Drums & Coffee!
🥁☕🙌
QueensOTSA are amazing live musicians
This was THE song that made me fall in love with drums.
🙌
Nice 😂 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Phil Collins "in the air tonight" is where I fell in love with drums. Nirvana's "in bloom" is where I became a big fan of Dave grohl.
That's awesome. Coincidentally, the song that inspired the opening drum part (Black Flag - Slip it in), got me into drums. Pretty wild
@@cliffphps7447 dave grohl does the best version of in bloom, because the demo version of in bloom was played by another drummer before dave in nirvana
Dave's work as a drummer in QOTSA and "Them Crooked Voltures" is the best of his long career. It is evident that there has been a great maturation that was not there yet in the Nirvana period. The record "Songs For The Deaf" in my opinion remains the jewel in his crown.
What an absolute powerhouse musician
Not really. Nirvana just required more simple drumming.
@@chetsenior7253 I agree, but one statement doesn't exclude the other. Nirvana needed a simpler style, but Dave has matured a lot over the years.
Totally agree my favorite QOTSA album
We also need to take into consideration... For most of his career now, he's not been the drummer in the band!
Can you imagine his progression if he'd never moved into the front man, guitarist, song writer role!?
The thing to really talk about here is the vocal ability of Mark Lanegan. Absolute pioneer.
Slammin'
One of the most underrated singers of the generation. Did amazing work with Screaming trees, Mad River and many others. Loved his cover of Nutshell!!! Look it up!!!
@@cpm7414 Screaming Trees are one of my absolute favourites. Dude was a genius.
A legend
Mad season 🥰 everything he’s touched is pure gold
Can confirm, after attempting to learn even just the intro to this song, Dave Grohl drum parts are not easy. You are 100% correct. No, they are not complicated licks/chops, but to play it clean, with feel, with that hi-hat going, at that tempo...sweating.
That's what everyone misses.
Playing the notes vs making it feel as bad a** as Grohl is the difficult part
Not complicated? Have you checked the outro for this song? The dude is absolutely transcendent.
The whole album is superb. As a Dave Grohl fan you need it in your life.
Yup!
it is but he doesn't play drums on every song.
@@marsman6Gene Trautmann only played on two tracks. 85% of the drums are Dave Grohl
Love this song , and Grohls nod to Black Flag’s ‘slip it in’ at the start of the song is awesome !!!
Dave Grohl is probably my favourite all-time rock drummer. And this album (Songs for the Deaf) is probably my favourite all-time rock album. The drumming throughout is fantastic.
Yes Sean.
Absolute inspiration in basically every way
Grohl played with QOTSA (Queens Of The Stone Age) a lot, also teamed up with guitarist/genius Josh Homme in the band Them Crooked Vultures.
Everything Josh Homme touches is 100% authentic Rock. He played with Kyuss, started QOTSA and Them Crooked Vultures, was responsible for The Desert Sessions (up to 12 now), he also helped a friend start The Eagles of Death Metal. Wow.
Awesome info. 🙏
Worth mentioning the third member of Them Crooked Vultures happens to be John Paul Jones, of Led Zeppelin fame!
That connection of strings to drums so natural so brutal….the lost art of keeping a dangerous pocket….
👌
Love queens so much, Josh has been exceptional without getting mainstream push. Fantastic
So good
What I absolutely love about Dave's playing is the intensity. With the exception of Nirvana's Unplugged, whenever he's behind that kit, he beats it like it not only owes him money, but also like it offended his mum. An absolute delight to watch every time.
Even on Unplugged, they had to get him to play with brushes because he was just too damn loud.
Queens of the Stone Age are a kick ass band period.
Grohl and Homme are musical brothers. This performance is awesome and is a real intro to future performances with Them Crooked Vultures, which Homme and Grohl are joined with John Paul Jones. Dave’s drumming with TCV is some of the most enjoyable rock drumming of the last 20 years
I don’t know the music of TCV! Heard great things
@@AndrewRooneyDrumsif you didn't know (maybe you've listened by now) but the band has John Paul Jones in it (it's him, grohl, and homme the red headed guitarist here)
I covered this song in college for my final term project. It was one of the most difficult things at gratifying things I’ve ever done. Queens became my favorite band at that time and they still are nearly 20 yrs later.
