Temple of the Dog "Hunger Strike" REACTION & ANALYSIS by Vocal Coach / Opera Singer

  • So many of you have mentioned Chris Cornell's vocals in the past, and I honestly have never heard his work. Your constant prodding left me to ask our Patrons what we should look at, and "Hunger Strike" made it to the list. Featuring Chris and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam (I am slightly familiar) in a duet, I just had to give a listen. I was not expecting this much twang!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Chris Cornell and Temple of the Dog for the very first time, performing "Hunger Strike”.

Unfortunately he died all by himself. He “had it all”, but was still a tortured soul.
If only he had known the grace of God.
I hope he does now. If I were God, I’d say: I wish you had known me in the world. Your soul is genuine, but you were weak. Nonetheless, I welcome you to Paradise.

Temple of the Dog was a side project for a group of friends and musicians from Seattle after Andy Wood died. Andy was the singer of Mother Love Bone and Chris Cornell’s friend and roommate.
Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament (guitar, bass respectively) were members of MLB, then did the Temple of the Dog project with Chris, as well as Mike McCready (guitar). It was around this time they found Eddie Vedder and began forming Pearl Jam, which could be considered the successor to Mother Love Bone in some ways, though they are different bands obviously.
Chris then continued on with Soundgarden, his primary project, and Pearl Jam became what it became. Chris’ solo work is also incredible. My personal favorite of the Seattle singers. Seattle just had something really amazing going on in the late 80s into the 90s.
Feels odd to write this out because it’s widely known info for my generation, we grew up with this stuff. But I guess not everyone did.
Listen to Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns (Mother Love Bone) sometime. And the entire Singles soundtrack for that matter.

I do hope that one day she will do a Mother Love Bone song. With her love of the music as well as the stories behind the songs/artists, I think she’d appreciate that MLB was basically proto-PearlJam with a different lead vocalist. And talk about two completely different singers. Andy and Eddie are both one-of-kind-vocalists. Just on opposite ends of the spectrum.
Definitely agree a great choice would be Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns (last track on the MLB album). Maybe a comparison of Andy and Eddie both singing the same song. That would be cool.
-side note: Only time I’ve ever cried when a famous person died was the night we lost Chris. I am definitely a fan, but not necessarily a Stan so I didn’t expect to start sobbing. Losing such a gifted artist affected me so much more than I ever expected. RIP Chris and RIP Andy. ❤️

He said enjoyed calling instead of his agent! Very down to Earth and later we were able to meet at a Seattle Pearl Jam show so he was able to put a face to the voice on the phone 📱. Chris Cornell is one of those once-in-a-generation voices. And it wasn't just his voice. His lyrics were world class, always. I'm not usually one to be all that affected by celebrity deaths but his was one that led me to shed tears. I forgot if it was freshman or sophomore year in high school I got Superunknown but in the 25-ish years since, it's an album I'll still play at least a few tracks from every few weeks. I really hope he knew how big an impact his music had. To so many who have been afflicted by the the mental states he was so eloquent in expressing... when life could leave a young man feeling so alone, and for his work to say 'No. You're not." ... Rest in peace good sir.

    • @ExaltedDuck
      @ExaltedDuck 2 роки тому +4

To your question about other work with Vedder, they did a whole album together as a group called Temple of the Dog with 10 glorious tracks. The other one I always think of is "Say Hello To Heaven".
For other tracks, I'm a bit partial to Soundgarden's Superunknown album as I mentioned before. It is filled with gems. "Black Hole Sun" was the big radio hit, definitely a good show of their skill. "Fell on Black Days" was another fairly popular single that really shows his lyrical ability, too, and how he could just wallow in despair. However, "The Mailman" is one I like a little better... a little less radio friendly due to a darker theme but just so ominous and angry. "The Day I tried To Live" as well. There are two other tracks on it that really show other sides Soundgarden: "4th of July" with religious/armageddon kinds of theme and a gritty downtempo metal groove driving it and the criminally underrate "Like Suicide" that closes the album... IMHO one of the greatest hard rock songs ever recorded, showing how tempo and thrashing isn't necessary for a dark, hard sound. And with haunting lyrics about a bizarre inspiration (woke up to the sound of a bluebird that had crashed into a window, found it on he patio with a broken neck, did the humane thing with the only handy instrument, an old brick, and mused on the thoughts as it unfolded "Bit down on the bullet now / I had a taste so sour / I had to think of something sweet / Love's like suicide / Safe outside my gilded cage / With an ounce of pain / I wield a ton of rage / Just like suicide"
He did some really interesting solo accoustic stuff after Soundgarden, probably most notable is his cover of Beat It as a blues/soul lamentation... has to be heard, can't be described.
His later work with Audioslave (Cornell in front of Rage Against Machine's band) which all also gave us a full body of excellent work over three albums. Specific tracks I love: Show me how to Live, Exploder, I am The Highway, Like a Stone, The Last Remaining Light, Out of Exile, Be Yourself, Doesn't Remind Me, Wide Awake... and many more.

There's just something about it, you get all these crazy overtones and resonance. I'm so upset I was a baby still when these guys were making the majority of their music, oh to have grown up with grunge and alt rock at such a high! I cried when Chris died, even moreso seeing the effect it had on his loved ones. If you ever get a chance, watch the version of "Black" that Eddie did after his death, it's absolutely heartbreaking. At the end he just keeps repeating "Come back, come back"... I can barely stand to listen, it's so raw.

Aside from the ridiculous high notes at the end, how can you match the emotion of what was happening there at the studio when it was recorded, with Andrew's death so fresh in all their minds. Soundgarden however there are some great live versions of songs like Jesus Christ Pose, Beyond the Wheel and Slaves and Bulldozers that really showcase his voice, when he was at his best and in a live setting.

Eddie said Chris was the greatest singer, ever, of all-time, after Chris died. Coming from an absolutely elite, grade-A, top notch, gifted singer like Eddie, you can't ask for higher praise. It's pretty cool how Eddie was even willing to sort of take a backing role in this song and just provide a base while he let Chris go wild and take the lead. Kind of like how a rhythm guitarist works with a lead guitarist, and lets the lead guitarist take all the crazy solos.
