"just going to apply a LUT to my iPhone so i can monitor while i shoot log footage" wasn't something i would've expected 5 years ago
How do you apply a LUT to iPhone footage while shooting? Please enlighten me
@somewhatboxes please explain
@@therealfats If you actually watched the video, he loads the Rec. 709 lut in the Blackmagic Camera App. 9:25
@@therealfats 3rd party app (black magic) app
@@therealfatsyou can do this through the Blackmagic Cam app
The October iPhone event was shot all on iPhone. I was incredibly shocked when it was revealed at the end, and I think that this featured played a big role.
It's the mac event.
Yes. Apologies, the Mac event. 😅@@forekeeper8508
This made the Mac event an iPhone commercial 😂
It’s actually look insane. Couldn’t believe it when I see it at the end
Anyone know what cage they used on the iphone for that?
It's cool to see this just after the Apple Event yesterday. They used the BlackMagic Camera app to shoot their event and all of this helps to understand how it was possible.
Yeah, thinking the same. I was blown away by how they did it. Amazing.
And it's free to download 🥲 which means everyone with an iPhone 15 Pro can shoot videos like that.
Yeah, un-surprisingly, they didn't use final cut.
@@velociraptor5962 How do we know that?
Says they used davinci in the footnotes of the October video. And black magic software aswell
This was one of the best videos I have seen on the topic! Such a great video. I love that you showed the technical stuff, and didn't try to sell a LUT to convert from Log...for film makers, this may be a valuable tool, but for everyday people who may have never seen or heard of Log before, this may be their first taste!
There is just so much misinformation or misunderstood takes on Log on youtube that it is just a breath of fresh air to hear someone knowledgeable talk about it. Also loved that you showed the whitepaper. Its just a pet peeve when people say "Log is gray and washed out", because its not, of course. This feature is the one reason I really want to get the 15 Pro Max.
It's also great for matching up different cameras in post. :)
totally. i was relatively ambivalent about the news of apple log, which is saying something because i actually own a blackmagic pocket cinema camera. in theory i would be the kind of person who would be really interested in this.
i think my main fear was that even if i enable log mode, i'll be fighting automatic white balance and focus. ZY totally answered that concern - it'll be totally possible to get matching shots with consistent white balance, focus, etc... in apple log. maybe you'll have to use the blackmagic camera app, but that isn't really a problem - blackmagic has demonstrated competence and earnest effort in UI & design, so i don't feel like i'm in shaky hands with them.
Never come across your channel before and this video bounced on my feed after getting myself an iPhone 15 Pro. Gotta say, not only do you clearly understand what you're talking about but you also prove that you do by breaking it down in a way that a beginner by comparison like myself can understand. Excellent job!!
Not to mention, the latest M3 announcement from Oct 30 was entirely shot on iPhone 15. Mind blowing!
Great work ZY Cheng. As usual you did a perfect job of making complex concepts easy to understand.
Hot take: when showcasing log footage you should compare default/DolbyVision/log instead of ungraded/graded log
Edit: 5 minutes in, bravo dude you explained it right on
In my opinion, Dolby Vision was not discussed enough here. To me, Dolby Vision is standard. To me the question is: do I get all the advantages already by using Dolby Vision or do I really need log with the disadvantage to have post processing?
Wow so much work was put into this video, quality stuff like this is what makes youtube awesome. As a cameraman I loved the precision of your research congratulations
man this video was unbelieveably well produced. You're going to be gigantic some day! Thanks for the amazing clear and effective information
The way that you described everything is quite impressive. Very well done video. I can tell how much effort went into producing this. Subscribed!
Legit the most articulate review I’ve seen, wow. Thanks for this gem, it took me a little to digest but has been so helpful.
ZY just discovered your channel… this post is brilliant! Looking forward to learning more. Thank you.
I loved how concise and detailed you were. Thank you so much for the info! 😊
By far the best apple log video I’ve come across on UA-cam . Thank you for your effort!
The must have content! Thank you so
Much and hats off for the effort 👏👏
Another great video, love those in-depth technical explanations 👏
been waiting for a good video on this, thank you! the comparisons were just what i was looking for. I'm convinced!
ZY that review was just brilliant! I plan to watch all your posts from now on...
You present so effortlessly. Such a breath of fresh air and so easily explained. Keep posting :)
that was the perfect blend of show and tell and passion. thank you
never was into Log Profils but randomly comming to your video and now getting explained what it is for :) i now get the point :D thanx
I know nothing about filmmaking but I’ve always had an interest in it and this is such a good breakdown, thank you for sharing! The automatic exposure adjustments infuriate me even as a casual iPhone camera user, so this is definitely something I’ll look into further. It’s exciting how accessible high quality cameras are becoming.
