"try practiicing with sparring partners that will not punish you with brain damage" really valuable advice 😂😂
😂😂
top priority advise, finding soft sparring partners 😅
@@MMAShredded now go to a boxing gym and see if it works against actual punchers.

@@eddyray-yb6igdo you watch all his videos just to leave comments? He never said that or anything close to it. All of your recent comments are on his videos, find something else to do.
Bro even Spider-Man can’t touch this guy.
Jeff you couldn't have uploaded this at a better time. I was here thinking of what I need to focus on when it comes to head movement and distance management.
:) awesome!
bro thank you so much because I've always been staring at the chest but never properly understood how to read what I should be doing, that explanation of "see their chest move out you move back" explained it perfectly for me and im pissed no one ever broke it down that simple for me before lol.
thanks for watching!
I used some of these tips instinctively. But coudnt figure out why certain times i couldn't react in time or made a very wrong move.
Now seeing all of this, it makes so much more sense.
cheers!!
Jeff Chan's head movement has made the difference in me getting hit and not getting hit in my sparring! I've even been told my head movement saved me while I was sparring against other fighters! I owe Jeff a lot of gratitude for all his advice and knowledge! 🙂
As a 32 year old male, I still think, “when I grow up I want to be like Jeff.”
haha ;)
Me too
Jeff, i know what you went through was rough, but you Truly have an amazing gift and it feels you were meant to teach the masses! Thank you for your great work!
thanks so much for your support
I've already been using head movement extensively in the last few years and this video gives me a better idea of how to improve on it. Thanks!
awesome!!
I love this!! Sometimes I’ll watch a video of yours over and over and just zero in on that skill for weeks! You are such a humble and gracious wealth of knowledge! Thanks for sharing it for all of us to benefit from! Can’t wait to put this into practice!
:) thanks for watching!!
Yea!! Absolutely!
Yeah man! Your head movement is also about your core strength and flexibility! Great stuff!
thanks for watching!
My head movements has begun to improve in sparring but this will hopefully elevate it even more. Thank you Jeff!
no prob :)
You’re still the best at explaining and teaching! Thanks for all you do
thank you!!!
Love it, as always 👍🏻
thank you!!
Fantastic explanations and footage to match, Jeff!
thank you man!
Also, as a beginner, aside from sparring with partner who's not trying to give you brain damage, I have found that wearing head protection gear with solid face shield, like what they used in Kudo for example, helps you learn faster. When you wear a head gear you're more confident in advancing and making mistakes, mistakes that you can learn from without giving yourself early injury
cheers!
I needed this, im just about to start boxing so I need all the tips I can get. Thank you so much for your vids, great channel
Brilliant! Great tips and video post
thx!!
I do mt and I love being evasive but it comes with the costs that I’m consistently being told by people to not be. I love it so I’m gonna keep going till it works
definitely use head movement less in pure Muay Thai! it depends on your opponent!
@@MMAShredded got it! Okay! 👌
Amazing tips. Protect your brains!
One thing that helps me personally is to worry less about "perfectly" slipping or avoiding punches, and not getting discouraged when I get partly touched - turning a straight hit into a glance or skim still reduces damage, and it's part of the progression (like that weightlifting analogy). Just keep that good defensive shell in your pocket and know when to fall back on it, like Jeff did with that one guy in the street challenge.
cheers!
You are so incredibly good at this!
thanks!!!!

Yo my man! excellent footwoork, excellent headmovement🎉
thank you!!
@@MMAShredded No man thank you! keep it going
if the guy is doing preemptive head movement, a way to beat it is to aim at their shoulders, (when they slip to a side) or at chest (if they decide to duck)
Rando on the street => TMA gym => Saenchai => SPIDERMAN
That escalated quickly
haha

Always trying to get ahead!:)lol great video. Ali would be proud of you.:) I have come to conclusion for every martial artist they should learn distance, footwork, and head movement before striking anything.
:) yes!!!
thank you!
keep making great videos.:)
Ok but like if you go into their armpit, what’s stopping them from either choking you or picking you up?
Jeffs style is one of my favorites. If i could move like him i would fight like him.
Thanks man!!
Jeff, if someone has that great head movement and footwork like you, do you recommend focusing more on leg and body shots?
yes definitely, and pressuring forward!!
for tip number 4 you can also hide your head behind deltoid (so ear to deltoid) and better get an angle off, glue your head there + holding on to their elbow to your chest from the side you are on to easily push off or get an angle or clinch.
cheers!
Can you do a video (maybe you have one already) on what type of defense you want to use in mma specifically because I’ve gotten headkicked in sparring due to too much body hinging and stuff
You can get head kicked with a tight high guard, you can get head kicked throwing a jab, you can get head kicked from doing anything. Sometimes you just get caught. I wouldn't blame the type of defence you are using, but just your skill. Of course, using a high guard definitely decreases that chance of being kicked in the head.
thanks!@@MMAShredded
Jeff, can you make a video on the exercises you do to keep yourself this agile? Focusing on the hips and shoulder movement for quick in/out of pocket evasion…what are you doing yoga/core exercises?
I believe a lot of your quick defensive movements relies on your hip and its flexibility. I assume this helps your torso and your head evade faster from the bladed stance.
I would say the stance itself and being on the balls of your feet is what helps the mobility and movement!
My man sparred Spider-Man 😂👍🏼

