Amazing video!! Thank you again for bringing attention to the challenge with your initial video. I had a blast working on this project and I've learned many things. It took about a week of work.
At first, I thought this would be an extremely rare event. So my initial ambitious idea was to keep only the bare-bone logic of the dog race and run simulations in parallel on my GPU. I experimented with the recompilation project that came out around the same time, but I got overwhelmed quickly. So I went with the other, much slower idea that I had (Bizhawk simulations). I was happy and surprised that it only took three days to get a result. Sometimes, it's better to keep things simple.
If anyone is interested, all the code that I wrote for this project is available on my github. Blue dog is an inspiration for us all.
🫡 thank you for your service bringing blue dog his deserved medal!!!!!!

Blue dog saw the source code of the matrix on that race

Blue dog: Nah I'd win
Blue Dog: "I looked into 1,083,414,090,350,592 possible universes."
"And in how many of them did you win?"
Blue Dog: "Two."
And he's a good boy in everyone of them
"Plus that one time that fat lady was drunk and I won while in last place."
I am curious whether there are differences between PAL and NTSC's handling of the race and whether it affects the number of possible outcomes of blue dog victories or the race ending glitch.

@@Tsuki_the_canadian_otaku Not quite; like the video shows at 8:55, it's possible for a dog to both trigger the glitch (coming in 1st and making the jingle play) and then also cross the finish line first, meaning there are races where the glitch occurs, but doesn't alter the overall outcome of the race. Ace is referring to Blue Dog coming first, but another dog triggering the glitch (meaning it comes in second), while Serge is referring to Blue Dog both triggering the glitch and then also winning the race (meaning it comes in first).

I don't know. It doesn't seem impossible to me that with every single time someone picked the blue dog over the entire time the game has been out, he has won at least once. Consider that not everyone will know the mechanics behind the race/will use the mask and the vast majority of players won't know something special has happened if the blue dog wins. And of course only an absolutely miniscule portion of those races are recorded. I can see it having happened before.
That ending with the Blue Dog getting the 1st place ribbon...it's enough to make a grown man cry!

blue dog after seeing he has a 1 in quadrillion chance of winning ''so youre telling me theres a chance?"
That's how many races there are, not how many of them end in a blue dog win. There are probably quite a few that results in a blue dog win.
1 quadrillion seconds is over 30 million years.
@@cptnoremac Given how long it took, and given the number of runs tried per day, its safe to say its a very low chance. We don't know if blue dog got any other glitch finishes in that long chunk, but the odds are probably 1 in 10+ million. At 1 quadrillion possible races, that adds up to around 100 million races blue dog wins. Not using exact math, because a sample size of effectively 1 is way too small (for either glitched wins or normal, for both its a sample size of 2, and still too small)
@Gamerboi99 Whatever the number, it's much higher than one in a quadrillion.

I had no idea that blue dog even existed before clicking this video but I was so pumped to see him lock in at the end
I literally cried
Same here. I was shocked at how quickly I got emotionally invested
lock in would be an incorrect term, rather lock on. As seen by demonstrated dog stats, blue dog has the highest speed in the first few seconds (or if frames, then may as well last the whole race if using framedrop which I don't think workably exists in this game without skewing timeflow), while the rest of the race is it leeching off of some other dog's speed in it's rear, that it managed to lock on with itself.

In a sense, Blue Dog and Sonic the Hedgehog have more in common than one thinks. There was a point in the franchise's history that another blue runner had the odds so stacked against him, that he became a laughing stock and many thought he couldn't recover. That, is the story of dedication.
As a 24 year old who just recently found himself at rock bottom with the start of the new year , I know if it took blue dog 25 years to win then I just have to keep trying.

Of course an N64 game would be like, "the dog finishes if it's in the intersection of three regions of different size and shape each enveloping half of the map and also it has a 1 pixel wide offshoot that produces strange behavior but not often enough for casual players to notice."
Mario64.png
Tbf, it was all because of one character in the code- the developers didn’t notice either
The ammount of creativity devs Had to have back then due to the lack of tools is honestly astounding
If they could define the 3 regions, why couldn't they define a single smaller region at the finish line in the first place?
They probably re used an area that was used elsewhere@tadferd4340

