there stuff. Seen em live a few times.
I don’t think this guy knows shit about music.
BTBAM is an extremely interesting case as they come from the oldschool metalcore scene of NC. Tommy played guitar in Undying for a short period and the first two records are completely technical oldschool metalcore. With time they drifted heavily into prog / post hardcore and avant-garde. This gave them the super interesting sound that now one else has.
Ofc they have basically the best players in the biz, which doesn't hurt
Do the entire album and you'll get the beginning ^^
I can't tell you if this song in itself loops, but it's directly transitioning into the next song on the album. As the previous song did into this. It's one of my favourite albums of all time, definitely give it all a listen!
I seen the Colors album live, front to back. They played it straight through and was the greatest live show I have ever seen.
I have been a huge fan since they toured with ABR. AND.... BTBAM is touring alone this year, can't wait!
