Phil Collins songs really got me invested in the movie and he even sang in spanish for the latin american dub. Tarzan was one of my favorite childhood movies, especially for the action and the great ost.
If you watch the behind the scenes for Tarzan, the way he moves through the trees is in fact based on kids on rollerblades and skateboards. Plus in Tarzan Untamed, he does ride a piece of bark to surf on a river and waterfall and a tree vine attached to a bird like water ski's.
In defense of the Phil Collins songs: the style feels disconnected, but the lyrics are definitely not. I really liked them, I felt that the lyrics complemented the scenes appropriately. The lyrics are so specific that the songs don't work as standalone pop hits: "You'll be in my heart" barely did it... it is so descriptive of the parent/child situation (uncommon in pop) that its use in other contexts sounds forced.
Best thing from Disney's Tarzan I love as a kid was Phil Collins. His songs were part of my childhood and I will hold onto his songs with all my heart.
I grew up with the band Genisis My dad had the tape that played a lot. As i grew up i realized that phil and genisis were the same. Then Tarzan came into being and Brother bear I love Phil Colins he was my whole childhood so i hate to say it i loved his songs here but again that's because my dad was big fan
I see the edit there, when the critic shoots tarzan he actually edited that tarzan would shoot first and he would move his head slightly to the left and then shoot him later, worth the re edit
*Critic:* "He should be singing instead of silently working through his emotions." *Also Critic:* "There shouldn't be singing! Its so much better to see him express his emotions silently."
He's talking about characters singing about their emotions as per a traditional musical theatre rather than pop songs overlay, which are good but it's not the type of musical storytelling that Disney specialises in as seen from previous movies. The second point is completely unrelated. He's just highlighting how well the animation and score go together in that scene that it was best not to have a pop song interfere there.
The disconnect of the songs actually plays well with the visuals. Much like Starlight Brigade, the lyrics _can_ fade into the background without loosing anything, but they also compliment the story being told. You get the best of both worlds and can focus on whichever you enjoy more at the time. Average lifespan of a leopard is 12-17 years with the oldest pushing early 20s. So no. That is definitely not the leopard that ate/killed his parents. That "sequel" is just 3 episodes from the animated series that came from this film. It was a lot of fun and explored a variety of topics from ethics to the benefits and dangers of technology. Heck, there was even some crazy magic sorceress at one point.
I think the movie that did the best with having the songs play in the background is Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron, because in that movie, the horse never talks, so the songs convey his emotions without him actually singing them, and I think it worked great
I’d say Clayton is way more memorable, for his demeanour and determination, he definitely has way more personality than Governor Radcliffe or the villain from Oliver and Company, you have to admit!
This movie was the catalyst to me becoming a life long Phil Collins fan. It was one of the first Disney movies I ever saw in theaters (I was nearly 5 when the movie came out), and the music was what struck me the most, especially "You'll Be in My Heart". Brother Bear amplified that. When I was a teen, I started hearing more of Phil's solo stuff and his Genesis era stuff. My one regret is that I couldn't afford to see him perform live before he retired. Hope he's happy and doing well. On a side note, as a long time watcher of Doug/the Critic, I'm extremely happy to see all the positive love for Phil in the comments. Glad to know I'm not alone! (edit: Also, I absolutely dread the day Disney even considers possibly making a live action adaptation of this film. I hope they NEVER do, this is a great, beautifully animated film that doesn't deserve such a poorly done remake.)
God i can't believe its been 25 years since this film came out I remember watching this alot on VHS renting from the library I was 4 years old now im about to be 29 in August I miss the good old days
I actually remember seeing the movie in theaters when I was 3 and once the movie was over and me and my parents were walking out of the theater I started singing You’ll Be In My Heart on the way to the car.
I probably said it before with your original review, but that edit of Jane, the Professor and Clayton searching was absolutely perfect with Clayton randomly firing. It was hilarious then and still is.
There are so many great points to your review, but the part that will stick out the most because it almost killed me with laughter is when they shoot Phil Collins out of the tree. That edit is gold. I could have that on a loop for the rest of my life.
7:50 I'm glad you said this and I think it weirdly humanizes you a lot. People can forget how being on a screen takes away a lot of humanity and to have something to relate to you over on such a profound level is a unique experience for this particular series.
Honestly Tarzan has some of the best animation of the Disney Renaissance and it's not even just because it's technically the newest. The technicality behind the character animation is stellar
About Rosie O'Donnell's performance actually making the dialogue for Terk worse, I 100% agree. Her voice was dubbed over for the Playstation 1 game on this movie, and the dubbing actress's performance was so much better!
