what would be really cool is if powered off buildings were "harder to detect" like not exactly stealth mode, but powered on buildings have some noise / light so you can tell a bit from the distance that they're there.
ie in starcraft you can hear pylons being built or nyduses even if you cant see them; what if you can "hear" a busy proxied structure unless it's powered off.
I think one of the most interesting things is this race doesn't have a supply depot. Notice it says 0/300 right at the start. Crazy. I think there is some energy maintenance that replace the effort of making depots/pylons/overlords or whatever equivalent this game has for the other two races.
Yeah they basically have the power mechanic from command & conquer instead of supply/food from starcraft and warcraft, while still having the 300 cap.
And power banks cost 10 supply.
There have been several prominant RTS that have units which deal more damage the closer they are. Off the top of my head, almost everything in Company of Heroes 1/2/3 (technically accuracy), Peacekeepers in Red Alert 3, Shotgun scouts and suppression weapons in Dawn of War 2. There's probably way more. Artosis has very strong opinions about RTS but I get the feeling he has only really played Blizzard RTS and Age of Empires.

I will withhold my judgement on this game until they have all the final models and units in, but one thing I can say is that they showed it way too early.
I agree. In theory it sounds great to bring in feedback early. In practice you don‘t have the time to incorporate all the feedback and most importantly: mobs of people are stupid. There is nothing to gain from a mob but superficial comments and at worst negative press.
If they don't plan to rethink the visuals from the scratch they can't save this game from bombing. They need to have a talk with art director/concept artists. But these are full 3d models and not place holders so I don't think it's gonna happen (because it's gonna be a huge pain in the ass)

@@f1shze4lot I think the simple, cartoony maps influence the look some people aren't liking a lot more than the units. They should get a map editor in the hands of the community asap to see if people can make maps with different lighting, tile sets, and more detail that people might like better.
SC1 Terran units with abilities (9):
Bio: marine (stim), firebat (stim), medic (heal, optical flare, restoration), ghost (cloak, lockdown, nukes)
Mech: vulture (spider mines), siege tank (siege mode)
Air: wraith (cloak), science vessel (emp, irradiate, d matrix), battlecruiser (yamato)
SC1 Terran units without abilities (3):

I've never seen anyone rant about why almost every Terran unit has an ability, and yet it seems to be non-stop with stormgate. I think the key is giving units good abilities that are meaningful choices and situational trade-offs that add to gameplay.
I think it's more like stim, siege, cloak and spider mines are almost not "actual abilities", it's more like creative mechanics or something. Stim you mostly just press once on start of the battle. Vultures only get 3 mines and they're mostly only placed when you're not in battle. Yamato is slow and very expensive so you're left with ghost, vessel and situationally medic.
Protos as well, just HT, DA and Arbiter.
Zerg just Defiler and Queen which is almost never used, morph to guardian and lurker doesn't count. Devourer spores? Maybe?
SC2 is already to much imho, zealot charge, stalker blink, adept... I mean, can't a guy just attack move and do some basic micro? I would argue that charge makes zealots even less microable!
I like when they do abilities that you CAN use - but don't have to (and they don't make the unit totally useless if you don't use those abilities).
I’d consider valk splash to be its passive ability
the real reason is people want to hate this game and see it fail because they think it's a "ripoff" with "bad" art. They'll just invent any reason to hate on it.
All of these abilities are stupid gimmicks. Nobody is going to bother to remember what these dumb units do because it's so convoluted. Reminds me of Diablo 4. Garbage. Stim, mines, and siege mode are all incredibly iconic and easy to understand mechanics, in comparison.

The difference is, I am defending the expression of opinion from OP and in general, while you are trying to take away the opinion of his by patronizing him ("oh sweet child" "good luck finding"). Not tolerating intolerance is not the same as being intolerant in the first place.
The sounds as well for the celestials needs an overhaul.
Imo it's the most unique faction in this game. I see here most new and fresh ideas. So the Stormgate has three factions: Terran, Zerg/Protoss mix and a new one. I wish there were three new factions but at least this one is something new.
yea this game is honestly starting to shape up, i'm excited to play casual team games with friends and maybe try the 1v1 mode if they can balance everything correctly

Those flying buildings that can produce seem to have super high cheese potential! It will be hard to balance this race since they seem to rely on crazy spells and gimmicks

Cool theme for this race. Hopefully the art is iterated on quite a bit. I get that they're a small studio but the visuals do need work.
I made the comment before I got to the part where Artosis said that he plays on lower settings. I still think the visuals need a lot of work but it's also not fair to judge the game on low settings. That might be a good disclaimer for the beginning of the video though haha.
They raised and burned through nearly $40M. That's not exactly a small studio.
@@allanshpeley4284 Honestly I don't know their size so you have a good point. And even if they are small in number, their Blizzard ancestry has garnered them more cash than the vast majority of small studios out there.

