- The new iPhone 13 lineup including the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13 Pro was announced and the biggest news around the filmmaking world has been the new cinematic mode.
So, I got my hands on one and decided to test it out for myself against my sony a7c full frame mirrorless camera to see how this new cinematic mode compares to a pro level camera. This video is full of comparisons of rack focusing, shallow depth of field, and video quality, and to say the least, the results are pretty incredible!

I am a bit blown away at the images and video from my Samsung phone...and it is always in my pocket.
The technology is progressing at an unbelievable rate. Should be interesting to see how the trends evolves over the next few years! Thanks for the comment!
When you pulled up the iPhone box, you can see the edge detection misses/blurs. I'm sure in two-three years from now, it will be much more improved in those areas and in 4K 30 to boot.
Absolutely! As I mentioned in the video, it’s still very young tech but I think you’re spot on, in 2-3 years it will be much improved and will be able to handle 4K. It will be exciting see how quickly it progresses!
@@KH_the_filmmaker yeah, really hoping they actually incorporate the LiDAR sensor for cinematic mode in future phones as that will help greatly with edge detection. Possibly even incorporate dual or quad LiDAR but will see.
Hi did you ever change the aperture to anything besides f2? I wonder if the halo settles down at f8 maybe
I did find that increasing the aperture did make the halo marginally better regardless of scenario but in my tests the biggest factors were lighting and composition, the more contrast and distance between a subject and background the better it performed 👍
This was a great review ! Earned a new sub
A lot more where that came from is on the way! Thanks for the support!
Niceee comparison 😍😍
Bummer that cinematic mode is currently limited to 1080p!
Agreed! Not having 4K in 2021 makes it much less viable for platforms like UA-cam, but for more compressed content for platform formatted for smaller screens I.e. Tik Tok and IG, 1080p is still plenty and I’m sure we will see this mode being widely used there!
Good
Thanks for the comment!
I just read there is difference between 13 pro Max vs mini. Comparing weaker phone option with big camera defeats purpose. This test should be remade with pro max 13
The pro max is definitely a better camera but had to work with what we had access to, the mini is still pretty impressive!
Sorry but the iPhone footage is unusable.
100% agree. I would not use it in professional scenario’s, but I do thank that the casual user will enjoy it as an introduction to producing more professional looking video 👍
If you a you tube creator; nobody body is going to notice the difference
Most people phones have are about average! So 4k video will never truly be appreciated! Especially since people watch UA-cam mostly on phones ; tablets and monitors with mostly 1080 resolution
iphone 13 is veri veri bed phone.