Fun fact: Cats don't just kill for food, they kill for the fun of it. This applies to wild cats too. Also, I was probably an adult by the time I noticed there were bodies next to those bloody footprints. Another fun fact, Those swinging vine scenes were modeled by Tony Hawk himself. 8:25 - I saw another Tarzan review, make this complaint too and yeah I agree, In a movie where "baby monkey lead an entire troop with an umbrella and a boot on his head, a germophobic elephant, and gorillas making jazz destroying a camp" a man singing as he swings thru the vines will not seem out of place. 22:07 Honestly, though, I would prefer this kind of censorship to happen on Facebook, as it has become increasingly unhinged with its video content. I grew up with this movie, I was probably 7 years old when I watched this film for the first time, and I enjoyed it, and I will say the Phil Collins songs were awesome to me, I can see how they may not fit in the movie, but they were awesome to me, especially the end-credits versions of them.
Disney Audiences: "Why do you always do the dead mother cliche in your stories? Do something new!" Disney: "Something new? Okay! We'll do a CHILD's death...followed by a mother's AND father's death! Is that NEW ENOUGH for 'ya?"
I know nostalgia it's a big part of it, but I always love how the songs were handled in this movie, for me it was always clear that the lyrics were Tarzan inner thoughts, so in a way, he is still the one who is singing. This middle ground between a musical and a movie with a regular score works amazingly for me 😁 (And it was equally amazing with "I'm still here" by Jim Hawkins in treasure planet).
you have to remember youtube is now a magical place where death does not exist, also thier logic baffles me they are trying to make this site more child friendly even though youtube kids is something that already exists.
THAT was the reason they age restricted your review???? Omg what have youtube become.... It was fun to see the review again and still think you gave some good points on what is good and bad about the movie. I did'nt really hate phills music, but what you showed indeed works waaay better. Good review
I have two things to say this is the Tarzan I think of whenever I hear the word Tarzan and to me there's only three good Phil Collins songs in this movie son of man, Two Worlds one family, and Strangers Like Me
This movie will remain in my personal top 5 especially for the music. I am glad beyond believe that I am in a choir with a conductor who made a medley from all of these songs and I get to sing it on a semi regular basis. It was the song that got me into it.
Phil Collins went really hard on the soundtrack (as well as he did on Brother Bear), most of the orchestral score was also done with Phil and Mark Mancina. According to his autobiography, Phil didn't want to sing the songs either and it was a director's decision to have him included in the onscreen soundtrack for the reason you gave. Lion King had the exact same going on, with some exception. Circle of Life, Can You Feel the Love Tonight aren't sung by the characters either and nobody bats an eye. It was just trendy to bash on Phil Collins at the time. Circle of Life was still a hit on the charts when Elton sang it. I'm not sure why they couldn't do the same for Tarzan. They're mostly bangers, except Trashin' the Camp.
While the “sequel “ goes into more detail about Tarzan’s childhood identity emo-ness, the tie in cartoon series gets to explore the characters and their relationships more, even introducing some great stand alone and recurring characters. It’s worth checking out if you wanted more exploration into the world they created.
No way was that the same leopard that killed Tarzan's parents. There has to be well over 10 years between the parent killed and it killed. If nothing else Tarzan might have killed it's child or grandchild.
You know it's saying something when a violent death from a G-rated film originally got this age-restricted. And yet Wish got a PG for jackshit. RATINGS ARE A JOKE.
Always thought this was an underrated DRen film, and actually put it up there with the best of them. My only problem with it is really Rosie O Donnell. I think it was time to move away from traditional musicals, and the montages really worked for me. The animation is top notch. The opening and jaguar battle are amazing. Emotional moments are very well done. I actually think Jane has tons of personality, and is my favorite Disney supporting significant other (Beast doesn’t count). Even the villain is fine, especially given the hero had so much going on he didn’t need that direct an antagonist. I’d put this leagues above Mulan, Herc, Hunchback and Pocahontas, though all of them are good in their own ways.
So maybe I was an unobservant child, or my eyes couldn't distinguish colors, but my siblings and i didn't see that hanging shadow for years! We got the vine snapping, and thought that was it😅
It’s possible you and your siblings may have gotten the censored version of the scene. My DVD of Tarzan had that scene edited where you couldn’t see the shadow at all (though I still knew what happened since they showed Clayton screaming and clutching the vines on his neck as he fell).
Everything from expectation to execution to memorability (for good AND bad) I totally agree with you here on. There’s a part of me that wants to rewatch it with my wife (we were both 14-15 when this movie came out, on the verge of Disney 2000) but I honestly don’t want to sit through the Rosie O’Donnell parts. I’m DEAD serious, it’s SO cringey and awful, my ears and eyes are like “oh dear…(fades to black)”.
Still one of my favorite Disney movies, and one of my favorite films in general. The animation is amazing, the characters fun, the music insane, and to this day, I have yet to see another Tarzan film that holds a candle to it. Disney's Tarzan is, in my opinion, a perfect film.