The “first known” or perhaps even “earliest known recorded instance” more succinctly gives credit where it is due, while acknowledging that such a glitch very likely did occur in the past but was either lost to time or was not recorded in some form
I swear to god, the early finish has happened to me before, I've played this game over a dozen times and tried that race many many times (without the mask) I've had that early victory happen a decade ago.
I've thought this for years. I wonder how many run-altering glitches have been accidentally discovered by casual players who never shared them with the speedrun community because they either didn't realize what they discovered or didn't care. It's one of those thoughts that can keep you up at night if you think about them too hard.
You got to imagine the we were all playing these games but most were isolated seeing as the internet and video capture capabilities were a fraction of what theyre today
Agreed. Someone in early 2000 could've gotten a glitchless blue dog win on their first attempt, but never recorded it or even recalled it because how were they supposed to realize that it was stupidly rare?
Hell yeah, the old saying, "every dog has his day", finally came true for Blue Dog. Love to see it.
how lovely! zamazenta from Pkmn SwSh and blue dog from LoZ MM got their day.
now where's the 3rd bluey to become good?
It’s true what they say. *Puts on shades.*
“Every dog… has his day.”
YEEAAAHHHHH
*WOOOOOOOOOOOOO*
And it finally arrived for this seemingly ill fated soul.
love stories like this. :) from a glitch win to a proper legit win. blue dog teaches us that with perseverance, you can beat the odds.
I play a lot of randomizers and I do recall the doggy race music cutting halfway and hearing only running dogs at least once, never knew what it was until now
Yeah same, though since the race continued i didn't think much of it.
Something about your PFP really makes this comment funnier to me tbh
I was half expecting the Summoning Salt music to start playing on that last dog race. This is a great video, hope the algorithm blesses it!
ohhh my god i VIVIDLY remember being a kid and encountering this glitch. i didn't know about the mask of truth that would have made it easier and had essentially been trying to brute force the minigame for a long time. it should have been the very first time i'd won but my dog did not win, even though i literally saw it cross the finish line first, so little kid me decided the minigame was rigged and simply never finished mm. i thought i must have been remembering this wrong and just finally got fed up - you're telling me that bullcrap actually happened??
dear 8 year old me i am so sorry, you were right all along, you were *robbed*
LMAO 😂😂😂
11:30 Even more simply put: true random number generation DOES exist (and is even common today), but was not common at the time of the release of Majora's Mask. Because of this, all consumer (and most non-consumer) hardware/software actually uses a PSEUDO random number generators. The "flaw" with this is the same seed will always produce the some numbers.
Falkush better have waltzed up and slain Majora after all that so this timeline is the one that sticks without getting reset.
He probably has the save state. If you ask him, he may even give it to you
*Insert the scent from Megamind*
"I did it?"
"He did it."
"I did it?"
"He did it..."
Fitting since him and Megamind are both blue
It was so funny learning years after the fact what had happened and how lucky it was. Nice vid Vid!
Funny thing, I saw you in the video, looked up your username, subbed to your channel, and then when I came back to the video, realized I was hovering directly over your comment already.
By the way, do you know where your profile picture came from? I tried reverse image searching but couldn’t find the original anywhere.
@@harmonicaman4782 At this point I no longer know. I've been using the same profile pic for 10+ years and cannot find it myself anymore. I just keep copies on multiple drives in case I need it for anything at this point. Sorry D:
@@Trevperson it’s alright! Just curious. I really liked the style but all I could find was Pinterest pins, with no mention of where it came from.
This is definitely the most nerdy thing I've ever watched. Enjoyed every minute.
my headcanon was the bugged victory gave blue dog the will to put his all
20:22 I think that moral should be "giving the right conditions end enough dedication it is indeed possible to accomplish anything". Yesterday I didn't even know that game but now blue dog is my life mentor.
I'm unreasonably happy over that low poly dog winning a race. Blue is a good boy.
Thank you for making this. This was a story I needed to hear.
Fun fact: Ironically enough in multiple ways, the world’s oldest dog in history is named “Bluey”. It was an Australian cattle dog who lived for 29 years and 5 months from the years 1910 to 1939.
What’s ironic about it is that there’s not just cartoons about blue dogs, but given how much dedication this blue dog took and how long it was before he finally won is similar in year length compared to that aforementioned dog’s lifespan!
I’m so emotionally proud of the blue dog for his long awaited win! 🤧
Of course, it has to be in Australia.
@@BaoKimshi Australian cattle dog is a breed of dog.
So you’re telling me the Bluey cartoon was named after this dog
@@MariOmor1 Not exactly from what I can tell.
*Insert Bluey pilot theme*
So, under completely optimal conditions, where blue dog has a good condition and everyone else has bad/neutral conditions, blue dog has a 1/30,000 chance to win the race. Amazing
You need a much bigger sample size than this to actually know the odds.
If the odds are actually 1/5,000, then they could have still gotten unlucky. You'd need to see how many attempts succeed over a few hundred thousand at least
I do not give a shit how statistics work, I already know this is incorrect and I don't care
No the others always have 3 good 5 bad and 5 neutral, you need blue to be good, and then in order of speed to have the fastest dogs have the worst conditions
It was 30,000 attempts where blue dog has the best chance he could possibly have. So in real life the odds are way way lower than 1/30K
Never tell me the odds!
I remeber as a kid, i always rooted for the underdog, i always connected with these characters. In games, movies abd even in real life sports, as a kid... i ALWAYS picked blue dog, only to watch him lose, over, and over, and over again... Over the years, life came and went, but the hope and dream of blue dog winning has been kept in my heart.
I love you blue dog, you are, and will always be, my winner 💙
Sir, this is the most gripping tale I have watched or listened to for quite some time. Bravo.
Never have i been invested for a dog, in a race, in a game, i never played.
Not knowing or caring is most of my viewing experience
This is so embarrassing but when blue dog got the true win I legitimately teared up. I’ve been having a really rough year, I’ve been lethargic and slow due to a lot of traumatic things resurfacing. I’ve been trying to get better and get help, but just like the blue dog I’ve felt like I’ve kept losing. He is made fun of by the community but he keeps trying. He’s looked down upon, and people expect him to fail. But he KEEPS trying. Pushing himself. Running as fast as he can with his little legs. And to everyone’s disbelief he won. No glitches. Just pure determination. I love you blue dog. Never let anyone look down upon you again. It’s genuinely been hard to live recently, but I promise I will keep trying because of you.
I wouldn’t exactly push your luck since the odds are literally stacked heavily against it. But if you want to, OK by me!
@herbieleafcookie, I legitimately teared up reading your comment and I'm not embarrassed at all. Keep racing that track buddy. I hope better times find you soon! 🤠🐾🎲
He's a spirit animal, that's for sure.
Hope you're taking care of yourself as best as you can.
I cried too!!
Unironically I actually cried seeing blue dog cross the finish line first, idk why but all these years of trashing on the dog only to see him win just brought the light back into my soul.
I love you dad
You spent every day of your life for nearly 2 decades trashing a video game dog because they didn't win a race? And cried when they finally one?
Jfc, get some help.
@@wiredoge6778bros a negative nancy
@@tandemmusic1tbf i actually agree with him,guy cried because a game character won a race? People really need to focus on life than some game character,im not hating on the guy though.
@wiredoge6778 notice how they didnt exactly say every waking day lolllll
Very nice storytelling! Fun, funny, and just the right amount of technical depth. :D
On the evening of August 25, 2024, the other dogs realized it was Blue Duke’s birthday.
It’s not the only coincidence I discovered related to the blue dog.
Have you ever heard of the world’s oldest dog named “Bluey”?
This is exactly the type of youtube content I've been missing. This is such a breath of fresh air.
This is a great video. You're clear and concise. You bring up information as it's relevant to the audience, like when you saved talking about framerate until it mattered. Your explanation of the glitch was simple and effective, and you wisely chose not to explain how RNG works. You didn't bog the plot down in unnecessary details about LoZ or MM. You did a great job building up the challenge, and you shared the hard work that went into solving it in a dramatic way. We need more videos like this on youtube. You're genuinely really good at this.
I immediately noticed I was in for a good video when I saw they were going straight into the topic without so much as a greeting. Not a single second was wasted. The topic and information were discussed in precisely the amount of time they required. You can't find this precision and quality even in academic papers.
The blue dog is like that guy who won the olympic gold medal when the other contestants fell over each other.
Seeing Blue Dog finally win the race fills you with determination
Maybe a bit too much though. I’d rather shiny hunt for something.
unexpected undertale
* Its INTEGRITY inspires you to continue.
* You are filled with DETERMINATION.
This probably inspired the Undertale snail race
@ random racing mini games are a common trope in video games