As a non-drummer who appreciates good drumming without knowing the technical aspects or terms it was really fun watching you break this down. Thanks!
Thanks Josh! 🙏
Love Queens of the stone age! The singer Mark Lanergan just passed away awhile ago. He's great. Bassist Nick Oliveri plays in a stoner band with Brant Bjork now. Anything Josh Homme is involved in is good. Josh played with Dave and John Paul Jones in the band Them Crooked Vultures. Good stuff. Thanks Andrew.
All of them just class
He was in this song. Look and see. You must not know your queens. Sorry bud
@@chadjohnson5577 he didn't say anything to discourage your post..
@@rkdrama2443 some guy replied to my post saying Mark wasn't the singer. I tried to reply to him and must have posted to the wrong message.
@@chadjohnson5577 ah fair enough mate lol thought you lost the plot for a sec lol
Dave is laying into that kit with a violence that actually brings tears to my eyes, but despite the intro being fairly complex, he's playing it with consummate ease and enjoying the fuck out of it while he does so.
I'm not gonna lie, it took me a whole day (8+ hours) to learn the intro pattern to this song and another week before I could play it passably.
Dave is probably the best rock drummer of his generation, and one of the best of all time.
I'm not sure Dave is even the best drummer of his generation. I'm sure he'd put Chad Smith, Matt Cameron and Danny Carey well above himself. I'd certainly say Matt Cameron is more technical as well as a powerful timekeeper. Just an awesome drummer. But nobody, NOBODY comes close to the sound of Dave pummelling his kit like it owes him money AND insulted his mother.
One of the best to ever do it IMO!
If I didn't have so many bills, I was gonna do a PayPal for either this or a song from Them Crooked Vultures, same singer/guitar player as Queens and bass player from Led Zeppelin
I grew up with Dave and Kurt. Started playing drums and guitar at 13. Now 37. And it took me awhile to calm down the intensity of my drumming. Started playing with jazz bands and blues rock bands, and had so many "hey there.. maybe work your dynamics a little? WE CAN'T HEAR OUR GUITARS!" LOL. He's my hero. Also one of the best and intense yells.
Great stuff William. So much passion
His weight when playing, his ultra personal sound, his brutal way of attacking. Dave could be playing just 1 trick, and still everyone would be watching and listening, that's the beauty of his art ... 💀 🤘 🥁
Yup he has an incredible signature. One of a kind
Dave is my favorite drummer. He kills it every time.😊❤
One of the all time greats
Grohl's drumming is always fun. Check out his guest performance on Killing Joke's self-titled album from 2003. Epic.
Thanks! I will
He ended up playing on that Killing joke album after KJ won a lawsuit over Nirvana stealing some riffs from them, to settle Dave agreed to play drums with them.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums The album is called the Death and Resurrection show!
@@seabasssimpson4547 lol that was more of a joke than anything, he was a gigantic fan of the band and they loved his playing.
Grohl's short drum solo from this show on the song "Avon" is awesome and worth checking out.
I was there watching this, I could hear the drums from about 2 miles away and realised I was missing them. Amazing performance.
DAMN!
I was too! We were right at the side and couldn't see Dave. Only found out he was playing drums later on. He definitely looks like he's chemically enhanced in this clip!
The dead air stop in the mid-ish part of the song is PERFECTLY in time when it starts up again. Count it out. It's fucking nuts.
It seems Dave has the golden touch. Well, for me he can't do much wrong in the way of music. He is a Monster.
Yup. 100% golden touch
I saw them during this tour, best live performance I’ve ever witnessed. The live version of God Is In The Radio is almost unbelievable.
Queens of the stone age is where Dave Grohl shines the most for me. He can totally smash and make your jaw drop to the ground, but he also can enhance the song in very subtle way like he did with the song from ...Like Clockwork (incrediblr album btw)
He's a phenomenal musician all round.
Improves anything he plays on
If Dave played the same sizes kit here as he did in Nirvana, the set is probably 24 kick, 15" rack, 18" floor, together with a 22" ride, 18" and 20" crashes and 15" hats. Such an awesome drummer, the sheer power and intensity, biggest inspiration i ever had, drumming-wise. The main reason i still love playing in a Nirvana-tribute after 13 years, it just never gets old.