The part where Sabor pounces the baby gorilla offscreen and Kerchak stops himself and Kala because he realizes it’s too late is, to date, one of the most terrible things to watch that Disney has put out. Very dark, very scary, and very heartbreaking.
Clayton is voiced by Brian Blessed, who pretty much is one of the most badass people to ever live. Listen to his story about how he got an orangutan to captain a boat by doing his Boss Nass sounds and there are a ton of other awesome things he did too.
Phil Collins sang the songs in 5 different languages, one of them being german. To be honest, he did an impressive job. I love these songs so much and sing them to this day in his american accent. 😄
It's been a while since I verbally (libally?) Appreciated the energy Doug puts into the ads. I can't skip them because despite it being a bad script forced by the company, I want to see the bit.
11:37 "Vine swinging's a little dangerous. Vine SURFING is much cooler" - George Jr from George of the Jungle 2 So I think "surfing" is what I would mostly call what Tarzan is doing while he's moving along the slopey tree branches of the jungle.
8:09 While I'm not a big fan of the Phil Collin's songs since they seem just inserted in there , I will say that I think two of them fit pretty well with where they put them. Son of man, and Strangers Like Me.
We (my mother and I) watched the Tarzan sequels last week and right after I just had to listen to the original Phil Collins soundtrack because, oh my God, that is half the film for me.
I kind of agree with the director about steering away from making Tarzan musical but disagree with the idea that throwing Phil Collin's songs on top is the better solution; just use instrumentals instead.
I respect your opinion, you’re 1 kajillion percent wrong. The music is amazing in this movie. I played “you’ll be in my heart “ at my wedding. This is my favorite Disney movie

Phil Collins songs really got me invested in the movie and he even sang in spanish for the latin american dub. Tarzan was one of my favorite childhood movies, especially for the action and the great ost.
I think he also sang the songs in Italian and german
@@thegreatherox and french

The Disney Renaissance Era started on great note and ended on a great note.
Son of Man was the film’s best song, and it’s not even close. I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL!!!
Full agreement my friend
Although I have always had a strong spot, for 'Strangers like Me'...
You'll be in my heart was the clear winner 🎉
I will die on that hill with you!
Phil Collins sucks! On a movie soundtrack or on radio, he sucks in every way!
*When Tarzan faces the leopard.*
Tarzan: "I am Tarzan, Prince of the Apes. You killed my parents. Prepare to die."
Best thing to start off a new week of a new month then watching a good ol' Nostalgia Critic review.
Best thing from Disney's Tarzan I love as a kid was Phil Collins. His songs were part of my childhood and I will hold onto his songs with all my heart.
Agreed. The first thing I think of when I remember the movie.
😂
(17:33-17:53) I totally agree with Mr. Walker on this because (me personally) it makes the character more lovable
I actually love some of the music here and thought the silent man made sense. Tarzan did not know art, so him being musical doesn't make sense.
*Critic:* "He should be singing instead of silently working through his emotions."
*Also Critic:* "There shouldn't be singing! Its so much better to see him express his emotions silently."
I interpreted it more as "if you must have singing, let the characters do it".
21:13 the score is also pretty phenomenal. It conveys the emotions so well.
I know!! Did you also know the same guy who worked on the score for this movie also worked on the score for Moana?!
@@Wickedfan219 makes sense.
10:43 This part always kills me. I just die laughing with how well its edited.
22:14 is the reason it got age restricted in the first place.
Your shitting me
It's a shame that had to be re-edited for UA-cam but to quote Jeffrey Tambor's character from Hellboy 2: The Golden Army: "God, i hate UA-cam."
It's from a kids movie
No wonder every passing generation gets more sensitive. Kids are so sheltered that they're a sensitive liberal by the age of 12.
@@Wickedfan219 That is a great song though I love two worlds that's my banger that stuck through my childhood growing up the most
I probably said it before with your original review, but that edit of Jane, the Professor and Clayton searching was absolutely perfect with Clayton randomly firing.
It was hilarious then and still is.
Also, I got to admit. As a 90's kid, Tarzan was my intro to Phil Collins.
90's kid and you learned about Phil Collins this late?
I mean man was all over the 90's
Can you please tell us what stock music you used during that music critique? The stuff playing at 9:30?
The characters reacting to the Phil Collins song would be so dang funny 😂
Disney Audiences: "Why do you always do the dead mother cliche in your stories? Do something new!"
Disney: "Something new? Okay! We'll do a CHILD's death...followed by a mother's AND father's death! Is that NEW ENOUGH for 'ya?"
"...Damn! You're hardcore, Disney!"
Disney: "You're damn straight we are!"
