This is the first time i've seen them look genuinely uncomfortable during a reaction. Especially Ryan making self-pacifying gestures with his hands throughout the whole video, lol
This track and album were really Electric Wizard at their most extreme. Think back to Dream Theater: remember how you guys heard Metropolis first? Well, that was kinda DT at their most extreme too. These are the tracks that either made people hate these bands or fall in love with them. Electric Wizard, especially, is all about that SOUND. You're meant to get high as shit, crank the music, and just drown in the overpowering aesthetic and forget about everything else. That said, Electric Wizard definitely toned it down a bit after this and released a lot of stuff that was far more accessible. Something like See You In Hell or Black Mass or Flowers of Evil are far easier listens. Not saying you'd love any of those, but if you like the heaviness but are just turned off by how it's too much, you might dig those more.
IMO their most extreme album is the follow up to Dopethrone, Let us Prey. But perfect trilogy with Come my Fanatics..., Dopethrone and Let us Prey is really dark, heavy and trippy.
Believe me, when I was a beginner in Electric Wizard's discography, I felt the same way. It took me many listenings to really appreciate their music. Now I'm a big fan of the band it's really easy for me to decipher their songs and the structure of the songs. Feel free to come back to this band, because it is really worth it.
This band was definitely a tough one for me at first, too. Definitely one to ease into in order to really understand what’s going on. I think this was a little too much for them so early in their doom exploration. I think they should’ve listened to Wizard Bloody Wizard first, or really sat with some less intense doom for a while before jumping into Dopethrone. Maybe they’ll revisit one day...would be interesting to see the change in perspective once a bit more immersed in the purpose of the music, which is to embrace the emotional ride rather than to combat it with how you want to feel in the moment.
This was def diff, but this was cool, the vocals grew on me, but that instrumentation, those riffs were epic!!! and the drums were great!! Hope to see this marathon continue!
Ryan's struggle is prelude to him becoming an all out psychotic Electric Wizard fanatic! :P For real, I haven't listened to this song in a minute but there are definitely more Electric Wizard songs that are really heavy and groovy and don't seem to fall apart the way "Funeralopolis" does. This song is extreme anger and disgust being expressed and I think its for a valid reason. I'm sure there are some Electric Wizard songs you could groove too and enjoy at least a little bit.
For me the whole point of this album is to lose yourself in the wall of distorted clipping noise. I don't really care about weed culture wouldn't say I'm a stoner, but listening to this stoned is an experience
Umm guys it's a fuzz pedal with with extreme clipping and a scooped out mids. You all need to go read up on the gear that makes these sound. Of course it's heavily clipped it's a square wave being sent to the Amp.
Haven't even watched yet, but... THIS is a milestone reaction! Never clicked on something so fast. EDIT: 13:40 Ryan was obviously joking when he said that The Wizard wasn’t trying to appeal to anybody, but he's actually on point about that. Pretty sure Jus Osbourne (Lead Vocals/Guitar) has said they were all pretty much aiming to get as fucked on drugs and alcohol as possible and record the most repulsive piece of music ever conceived, and I think they succeeded at their goal, which is why it works so well. I love it. This song will grow on you. More Electric Wizard to check out:.... Stone Magnet, Wizard in Black, Dunwich, Dopethrone, The Barbarian Also, the name of the band is taken from two Black Sabbath songs. Thought you guys should know since y'all love Sabbath so much.
Mad respect to you both. I’ve been watching you guys do your thing for many years. I appreciate the honesty, the realness. This band is not meant to be contained in a recording. They are meant to be experienced live. Doom is such a powerful genre to experience live. Huge speaker stacks and the weight of the music hitting your body and soul.
I'll also add that George is right on the money - this song feels unsettling, but there's a place in music for songs that make you feel that way. Just like horror movies may be frightening or unsettling, music can also be used to make you a bit uncomfortable! But please listen to something by Fu Manchu next, they're a classic stoner rock band and not at all hard to listen to. For something laidback I would suggest No Dice.
I really feel Electric Wizard is a future favorite for you guys. Satanic Rites of Drugula or the Chosen Few next please! They’ve got riff power only rivaled by Black Sabbath
The Sabbath worship of Electric Wizard is great Named after 2 Black Sabbath songs: Electric funeral and The wizard EW first album is selftitled like the first Sabbath one and they use the same font for the name on those
A huge part of doom/stoner metal vocals that is very different production-wise than other types of metal vocals, is the breathing. Doom vocals especially get the heavy inhale to heavy exhale in the mic, that adds to the sharpness of taking in a breath to warn the listener to the sigh of damnation afterwards. It's a really key, common feature in this genre of music and adds to the unsettling nature of things. It's not something that you'd pick out right away, but once you notice it makes a lot of sense.
This is easily my favorite review they’ve done. Their reaction is so real, visceral, and you can see this took an actual mental and physical toll on both of them. We need more. Hail the Wizard!
Well you did it guys, you listened to the heaviest song ever made and lived to tell the tale. I think you need some groovier stoner stuff now, Orange Goblin, Windhand, Desert Storm, DOWN, Uncle Acid, Kylesa, All Them Witches.
In terms of other stoner metal/rock bands, "prehistoric Dog" by Red Fang is a good one. "The Incomparable Mr. Flannery" by Clutch is also great. "Iron Swan" or "Cloak of Feathers" by The Sword if you wanted to revisit them.
Oh look, finally someone who has both: 1) heard enough variety to make recommendations other than the obvious and 2) actually paid attention to what LIV enjoy! And they're on topic with the genre of the marathon!? Burn the witch!
Electric Wizard is my favorite band and I would have started y'all on Return Trip from Come My Fanatics. Lots more groove. If you want instrumental from them check out Mountains of Mars, I guarantee you will both love it.
I think you guys would enjoy their song “Dunwich” It’s got the heaviness and the power, but it’s a little less distorted vocally and a good deal more streamlined with a very satisfying chorus. Might be worth checking out for you, reaction or not
ISIS - So Did We Cult of Luna - Dim I feel like these two songs are a good gateway into this kind of style in the sense that they’re just as slow and plodding but with a more melodic and “clean” approach.
I feel the same way about doom. Love the guitar tones and heaviness but I can't listen to it for longer periods. I'd rather listen to death metal at that point. Give me some Baest from Denmark and I'm good.
@@Herringboner check out Gatecreeper's new record, "An Unexpected Reality," the first half is noisy, brutal, ignorant blast-beat filled each metal, the second half is a single droney, doom-filled, sludgefest.