Mechanics from W3 and SC´s, art from Valorant and HoT, history from a futuristic Diablo...
Love seeing some concepts from _Total Annihilation_ like building power toggles make their way in here.
I think this is my favorite race out of the 3 so far. Lets see what the other tier 3 units will be like

This game literally feels like they threw all unit abilities and units from SC and WC into a giant hat and just started pulling out stuff to create new units.

Screw the abilities, the entire interface is copied too. The top bar with abilities is such an obvious copy of SC2 LoV/coop ability bar. The entire supply system and resources. Even the map is basically Twisted Meadows from Wc3

@@marcinluter1195 Bro, no, those guys didn't design SC2. A lot of them worked at Blizzard, and on the SC2 team at the end, but the people that designed the game are not at Frost Giant. Sigity, Pardo, Metzen, Kim, etc are the ones behind Wings of Liberty. The Frost Giant guys are skilled and have a lot of great work in the past, but lets please give credit where it is due.

other than archon, broodlord, and collosus doesnt every other starcraft 2 unit have an ability. zerg can burrow and morph, terran has stim and mech transformations, protoss most have one small ability or are full spellcasters

@@oDrashiao Not really, look at current Battle Aces beta. It's actually done, everything is 100% playable and there is 0 placeholders. This is how beta should look like. And Stormgate looks for now just bad, there is a lot to do, they should public this later. Now Battle Aces > Stormgate in every single aspect, so this is their mistake.

The question that is most interesting to me is: what happens when you lose your flying main building thing (Arcstation)? Is it rebuildable or do you have to go on with what you have?

Lots of people are comparing the Celestials to the StarCraft factions, but more people need to talk about their similarities with C&C factions. It's like they tried to make a C&C style faction exist within a Blizzard RTS. I see the Celestials and think of a hybrid between Tiberium Sun Nod and Protos.
IDK if anyone has played the strategy game, Earth 2150, but the Celestials remind me of the Lunar Corporation faction from that game which was an incredibly unique faction in RTS games (it had no builder unit).
What bothers me the most in this game is the camera angle. It feels like the terrain is in a different angle than the units/buildings. It's like the lack of terrain features gives it an illusion of top view like GTA2 but the units are rotated too much (or some not at all) and they look like they are going to fall... I don't know how to explain it but it feels like something is off.

@@zygonovism WoL alpha looked "different" than the final product but the core of what the people liked about SC2 graphics was there. The unit looked cool and the engine, while not fully utilized, was showing off some of the stuff that it could do. Here, there's just nothing I enjoy personally. I guess it's made with the mobile market in mind.

Looks like one of those games theyd make up for an episode of Law and Order SVU. Ice T comes on and is like "Turns out all the students behind these mass r*ping sprees have been huge fans of this game, SpaceCraft" "Back in my day we just had Super Maario."
Stormgate has some interesting ideas. But this game is not rdy for mass consumption, and the intent to release this game july 30th is absurd. If it is released in this state, it doesn't matter how well designed it how, it will fail. This game is supposed to usher in a new era of rts and appeal to the masses. Well, the masses aren't gonna stick around for a game that screams, "placeholder"

there's really not a lot of things you can point to in sc2 that are unique to sc2 in anything other than implementation. The concepts are all VERY derivative. It's one of the genres that does that the most, similar to like mmos and shit. It's not even remotely an insult to the game and it's uneducated when you don't even know that what you're comparing it to "using" isn't even what created it originally lmao
this game might be pretty bad especially in modern gaming standards, we'll see. But let's stick to actual real reasons as to why, instead of playing 1 other game in our lives and using that to blindly template expectations lmaooooo

The graphics are final they have not set the shaders yet and anyone that's watched or played minecraft with a shader pack know how much of a difference that can make, but that will most likely only be done once they have all the character models are completed and in game. Most of the maps are just basic designs to serve their function. Alot of the people complaining about the maps being bare or looking bad didn't play sc2 WoL launch as the maps back them were crap before a lot of work went into them by a dedicated team at blizzard (for the reason of them being crap) and also the community to add texture and personality to the maps, stuff like reaper jumps, towers for overlords to chill on, and narrow openings at mains and natural bases(for protoss to wall cheaply) were standardized so I think we will see the same happen here once the community gets its hands on the map editor.
Who cares about graphics? It's all about the gameplay which looks interesting.
I was really hoping there would be 4 or more races total. Everything about frost giant's Celestrial reveal makes it look like this is the last race, which just makes it look like a SC2 knockoff

The game also has severe "not done yet, this is a placeholder" vibes everywhere. I think people are being a little too critical in that regard. That being said, I'm giving this game the same treatment I gave Halo Infinite, let it bake for 1-2 more years after "release" and play it once it's actually finished. Shame it has to be that way but that's the way things go these days.

