    Hey there, it's been a while since I made this video and I have to say I now DISAGREE with what I said at 6:48. I think this video is still loaded with good information so I'm leaving it on the channel but my thinking on the last section has evolved. The extra shadow detail in Clog2 wasn't super apparent in these tests but is in some shooting scenarios. In short, I only shoot Clog2, I never never Clog3, unless a client specifically asks for it. Ya live and ya learn.

      I own a C70 and shot in Wide DR until Canon 709 was released, and now I typically use that. I've found that the extra work involved with shooting log isn't usually worth it to me. However, I saw this video and saw the difference between Wide DR and both log profiles, so I'm considering giving Clog2 another chance. What is the easier way to shoot in Clog2, then get it to look like Canon 709? Which LUT should I apply?

    Great video. I always shoot in clog2 because it opens the shadows a lot and it matches closer to what the Alexa looks like. Clog 3 looks clean but it smashes the dark gradients together. It is more visible in scenes with with deeper shadows.

      Hey Griffin! Do you still prefer C-Log 2 even in really, really low light situations? I've seen some talk online about how you can get a little bit better of an image out of C-Log 3 when the situations are just out of your control lighting wise, or maybe you are shooting out on the street at night etc. Just curious what your thoughts are for extreme situations.

    This is great! For me, clog 2 really helps when shooting exteriors and I want to expose more for my highlights or the sun. Even the simplest need to slightly under expose the skin just to keep that sun in play more naturally. Since so much more data is in the shadows you can balance out the shot with much less clipped then when I used to shoot Sony, etc etc. It's pretty awesome all told/

  • @thefilmpoets
    @thefilmpoets 3 роки тому +4

    Nice stuff. Remember that Clog 2 wants to see 18% grey higher than clog 3. So technically you're supposed to raise your exposure about 1/3 stop to 1/2 stop over clog 3 exposure. When you do that, the highlight retention is about the same but the shadow detail goes way up.
    Edit - never mind, just finished the video where you dressed this.

      Hey! Vegas Pro user here too! Use proxies on Vegas THEN for rendering use Voukoder. I'm not sure how recent of a Vegas version you've been using but they've come a long way! On Version 19 now, I'm able to edit 10 bit Raw and render 32 bit color levels no problem.

    clog3 on c200 and c300mk2 was created to create more richer blacks and less noise. The DGO sensor essentially addresses this be eliminating all noise all together.

  • @Brett.Hatfield

    regarding c200...bro do you know why my waveform stops data at the 80 mark on clog3 and in clog regular i can take the wave form up to 100 (i dont plan on doing this ever) but why does clog3 stop the data right at the 80 mark on the waveform monitor.

    I just got Clog 3 into my R6 and I was super confused when I applied Canons LUT.. Clog 1 and Clog 3 looked identical! So I guess I always have to bring down some highlights with Clog 3 pre LUT .. right?

  • @riparianstudios
    @riparianstudios 3 роки тому +2

    I guess I would argue with your logic that you are only going to be able to pull out the two stops of DR on CLog 2 if you "eff up your exposure." Hypothetically you could expose to the left to preserve highlight detail and pull detail that would otherwise be lost in CLog 3.

    So I shot at a bright source with both clog2 and bt709 wide dr. clog2 retains all highlight detail at a max f5.6, and wide DR retains all highlight at a max f8. does this mean clog2 has *one stop* more in the highlights than bt 709 Wide DR? and, with in the same scene, shadows start to clip at f5.6 for clog2, but f8 for wide dr. I doubt this means wide dr has more DR in the shadows, but what could it mean? thanks

    does the lut work for r6 clog3?

  • @BenEricson
    @BenEricson 3 роки тому

    Yeah, the dynamic range is really. misleading. You'll always end up with a gross sun blob if you shoot into the sun. It's not going to look like film or Arri.
    Was this C-LOG 3 C.Gamut or BT.709? I used to love to shooting C-Log 2 BT.709, but for whatever reason this was removed from the C70 and C300 Mkii. You don't nee a LUT for C-LOG3 BT.709... You can just add contrast.

    • @SoundItOutFilms
      @SoundItOutFilms  2 роки тому

      CLO2 has the most DR so I’d start there. When exposing I’d assume whatever is outside the windows isn’t too important for most real estate, so I wouldn’t be afraid of blowing out windows if you can’t keep it all.

    Haha, really cool comparison. Just laughing, because i much preferred the image from davinci that you called "too green"... i always disliked the overexagerrated Orange and Pink especially in Caucasian Skintones (esp. when slightly underexposed!) that Canon and Especially Panasonic tend towards... always like the Alexa or Sony Cinema-Look much more (that is more green)...Colour is subjective i guess... I would take the davinci image 10/10 Times over the canon LUT because of this... :)
