Feels wild to me how every console carried a big rebrand for crossover/spinoff titles until the Switch. N64 put Peach's Castle everywhere, Sunshine's alumni and Isle Delfino were all over the GCN, and while more subtle, I'd argue that there are hints of Galaxy throughout the Wii Era. In the 7+ years since Odyssey, I don't think I've seen anything. None of the cute sugar skull guys, no Cappy, like Mayor Pauline now I GUESS, and CERTAINLY no prize ceremonies in New Donk City.
Yeah I always found that weird, even the WiiU Mario spinoffs had some 3D world and Galaxy 2 influence in them. Most of the Mario spinoffs on switch theming wise are just NSMB and maybe some 3D world but no odyssey besides Pauline
YES. THIS EXACTLY. I got my Switch pretty late into the console’s lifespan; and yet, despite being a lifelong _Mario_ fan, I have virtually no interest in _Odyssey_ because its legacy is non-existent. Nobody remembers Cappy, Tiara, or the Broodals. What’s even the point of getting to know them in the first place?
odysseys had far more influence in switch era than 3d land, world or the new super games in Wii U era. u have new donk in smash and pauline in the Mario karts, tennis, and golf
@@Julian-um2ombesides pauline and I think cappy as part of one of mario's taunts, I don't think any other characters has shown up in stuff like, mario parties or anything. Not even as background characters! Plus you could argue this rendition of Pauline is from Mario vs Donkey Kong anyways and isn't an odyssey specific reference
In retrospect, it's hard to believe that 8 released without Bowser Jr and that it took until 8's final DLC to even get Diddy Kong. Also weird that it for as important as he is, Kamek's been in as many titles as Paratroopa. Though I will say it's cool that the Switch revived Pauline, and for as underwhelming as the Switch spinoffs have been, we get 1-2 wacky picks minimum
You missed a couple of obscure snes spinoffs, like Excitebike: Bun Bun Mario Battle, a Japanese exclusive snes remake of Excitebike that features Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario as playable characters. There’s also Wrecking Crew '98, a competitive multiplayer wrecking crew game. It features some standard Mario characters, like Mario Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and Koopa, some wrecking crew characters, Foreman Spike and Eggplant Man in his only playable appearance, but also some absolutely wild picks, like Onigiri, a living ball of rice, and Oyazi, a middle aged Japanese man who is possibly drunk. Cool stuff. Edit: There’s also the Mario Kart arcade games, which feature Pac-Man characters, as well as Don-Chan from Taiko no Tatsujin(he’s a drum) and a Tamagotchi.
I love Mario Sports Mix so much, I remember being 7 years old and not knowing at all what dragon quest was so I thought every character in the game was just a Mario characters including the Behemoth, till years later I learned what dragon quest was.
There's only one character who could defeat Rosalina's tyranny... Honey queen. She was the other queen of the galaxy introduced into mario sports spinoff, alongside rosalina. But she was hated by everyone, while rosalina was loved and praised. Honey queen was banned from the mushroom kingdom, she's now just chilling in her galaxy with the bees. But she's the only one who could match the power of rosalina, after all both of them are queens of the galaxy. But why would she help the people who rejected her ? Because unlike rosalina she's not evil ! If the entire mario community call for her help, i'm sure she'll help us fighting the blue demon that we call rosalina.
Awesome video, but I feel there were good picks in the Switch era you unfairly skipped over, like Ninji, Charging Chuck, Pom Pom, King Bob-omb, and especially Pauline.
Are we not gonna point out the fact that it took until the Switch Era for Pauline to be playable? It took 3 Decades! That is a long ass time especially when you consider that she is also the oldest Mario Character next to Donkey Kong! I can see why in not Super Mario Kart cause she looks similar to Peach during that in time 1992 until 1994 with her new redesign.
Really happy that Coney rocks with you, I was here before he made that first reaction video but it makes me insanely happy someone like you gets the recognition you deserve! Good ass vid Carlito 🐐

I made a fan roster with every Mario Kart driver playable (Funky Kong's DK64 looks like a stand-in for adult Donkey Kong Jr.). I needed to have 8 weight classes to have enough space for everybody. There were still 8 Feather or Lightweights I wanted to use, but I decided to call it quits because I was having trouble thinking of more charters for the other weight classes.