thanks :)
@Jeff Chan MMAShredded, what are your thoughts in head movement in Muay Thai? I am starting it soon. Thanks!
love it! watch lerdsilla and saenchai!
Jeff, when I slip, should I move my head just enough to evade the punch, exaggerate the slip as you mentioned, or do both? And when is it suitable to use either? Great video, by the way! Thanks!
its best to slip as little as possible and let it graze your hair!
Jeff, you have balls of steel doing that with your hands down in some of those clips. That said, it’s obvious these are just drills.
they are not drills, but sparring yes
Hey Jeff! Will light sparring as showcased in this video give me CTE in the long run?
I would not say so!
It could but many other factors affect your chances of having debilitating brain damage like genetics, diet, body composition and other general health markers. Also your defense and time between sparring plays into it as well. Eat brain healthy food and having a trusting social community as well as doing other things that keep your brain active and learning are good ways to insulate yourself against the chances of CTE.
Alternative title: 8 Tips that LEVELED up my Head Game
A lot of the time here punches are being avoided NOT through head movement but by moving out of range, which I suppose is fine if you have the space to do that AND ARE NOT INTERESTED IN HITTING BACK! But as any pro wil tell you, one very basic reason we move the head (weave, lean, duck, level change, weight change, etc) is SO THAT WE CAN HOLD OUR POSITION. There is little advantage to be gained if we work to get a hitting position - which is a basic goal, right? - but then we abandon it as soon as the other guy starts swinging back...as we see being demonstrated here.
I'm not even listening after the 3rd tip, it's mesmerising seeings you weave and block
haha listen!! they are important tips!
Im a "tall" kickboxer (about 1.90cm or 6,3ft i think) I often use a highguard and shell up, but I really like this evasive style and want a better footwork would you think it would work for me or should I focus on something else?
it works the best when you are tall and long!!!
If elbows are allowed, I strongly advise against slipping into the pocket and simply tying up. In Muay Thai, if you get elbowed on the shoulder blade or the back of the neck (which is perfectly legal), it can seriously injure you and hinder your performance for the rest of the fight. However, its a brilliant technique in boxing and even in Kickboxing Superlek often backs up and as his opponent comes forward to chase him, he goes forward and ties up to get out of tricky positions
In my humble opinion, you can't generate enough power to cut or do damage when your opponent is that tight into your armpit. By the time you try to create space to elbow, your opponent will be gone.
I will definitely try it out more then, thank you very much
how do u stay in a bladed stance in a muay thai setting?
Hey Jeff, how are you so durable? What are some things I can do to stop getting hurt as much when I get hit?
I am not sure how to teach toughness. You just get used to getting hit I guess haha. What is better is to practice not get hit in general!
@@MMAShredded ok, thank you. You’re always a great help and attentive to all the comments 🙏
How to have best head movement : have that mentality and see red
:)
Do some of your clips have Fred Stonehouse? I love that dude!
love Fred!! yeah I have tons of clips with Fred!
@MMAShredded that's awesome I had a grappling match against him and he as well as his team were so classy.
Some of these are less tactics and more preferences that suit you. My head movement is good, but I prefer being more squared and never using the philly shell.
cheers!
Hey Jeff, I have a question. I watchers a video from James Vick in which he said that if you wanna get good as fast as possible in MMA, focus on boxing (the first 2 years). I am from the Netherlands so I wondered why that for example wouldn’t be better because I also learn to deal with low kicks for example. I did Taekwondo for 15 years and was quote competitive and I did some kickboxing while I was abroad for a month and low kicks killed my legs. To the point where I had issues walking for 3 days after training. I quit Taekwondo now because I want a new challange so started training MMA last week. I am curious what a pro like you who did Muay Thai thinks is a good idea.
I think it is really all preference. I think Muay Thai is better to start than Boxing though because you quickly realize and get used to defending punches kicks elbows and knees, whereas boxers take awhile to adapt to all the other strikes.
@@MMAShredded makes sense yes. Unfortunately I can't really do Muay Thai in my gym but I'll just do the Dutch Kickboxing classes. Thanks for your advice! (Also what about BJJ and wrestling, is that also just a preference or do you think wrestling is better?)
I love your head movement, Jeff. Why don't your sparring partners go to the body more often? Feint their way in, wait for you to move, plant, go for a hook to the body, a shovel punch, or lead uppercut. Either counter punch or wait for the distance and land a solid leg kick. Can't check kicks and move your head simultaneously the way you do.
I know it's easier said than done, but I feel like they aren't really looking or exploiting your vulnerabilities when using head movement. Only one or two people went after your legs or body.
I'm not saying I can do it, but there are top teir fighters who could.
reguarding tip 8
when i spar the less experienced in my gym they tend to get frustrated and start throwing hard, even though i tell them to keep it light, this led to 2 injuries of mine after that now i only spar with experienced adults (i'm 16 yrs Girl) which ofcourse this is frustrating because they're all bigger and mostly men leaving me less confident to practice head movement and any techniques i want to try. theres only 3 partners i trust to try new techniques on , so was wondering if you have any more tips for me ? even just for building confidence
thanks Cailin
sorry this is like an email but just thought i'd ask ;)
I would say be selective with your partners!!
@@MMAShredded Thanks 😸
nice video jacky chan
but most important is number 1 & 8
yes!
What about a check knee to the face?
5:25 You did move your head but what evaded the punch was more so the elbow you brought up into the line of the cross to parry.
same thing haha
Jeff, ответьте, пожалуйста🙏
С какой силой пробиваете лоу-кик в спарринге?? ( от 1-10).
I cant read that language haha but thanks for watching!
@@MMAShredded Jeff, please answer🙏 How hard do you throw a low kick in sparring? (from 1-10).
I agree especially the part about practicing with a sparring partner who won't turn you into a vegetable if you get clipped
Cheers!
What about if they throw elbows and knees?
elbows and knees are short range attacks, so focus on the footwork and distance management and staying on the outside
Great now i can have my ultra instinct going when i spar😎
haha!
Aren't you putting your head at major risk for a knee or kick when you dip it down like that - a la EdwardsxUsman head shot? Or is it not a big risk because its on the side and off a punch?
There are always risks in anything you do, including having your hands up. Justin Poitier vs Dustin Poitier, had their hand up when they got caught. The key thing is distance control. Im not saying you cant or won't get caught but I use it as a last resort and also against guys who primarily like to box
🙏
cheers!
Bro puts Dragon Ball in the thumbnail. This is masterclass.👏
Jokes aside, can you do more on Thai sweeps and how to counter them? Thank you!
haha definitely can!
@@MMAShredded thanks man. Ur the best
Question, doesn't using big slips like this leave you open for knees/kicks to the head? Of course against a non skilled fighter you'd likely fight in a street situation theres less risk of that, but agaisnt someone who knows what they're doing, couldn't they potentially see those head movements, and feint a punch and instead throw a knee or kick?
All he had to do was add dragon ball and I clicked so fast
LOL yes!
Why do you keep your hands down? Is it ok to keep my hands up or it works better with the hands down?
Can anyone tell me if judo and freestyle wrestling have a big difference when it comes to defending against muay thai clinch? And even if the difference is big, to what extent would a freestyle wrestler be able to at least not get knocked out if caught in a well-placed muay thai clinch? And the judoka, what is the chance of him being knocked out in this type of clinch?
wrestling will definitely help you against clinching
What’s a bladed stance?
standing like you are skate boarding
@@MMAShredded Thank you so much