When they played my town in 2000 they were so pissed they couldn't play! Hilarious but still one of my fave bands ever. Went downhill since his wife joined in my opinion but still good shit.

the cool thing is Ryan said this song gets him feeling the aggressive nature of the song, where as I've always loved this song but for me it was the opposite, i recognised the aggressiveness but it's always made me feel more openly emotional, the honesty in the raw emotions make me feel that way. I think it's the mark of a great song to give off multiple diverse emotions from the same piece.
Once you get over the "this is too much" hump, you realize how groovy and bluesy the Wizard is. Witchcult Today might be an easier approach, the self-titled is also less heavy. Or you can go to ...Come my fanatics if you want to abandon all hope. 😂
@@alessandrogouveia2268 Some of the best music is a little lazy. BB King's style came from him not being able to play fast, so he played slow and pumped some soul into it
Windhand.....Female fronted doom band. She actually sings. One of the best in the genre! Doom can be a hard listen for some...others it's very meditative due to the slow repetitiveness. Song Windhand - Winter Sun
@@fieserfactsack9635 Nonagon was my intro to the band and I agree with you. But LIV probably won't do a full album, so I'd agree Crumbling Castle is the best starter song imo. That or Rattlesnake. The only thing I could see them doing off of Nonagon would be the Gamma Knife/People Vultures video
Come my fanatics and Dopethrone were intended to fill the room, a big swarming, pulsating dose of heavy. Really think they are geared towards live performance and they are outstanding live. There is a lot of groove in amongst those albums but a lot of their other releases are easier on the ears, more classic style doom.
One thing that I would like to say here about doom metal and stuff: some people, me included, like to divide doom metal into smaller subgenres. So, except of course Black Sabbath, who gave a doom blueprint, "traditional" doom metal was born in the 80s with bands like Pentagram, Candlemass and Saint Vitus. Bands like Electric Wizard or Sleep are very often called "stoner doom": they're much heavier than those traditional bands, louder and have much more distorted sound.
Funeralopolis (and "Dopethrone" in general) is definitely at the deep end of the doom/sludge/stoner corner (maybe not the deepest of the deep) and I would not be surprised if if turns people off from Electric Wizard all together. It really is one of the heaviest, most distorted and noisiest music of the apocalypse in the darkest sense (especially since it was made over 20 years ago). But that is also the beauty of it: if you are the kind of person who is looking for the extremes, looking for that fix in heaviness, distortion and repetitiveness then "Dopethrone" is, to my mind at least, of the milestones along with "...Come My Fanatics". It basically is "heavy" for the people who are into heavy music. If you are interested in more accessible Electric Wizard, "Witchcult Today" or "Black Masses" are probably better bets. They are still very heavy but the production is way less noisier and more in the "retro" type (I think at least "Witchcult Today" was recorded with authentic 70's equipment). The vocals are also a bit more approachable although they are still buried in the mix and I think they are meant to be taken more as an instrument than just singing. I would recommend the following songs: "Witchcult Today", "Dunwich" or "Satanic Rites of Drugula". They are all from "Witchcult Today" and that is actually my favourite album from the band.
This was the first wizard song I’ve ever heard, and the first song I ever learned to play on bass. The groove is just amazing and is so fucking fun to jam along to for hours on end . Would love to see your reaction to YOB - Adrift In the Ocean. It’s quite a bit different as far as doom goes and is genuinely beautiful imo, compared to the wizard which os just BRUTAL
Lots of respect for giving this a shot! The older I get, the more I am drawn to music that is totally uncompromising. I’m a big fan of electric wizard. I get what Ryan is saying about creativity just for the sake of it, but I don’t think that applies here. This is expressing very distilled misanthropy and nihilism. Obviously that’s not a very good way of living your life on a daily basis but those feelings exist, and for me there’s something very satisfying hearing music express those emotions in a very pure way. Also they are amazing live.
