Talking about why they didnt get more popular: They were on the edge of having their big breakthrough (Touring with Metallica in Australia, for example) but the bandmembers had mixed feelings about getting really big. Coming from this really small and undergound desertscene, some of the members wanted to keep it that way. And also Josh Homme, the guitar player, wanted something different for himself. He went creatively in a different direction and started "Queens of the Stone Age". So, they disbanded before they hit big succes.... and that way Kyuss become a legend

    • @corey1788
      @corey1788 2 роки тому +2

And according to several stories Homme turned into a total douche when the remaining members wanted to continue with Kyuss. It got pretty ugly and ended up in court. Lost all interest in anything Homme has been involved in after Kyuss.

    • @TheFryBr
      @TheFryBr 2 роки тому +12

@@corey1788 well, I think as always there's two sides of the story... When Garcia went on to perform Kyuss-Songs in 2010 Homme was alright with it and there's even video-footage where he was hanging out backstage at a festival where Garcia performed and he nodded his head to the music. I think the problem was that at first Garcia wanted to go on tour with the old Kyuss-Songs to promote his new solo-project, but that never happened. Instead he just went on touring and touring with the old material other old members from Kyuss joined the bandwagon and the whole thing became what Kyuss never was supposed to be: a moneymaking machine. Then Garcia, Brant Bjork and Olivier wanted to record a new album under name of Kyuss Lives and that was the point where Homme wanted to stop the thing and started a lawsuit. And in a way I can understand that. He was the main creative force behind Kyuss, recording anything under this band name without him being involved, wouldn't have done justice to this name. He wanted to protect his legacy, which is his right. Also, Scott Reeder joined him in this lawsuit and as far as I know, he is a very chilled and nice guy.
But I can understand everybody who says Homme's music after Kyuss is not for me.... It's very different.

Whitewater is a national park and that area is where they played those legendary generator parties where they developed that sound. They jammed their songs because they never wanted the vibe to stop. They really were playing music for their tribe to dance to under the desert stars. It was never meant to be big they were playing for their tribe. They never had roadies. They loaded in and loaded out. It was very diy. A diy scene for desert kids with nothing to do and all the bands sounded unique because copying each other was sacrilege. Honestly it’s pretty amazing that shit even happened and was exposed to the outside world

Just to be clear, "Lick Doo" is a hidden song on the CD, so it's part of track 10 which is the track corresponding to "Whitewater", but it's just a little unlisted bonus at the end of the CD stuck on there as a joke. Ryan, the silence between them *is* the separation you were asking for; the fact that they're paired together in this way is an artifact of how the tracks and songs are encoded on the CD. When you evaluate "Whitewater" in your head, you really shouldn't count "Lick Doo" in that.

"Hidden bonus tracks" were all the rage back then. A long pause at the end of the "last track" of the album, gives way to a throwaway joke track. There are other ways of doing it, but that was the most popular because you could do it on a vinyl album or CD.
    Rich the Ancient Metal Beast

  • @PalmDesertRock

There are other songs where Garcia's vocals are mixed more in the foreground, but this just sounds like the band is playing _right here_ while Garcia's _over there_ in the kitchen yelling from the adjacent room. But it just works. They're often described as sounding like a sandstorm, and this song is a great example for this. The warm, calm intro, the sudden burst of raspy sand blasting into your face followed by the calm after the storm when nothing is left but serenity and warmth.
Also, Tool covered this band before. I've had a live bootleg from Tool playing Demon Cleaner over 15 years ago. I think the comparisons are fine.
A last bit of trivia: they recorded this album in a few days, and the record company kept bugging them that they should produce a single that they could play on the radio and market to people. But the band wasn't interested in playing by the rules imposed on them, so when this album first released, it had only 3 "suites", each comprised of multiple songs and each much too long for a single release. Josh Homme still laughs when he remembers the faces of the record company's representatives.

The sound of Kyuss was "cultivated" They had their thing that was influenced by the Joshua Tree scene at the time. A friend / producer, Chris Goss basically shepherded them through their albums as he did not want them to lose the the "sound" they had and become "commercial". He was successful, a pretty unique band that inspired dozens of copycats, but was never commercially successful.
Eventually Josh Homme became disillusioned with having to be tied to "the sound" and left to form Queens of the Stone Age later. Another great band.

The one track you picked is not entirely representative of their catalog because of how diverse their influences are. Conventional rock choice: "The Mob Goes Wild"; blues rock choice: "Electric Worry"; prog influenced: "Burning Beard".

