We don’t use a lot of dairy. We do eat lots of produce and we don’t waste food buying junk food. Health is wealth.
Did you ever notice that produce goes “bad” before chips and cookies do?! Because produce is REAL food. 😊
Great point
Love it, eat real food, if you cannot pronounce don’t eat it👍🤗
Go through your food inventory before you shop..Make your list based on what you already have.
"What can I go without this week?" Actually, that's brilliant... I think people would be surprised how many things they do not "need." Especially in the processed foods category.
Thank you
Instead of buying fresh vegetables , I buy the frozen bag ones, they last a long time.
I grow as many as I can and freeze extras to use over the winter. 😊
True. I'll freeze fresh vegetables if I see I'm not going to use them in time. ❤
I wish I could grow more. My brother and I are kind of "micro guerrilla farming" on our front deck. We've tried several things, having the best results with tomatoes & peppers. This year, I'm adding lettuce, spinach & some asst herbs. I'd like to see if I could manage a zucchini, lol. Happy Gardening!
I even use canned fruit and evaporated milk. I’m only one old lady things go bad too fast for me.
Great ideas Dawn! 😊
Extra produce can always be washed, chopped up and frozen, and there’s no fear of food waste. Especially, when there’s a sale on fresh produce I like to buy it. This way know I have fresh frozen produce and I saved some money.
🌷Sam
I do the same.
Last week we had to many carrots, and they were starting to go bad .I ground them up, put them into small zip lock bags and froze them. Now when I make soup or stir fry I take a package out and use it.
Another thing I do if I buy too much produce or dairy I freeze it.I pour milk into small jars and put them in the freezer for my coffee. This helps not to have to throw it away.I've done this with cottage cheese and sour cream.
Great tip
Buy UltraPasteurized milk. It's a little more expensive, but it lasts much longer! 🥛
Thanks for the tip!
Lactaid and Fairlife are national brand names. I buy the comparable store brand. I buy UltraPasteurized half & half too. I end up spending less on dairy because I don't end up with any going bad.
My hubby won’t drink that kind. He doesn’t like it.
I buy the refrigerated kind (whole milk) and it does taste slightly sweeter. I don't like the taste of the shelf stable milk. If I have to use something shelf stable, I'll usually opt for soy milk or Nido powdered milk depending on what I need. 🥛
Keep yr eyes on the unit price I saved soooo much money by looking at the unit price...or ounces or weight of the product as well....😊😊😊
I have to do this every time I shop.
@theunknownknowsBYvoivod that's good. Yr making a wise choice when u do that. Way to go!! 🙂
And sometimes the bigger item is more costly ounce per ounce. Never used to be that way
@@cjhoward409 yr right. But it is a good practice to carry out. Wouldn't u agree??
Good tip!
Make a grocery list and follow it.
Meal planning helps so much and making things we REALLY like! Leftovers are frozen. I have good storage/freezer containers and always have a variety of sauces, soups and casseroles I can pull put for a quick meal. I always make larger quantities for this reason.
Great idea!!
We were wasting milk because we would leave the last 1-2 servings for the other. Communication breakdown! Solved.
Perfect
Pause ....... before you step foot in a shop. Think about what you are planning to buy; look at your list; take a deep breath then get in and out as fast as possible. Frugal Queen in France mentioned intentional shopping a while back. I think it is a very good idea. It keeps you focused & less likely to spend impulsively.
I use Walmart Grocery Pickup since covid. I finally actually shopped in store at the beginning of this year and realized how many products they have that I never buy.
Great tips. What I chose to do because I was overwhelmed with big shopping, so I shop twice weekly. Basically 4 days at a time. I spend less, plan better and there's no waste.
I keep to a menu planner so I know exactly where items will be used. All left overs are just enough to pack my son a lunch for work.
Love that!
Learn to cook! Then learn to make all your favorite takeout foods. Then bake all your treats. I make 1 treat a week and freeze. I always have something available. Most of my treats are made with oats (cheap, protein, complex carbs and fiber 💛 them). I make brownies, muffins, quick breads in muffin tins. There are TONS of copycat recipes online.
Consider also purchasing in bulk (Sam's, Costco) when unit prices are advantageous with a friend or family mem er. This ma be beneficial for the frugal and spatially challenged!