15 rack!!
Absolute beast. Perfect rock drummer
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Such a likeable guy as well. Have you seen Studio 666 yet? Dave made a horrormovie together with the rest of Foo Fighters and it is absolutely brilliant. So much fun. It will never win any oscars, but three words: decapitation by cymbal.
Dave is the whole reason I started playing drums. So glad to see he kept his headlights on the road of rock. He’s been a great influence for so many.
When Rated R came out, I saw QOTSA play in a Towers Records parking lot. Soooo good!
AWESOME Teri!
i love this queens of the stone age time, they'd had a bad time recording an album, they all took a break from each other and dave went off and did this and had fun. taylor kind of resented it, but when they got back together and re-recorded the album it was awesome.
and to play guitar and write songs just as good as his drumming… phenomenal…. and the fact that he spends hours hookin up the crowd with some great bbq.. what can’t he do.. and he’s humble about it.. cool dude
Unreal John. Legend 🙌
My friend and I were just talking about this performance. watch it more often than probably any other live performance. So freaking good
Must review…. Them Crooked Vultures, Dave Grohl, Jon Paul Jones and Josh Homme. Live at Austin City Limits. Great production.
Yes Michael! 🙌
i came for the same recommendation for Andrew... Them Crooked Vultures drums are insane!!
He started teaching himself at home as a kid using 2 pens on a beanbag before he got himself a drum kit, amazing guy. Also one of my heroes. I'd love to sit and smash a few Jacks and coke with him and talk music. Good stuff Andrew! Loving your channel
Cheers
Harro 😁🤘
Yup he's got that guy next door vibe about him. Down to earth
Which is what most kids do who want to drum....
Song for the Deaf live is a killer performance as well.
I was at this gig. It was brilliant. One of the best things I've seen at Glastonbury and I've been 8 times.
Saw iggy pop a few years ago band was so crazy good. Josh Homme was the band leader and they killed it. Seen hundreds of shows over last 50 years and was super impressed
Amazing Rick 🙏
Dave Grohl, is just an Amazing person. He is sooo talented. Love him. He's a Phenom! Amazing!
I was there, the whole set was banging, best performance of the whole weekend
Not to mention that the final drum lead into this song is an homage to the legendary drummer Bill Stevenson of Black Flag /Descendents from the Black Flag song "Slip It In"...
OMG!
Was hoping someone would point that out! A return to the punk classics.
I grew up as a Grohl fan as I was a huge fan of hard core , especially the NYC and DC areas. SCREAM was a great band!!!
A heavy hitter great performance that's all that needs to be said
Yup. Unparalleled rock star drumming
Nirvana is probably my favorite band and i always loved Ghrol’s drumming especially in Nevermind, but man in Songs for the Deaf he really shines in a unique way. Definitely my fav drummer
He’s a monster
Don’t see anyone having mentioned but the songs intro/bit was lifted with love from Black Flags “Slip It In”. Great video, awesome album all around.
Thank you!
Dave will tell you how he does disco beats and revamps them. Still killer how he shows up and out. One of my top ten for sure
This is one of the hardest drum tracks of all time. Period. Dave Grhol absolutely murdered this track/performance. I don't know how he didn't bust a skin during this.
Adam and Joe introducing QOTSA, they look so young!
Analysis is so accurate! He'll of a vid. Cheers 🍻
THANK YOU!
On the album Dave recorded the cymbals separate. That’s how he got that drum sound on “songs for the deaf”.
Has nothing to do with that. It has to do that the room they were in was too small to set up the kit properly so he recorded cymbals and drums in different takes
@@jd0879 the bad call against the lions took points away and took the lead away with 25 seconds left in the game.
That whole album 'songs for the deaf' is a great drum album, Dave Grohl executed it brilliantly, even after 20 years I'm still learning from it, the rolling triplets at the end of 'song for the dead' are powerful, goes up a gear when he chuck's in the snare flams aswell, superb stuff.
Love the flight of the conchords shirt. My brother introduced me to them when we were kids and theyre near and dear to my heart🤣
HA! Awesome
Lets take a second to recognize the genius that is Homme here... Hes the twisted soul that brought this masterpiece to life.....
For sure
Thunderous is how the drums sound, “devastating” is perfect.
Goosebumps every damn time. That sound is just huge.