Hey Jeff, Have you ever caught a knee to the face when ducking like that?
fortunately never a knee, so far (knock on wood) lol
카메하메 하-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Against top fighters, are you not scared they'll kick you in the dome when you lean over so hard?
depends on the situation. If I can manage to stay on the outside. If they close the distance, I will bring my hands up and be safer. In reality, going against better guys, you're gonna lose regardless. But just remember, this is a video on head movement, not how to win a fight. I use a lot of head movement also because it's extremely fun. With that said, we see several UFC champs like Dominick Cruz, Tj Dillashaw, ISrael Adesanya, Anderson Silva and more, pull off head movement against the highest level of strikers.
😩
KIBE
Ryan Garcia should watch this video lol. He needs better footwork (angles) and better head movement.
I'm a bit confused about the first tip. Keep a "glove to glove" distance when both fighters arms are extended.
Isn't this way too far away? And you also don't seem to keep this distance, it looks more like glove to opponents chin.
glove to chin after he has thrown the punch, but before he threw that punch, I was much further away
@@MMAShredded Hmm I see 🤔
And by much further away you mean literally 2 entire arm lengths? When both fighters are touching their gloves with their extended jabs?
Jeff, I'm not getting notifications... FYI ..
I think you have to click the notification button yourself!!
I'll give it a shoot. Thx@@MMAShredded