Fantastic stuff, very well presented video. I was planning on waiting a few years for my next phone upgrade but the new video features are basically like buying a very capable b or c camera. I'm impressed with the highlights rolloff, consistent exposure, dynamic range, and the shadow noise pattern but mostly impressed with the lack of over-sharpening.
thanks for making a video not just for hype sake. and showing us all the technical details that goes along with it. i hope to see more from you. thanks again for the video.
Best deep dive into ProRes Log that I have seen. Very helpful
amazingly well done, thank you. Your technical knowledge is jawdropping
LG brought LOG in their V30 and it caught massive attention, at least to the filmmakers. But LG was not taken too seriously, undeservedly i'd say, and sadly now they're gone from the cellphone market. Thanks to Apple, I hope we'll be seeing it in upcoming competitions as well (though Samsung already has pro mode but with no dedicated LOG profile)
LG was sooo ahead of the curve on so many smartphone features. Such a shame they had to pull out
@@fsxaviator as some reputed tech reviewers said, LG tried many novel things but didn't stay on to develop them further. Wish they had. One more competition gone is always a loss for end consumers. Shame indeed.
LG were great, too bad their practical approach was so underappreciated... "we have all that and your phone will keep on keeping on if you drop it.... cause it is not a piece of glass..."
or "yeah it's plastic, so that means it is light, and not a heavy brick in your hand..."
Been an LG comsumer for all my life. But their screen was not on par so I switched to Samsung note 9 and thereafter LG started to produce their best screens. SMH.
I do get pretty alright editability with samsung on hdr10 mode. I think the results might be pretty similar (and on a 600 dollar phone)
One of the informative videos I've seen regarding Apple Log! Subbed. 👏🏽
you're the most underrated tech youtuber one this platform. Every video is better than the one before!
Director Ayodeji just shot all the most recent underscores music videos on iphone. Curious just how big of a visual difference it would have made if they could use log!
...Of course the videos were interesting because of story, lighting composition and performance, but I'm always excited to see how much we can squeeze out of these tiny devices.
This is a great video! Gorgeous examples and well explained.
Great video - thank you so much!
incredible job, what a nice explanation, thanks a lot
I have alway love your reviews, clear and concise. Thanks for the Apple log video.
Thank you for this great content. Seriously!
very well executed video and very informative, love the intro of your video .Very clever !
Great vid, bro! Technology moving forward.
Incredibly clear explanation, great job on this one
wow this is a great great video! so dense but not overwhelming idk how you did it but thanks
This is a super awesome analysis not a diehard film maker but learned so much. Thanks
incredible video as always. If filmmaking was a common interest for all humans, this would be the most subscribed channel on youtube.
Incredibly thorough! Thanks
Brilliantly articulated! 👏👏👏
This is about the best explanation and demonstration of why apple log is so powerful on the iPhone. Well done!
Thank you so much!
Seeing someone from malaysia produce quality content like this makes me so proud!
This is the one and only video explaining this correctly! Congrats, sir!
I like this channel! Keep it up and thanks for the great video
Incredible detailed information in 10 minutes!? Wow that was amazing
Wow, you finally explained tone mapping in a way I can understand it 🤓👍
very detailed video, best as always!
Ah! The first review I've seen comparing processed log with native iPhone video. Thanks.
Thanks you for this video man. It was honestly really helpful. I learned a lot. You explained things in a very simple way. The amount of effort in this is honestly impressive. You definitely earned yourself a sub. Do you have any LUTS or direction on grading?
Nicely explained buddy...cheers !!
"roll with it". I see what you did there. :). very informative!
The delivery of this video is ridiculous! Great content!
I’m not even a film maker but i subscribed after watching this. Excellent job!
Log is at the edge of my focus as a primarily still photographer, but as an old B&W Zone System practitioner I could follow this wonderfully clear video. The Zone System for controlling the grayscale was Ansel Adams’ LUT!
best technical video on iphone 15 video i've watched. (and I watched A LOT of them)
Excellent break down. Thank you!
As a person just getting into editing log video can you please make a tutorial for how you did this? Especially 3:05 how you kept the detail in both the forground and background.
hahah love the ending. great video!
Great review!
Right on time for the Apple event too
amazing explanation
Fantastic video. Thanks for breaking it down.
Thanks for the info
Thanks this was welll explained
I have never heard such an easy technical explanation of any technological feature. Bravo.