Alot of people don't know this but Donkey Kong Jr Is actually the current Donkey Kong we see. And the Donkey kong from the arcade games is actually kranky Kong when he is still young.

Nice video dude, it will take me a while to finish it but so good so far, one thing I want to say is that you can say shit about 3 of the 4 regular dudes from Tennis 64, but Plum my beloved deserves a comeback, idk why but i really liked her design and that render she has screams Mario character to me, if anything it could be cool to see the other characters get a slight redesign and be used as NPCs for a new sports game to see if people notices and likes them enough to make them playable.
20:28 It's worth noting that the game is also referenced in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, with the main character making a cameo in one of the houses.
Never knew i needed a video going over the Mario Spin-off rosters (and did NOT know how wild some of the early ones were. justice for vampire wario!!!)
1:02:13 Flapper, my beloved. Also, something of note- the Olympics also have Mii Costumes, so to some degree, those like Big, Cream, Marine, Tikal, Emerl, Chip, + Penguin Mario, The Koopalings, etc. are all playable in the Olympics.
You dont think... so going back to Power Tennis on the GCN, yknow how in the intro cutscene Wario & Waluigi find Bowser's man cave and get trained by him to become super powered and fight Mario & Luigi later on? With all the information you've given us about Wapeach It might be likely that if Camelot got their way She might've taken Bowsers place in that intro cutscene.
Considering Hammer Bros are some of the more notoriously formidable enemies in Mario, I think they deserve more rep. All those times I got sniped out of the air by a hammer, they were the real MVPs of Bowser's army. Then Strikers Charged comes around, and I can harness that power to bury the goalie in the dirt for a free shot on goal. Kids growing up on Battle League will never know that joy.
Before this video I would not have believed you if you told me there was a 90 year old man in a Mario spin off game who is confirmed to look at porn. The level of research you go through is crazy
Rosalina holds a special place in my heart as my favorite mainline Mario character (it's through her that I discovered my favorite novel, The Little Prince), but I do agree that ever since she started appearing in spinoffs, their rosters have been...lackluster, to say the least.
I wish they replaced every character with Tonberry. The world would be a utopia if everything was replaced with tonberries Also can we get a Every Single Moogle video LOL
I grew up with the Mario Sports games and quite liked characters such as Plum and Charlie, and would have played as them in any other spin-off regardless of disadvantages. It still disappoints me that Plum was dropped after one game. She wasn't just a trophy, she was also the dictionary reader in Mario Golf GB. She was my favorite as a kid. I thought she looked nice and I liked her calm, not-bothered personality compared to the other characters. I also thought the trophy description was accurate- she was good for players old and new. I also liked Charlie because of his attitude. His "Hey, while we're young" taunt was practically a catchphrase in my family growing up.
39:50 This info comes from some questions fans made o the character deisgner on instagram, so thats maybe just the guy theorizing what the character would have been like if he had been created
25:13 - I was a bit bothered by how the stat calculations were done considering some characters didn't exist before certain games, so I decided to run the percentages based on when they were available. An interesting fact about Double Dash is that Donkey Kong Jr. was originally supposed to return as Donkey Kong's partner over Diddy Kong, as an early build has a portrait of a Donkey Kong Jr. model that isn't it the final game's code and several files for Diddy Kong in the final game refer to him as "dk_jr".