So many signs that no one really saw before he died. 2009 he was just blowing up and having run with friends still not knowing how much his life was about to change and how he wanted to go back… it goes even deeper when you listen to the song “ One last thing” one blue slide park he closes it out with him saying how he just wanted to go back home

Kyuss is great…this is where stoner metal begins. If you’re digging this, set up a Fu Manchu station on Pandora…you’ll get hammered with similar music. I discovered Truckfighters this way, and you’ll get a lot of Clutch too who are IMHO one of the best and most underrated bands of our time. Naturally, you’ll get a lot of Queens of the Store Age, probably the most commercially successful stoner bands. Josh Homme started out in Kyuss and ended up in QOTSA.You’re absolutely right about that Hendrix influence. It’s amazing, Hendrix has been dead over 50 years and still shaping musicians everywhere. Truly a rock legend!
Tool is totally different thing, even of there’s a cross-appeal.

Best reaction I’ve seen from you boys in a while (maybe because it’s Kyuss…). George nailed it with his pure feeling of this song and the Tool-esque trance vibe it puts you into. On the flip side I find it weird that this deep into your journey into this world that Ryan is still thrown off by distortion/fuzz but that’s the joy of the joy of the pure listener reaction. I’d love to see you guys do Slo Burn - Pilot The Dune. Same singer as Kyuss, dare I say a bit more accessible but just generally a big banger (don’t worry Ryan it’s a little less fuzzy)

So, in the 90s its was pretty common to have tracks on CDs that were "hidden" in some fashion: unlisted in album notes and track listing (this was often compounded by having one or more "blank" tracks between the last listed track and the hidden track; IIRC Marilyn Mason did that with one of his CDs, putting a hidden song at track 99); some you had to "rewind" to before Track 1; and some were just tacked on at the end of tracks after a period of silence.
You know how hi-hop artists did the skits on their disks between tracks? Same idea; this was rock and metal's version of it. Lick Doo should absolutely be considered a separate track/piece of music and not at all part of Whitewater.

Since you both love Kyuss and Tool y'all should check out TOOL's cover of Kyuss's Demon Cleaner (and maybe do a comparison between the two and see how you feel about both versions as they are both awesome!!!!
There are quite a few variations of the live audio of the song, most aren't the best quality. But there's one from their late '97, through '98-'99 mini-tours that actually features Kyuss's bassist Scott Reeder on second bass! Hearing and feeling two bassists on that version is just, wow!
The mini-tours were epically insane to behold... they'd do some covers (more than usual at least for them and their fans were getting to witness them live) most of which features guest artists...like their cover of Peach's "You Lied" which features Buzz from The Melvins on second guitar perfectly complimenting what Adam is doing (Peach was Justin's band before joining Tool during the recording process of Ænima) and Justin sings backing vocals and harmonizes with Maynard. It's also a slower tempo version by comparison, which drastically and dynamically changes the song in such a unique way, and of course they make it their own as with any cover they've ever done.
During that time, and up to a couple years after they covered:
    "Demon Cleaner" by Kyuss.
    "Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent.
    "You Lied" by Peach.
    "Commando" by Ramones.
    "B'Boom" by King Crimson.
    "Soundscapes" by Robert Fripp.
    "Some Days It's Dark" by
    Death Lurks.
"A Passage To Bangkok" by Rush.
    "Spasm" also by Peach.
    "No Quarter" by Led Zeppelin.
    "Holiday In Cambodia" by
    Dead Kennedys.
Most of these should be delved into in y'all's downtime off camera as it takes a little time to find all the versions with decent audio quality.
But at some point definitely react to Kyuss's "Demon Cleaner" and TOOL's version featuring Scott Reeder on second bass!!!!
Definitely gotta keep going through stoner rock genre tho, we all know you will love those eargasms!

One thing that set Kyuss apart from other stoner metal bands is that they were more psychedelic/jam-based. Bands like Electric Wizard and Sleep tended to be slower and would settle into more consistent riffs/grooves. That fuzzy guitar tone is indeed THE signature sound for stoner rock. Very akin to wandering around in a haze of marijuana smoke, and the psychedelic, groovy, repetitive riffs play into that aesthetic too. It's true that this isn't well-produced by classic standards, but it very much creates its own unique atmosphere that you couldn't get with cleaner production.
Kyuss definitely didn't get their due, but a major reason was that they only released albums for 4 years before splitting. They were definitely appreciated by those into underground alternative rock music, and by the time Homme came out with Queens of the Stone Age the world was finally ready for that sound. Of course, QOTSA also had more mainstream appeal with poppier hooks and cleaner production. That bit at the end, Lick Doo, was just a throwaway mini-track they used to close the album. For some reason, the original release of this album was split into 3 tracks, essentially treating the songs as suites. I think later releases did split up the songs into separate tracks, so I don't know why Lick Doo was on the end of this track.