PLEASE.. don't let people trick you into trying to react to "Dopesmoker" by sleep lmfaoo it's SOOOO LONG, it's "challenging" to listen to. if ur gonna take a first dive into Sleep, go with Dragonaut.. it's wayyy your groove i promise
I'm not mad at this reaction, Electric Wizard are nihilistic doom at its finest. Pretty hard to buy into on the first listen. I'd advise going to the country, hammering a blunt & staring at the stars for a few hours on the next listen, it'll start to make sense 😆. Would love to see a review of King Witch - Of Rock & Stone, modern Stoner at its best.
Understand the reaction. These guys are classic to me. The vocals are just another instrument. Listening in a small bar with the volume to 11, drunk on a few beer... sometimes you just want to feel that feeling.
That tone is the the scuzziest, greasiest, most rage inducing cacophony of over-distorted fuzz ever recorded, and makes most doom sound more like a bad day than the end of the world lol. The guitars fuzz and the bass's fuzz are so grimey and don't match, and that's unsettling enough, but absolutely sick!! But when the vocals come in just as distorted, but also not matching up really with the rest, the 3 different distorted tones slightly off of each other plays with your head, and makes it ache if you're not used to it.. it's an acquired taste, I don't think anyone would go from radio rock to electric wizard and be able to stand it, but it makes you feel something, and crap rock is devoid of that fire and emotion.. that said, if the vocals had been cleaner, more melodic, and coherent, I think this song would've been huge, because musically it's undeniable, but the added distortion of the vocals on top is like an FU to the mainstream, and just a manifesto of their whole "legalize drugs and murder" ethos. If you want cleaner vocals, check out dunwich, or any of the stuff when Liz joined the band.. chosen few, Torquemada 71, satanic rites of drugula.. much more melody, but still doomy AF. But funeralopolis is THE pinnacle of crushing tones, they don't need to go fast to compete with Slayer and other bands known to bring out the aggression in the listener.. when that riff kicks the fuzz on, or turns up the guitars volume knob, whatever, it absolutely hypes me up to the point I could smash someone's nose into powder, much like payback by Slayer, only MORE crushing because it's almost in slow motion adding to the tension and angst.. I listen to the song at least 1-3 times a week, and force coworkers to hear it at earsplitting dbs along with me! They'll learn to love it, it's the perfect soundtrack to the hellscape I work at.. lol 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Haha I love that reaction. I love Electric Wizard, and kinda get a kick of seeing other people being shocked and disgusted by them. The whole Dopethrone album (along with Come My Fanatics) is truly some of the rawest, heaviest stuff out there. Nihilistic, bleak, drug-fueled, wild, heavy. I don't agree with Ryan about it not being musical, though. From my experience, musicality can take many shapes and forms, and can get very extreme at times (hell, there's some weird, WEIRD stuff when you dig in to modern classical music!). You should try some Sunn O))), Earth or Boris to find bands that are really pushing the boundries of what heavy music is with their Drone stuff. Oh, and if you thought this was unsettling, musically and lyrically, you should try out their song ''We Hate You'' from the same album. Pretty dark and fucked up!
Well it's quite normal, the reaction they have. When I first heard some Black Metal music, I was like "wtf, where is the melody ?" Now I'm very into it and I hear the melody. But it took me years of listening harsher and harsher stuff for my ears to understand and appreciate. It's a process.
I knew Funeralopolis was gonna be a tough one for you guys, it was for me too on the first listen. 5 or 10 years and multiple listens turned this into one of my favorite doom songs.
Like all Doom or stoner metal, its like eating spicy food... at first feels really agresive, but every time you listen to it again, it just tastes better and compliment the other flavors