Man these comments are something else, either mad cope or mad hate. Im pretty unconvinced about this game so far myself, but Im sticking with the wait and see approach. Hoping for the best but I wont be surprised or disappointed if it fails.
My general critiques so far is that it does look very generic and soulless. Units move rather slow over all, and even fairly small battles are messy and hard to follow, but I feel that way when I watch wc3 too because Im not that familiar with wc3 either so that might change once you familiarize yourself to everything.
What I like about sc2 is that even when the battles are insane, you have a feel for whos winning. Healthbars are easy to see, and once you get a hang of power levels of units, you can tell fairly quickly which side has the advantage. When I watch battles in stormgate, I have no idea whos winning. Healthbars are small and weirdly colored, units are damage sponges almost like in wc3 and there are so many things strange animations going on. Like the rolling zealots here, they roll in do splash damage, then start blinking and explodes. The "marine stalkers" that have bright blue fairly slow moving projectiles at first, and then slightly less bright orange projectiles. The infernal siege unit that has a massive and bright orange wind up animation and then has range like a siege tank, while also having white health at first, and then very hard follow solid red/blue healthbars.
I think this needs the classic green->yellow->red HP bars, especially since units here are fairly tanky compared to sc2.

Its just people that are tired of Starcraft, really. They would literally play any trash game including a game made in MSPaint if it meant they would relive the glory days of SC2 or BroodWar. They just crave another eSports phenomenon and this is why this game is gonna flop. Because it has nothing else going for it.

Honestly not impressed by the roster... We have basically Terran - which I think I like the most; basically Zerg, but Demon; basically Protoss, but called celestials (not in art).
For this army the abilities are kinda meh... Cabal mastery training being literally Banshee's Possession from WC3, which is also mastery training in WC3...
I withhold strong opinions on the graphics - very early, but it looks clayish, I hope that doesn't stay like that.
Overall Vanguard look like my guys so far, disappointed in the third race overall... Infernals for being demons have no models that feel badass, many other games have a better looking demon race... Celestials are kinda geometry shapes in the sky or whatever... meh

Mechanics seem fine, could make an interesting game, the graphics still need a lot of work obviously. I'd love if they had enough budget and worked on some cinematics, to me really brings out the game into a different light.

This game look like soulless starcraft with GFX from 2005..I expected a lot from this game and turn out to be a joke..Also i cant tell what are building and what are units for 3rd race is just to hard to differentiate..
As for gameplay for next gen RTS its insane that they are pushing basically most annoying part of SC2 free units and canon rushes (race that is base on building movement) bad design.

I can see that. The triangles are a throback to the very first Nintendo 64 use of 3D, where they would show raw triangles as shapes for wings, or a few pasted together for sqaures etc. They would look separated , as if the triangles were bonded together by a force field , and not a whole object. Very late 90's graphics vibes from this new race.
More Warcraft 3 level graphics IMO. Lots of annoying mechanics though for sure. The new angel protoss race has some super OP stuff, gonna get nerfed hard.
again, free games aimed at pubs don't die because chuds who can't accept change didn't get SC3.

This game legit looks like something 5 Dudes hacked together during a weekend game jam. I am not saying the gameplay is bad since I haven't played it, but its so rare that a game turns me off immediately just from looking at it. I am not a graphics guy either. It's wild how unpleasant this is to look at and listen to.
I don't see it, but Im also a reasonable human who knows it "being released" in beta for testing and a full "Realease" aren't the same thing, maybe temper your expectations like a normal human being instead of being caught up in the sheep baaaahing about something petty.
The devs went ahead and set graphics to low for maximum gameplay performance. Now that's thinking ahead.

@@kidB_81 Starcraft and Warcraft are considered the GOAT RTS games for a reason. Any RTS that doesn't replicate them in some shape or form is shooting itself in the foot. SC2 in particular has, bar none, the best UI in the RTS space. These games absolutely should be studied to understand why they work, and I'm really glad they're imitating solid, proven design.
Could they stand to be more original? Yeah, sure. But would this game appeal to dedicated RTS players if it didn't in some way resemble Warcraft III or Starcraft 1/2? Probably not. You'd probably see inverted comments of people asking or complaining why it isn't more like Starcraft or Warcraft when the devs are ex-blizzard.

As for the blizzard dev argument we keep hearing so much about, do I need to remind you that these guys arent the ones who created the great games like Starcraft broodwar and WC3. These are the guys that ruined Starcraft by making no-fun units like the Mothership core, the swarm hosts and the disruptors.
I used to believe in this game and I was on the hype train. Now the more I see it develop I couldn't care less about playing this game.