This is a great technical breakdown of Apple Log, I appreciate talking about dynamic range and sharpening since those two are often the biggest "ahhh you shot this one a phone" tell-tale signs that I see. I hope that in future product releases, they allow for complete control over noise reduction and sharpening. I would also be curious to see apple log compared to what Motion Cam is able to do on something like an S23, since CinemaDNG allows for that complete control over NR/Sharpening and even allows for some (kinda fake but useable) expanded dynamic range using Davinci Resolve's highlight recovery. If Apple continues pushing this pro filmmaking, I really hope the rest of the industry follows and we get some momentum in this space.
Great presentation!
Great video - thanks!
Wow, great video and super informative
So I used to do a lot of photography and I had wanted to get into film making, had all the gear from a small rig caged Sony Alpha to rode mics, external monitors, DJI drones etc and I haven’t made a thing in about 2 years because of the fuss of the gear.
Bought a 15 Pro Max the other day just because I was long overdue an upgrade and I wanted the bigger screen.
I actually haven’t even used the camera yet!
Now I see how capable it is I think I might try get back into some kind of film making, I love how I can have the Blackmagic camera app set to the action button so I can just pull the phone from my pocket and immediately capture footage that looks like that.
I liked your technical approach to discuss about this insane new feature! It made me follow you, man!
If you could record some content about android phones, specifically the S23 or any android flagship cameras, it would be awesome! But using a third part app, like the motioncam, because it's just INSANE how this app can record bypassing the image processing
Well written script. Nicely done! 👏
Good video, gonna save up and get the 15 pro max in summertime when I go on holiday , excuse to buy one !
Just buy Sony Alpha full frame.
I just had to take the time and write this comment. This video was beautiful and beautifully explained! Wowwww, subscribed 😊
Great video and nice explainer.
Beautifully explained.
man your videos is so incredable, I'm jealous
Great video.I don’t fully understand everything but it sounds really interesting. I understand that the quality and the log recording is exactly the same (video quality I mean) between the stock camera app and the Black Magic app?
Log is certainly a great advancement here, but unfortunately if anyone is trying to achieve a perfect/controlled/intentional shot, the motion profile still seems to be getting in the way. Interested to see if using an ND filter & shooting at the correct shutter speed changes this. Currently everything that's in motion in this footage is too sharp in a clearly processed way with the possible exception of the low-light test footage. I'd be interested in seeing daylight footage with an ND filter & controlled/locked shutter speed at 1/2x the frame rate to get as close to 180 global shutter as possible.
The motion is ALWAYS a giveaway to me, 10x more than any color profile or tone mapping. Motion is arguably more important but still has yet to be addressed.
@@Sandurz 100% It still shows, but makes me wonder if we'd notice it less if this was taken in 60p then exported in 30
Blackmagic Camera may resolve motion issues by way of providing shutter speed control
There are MagSafe ND filter systems for iPhone, that’s all you need to fix shutter issues.
This. An internal digitally variable ND filter would be a killer in a phone
A keeper. Thanks for the excellent explainer. I understand from other vids that shutdown happens after just 3-4 min of ProRes LOG 4k/60p due to overheating. Did you encounter this while recording this video in LOG?
Very good script and delivery. This is high level content.
Thank you.
Damn. What a step up!
I dont understand any of this, but i enjoyed watching it
Thanks for sharing.
Dangggg, u caught me off guard when u said that ur A-Roll shot by apple log. Great stuff 👍
It really exceeded my expectations too! 😄
Something I find a little funny is that smartphones single handedly transformed video into a portrait orientation/vertical video content market after decades of landscape cinema footage... but every video I have seen on Apple Log so far (and that's quite a lot) has been almost all landscape/horizontal 🤣
It’s a weird new world
That's because all films are shot in horizontal, and we associate that format with high quality.
@@mrlightwriteralso, vertical footage is historically either for non consumer use like signage displays or specifically for social media and therefor perceived as less aesthetically “correct”
@@efraimkent Yes, that's right.
Great find! Valuable point too, as I’m usually getting grilled for filming horizontal. RIP vertical jk 😂
Wow, this is amazing
And to think that the new Keynote for MacBooks was shot indeed on iPhone 15 PM using black magic camera app in Log.... there is even the Behind The Scenes in Apples youtube channel. Crazy.
One of the main reasons I hated apples cameras was the post processing. And I'm glad to see that it can be removed at handled yourself.
This
Video
Is
Incredible
Fantastic video!
Very well explained. That's a follow from me.
The best explanation of apple log on iphone I've seen yet 🙏🏻 but how do you control focus. I'm aware that we have high f-stops and much depth of field, but still, how do we control focus on this device ? Regards Lars 🤔
Great video explaining Apple Log. Hard to believe you're a content creator from Malaysia. Malaysia boleh.