Great tips
There can be good sales on baking items, including butter, before holidays. I use sour cream instead of milk in many recipes. Also, milk can be frozen. Butter can be frozen, too.
Great tip!
Great ideas. A well stocked pantry and freezer with many basic food items helps you from running to the store too frequently. Start stocking up and adding a few items per week. Stock up on everything and you don't have to go to the store but maybe every 1-2 weeks.
Bagged coleslaw I use as is with dressings etc. Unused I use coleslaw in stir fries with other vegetables. Or if I have half a bag left, I will freeze it and bring it out later frozen for homemade soups or stews. 😊
It's great for eggroll-in-a-bowl too!
Ounce per ounce it’s cheaper to buy a whole head of cabbage and easy to cut up. 😊
Sounds great!
Great tips! The best advice I have is to plan your menus. Shop from a list that includes all the ingredients you need for the meals you've planned. Cook from scratch. It's okay to have a few convenience meals for the days you don't have time to cook. Cut out all fast food and restaurant take out. It's amazing how much you'll save. Love to all, Linda 💕
That's a great idea!
I buy fresh produce and meats on sale. I also buy eggs and dairy. I eat what I buy before I purchase anything else. Use it up. Meat goes in the freezer if I’m not using it that day or the next. I don’t make recipes because I try to eat healthy. I just cook meat and a vegetable, etc. Keeps it simple, cheap, healthy, fast and easy.
I divide my meats into portion sizes then freeze them. This allows for just what I think we will eat each meal.
Brilliant
Great ideas Dawn! I find myself putting something back that is expensive for how much you get. I think of how long I have to work to pay for something. If you’re looking at $20 steaks and make $20 an hour, ask yourself if you’re willing to work an hour for those steaks. Another thing is to check the cost per unit on items, buy lost leader items at different stores. Also, check your refrigerator frequently for produce and dairy and try to use them, freeze, or give away to family before you have to throw it out. I’m guilty of this too. I think it’s a good thing to tell children to choose items because you’re on a budget. What better way to teach kids about the value of a dollar. Those children will be smarter adults when it comes to money.
Great comment
Produce is my bug-a-boo. I've resorted to mostly frozen veggies and I try to chop & freeze anything leftover from any fresh produce. Keep your sour cream, cottage cheese etc longer by storing it upside down in the refrigerator. 🛒🛍 Sacramento, California USA 🇺🇸
Thanks for sharing!
To save money I buy yogurt in the quart container instead of individual servings. If I am trying to save money I don’t buy premade treats I make my own cookies or brownies or pop popcorn (not the microwave kind)
Very smart
I made my husband a Reuben sandwich for lunch today. I didn’t have Swiss cheese but had some provolone to finish up. Still tastes great.
Sounds great!
Good Morning Dawn,
My younger son is good at cooking . He does not live with me. A lot of times i share my stir fry veggies with him and he shares proteins with me. He usually takes his lunch to work. He has some yummy lunch items that would rival most nice restaurants. I do like sharing my veggie stir fries with my son. That way I don't have to eat if for 5 days straight.
That's great.
Trading meals is a great idea. It may allow you meals you don't/won't cook!
@@3TXSisters Thank you
@@pennynickels5216 My son sautes fish way tastier than I can make them.
I do like to use flavored finishing oils on my veggie stir fry and my son's Wild caught salmon.
I am also struggling to get my grocery bill down from $225 /wk to the dollar amounts that other frugal women have theirs down to. I've done quite a lot to do so, but nothing has worked. I am beginning to think that my definition of grocery may be the problem. When I shop, I get everything I need for the upcoming week. Some items last a month, but I get them the week I run out. So that I pay for paper goods; cleaning supplies; bath supplies; hygiene supplies; vitamins; etc. and my weekly bill runs about $225. The receipt breaks that down to Food; Household; Health & Beauty; etc. So when I say that my definition may be my problem, it is likely that women who can spend $100 /wk on food are only counting the food items and not the dish liquid it takes to wash the dishes, etc. If I take it that way, maybe I'm down to $100/wk, but I just count the total amount I must spend at the store to keep my family running. My husband suggested that I make it a practice to get food in one store and other items in a different store. I am about to do that.
Yes, many of your items are not grocery. Maybe you can separate them
These are so great! It’s a useful reminder for even us frugal people. My take away was watch what your people are ACTUALLY eating!
So true!
