Dawn, as I am turning 65, I am looking for new ways to stay involved and interacting in the community. I wanted to share with your readers that I just went to my city's senior center today for the first time. I got a free lunch, beef tips with gravy on rice, bread, green beans and cake with all the sweet tea I could drink (3- 12 oz cups as I LOVE tea). It didn't cost me a dime. Also upon leaving they have food donated by Walmart and I got some onions, 2 bell peppers (a little soft), one thick head of romaine (my favorite lettuce that just went to flower before forming a head here in South Texas in my garden and two small whole wheat Bonilla buns. All of it was for free along with a couple of bags of coffee (like what you would use in a 12 cup coffee maker). The most important thing I got was meeting 3 new ladies that I will be having lunch with again tomorrow. I am not into the dominos and bingo stuff or the crafts (they have a quilting day), but I did ENJOY the company for lunch. I went there hoping to meet some new people to discuss gardening within my area, instead, I may have found a place where I can volunteer at to replace the food bank volunteering. I can't volunteer at the foodbank anymore as my back will not allow it. I could've been going to the center since I was 60, but I really felt the people were too old for me, but I was wrong. It was enjoyable. I have donated foods from my garden and leftover garden plants/seeds to the center in the past, but today was the first time that I actually went as a client. I encourage others to check for a center in their area as it was great fun to meet new people and a couple of old people that I know indirectly from the community, like the man who used to work in the gardening center at Walmart. Monday thru Friday they have a free lunch, if you eat at the center. Check out your local senior center if you are over 60. Imagine, 20 meals a month that you don't have to shop for, cook, clean up after or pay for---- I should've gone sooner!
I googled senior citizen center in my zip code and found a list of nursing homes.
sounds like you had a very Blessed day, I like to garden also, I don't like bingo but I like quilting, once you start quilting it is hard to stop, it is wonderful to make lap quilts as gifts for people because they are so warm and comforting..I live near Chicago so I really doubt we would get a free lunch, so you are very Blessed and I hope you enjoy your gardening this year, I love to plant lettuce and cucumbers. I've been encouraging my brother to go to the senior center in his town. My mother used to go there for water exercise and loved the center. I'm not sure if we have one, but I'd be up for beef tips any day, lol. Glad you found a good group! 👍

I think what people call "tough love" is lack of self awareness and empathy. And if we gave them the same tough love using their communication style, they will most likely be offended. There are always nice ways to say something.

For the people we love and care deeply for, it is hard to stay quiet.
20 years ago, one of my brothers was 400 pounds. Nobody said anything to him. One day at my parents house and we were all there, his wife says to me “I feel so bad for him that he has to use a sleep apnea machine and he can’t play with our son blah blah blah” and so I said … “well, he can start by giving up the 12 pack of Mt Dew a day and all those French fries “. Well, you’d have thought I shot him ! She was so mad at me. And I didn’t say it in front of everyone. Just her and my mom were in the same room. And I told his wife, “I love him, he’s my brother and I don’t want to bury my baby brother !” To make a long story short, I talked with him about just cut back to 3 cans a day instead of 12 and other suggestions but I said it lovingly. I told him I loved him. Fast forward now to today. He’s around 250 pounds ( 6 feet tall). He’s been able to enjoy playing with his kids and has even helped coach his sons football. And he’s even thanked me. But what bothers me is how people even within a family, don’t want to “step on someone’s toes” but if it helps them, and done in a loving way, I think we need to. ❤️
@off-gridsimplyhappyrodriguez That puts you in a tricky situation. Sometimes, people just want to vent. They don't want your advice or suggestions. I've learned that the hard way. I'm a problem solver, so it's difficult for me not to offer advice when presented with a problem.

I really love the community and comments as I can really be a part of topics I care about, and do enjoy sharing my ideas or giving support. When I watch on TV there aren't comments so find myself logging in to my laptop. This community is great, thanks all!

