As someone who was in the frigate beta, the Celestials were nuts to wrap my head around. Their economy units, focus on flexible base building, and using power instead of supply felt radically different from the other two factions. I never managed to get comfortable with them, but but some people seemed to love their style.
I see a lot of people disliking the designs of thethid faction, but I personally like it. It feels the most like how I’d imagine old-testament angels to look, and the cabal sort of fitting the “biblically accurate design.” As for the toy part, I think that comes from the fact that they are shiny, don’t have too many “hard edges,” and that most units in the game don’t have their walking animation synced to their speed yet, from what I can tell. I think maybe making them a bit less shiny while making some of the edges more pronounced would fix most of the “looks like a toy.”
My immediate thoughts are: I like their gameplay! They look like toys. They are just the Protoss, more so a new commander for StarCraft 2 coop. The art direction is still forgettable. At this point the only thing I can congratulate Frost giant on is that gameplay wise they actually have a shot at retaining the casuals needed so the game doesn't die. On that front they have done a fantastic job. But we'll see if in the long term the standard hardcore fans are happy with that or not. On most other fronts Stormgate has just been bland as reinforced by the trailer, I am only here because of the blizzard pedigree and hoped they would use that to do something wildly different. But this is just starcraft 2 lite so far. Even the protag from the trailer is just a discount raynor!! I guess we can't really say for sure though until launch. I really do want this to succeed.
I feel like the blandness just doesnt come only from the units or buildings. For me personally its more the maps and the ground texture. Everything seems to be so washed out. Also it does not help, that everything is glowing light blue and shooting laser-y stuff from everywhere. If everything is glowing and highlighted, then nothing is highlighted at all. Then everything just feels the same.
I was more hopeful for the nature faction. It would also be interesting to see a "shadow faction", a second evil side that would represent not the forces of fire, but the force of cosmic darkness. But the angels... A little corny. However, let's see how this faction will be developed, maybe it will be interesting.
It's the de-facto standard: a good/progressive/tech-savvy faction (elves, eldar, protoss...), an evil/regressive/low-tech faction (orks, tyranids, zerg...), and humans in the middle as the vanilla choice (capable of good and evil, but ultimately pick up the torch of goodness from the failing eldar/angels/protoss). I agree it has become quite predictable by now. If the "nature" faction is good, it's going to be green, with leaves and furry mammals and sun/moon/stars symbols. If it's evil, it's going to be bugs, fleshy stuff, and a hivemind with no culture or symbols to speak of. Personally, I'd love to see a game where humans are the ultimate big bad, the main antagonist, real evil and real cruel. Or a eu-social, "Scandinavian social democracy" slugs'n'bugs faction with a balance between community and individual rights. Or a nature faction made up of crystalline/mineral creatures (non-carbon-based life). Or a "sentient space cloud" faction that act like space beavers: they grow Dyson spheres around stars that act like dams, but for light. It changes that star system and makes it uninhabitable for other races, but it's the only way they can live (and it's good for the flora and fauna that travel with them).

To be fair, StarCraft stole it all from W40k (terrans = space marines, zerg = tyranids, protoss = eldar). But W40k stole it all from Dune (a war against robots leads to ban on AI; telepathically gifted God-Emperor = Paul Atreides; mentats = tech priests; general themes like religion in space, failing states, astronavigation through telepathy, space drugs, etc. etc.). And the stuff they and everyone else stole from Tolkien has been stolen so much it doesn't even count as stealing anymore, it's just considered "generic fantasy tropes" (orks = orcs, eldar = elves, Empire without an Emperor = Gondor without a king...). And Tolkien has become so ubiquitous because he stole from Germanic and Celtic folklore... It's how culture works: 90% of "influenced and inspired by", 10% of tweaks and vaguely new stuff. When you're young, you're excited and think it's all so cool and original. I know I did the first time I pkayed StarCraft and WarCraft 2. Can we all agree that having straight up artificial AI that originated from humans as the third faction would have been super dope. Like the men of iron/gold, automatons or smth like that. The typical triad of angels, demons, humans is a bit disappointing.
Not particularly surprised considering the 2nd faction is basically "The Forces of Hell made a baby with Zerg", that the 3rd faction is basically "The Forces of the high heavens made a baby with Protoss". It is so very clear that this game is being designed by ex-blizzard developers. The blend between the 'Diablo' and 'StarCraft' oozes out of this game. It's not a criticism, but I do feel that it isn't particularly inventive.
