DT has never been shy about showing their influences, but this song in particular is one big homage to the old school prog groups of the 70's. This whole album is amazing.

Do you need another epic song from DT?
    1. The Count of Tuscany
    2. A Change of Seasons
    3. In The Name of God
Or maybe do you want epic album? There you go
Metropolis pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory - it's a concept album. Should be heard in its entirety from beginning to end :)

@@almarhulsegge1859 In my opinion In The Name of God is also decent song. Illumination Theory I don't remember that well since I haven't listened it many times as I haven't listened with DTs newer stuff. Not that it's bad, but I just haven't got to listen them enough. Too much music to listen, too little time :). I have listened all their newer albums few times, but it has been a while and I don't know the newer albums like a back of my hand like I know the older ones.

    Other DT musts...
    A Change of Seasons
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (be prepared, it's a long one. Keep the bottle handy. Gonna need refills)
Metropolis Part 2 in its entirety.
Btw, all the noises you hear at the end are the way the album begins. There's a series of albums where the next album begins with the same sounds/notes that the previous album ends with. It starts with Metropolis Part 2 and ends with Octovarium.

In my opinion, this is Dream Theater's best song (which is saying a LOT), one of the greatest songs of all time, and has the greatest guitar solo of all time (the razor's edge solo at the end).

I'll throw Hell's Kitchen/ Lines in the Sand in the mix too. I just think that whole album gets unjustly overlooked. Not their finest, but still far above average. The Count of Tuscany gets a nod too!

    @TheBlackQueen Рік тому +11

This song is littered with many classic Prog Rock references!
-The opening of the ambient synth section was directly referencing Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond
-The flute section was likely an homage to bands like Kansas, Genesis, Jethro Tull, and Camel
-The piano ballad has elements of Paul McCartney's Live And Let Die and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody thrown in
-The Moog Synth solo was straight Keith Emerson praise, as was the following 5/4 Hammond section
-Said Hammond section has one of the most clever lyrical homages to many classic bands and artists (I outlined in another comment)
-The shreddy parts are equal parts Rush and original Dream Theater textures (even a bit of Jingle Bells for good measure)
-The slow building section up to the TRAPPED INSIDE THIS OCTAVARIUM!" section are actually references to the previous 7 songs on the album....I'll tell you why in a second.
-The ending of the song is quite clearly an explicit homage to Pink Floyd's Welcome To The Machine
This album was the second of three Dream Theater concept albums. Whereas Metropolis Pt. 2 was more a traditional Rock Opera like The Wall, Octavarium is more conceptual in it's music and intention. An Octave represents the 8 notes of a major scale (really 7), and DT decided to use this fact as the theme for the album. Each track on the album is written primarily in a different key:
1: The Root Of All Evil (F)
2: The Answer Lies Within (G)
    3: These Walls (A)
    4: I Walk Beside You (B flat)
    5: Panic Attack (C)
    6: Never Enough (D)
    7: Sacrificed Sons (E)
    8: Octavarium (F)
How they called back to these songs in the slow building section (Part IV: Intervals) is quite amazing! Not only did they write the lyrics to reference the songs themselves, but they included snippets of the songs in the backgrounds of each line they were in reference to! Listen back to that section and you'll hear them very quietly in the mix.
Root, our deadly sins feel his mortal wrath, remove all obstacles from our path,
Second, asking questions, search for clues, the answer's been right in front of you
Third, try to break through, long to connect, fall on deaf ears and failed muted breath
Fourth, loyalty, trust, faith and desire, carries love through each darkest fire
Fifth, tortured Insanity, a smothering hell, try to escape but no avail
Sixth, the calls of admirers who claim they adore, drain all your lifeblood while begging for more
Seventh, innocent victims of merciless crimes fall prey to some madmen's impulsive designs
Octave, step after step, we try controlling our fate, when we finally start living it's become too late

They were definitely paying homage to Floyd in this one, as well as other older prog groups. There's a wikipedia page about this song and all of the Easter eggs they put into it, kind of mind blowing that they can think of things like that in the process of writing this kind of music. These guys are also masters at cover songs, and have covered many classic prog songs, mostly live.
More of their "epics" to check out, some have already been mentioned:
The Count of Tuscany, A Change of Seasons, In the Presence of Enemies (parts 1 & 2), Wait for Sleep/Learning to Live, Illumination Theory, Trial of Tears, A Nightmare to Remember, Bridges in the Sky, Breaking All Illusions

Amazing reaction my friend!!....You are the right person to make a reaction video and give us your opinion about this incredible singer...In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just it was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coachs, singers, musicians, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you...You have to be prepared because your channel will explode with an avalanche of views, comments and new subscribers....I leave you one more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....ua-cam.com/video/bDX3FhmyNac/v-deo.html

If you want something like this that's a bit more cohesive as one longer song and not all over the place with a good message, A Change of Seasons. I'm not a fan of the lyrics at all, but musically The Count of Tuscany is one of their greats as well. Special mentions to Breaking All Illusions, Trial of Tears, all of Scenes From A Memory. As for another DT Epic, you should check out Illumination Theory (live at boston opera house)

Really loved watching this reaction and seeing you discover newer prog as the channel grows! This song is what kickstarted my love of music. If you want something really new, we just released a 10 minute song earlier this year (inspired by Rush and Pink Floyd) featuring the drummer of Leprous that might interest you and we'd be honoured to hear your thoughts! Don't usually like to self-promote in comments but I didn't see an email to contact you at listed anywhere.
Either way, love your content and looking forward to watching you explore more of my favourite bands!

I feel that that would require couple listens to get more out of it. If you focus on the story it's harder to focus all that's happening in the music and vice versa.

For my recommandation: A lot of people seem to miss this one in their top how ever many, but sincierly please check out Ministry of Lost Souls. The live version is even better. I got the link here for you beneath the comment. It's one of their less proggy songs, but still very much worth while. It's the most complete ballad I've ever heard. And still my favorite DT song today. I agree with all the other comments in this section as there is an almost infinate number of great songs by DT. But I really recommand this one, because it's missed by so many people, but is such a great song. It deserves to be their among their best songs. ua-cam.com/video/yWF4YRD0X0Q/v-deo.html

I think everyone appreciates DT. But they are a little bit of a love em, or hate em band. Like so many other prog bands 🤣.
Personally, they've never been a thing for me. The talent is unquestionable , but I've never been able to connect with them emotionally ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .They have some epic pieces, but I've never made it through a full album yet. Different strokes my man . That's what makes the world go round. that and coffee. And bourbon....oh yeah ,and money......