Hi Dawn, if u can add, subtract, multiply and or divide u don’t even need a calculator at the grocery store. I go with my list written on paper n always have a pencil in my purse. Here in AZ we have to pay 2 0/0 tax on food. As I put each item in my cart I turn my list over n put it on the back. If necessary I note what that item is if it is out of the ordinary. As I go along I usually round up the pennies needed for the food tax. When I get to the cash register I generally know within a dollar or two what my total should be. Also, as u have mentioned numerous times, I’m watching the amounts as they come up n check my receipt before I leave the store. Many times my very small budget has made me very mindful of the total as I’m going along. I usually do produce first as I won’t compromise on having fresh fruits and vegetables, then I proceed to the eggs, dairy, etc., then on to the canned goods n if there is any money left I go to the meat and cheese areas or the canned meats and fish. This method isn’t cumbersome and hasn’t failed me in the many years I’ve used it. Every few months I have to replenish laundry, cleaning and minimal paper products. I have a separate small fund for dog food and supplement my dogs food with lefter over small amounts of leftover meats and veggies. Btw, I’m 78 years old and this has been foolproof for me. Your channel is definitely a community, and I think that's why so many people keep coming, even if it's subconscious or unconscious. We are social beings, even us introverts; we crave interaction. And we know that this community is safe, encouraging, comforting, and informative.
There is a variety of personalities, so therefore, a whole community. The community is mostly comfort, encouragement, and roses (mentally).
I remember when I got the news of a dear family friend who passed on the night before. He was like a son to me & best friends with my kids. It was 10:45 EST when I got the news. I didn't know how I was going to make it, but I realized I only had 15 minutes before your video, and that brought me comfort.
Several years ago, I had a similar community on Amazon in which we brought each other support & comfort. We'd review books & other products. We'd comment on each other's reviews, giving each other compliments & encouragements. People starting leaving the group, I was the last to leave. I was sad.

Your friend is correct. The truth is much harder to take. It may actually be beneficial. I find being honest with myself to be a better approach and ultimately causes me to improve my life rather taking the gentle approach. I watch so many influencers who have these lofty goals of saving money, paying down debt, or losing weight or whatever only to be watching 3 years later with no progress. It is like watching paint dry. Many times we support them at the beginning but after awhile it becomes clear that they really need a kick in the butt. Are you happy with the way things are currently? If not, take real action now. Your future self will be thanking you immensely.
I love being part of the frugal community. I find most of the comments supportive and useful, which is why I comment. I don’t mind so much constructive criticism but I can’t stand it if I feel that is being used as an excuse to bully or shame someone, or undermine someone’s channel/community…

The trouble with comments is that we aren't able to see a person's face or hear their tone of voice. It's difficult to ascertain sarcasm or true meaning. If someone has already commented on this, I'm sorry I repeated your thoughts. I usually read the comments first but didn't have time today. I will say that I think 99% of the comments on this channel are helpful and supportive of one another. I really enjoy reading the interaction with each other. I don't see that on other channels. Your channel has so many new subscribers. If you start getting thousands of comments, I'll be reading them all day, lol. Love to all, Linda 💕

I have been thinking of my spending habits since finding you on YT and this month some of the steps I took last month are finally paying off for me.
One major example was putting up a clothesline in the backyard to line dry the clothes.
My spouse and I both love being out in the yard hanging up our items ... the electric bill dropped almost 50$ this month!

I am sitting here 😂 because these questions are ridiculous. Along the same lines imagine someone asking “ why are you wearing Blue instead of Red?” Or why are you eating chicken instead of fish? I would find these questions about your car and beating invasive even If it came from a friend . People should respect boundaries and not have to explain personal or family choices. Some irritating people even make comments about choice of tiles, colour schemes in houses they visit. I tell them off when they do.

Ever since social media came along everyone seems to be very thin skinned. Before social media many people had no idea and no care what others thought of them. I always tell people if it's someone you don't know why do you care what they think of you?

I agree about critical comments, but I know for a fact there are people who comment intentionally to be rude, the trolls. What you said about 'is it true?' is really where the discernment comes in. I watch a wide variety of videos, from saving money, homesteading, spiritual, food preservation, gardening, sewing and quilting, etc. It doesn't seem to matter how nice, helpful or educational these channels are, there's always someone trolling and being nasty. I'm glad you don't let it get to you. You're right, we live in a society where we are conditioned to want to only hear the good things. I think when people get disrespectful is when it becomes a problem

I think people can think twice before they comment, but I really hate UA-camr rants on comments. I’ve unfollowed UA-camr over subscriber rants. Their feelings are totally valid, but I never joined in for rants. It’s not where I need to be spending my time.
