    I admire your pragmatism on the power steering - didn't sound like an easy decision! As for 6 vs 12V; I would sacrifice originality for reliability on that one ;-)

      I learned to hate GM alternators thanks to the constant failures in my wife’s Chevrolet when we were first married, but lightly loaded and running cooler on a tractor, the ones I’ve inherited from previous owners have been fine.

    First off, very impressed by both this and the 1113 series. Your tractor do what you want but to me that vintage aftermarket PS setup was one of the cool unique things about this tractor/build along with that vintage aftermarket front end. I would hunt down a fan that clears or work out another way to get a bit more clearance but I don't own a bolt in it. Good work either way and keep 'em coming.

  • @hturbo1007

    Taking all of the power steering parts back off just because the aftermarket fan doesn't work with the setup. I would have just picked up a used fan at the salvage yard. Power steering on a wide front is nice to have.

    We were taught in trade school way back when that which ever way the rotor turns against spring pressure from the centrifugal advance is the direction the distributor turns. You turn the body of the distributor the opposite direction to the point where the points open which you can do with either a test light or an ohm meter of course with the distributor terminal unhooked and power off. When the light goes off or the ohm reading goes to infinity then you have it close. I like your way also. Basically the same process without using tools.

    • @iansyme3535
      @iansyme3535 3 роки тому +2

      I used to set my timing back in the days using a low wattage 12v bulb and connect across the points. When you rocked the distributor back and forward the bulb would flicker between on and off. Close enough for starting up a fresh engine! You can also use a multimeter to achieve the same effect, either looking for voltage or change in resistance. If you use the resistance method you do not even need to have a battery hooked up or indeed the coil.

Take crank fwd to position #1 should fire; w/meter/light on ign primary wire, advance distrib until light on/meter @ full batt voltage, done, snug distrib in position. I like the look of an original generator, too, but nothing can persuade me to go back to a 6 volt system, particularly in cold weather. I tried it with my H, but constant problems with resistance in every electrical connection, poor quality 6V regulators available today, and getting the feeling that 6V batteries are such orphans now that they also suffer quality and freshness problems...it wasn’t worth the maintenance and no-start days. The alternator is unseen on an M.
    At the current demands in a 6V system, voltage drop across unintended system resistances is killer. A fraction of an ohm here and there and the thing won’t start.
    Yeah, they started in 1945, but this was one area where quality was better. I remember the quality of mechanical regulators in the 60s versus today’s. Batteries are much better overall now, but not so sure about the 6-volts.

I did n't follow what the 3 amp diodes were for - certainly not battery charging - those alternators can put out 70 to 90 amps in some versions.