Yup. Unbelievable
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I have to say that mind eraser no chaser by them crooked vultures is peak grohl. Monster sound and the exchange of vocals with josh homme is 👏
Request: "Refused - The Deadly Rhythm" - live by David Sandstrom.
From the same Concert - the song "Avon" with Grohl pounding away is one of my favorites as well!
And Regular John, and Feel Good Hit Of The Summer...
he's a walking drum machine. he can literally play jazz, rock, metal, black metal. i bet he would easily blast beat
I stated play drums thanks to him! 🔥🤘🏽 great video!
the british 'geezers' are Adam Buxton & Joe Cornish, tv, radio and podcasting legends.
hello Andrew and thanks for all your passion for drumming and drummers world wide.
One drummer who is closest to my heart is John Wright from Nomeansno,i have had the pleasure of seeing John play live many times and talked with him,he is a realy nice guy as well.
it would be great if you could take a look at some videos of him in the future.

Greetings from Norway
Dave is known , for most of the time , when he is drumming in the studio to only needing one take . He is a human metronome .
Absolute beast and natural drummer/musician
Listen to "Play" , the 16 minute song he did on his own.
He records the drums without in ears on, its crazy
@@afonsoferreira5171 The music is in his head already .
Was there, the performance was incredible!
I bought this album in 2002 because Dave was drumming on it and I have to say it surprised me. It was so different, even to Nirvana. I've listened to it so many times over the last 20 years and for me the drumming is one of the highlights. Also, it would be worth reviewing God is the Sun by QOTSA, which I'm pretty sure is also Dave. It's in 3/4 which is really unusual for a rock song.
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands, nuff said.
Absolutely savage rock song Dallas
Due to space I have not played drums in a long time, but I still have an appreciation of them. I am by no means a professional, but I enjoy hearing your opinion. Drums are the driving force behind a band, absolutely essential. In the 30 or so years since I gave up on drums and went to guitar, I still think a bit like a drummer. Keep it up, Andrew.
Thanks Lee!
Okay dude if you really dig that, you need to have a looksey, listensey, to another Dave Grohl / Josh Homme project. "Them Crooked Vultures" featuring John Paul Jones on bass adds to the overall kick-ass-ness. I would provide a link but any track or performance will do. "Elephants" is my personal fave. Enjoy, and you're welcome! P.S. Josh is the real genius behind all this. Dave is lucky to be a part of it. I know he is genius in his own right, Foo Fighters, etc. You are a drum enthusiast and I get it, but all must bow down to Josh. Everything he does is incred!
I always have to restart that a few times before listening to the full thing..
HA! Yup Joe
THE best drum intro ever made 💪🏼
I was there watching that in '02 and it was phenomenal
I bet Dan!
Wow, 25k subs in a month! Congrats!
🙌
Happy i was sober that moment♥️
👌🙌
The back story for this album from the first to last track is Josh hommes trip from band practice back home to Joshua Tree
Hey Andrew..QOTSA should have been a bigger band then they were..Such an under rated super group..I had to stop the vid and stand up and say thank you to Dave Grohl..Right after Andrew mentioned the snare hi hat work in the midst of all that open cymbal work Dave drops in a single hit on the bell of the ride.. Mario Duplantier please stand up..What an ending..Great performance great vid.. Peace ☮️
i mean they're still a band.. there's still time.. but agreed, by now they should be massive.
@@AlldayAudio Now that Dave may have some time away from the Foos maybe they'll do something..Dave is and was one of my main influences learning to play..Peace ✌️
This is a a absolutely phenomenal. Can’t say enough. God tier rock n roll 🥁🙌
They should be massive. But they're too unique for mainstream. People miss them a lot. Hopefully people will catch on.
@@pitpride1220 Agreed. They are still huge and it goes to show there genius since, you’re right on , since they are so unusual and dark
Legendary performance.... Glastonbury 2002 overall was one of the best ever.
Just smashed it. Can't imagine what it was like to see this explosion live
@@AndrewRooneyDrumsjust a shame Lostprophets were also there...
You should totally check out that record, and all of the Queens albums for that matter. Solid gold 😂
See you in hell
Been playing guitar 17 years, bass for about half that, singing the whole time too. I'm about a week into learning drums with the goal of at least attempting to play through this whole album someday. It's fair to say this performance is what really lit a fire under me to pick up drums and make it happen.