Dear God!
@@shuri ... There's more.
WHERE! WHERE DID HE PLACE IN THE RACE?!
@@Raskoflinko No...
I never knew he had all the odds against him but I cannot explain how emotional this video made me… I'm literally crying because I witnessed Blue Dog's resilience! This is without a doubt one of my favorite videos I've ever seen!!
Same here, I think that no matter how people have a condition, illness, disability, or etc. there’s always a chance to reach your goal . For me personally, I thought in the future I wouldn’t reach my goal because of my mental health, but seeing this made me realize I’ll get there because there’s never a 0 possibility.
@@VinellAngel_111 The odds can be low, but they are NEVER zero, and I hope you can find the strength to fight for that chance.
@@krourou2 omg that’s the line I was looking for, and thank you for telling me this, I needed to hear that. And I hope you have a wonderful day
Hearing the race jingle brought back memories of coming over to my friend's house and watching them play through Majora's Mask when we were both little. We were scared of some sections of the game lol.
I remembered those days of trying to look up all these gaming urban legends online and how even if we would be told from Yahoo answers and Neoseeker forum comments that it was impossible, we wanted to believe that some claims, like the possibility for this cute blue dog to win, could happen. You have no idea how allowing this to happen and sharing this challenge's story warmed my heart at the start of a new year. I'll send this to that friend (whose favorite color happens to be blue too!) who always hoped this was possible! What a time to be alive. Thank you! o7
How to always win: define the finish line differently from the rest.
@@KairuHakubi Lol!! 😂
That is oddly inspiring
There truly is justice for Blue Dog. At least he lived long enough to secure a victory, given that most dogs has an average life expectancy of around 15 years. Blue Dog truly is the trooper that pushed when everyone gave up on him.
moral of story: all it takes is one being to appear and change things forever, praise blue dog and his righteous family.