I know nostalgia it's a big part of it, but I always love how the songs were handled in this movie, for me it was always clear that the lyrics were Tarzan inner thoughts, so in a way, he is still the one who is singing. This middle ground between a musical and a movie with a regular score works amazingly for me 😁 (And it was equally amazing with "I'm still here" by Jim Hawkins in treasure planet).
yay, he remembered to call it a leopard and not a cheetah this time 😅
the animation with the leopard fight is still good to this day, gives me goosebumps
UA-cam took offense to Clayton's death? Really?
you have to remember youtube is now a magical place where death does not exist, also thier logic baffles me they are trying to make this site more child friendly even though youtube kids is something that already exists.
THAT was the reason they age restricted your review????
Omg what have youtube become....
It was fun to see the review again and still think you gave some good points on what is good and bad about the movie.
I did'nt really hate phills music, but what you showed indeed works waaay better.
Good review
I have two things to say this is the Tarzan I think of whenever I hear the word Tarzan and to me there's only three good Phil Collins songs in this movie son of man, Two Worlds one family, and Strangers Like Me
I remember myself 7 years old and being confused by Clayton's death. At the time I didn't know what death by hanging meant.
Fun Fact: The same author who made Tarzan also made John Carter of Mars
This movie will remain in my personal top 5 especially for the music. I am glad beyond believe that I am in a choir with a conductor who made a medley from all of these songs and I get to sing it on a semi regular basis. It was the song that got me into it.
Fun fact: the artist actually studied skateboarders in line skaters for Tarzans tree sliding scenes
One re-edit later reminds me that UA-cam’s becoming so damn finicky what they want submitted.
25 years later and this movie still looks just as good if not better than what is made today
You ARE nuts about the orchestral score. Felt like a trailer for a Civilization game with your edit
Exactly that ruined that whole video LMAO. Hell to the no. At-least he’s somewhat self aware
While the “sequel “ goes into more detail about Tarzan’s childhood identity emo-ness, the tie in cartoon series gets to explore the characters and their relationships more, even introducing some great stand alone and recurring characters. It’s worth checking out if you wanted more exploration into the world they created.
Stand-alone characters like 'Ed.'
Too bad the series isn’t on D+
One of the only Animated Series of a Disney Movie I greatly enjoyed besides _Aladdin: The Animated Series._
No way was that the same leopard that killed Tarzan's parents. There has to be well over 10 years between the parent killed and it killed. If nothing else Tarzan might have killed it's child or grandchild.
18:50
*That's what I've been thinking for years 😂😂*
Phil Collins is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. These songs will forever be in my heart.
Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about. I love the songs in this movie.
Still one of my favorite Disney movies, and one of my favorite films in general. The animation is amazing, the characters fun, the music insane, and to this day, I have yet to see another Tarzan film that holds a candle to it. Disney's Tarzan is, in my opinion, a perfect film.
4:14 THAT BOY FROM HOME ALONE 3 IS TARZAN?????
his feet must be really ruff every time I see him tree surfing it makes my feet hurt
The part where Sabor pounces the baby gorilla offscreen and Kerchak stops himself and Kala because he realizes it’s too late is, to date, one of the most terrible things to watch that Disney has put out. Very dark, very scary, and very heartbreaking.
There is no "other version" of Tarzan. THIS IS TARZAN. Everything different is just a lesser re-imagening.
Phil Collins' songs in Tarzan are GREAT! The only song that was bad was regrettably, (sigh) "Messing up the Camp" by *NSYNC.
It's been a while since I verbally (libally?) Appreciated the energy Doug puts into the ads. I can't skip them because despite it being a bad script forced by the company, I want to see the bit.
I actually like the gorilla song sequence and thought Terk and the elephant were fine.
11:37 "Vine swinging's a little dangerous. Vine SURFING is much cooler" - George Jr from George of the Jungle 2
So I think "surfing" is what I would mostly call what Tarzan is doing while he's moving along the slopey tree branches of the jungle.
The Randy Newman impression of prince of Egypt was utterly hilarious 😂
Doug is getting stale
Utterly hilarious? Can I get some of that strain? Mine ain't making any of this "utterly hilarious".
tarzan: *holds the knife* my name is inigo montoya, you killed my father prepare to die
8:09 While I'm not a big fan of the Phil Collin's songs since they seem just inserted in there , I will say that I think two of them fit pretty well with where they put them.
Son of man, and Strangers Like Me.
Son of Man and Strangers Like Me are my favorite songs
16:45
Really long Ad break ends.
Love Phil Collins' music contributions to Disney. Tarzan AND Brother Bear
Say whatever you want about her, but i think she did a good job with Terk.
We (my mother and I) watched the Tarzan sequels last week and right after I just had to listen to the original Phil Collins soundtrack because, oh my God, that is half the film for me.
9:31 WHAT'S THE MUSIC???
12:36 I realize he did both movies from the phantom menace and Tarzan since, 1999.
