  • In 1999 Disney's Tarzan tree slid into the world with it's impressive animation and original songs by Phil Collins. But how has the movie held up and is it worth watching today? What's more, why is Tarzan forgotten by Disney? Why aren't there more games, shows or movies staring the hairless ape? And most importantly, Is Jane a Disney Princess?
    All of those questions and more will be answered in my review!

    I didn't mind the presence of two villains who never interact with each other. Seeing the movie as it is it might be jarring, as it might look like two different movies (one about Tarzan's origin and another about his first encounter with his own kind) but seeing it with the sequel TV show in mind we see that Sabor and Clayton are only 2 of many foes Tarzan fought.

    • @Lytane

      I think the nature of Tarzan lends itself to a series much more than a movie. With how many enemies he faces, all of the friends and adventures he has it's hard to just pick one or two and make that into a movie. And your right that the movie almost feels like two episodes of a show with how they are presented.

    • @Alejandroigarabide
      @Alejandroigarabide 3 роки тому +2

      @@Lytane Indeed. I haven't read them yet, but it's easier to have the sci-fy of Pellucidar and the fantasy of Opar as different adventures.
      Too bad Disney never made good sequels. Only a pointless mid-quel and a compilation of 3 episodes disguised as a movie.

    • @bradleybourgeois4710

      It makes sense in the context of the movie though. The first half is Tarzan's struggle to be one with the jungle, which he has a hard time doing because he's human, while the second half is based on Tarzan's relationships between his human friends and Gorilla family. Besides Sabor's defeat is meant to be akin to a right of passage to Tarzan. Sabor is more of an obstacle and threat rather than a character, while Clayton is a character first and a threat second.

    This tarzan is only one of many.
    This tarzan is a bit different, but nonetheless epic and awesome. Not to mention grief and dark too.
    Its TV sequel series are part of larger world even magic there(frozen connection)

      It is a visually stunning movie with good acting and a good story but it broke from the traditional Disney mould. The songs are not as easy to sing along to as our heroes don’t sing them. And I do still feel like it’s two movies, one with Sabor and the other with Clayton.
      I like it though and think it’s a great film

      @@Lytane But that's not really an argument. Tarzan breaks the Disney Mold by trying something new, why is that something negative? That's something very positive. Watching the same formula for an entire decade is exhausting. Tarzan's whole point is to find a place where he gets accepted, which at the end isn't necessarily Jane. She's just a human like him, so they have a lot in common, but he gets acceptance through Kerchak accepting him as the leader and protector of the tribe and Tarzan accepting himself as the way he is. That the Songs are sung by Phil Collins instead of Tarzan isn't a bad thing. Tarzan is a character that's actually not capable to speak or sing, he is Only speaking gorilla language, that's it, so making him sing would be not logical at best and ridiculous at worst. The Songs and the whole soundtrack are a great piece of art, yeah it serves to set a certain tone, but that's exactly what every Disney Song does. And to understand what the stakes, the struggles, the needs and the wants for Tarzan are you don't need an "I Want Song" as previous Disney Movies had. The only song that's just random fun is the camp noice song. The having two Villians with Clayton and Sabor the leopard also isn't a bad thing. The leopard is alive for round about 20 Minutes of the movie, so it's extremely obvious that this leopard is not the main Villian at all. But both the leopard and Clayton share one big aspect, both are at their core greedy predators who don't have a problem with harming others to get what they want, so actually that's a good contrast between those two.

    So back when the movie came out Rosie O'Donnell had her talk show which my family would watch while we were eating supper.
    She was super excited to be cast as Terk being a huge fan of both musicals and Disney movies. THEN she found out about Phil Collins doing all the songs himself and, according to her, more or less insisted they include "Trashing The Camp " so that she'd get a chance to sing in a Disney film.

    • @Lytane
      @Lytane  Рік тому +1

      Oh wow, so that absolute bop of a song was just so she could say she's sung in a Disney film?! That's pretty crazy and cool and I'm glad they went with that song, it's so good.

    It's unbelievable how good its sequel TV show is. For some reason it's not on Disney+, even if the 2 mediocre DTV sequels are.
    After your awesome reviews of the Aladdin saga, I'm happy to see you'll soon check the Tarzan TV series out.
    EDIT: In hindsight, maybe the Disney+ thing is a licencing issue, but that doesn't explain why the 3 movies are avaiable.

    • @Lytane
      @Lytane  3 роки тому +1

      I know right! I've finished watching it and (spoiler) thought it was quite good. Much better than Tarzan 2. Also, thanks for the Aladdin praise, those videos were the most stressful and fun things I've ever made hahaha
      I'm not sure why it's not on Disney+ I can't see anything that's in the show that wouldn't be allowed. Oh actually I can, they use a lot of ideas from the other books and maybe there is the issue. With Tarzan and Jane not using book elements it can get away with it. It's so stupid but Disney seems content to forget about this series.