👏😀
Make a big batch of everyone's favorites (the kind that gets ate even as a left over). For mine it cold noodle salads, chili and homemade meat (chicken or turkey) sandwich spreads. Those are cheaper meals that can be extended a couple of days or incorporated into the week.
Love this idea
@@CentsibleLivingWithMoneyMom well thank you
Plan menu…shop your pantry…make a list and stick to it! I am a work in progress but this is what I strive for and I am like you Dawn I use cash! Thanks for all your great tips Dawn!
Great idea!!
I use the walmart app to make my shopping list. When the total gets too high, I look through the items and decide if I really need it. I can usually cut about $20 from my shop. I no longer by premade bacon bits. I make my own. I buy bacon when it's on sale for $1.99-$2.99 for the 12oz package. Chop it up and cook. I recently bought bacon bits because I was in a hurry. It was $2.99 for a less than 3oz bag. I also freeze fruit and veg before they go bad. I use the fruit in muffins and veg in soup.
Great tips!
Buy what you like and eat it all. I have stopped trying new things for the most part.
I have been starting to implement a lot of these suggestions and feel better about my shopping trips. Thank you!
So glad!
Good for you!
I buy "bagged" salad...small bag...
No waste...
That’s probably best for 1-2 people in the household. There’s 5 adults in my house that eat salad so I cut up my own.
@cjhoward409 yes...just me here so it works...
me too and I try to buy the ones made with cabbage and kale, they last for weeks and stay crunchy. If I don't use them what's left goes into my soup or stew.
I stopped going down the middle isles (unless I really need something there). All the items that are better for you are usually along the outside walls of the store anyway (fresh fruit and veggies, meat, dairy). 😊
Thanks for the tips!
You've come a long way in the past you're when it comes to saving money on groceries! These tips really help.
Thank you
I buy discount veggies always discounted food
Thank you I buy Oates sultanas soya milk for breakfast bake my own bread for sandwiches with an egg cheese salad filling
Notice how fast convenience foods and junk food goes, versus how long healthy real food lingers
good refresher for all of us, great hints, sometimes I don't look at the sales brochure, too much temptation, what I think I need opposed to what I REALLY need
I wonder if switching to different methods of cooking would help for instance ..maybe using a crock pot. when you normally didn't ?
I love crock pot meals. Always have leftovers and what doesn’t get eaten up the second day, gets frozen
Great idea
So do I
My idea …. Which may be diverting a bit from the original question would be for the occasional time a person may want fried food or French fries would be if you don’t normally eat this sorta thing it is less expensive to maybe buy this as at McDonald’s for example or on free fries Friday (with the app) once in awhile because the cost of cleaning up, the grease to fry and then the smell it leaves it is worth treating to go out when a d eAl is found or splitting with someone - that’s my idea -- also buying applesauce vs apples. Frozen fruit vs fresh. “Doctor up” your favorite canned chili to stretch it into two batches. Have a great day Dawn ! 😊
Great ideas
We got out of running back and forth to store, but recently we started it again. We recognize it, and are going to stop it again. It's just about being disciplined for us, but if y'all have ideals how to stop the cycle let me know. Love you Dawn and Have A Terrific Day❤
I love you
Plan your meals. Make a list for the grocery store, including all the ingredients you'll need for the dishes planned that you don't have on hand.
Easy.
A very careful and detailed inventory of what you have on hand.
An itemized list.
Only buy what you have on the list.
Carry only a certain amount of money on you.
No credit card.
No debit card.
Just cold,hard cash.
If it's not on the list it stays there.
Hi Money Mom. You can reduce your food budget by having a meatless Monday or just a vegetarian meal a few times a week
I usually shop with a list and do not usually deviate from it. Thanks for the tips - I have learned a lot.
You are so welcome!
Make a meal plan including all meals and snacks for the week. I usually do this after reviewing what I already have, the weekly store circular, and my coupons. Make a list. Go online and input the list on your store’s website. This allows you to see the total before you hit submit and you can adjust if necessary. Do store pickup. My store doesn’t charge for pickup. I haven’t been in my actual grocery store since COVID. Certainly saves on impulse buys.
Sounds great!