I mean, it's not about modern graphics, games like Nethack or original Master of Magic have better, less bland art direction. As of now this game looks like more boring, flavorless mix of wc3 and sc2

Complicated units with 100 abilities are TEDIOUS. It's like they never made SC1... where is the appreciation for simple but badass units like the hydralisk, the dragoon, the zergling. I can't believe I have no interest in this product whatsoever given that I am 100% the target audience.
hydras only good when it has the complex spell caster the defilier behind it, the dragoons just bad because it can't get past stairs or most the map, zerglings have always been too powerful and theirs 8 million takes on zerglings in RTS, even in this very game from what I've seen. You have no interest because you're done with RTS, move on mindlessly shitting on this game isn't going to give you what you want.
@@JerryS-zb2lf Hydralisk being a simple unit is what made the Defilers stand out as casters, having no ability helps the players (especially the casuals) shift their focus on controlling the more impactful caster unit. Dragoons' pathing issue and Zergling's balancing are not related to them having an unique ability or not.
Seems like this game is trying to be everything to everyone in the RTS space, I don't know if that's good or bad.

Pretty interesting race but the sounds that some of the units make drive me crazy (Kri and Vector specifically). I hope they will change it before the release. It's super annoying and only marginally better than hearing chalk scratching on a blackboard..

I understand this is a Blizzard style RTS. I didn't think it'd be a literal Blizzard RTS. i.e all Blizzard ideas regurgitated in a way that seems random. I think its time Frost Giant to go dark for a while and overhaul the art and design choices. I'd rather just watch SC or SC2 at this point.
then go back and play them, we know you'll be back here when its released its free so theres no reason not to try it.

They got blinders on and are loving the positive feedback and ignoring anything constructive/negative.

There is potencial here but it needs at least another full year of development.
The reason for early showings is they don't have blizzard money . Investers want to see progress and excitement .
Another year just to be competitively playable, and then at least one more year to polish, add skins, get minimum balance etc. They really showed off the alpha build this past few months.

This is kind of like a fusion of the big three of blizzard. I'm seeing the mechanics of Warcraft, the units of Starcraft, and the theming of Diablo. I think if they can deliver a good story then this would be a good start to a good series, and hopefully a second game with better better looks.

humans need a siege weapon, you have a tank, a ballista or a group of metal plates that says its not or the other two but its really just one of them in a different skin, you're mad that there are archetypes to units, this is core mechanics for an RTS, go play something you actually are interested in.

1) no they don't need it, there is no engine that won't let you create a faction that is human and without a siege weapon. You can literally be creative and think of anything

What makes siege tank specific and unique? That it has a mode where it is a tank and where it is artillery. Atlas in storm gate has the exactly same role, hybrid between artillery and a tank.
If you wanna talk about archetype, the archetype for artillery in games is that it is mostly active only when sieged, and does not operate as a tank mobile unit.
Therefore, this very unusual style of unit would remind one of siege tank a lot, because other RTS games don't use this hybrid archetype much.
On top of the faction having Terran aesthetics, terran marines, it even has a kind of a vulture, it has the wraith
Yes it can be the same archetype, but it is the shame that all 3 factions in Stormgate are exact same archetypes of factions with the same archetypes of untis as Starcraft 2, it is lazy and unexciting

exactly, it doesnt matter how good it is if it isnt better than starcraft and doesnt bring anything new to the table. Theyre making an RTS game, not a shooter, you cant just copypaste and expect to attract people, this genre is not popular enough for that kind of thing.
It feels like they put more emphasis on the story and graphics than the gameplay in every trailer and its still so generic. Angels and demons, "no one could have seen this coming", just epic jargon everywhere. If the lore is trash than the game probably doesnt need it in the first place.

I haven't been following Stormgate much, but if there's an Early Access in August, I have no hope for this game, simply because it looks like ass. How are we supposed to go from a completely polished game like sc2 to a game that looks like it was made 10+ years ago??

Their main focus is the editor and tech I guess and the art and art direction is just behind to avoid unnecessary cost if they have to redo assets. But then I believe for such a big announcement the models and the art for them should be on a better quality level. It's fine to show the community early development placeholder on reddit discord and in a playtest. Promoting it in this quality/progression will come with critic.

I found my favorite race. Up till now the other races seemed kinda boring to me, but these guys are cool. Them having an ability for just about everything is a good thing that separates them from the other factions. Morons complaining about it in the Twitch chat don't understand how immersive and interesting that makers the faction. And even though Arty has graphics set to "low", the game looks okay. Universe at War had a similar way of making the factions different, and I always appreciate that. God, I miss that game...
Frost Giant is just lacking the coolness factor that was oozing out of everything blizzard did in the 2000s.
