    c-70 lcd is the truth once you get used to it.. I flip zebras on briefly to check exposure then back off most of the time to view the scene. tracking focus requires use of lcd anyway, so its required on c-70 to use lcd. luminance is color on lcd! thank you for the breakdown.

    I've been using zebras my whole career. Its the best way to set your exposure for run n' gun filming. You eventually learn that other useful things are in he same luminance range like concrete, and light colored tree bark. Once you get good at judging your exposure with zebras, you're usually spot on.

    It was 2006, there were no DSLR or mirrorless cameras. We were using Sony PD-170 camcorders. There were not even DSLRs that date. Even HD was not a thing. The only thing we were using to expose was "zebra" and it was correct 95% of the time. When HD and DSLR cameras came everybody forgot about zebra. I tried to tell about zebra to my colleagues but they were not interested in. Now I see somebody exposes correctly with zebra after more than 15 years.

    I have a simple method exposing Clog-2 (or any log) on the C70 using false color. Caucasian skin is assumed to be roughly 1-stop over middle grey. Pink/peach/orange whatever is 1-stop over middle grey. Put the highlights on skin near pink. Done. You will be in a very good ballpark. Has worked well so far.

    I am thinking of getting a C70 having been using C500 mk 2. One man band producing fast turn around documentary and corporate (I follow a politician around) often in vertical it looks perfect. Will be a shame about the smaller sensor but think I will go RF for the weight. But after stumbling on some reviews with inaccuracies and some pretty cowboy approaches it’s amazing to have someone so professional and knowledgeable sharing their views on UA-cam. Thanks.

    Thanks that zebra technique is interesting, I always thought similarly that it was only really to see which highlights were blowing out. I've generally approached exposure as a highlight saving exercise with the C70 since the shadows are clean and you can end up with a pretty flexible image, but I'm going to put in a bit more effort and give your zebra technique a try!

    Is there a disadvantage to compensation for the 2-step NDs by adjusting the ISO in 1/3-stop increments instead of the f-stop? In my mind I would rather go up from 800 ISO 1/3 of a stop than to go down from, say, 2.8 1/3 of a stop (which may make my DOF too shallow).

    • @SoundItOutFilms
      @SoundItOutFilms  Рік тому

    I found this very repeatable with a lot of cameras that have a Log curve, in my Panasonic S1H also do the trick with Zebras 1+2, 1 set to 42 IRE or middle grey in V-Log, highlights in skintones max to 55 IRE and then just for ajusting the contrast ratio I use an exposimeter metering the middle grey and shadow region for set the desire ratio. This way to do can be more useful in a planned shot or film set, maybe for run and gun not at all, but is an alternative way to expose a shot

    I'v been digging in UA-cam for videos that talk about exposing different kind of logs.
    And this is by far the best practical explanation and implementation of exposing the log image !
    Not only for Clog, the logic and method could be applied to all kind of gammas if the official 18% grey was known.
    Thank you so much bro.
    Now on I would never miss a single video on this channel.
    Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏
    One question though : is there any need for overexposing the canon logs as we do with sony ones in order to defeat noise?

    • @SoundItOutFilms
      @SoundItOutFilms  2 роки тому

      Depends on the camera... with the C70 no (shadows are super clean), C200 on the other hand, very noisy so it could help. Others fall somewhere in that spectrum.

    Good information in a perfect pace and level of detail. I would recommend that you look into why the video does not show up under exposing with zebras search, I spent most of yesterday looking at videos on the subject and did not come across yours. Maybe adding it to the tittle or keywords. Saying so just in case it is of help. Fo whatever reason in my tests with clog3 on the r5 with zebras at 45 I get the skin underexposed, hence why I'm looking for videos on the matter.

    • @stefanmaass7053
      @stefanmaass7053 2 роки тому

      This probably happens because Log2 got more latitude regarding dynamic range. When it comes to Clog3 I would suggest trying Zebras at 55 +-5 for caucasian skin. Give it a try!

    I've watch all your videos on the C70 and I've not heard you or any one else say they've had this problem. Do you ever get a Buffer Overflow Recording Has Stopped when shooting in S&F mode 120/23.976? I get this message after recording for about 10 seconds. Sometimes the camera locks up and I has to power it off then back on. I'm using Pro Grade 25GB V90 cards I've already replaced them thinking they were bad but the new cards are doing the same thing. Of all the UA-cam videos I've watched on this camera I've not seen one person talking about the camera doing this when recording in 120 slow motion. Oddly enough it was happening every time I was filming the trees in my backyard. When I moved away from the tree it worked but when I pointed the camera up in the tree at 24mm it would do it every time. This happens on both cards as well. Any suggestions or thoughts?