Great share, Dawn. You know me, grocery savings tips is what our videos focus on the most. So, just a few that have meant a lot to save us money is, one is that we need to know that sometimes stores do not have the unit cost marked correctly (or fairly divided across products) so you have to do the math yourself. Second, meal planning is huge. We recently went from doing meal plans for every 2 weeks and now we are doing a full one month meal plan now and that helps me to know what would be best to buy in bulk to last the whole month. So then I only have to go back for fresh produce a few times during the month. Best part, it is giving me more time to focus on other things than having to meal plan as often as I was.
I am glad you mentioned the unit price
Good baby steps!
Great advice Dawn. I buy just what I need. I look at ads and use digital coupons. Love fred meyer. I earn gas points
Love that!
Wonderful tips! I believe that everyone could use 1-2 of these tips to help them out not just beginners.
Absolutely!
Money mom dawn I think writing a list what you really need for the week might help look for sale items always. Start a garden soon if you can. Luv pa 🌼🌹🌷🌸🌻💫🌟✨
You are brilliant
I only buy T-bills.5.32 % interest..savings account at my credit union 4.5 %
I started buying milk in half gallons, less waste
Thank you for your helpful videos!
Glad you like them!
You can freeze milk, orange juice,, other juice, cheese. I buy them on sell.
Blessings and thank you 👍🏾☺️🌹
Same to you!
Great tips!
Glad you think so!
Add an extra dinner a week without meat(spaghetti, bean burritos etc.).
It is worth considering that when you start putting things back, you also may run out of food sooner, necessitating more frequent trips to the store, wasting more gas and time. Only if things are totally frivolous would putting things back make sense, I think. But even with that, it's food, and the more food you buy (at good prices) the fewer trips you'll make to the store.
I really like your 2nd idea!
I love these tips..especially the put one back! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thank you !
You're welcome!
Thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊
Best wishes and al rhe best to you Dawn and to the family as well.
Im wishing you and the family a fantastic day or evening when ever you read this comment.
I really enjoyed this video.
I try to go shopping every other week. I do buy some name breands on aome food items when its on sale. most of the time i buy the off brand. And i get the reduced items.
I have a list of items i get on a regular basis.
The store i go to has a food card and the store looks at what you buy and the store sends coupons on what i buy . I really appreciate that. And if some of the items are buy on get one free i get that . And i sometimes have a coupon that mybe loke . 50 sents or a 1.00 off as well as the free one . And when i go home i put the items away . And i but the free items in my food pantry. And the next time i go shopping i dont need to get that one item. That helps out alot and i really enjoy that. And i put a like on rhe video 👍
Thank you love
Cook one mail meal eat that for dinner throughout the week
I made too much potatoe mash. Two days later it is not tasty. So, I looked up online for dumpling/pierogi dough recipe. My tip: make pierogi or tortiljas with leftover food.
Thank you
Look at cost per unit.
For example, say your local grocery store has past on sale.
You see two boxes, both are $.80 per box.
One is 10ounces,the other is 75 ounces.
Both same price.
Which one gives more bang for the buck?
Great tips
Have a list and stick to it and do not take your kids shopping with you.
Not spending on groceries Friday Saturday sunday Monday use up food from freezer fridge I put things back at the supermarket I have choices
Love that!
My husband bought a name brand bread. It just sat on the counter, never opened. The bread molded. He bought another loaf. I took some out put it a container that’s supposed to make it last longer. I gave the rest to my Son & his family.
Freeze it, take out when needed
@@pennynickels5216
He doesn’t like it after it’s been frozen. Just like his Mother
@@sherrisaunders622 I toast mine.
He doesn’t want it toasted
@sherrisaunders622 he doesn't make it easy does he? lol. I used to make a dough you mix up and can leave in fridge for 2 weeks. You just bake as needed.
My 27;year old married daughter at home does that buy ingredients used them once then throw them away
Help! An adult child has never saved money and is not frugal. They blow through their paychecks. It’s hard to watch. Will they ever change?
I think they will
I hate my twin daughter throwing away litres of milk once used dips uneaten fruit then going buying same ingredients again lives at home is married on disability wonders why groceries are so expensive duh
I hear you
Money Mom, thank you as always for your videos. They're very helpful and you brighten my day! God Bless you, Dawn!🪻🌷🪻
You are so welcome
I always look for mardown stickers. Shop loss leaders, if you planned on bbq chicken legs on thursday , see if leg quarters are cheaper per pound. Buy a smaller meat portion- instead of a 2lb london broil get 1 1/2 lbs and add another side. That is $5 right there!