      @@Lytane Too bad indeed. It's a really underrated show. I specially like how the episode "The Outbreak" starts as a normal environmental PSA but then becomes a layered story with a complex antagonist who actually sees the error of his ways; or the horror-esque vibes of "Tublat's revenge"; and how they turned "The visitor" from a normal clipshow into a heartwarming story that I personally like to place as the last in the series, as it was aired out of order.

    • @Lytane
      @Lytane  3 роки тому

      The Outbreak is probably my favourite episode of the series! I loved the complexity and the antagonist. I also really liked the 2 part episode. I'm currently editing the video on the TV show and mention all three of those episodes. Though Tublat's revenge I mostly rant about how the show is out of order hahaha
      I also think The Visitor is the final episode, as the one after that is just the pilot and "Season 2" is the movie episodes.
      I wish they made a better sequel movie but too bad and we will never see anything else from Tarzan unless Disney decides to buy back the rights.

    Tarzan (1999) turns 25!
    The 6th highest grossing film of 1999 making $170 million domestically
    $448.2 million worldwide against a $130 million budget
    I have such fond memories, my most anticipated movie of that summer
    Listened to the read along and saw that sneak peek with Disney movie surfers on the Mulan vhs
    My first real introduction to Phil Collins (had no idea he was British)
    Listened to the soundtrack non stop in the Adirondacks, I remember we saw it in inlet and again with my late mom
    It was one of the last handrawn animated features of the Disney renaissance era
    It remains an essential part of my childhood, I knew what to expect and it delivered thanks to directors Kevin Lima and Chris Buck
    A great voice cast of Minnie Driver, Lance Henriksen, Glenn Close, Wayne Knight, Rosie O' Donnell, and Tony Goldwyn
    There's a hint of difference of culture and lifestyle here, a life one leads and the one they could, we can all be the same no matter the differences, acceptance, family can be both traditional and non-traditional
    The narrative themes of family are sprinkled throughout too
    There's amazing cgi when it comes to the swinging and tree surfing
    All the voice actors match their distinct personalities giving them believability
    Tarzan learns what it means to be ape and man altogether
    Jane is an example of a damsel in distress done right because she's actually very interesting
    She is from the Victorian era and pulls more weight the more the film goes on
    Fantastic action sequences as well
    Say what you will about Phil Collins but he really brought his A-game to these songs, they're all so catchy
    Mark Mancina's score is a treasure being very sweeping in each scene illustrating the wonder and danger of the jungle world
    I pretty much had the whole film nailed down to a tee but I still loved every part of it; it has stunning visuals, comedy, romance, pitch perfect pacing, and a great balance of emotion with memorable characters
    The concepts and mature themes like exploration remain so relevant now as they did back then
    Can't believe it lead to a dvd sequel, a Broadway musical, a tv series even an ice dance show
    I'm very happy Kingdom Hearts featured a video game level too!
    This is a great new take on a classic character being very imaginative and remains one of the great final peaks of Disney animation after all this time
    Nostalgia Critic did not like Rosie o Donnell as Terk or Phil Collins singing saying it does the film a disservice
    He actually preferred the South Park movie song better which lost the Oscar and even the show made fun of Collins himself
    Yet he found the struggles Tarzan goes through interesting, the action scenes pretty fun, and the characters being cool if not memorable

    I too used to call Sabor a jaguar before I learned she was a leopard (though to be fair, she does look rather jaguar-ish, what with a leopard's spots being smaller than a jaguar's in real life). It also took me a while to realize that Terk was female.

    Maybe what they should do if they decide to do a Disney live action remake of Tarzan. They should make it a musical so all the characters can sing their own songs. It should be 3 hours and 15 minutes so that way there be plenty of action, adventure and singing scenes in the movie. They should have Queen La in this live action remake and have her be played Estelle who voiced Garnet in Steven Universe. Her character would be exactly the same as the one in Disney Legend of Tarzan where she has her magic staff and is the queen of opar. A live action Tarzan remake would be cool especially if they turned it into a musical, well more of a musical than the original.
      I think Queen La would make for a good antagonist , would you have her work with Clayton or be a seperate evil? I think it would be fun to see some of the Tarzan villains working together for once.
      But I don’t think it will happen due to the Tarzan copyright. Unless Disney buys all of Tarzan (which they love doing so it may happen) they wouldn’t make another Tarzan film which sucks!

      If they do, they have to be really careful with it. Like was said on the video, Disney would need to get a renewed license for him. Then, they’d need to find a director who honestly (at least in my opinion) loves Tarzan movies and books. Let me explain. If Disney gets a director who doesn’t really care too much about Tarzan (the original from the books from Edgar Rice Burroughs or the movies that followed the books) he/she will probably not get the character right or give the character and story the love it deserves. Another thing would be how to work Tarzan in real life. Would he move like he did in the live action movies from the 20th century? Would he move like the Tarzan from the Disney movie? Would he move like the Tarzan from The Legend of Tarzan? There’s a lot of things to take into account. However, I would love to see a live action movie, again, done right.

A lot of Tarzan is in the Public Domain (but not all of it) so maybe they thought they could pull a sneaky and get it for free later. The Disney movie avoids the obvious racism of the story by never showing Tarzan interact with African people.