One of my favorite bands of all time, #1 on most days 🤘
That’s awesome Tony! 👌
Never heard this. Wish I had when it was first out! Incredible band
Phenomenal stuff Jonathan
“Songs for the Deaf” is an incredible album. Decade-defining.
Oh yeah, just started the video, but have watched this live footage before, and know that it is epic
Sure is Adam
This is pure fucking rock man. They killed it
Yup. Just smashed it
This was great. So many people take Dave Grohl for granted. This song never got radio play, but QOTSA fans know and love it. Especially with how killer those drums are. It has been a set closer many times, and it’s actually rare for a QOTSA show to not include it. QOTSA’s current drummer is Jon Theodore. He’s pretty great as well 😁
Thanks Linda! I don’t know much about Theodore. I need to check him out 🥁👌
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Theodore is the drummer on the first 3 Mars Volta albums, imo just about the most creative modern drum work around
If you're listening to Mars Volta and Them Crooked Vultures for the first time soon then you're in for a treat
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Check out One Day As A Lion as well, more of Jon Theodore crushing it.
Song for the dead has turned my whole perception of what rock music is upside down. That was an overload for my tiny teenage brain in 2002, so even without the airplay, they've managed to f. up many heads with it
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I've seen QOSTA four times since the early days (not with Grohl unfortunately) and the last time with Theodore was the best yet... He's fabulous!
Yeah, THAT outro at the very end is pure 🔥🔥🔥
100%
I was there it was magnificent. It was powerful and had so much drive.
Notice how at 10:02 mark Josh Homme was watching for Dave Grohl’s count to cue back in! Dave is driving that song!!!
It is a legendary album. And a legendary life performance. Just brilliant. Comic Sans rule)))
Grohl is like the rug in Big Lebowski's living room... he keeps the band together.
🤣👌
This is the best drum intro.
Unreal. 🙌
"Simple" music is the hardest to play convincingly. Anyone can be impressive by playing a ton of notes. It takes a great musician to play with space, consistency, and accuracy. Think "When the Levee Breaks". It's that measured perfection from Bonham. Simple ain't easy.
YUP!
You should check out my interview with John Hammond (Nashville session legend).
We get right into simple vs easy. You will love it
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Will do. Thanks for the heads up.
@@Robert_Herring you will dig it!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Just checked the interview out. Fantastic stuff.
play simple, play complicated, it shouldn’t be a concern, both have nothing to do with the value of Art and both have their virtues
I don't know if there are any golfers on here but i always imagine that a worn set of dave grohl's drums would be similar to a warn golf club of Tiger Woods or another pga great. One dark, worn out area...only on the sweet spot. Amazing
You nailed it!
Greatest Drum Entrance of All Time! 😎
Dave Grohl needs to be on drums...he's a master of his craft. His playing on Them Crooked Vultures is epic. Thanks for sharing, never saw this video before. \^^/
Hi Andrew, I was driving down the street after work and was listening to Bad Religion. The song "Anasthesia" came on and I was so digging the drums that I thought of you. I've been a fan and subscriber for YEARS!. I've made several requests over the years and I haven't seen you react to any of them, but this is another one that I think you would enjoy and introduce you to another band you haven't reacted to yet. Hope you're interested. I truly believe you would be impressed, especially with the last minute of this short song. Thanks Andrew. Peace!
Thanks Chris! Sounds great
Don’t be afraid to remind me. There are a lot of requests and comments to remember 🤯
That phrase, "every hit from Grohl sounds like a sample", is so true. He sounds like he´s got the best of human and robot.
Just that look on his Dave's face says it all so determined and focused...
Totally kick ass / I loved that line up of Queens; heaviest stoner rock ever. And I love Troy Van Leuween’s other worldly space vibe - like Ace Frehley; enigmatic.
All the dudes have such strong characters - all of them are stars on the stage. Just fantastic.
So good!
This the definition of serving the song.
Lol that aliens meme got me cracking up pretty good 🤣
8:30 'I have to do a cover of this." Hope you still feel the same after hearing the double-time sections and that mad triplet groove at the end? I'd love to hear it!
Yup it got intense!
I'll look into it :)