Anything off of their first album is far more accessible than this, although barbarian would have been a better song off this album then diving head first.
Your recommendation is heartily seconded! Another fine choice would be companion piece “Master of Alchemy”. Love the fan-generated video for the tune which utilizes footage from the silent film “Haxan”.

Ryan's struggle is prelude to him becoming an all out psychotic Electric Wizard fanatic! :P
For real, I haven't listened to this song in a minute but there are definitely more Electric Wizard songs that are really heavy and groovy and don't seem to fall apart the way "Funeralopolis" does. This song is extreme anger and disgust being expressed and I think its for a valid reason.
I'm sure there are some Electric Wizard songs you could groove too and enjoy at least a little bit.
Dopethrone
Ryan needs to hear the different vocal approach used on Witchcult Today
@@saltysamurai or even the tracks on their debut,

For me the whole point of this album is to lose yourself in the wall of distorted clipping noise. I don't really care about weed culture wouldn't say I'm a stoner, but listening to this stoned is an experience
The clipping is from crappy sources like the version they listened to here. Get the CD or the vinyl.
@@vincenzonapoles4371 I have it on vinyl, it is done on purpose to give the feeling of the music being pushed to the limit
@@PK_Mega_Awesome there is no clipping on the vinyl. You may be referring to a different sound of you hear it on the vinyl.

I know these dudes would absolutely dig Fu Manchu.

I make music and I never thought of using the breath to enhance the feeling of the song. Bro you just planted new ideas in my head. Thank you.
This is easily my favorite review they’ve done. Their reaction is so real, visceral, and you can see this took an actual mental and physical toll on both of them.

I don’t think they are trying to be different. They are trying to keep it simple. This album is a classic.
Doom is a feeling, a vibe. U can’t be wrong. If it feels doom, then it is
Come my fanatics and Dopethrone were intended to fill the room, a big swarming, pulsating dose of heavy.
So. Electric Wizard is a classic, but it's more of a stoner doom classic, not just doom classic.
Easily my favorite video from y'all. Even as someone who absolutely loves this song/group. Thank y'all so much. Much love.