Really great video! I'm happy someone else likes the weird human characters from the N64 and GameCube era, and am an advocator for at least one of them to return in some form. I really like Plum, Kate and Alex. You’ve also introduced me to how awesome Bean is
It’s interesting to think that Mario Kart 8 base roster is such a prime example of “higher number doesn’t necessarily equal good”. If just random power ups of the same existing characters can make it in before so many others who have been in many games before, it feels lazy, as though resources are being conserved almost as though they’re specifically to avoid doing cooler things, on purpose… so they can add the “cooler ones” as DLC later. I’ll admit that the final full DLC version of Deluxe is pretty sweet in my book but it makes me cynical to think that they intentionally withhold things and go “hey buy this subscription for 2 years as it all comes out”, knowing that they probably kept it out on purpose to make people more likely to buy and participate. It’s technically good business, but it also feels so scummy looking backwards. When I can go to games released years back that would be like “hey, wanna revisit Kanto? Secret entire region post game!” Or “You just saw the credits after a good full story… here’s another connected story that doubles the story’s length and adds more details!”… it feels like the attitude of releasing a “good final build product” is rarer than it should be. Now, that latter example could apply to older things like Explorers of Sky, but also things as new as Pikmin 4; so I won’t say it’s ALL bad now. But it certainly feels more rare. And game preservation is going to become awful. Things like Fire Emblem Fates literally lose an entire route and multiple important back story maps because the Eshop (and therefore DLC) died, so buying a used game is always going to be “incomplete”. It hasn’t struck much of the modern era yet but with Nintendo being notorious haters of tools that make preservation more easy (because “oh no what if they learn to steal our modern releases?!”), releasing games in these incomplete state, specifically with Nintendo as a publisher, will always feel like something of a future death sentence. Because even if DLC “completes” a game and you’re willing to pay the extra price, you likely can’t legitimately obtain it forever. And even if some people can learn to hack devices, it overall, to the general public, makes games more easily forgotten and left behind because the average layman can’t go to a GameStop or EBay and on a whim pick up the full experience of a previous game. I cant even as easily lend someone a game card of Fates, for example, and expect them to play Revelation without also using 3rd party places to download it/its DLC or just giving them my whole console. The ability to share and have that sense of video game community has lost something that was cool or even special, like in the days of taking Memory Cards to have a friend visit your Animal Crossing town. You didn’t have to bring your whole console or figure out how to hack it to enjoy the experience, you just needed basic hardware and to go hang out irl. Doing that with “DLC games” is not that simple anymore, even GameCube games that don’t get made anymore are arguably easier to do that with on original hardware than anything in the Wii U/3DS era, and it will likely only get worse as the Switch eventually goes the way of its predecessors. I just hope Nintendo learns to think of not just the present year of “how can we trick kids into a new game for a week this time”, but into actually wanting to make something that makes people revisit it years after. Coney still raves about Strikers Charged years after the fact, Melee players don’t abandon their game, a lot of people still love HeartGold as their favorite Gen; I don’t think it’s purely nostalgia bias (though it can play a part); games were legitimately made in more complete, “we hope you come back and play next year too!” States it feels like. And hopefully Nintendo doesn’t forget there’s awesome magic to that philosophy
Doctor Mario 64 having it's roster made up of Warioland 3 enemies always made it stand out in my mind, especially since I played it before knowing what Warioland even was. Can you imagine something like that happening today, where a Mario spinoff gets its cast made up of Warioware characters?
14:38 that Wapeach concept design is from Mario Power Tennis, no Mario tennis 64. We still dont know how the first concept of Wapeach looks like but looking how much she looks like a young version of Doronjo i think Miyamotto was right.
Clicked immediately as soon as I saw you upload. And hey, I'm okay with you branching out to other franchises besides nintendo. I will watch you regardless!
Is gonna sound weird but I’ve literally been wanting to watch a video with this exact title, just no one had made it yet. I was boutta make it myself but you did a hell of a lot better job than I probably would’ve lol.

I can't believe that Rosalina is already level with Diddy Kong, my boy has actually headlined games, yet constantly gets left out.
It’s always a blast watching your content. The amount of research it must take but also you are just really funny
Doctor Mario 64 having it's roster made up of Warioland 3 enemies always made it stand out in my mind, especially since I played it before knowing what Warioland even was. Can you imagine something like that happening today, where a Mario spinoff gets its cast made up of Warioware characters?
The only Christmas present I could ever ask for. Much love my man, hope all is going well ❤

Bro looks like Sniper from TF2
Hey man I really like your videos, I hope you had a good year
14:38 that Wapeach concept design is from Mario Power Tennis, no Mario tennis 64.
I never knew the Mario Tennis lore ran so deep
Your the best! Very proud of your hard work and dedication!💥💥
