I think people underestimate kicking with the foot, it doesn't hurt as much as kicking with the lower part of the shin, but it still hurts
but more safe
Definitely if you have good genetics and dense bones like pereira u can get away with kicking with the foot and it’ll feel like a shin kick lol 😂
Mostly older generation of Muay Thai fighters and key board warriors who don't know any better
It still hurts A LOt lmao
In French Boxe we only kick with foot it's really efficient and we wear shoes like a weapon.
This is totally a low kick master class! Great stuff as usual!
Thank you!’n
Foot for long distance, and shin for close quarter. In Kyokushin, we point toes down for both, putting our weight.
Your foot sweep timing is so perfect! I like to do similar thing but to the rear leg while faking leg kick.
thanks!!
This is 1 of your best ever videos, esp among shorter 1s. Excellent examples and analysis.
thank you!!!
AMAZING breakdown. Cutting edge stuff, thanks so much for this free analysis and info Jeff 🙏🙏
thanks Peter!!!
Always a fanatic of your low kicks my brotha!!! Love it!!!
thanks man!!
Wow , for years you continously drop gems malking it so hard to select a favorite, then this masterpiece is released. Nothing but love, respect, and gratitude brother.
thanks for the feedback Derek!!!
High Quality Content - Thanks!
Thank you!!
Super impressive! Admirable consistency, too. Your head position and line of sight, etc. when you throw the kick, solid every single time. I think we are all born with an MA superpower, and clearly, this is yours 😂.
haha thank you, I appreciate it! always trying to be as far as I can while hitting, I dont like getting hit :P
I forgot to mention how much I appreciate the level of detail that went into this video🙏 oss
thank you!!
Fantastic stuff. Thank you for sharing, Jeff
thanks for watching!!
great tutorial/concept analysis needed this
Really interesting , as usual thanks love ur vids 🙏
Thanks for watching !
Great video! When I was first training with Coach Lee, former national coach of the US Wushu Sanda Team, at his gym United Martial Arts Training Center based in Lubbock, Texas, for a week in 2019, I basically relearned how to kick with the toes pointing up my last day training there; it felt so alien, like a soccer kick or Taekwondo cut kick, but it eventually helped me get the angle of kicking with the shin and properly pivot on my base/standing/supporting leg. I later found out Coach Lee has learned from many coaches of various fighting styles, including Muay Thai, having gone to Thailand four times, twice before opening his own gym, and twice again after. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
osss!
I really enjoy watching your sparring videos …amazing fighter
thank you!!
Very informative Video! I love watching your techniques!
thanks man!
This was a great video Jeff.
thanks for watching!!
Awesome tips. Thank you!
Thanks for watching !
Man I wish you would fight again. The one fight I saw of you in ONE was exhausting to watch. I get the money and stuff. Hopefully able to see you in some sort of competitive setting at some point. Too good of a talent.
You have Dominic Cruz style it’s awesome! Especially that part when you do toes down for the escape part.
like you said, for me as well, distance is the crucial determining factor.
relaxed ankle / whip style kicks in my experience also cost less energy to perform and make it easy to throw out frontal/diagonal variations of roundhouse type kicks when on the inside.
the extension / stiffening of the ankle on the other hand, IME, tends to hurt the loose whip style strike acceleration and offers itself more for knee/calf extension type acceleration and precision strikes on the outside.
with both styles, power investment and result of course largely depend on the choice of hip angle / support heel direction, for long range strikes possibly more so.
cheers!!
Great video as Always, great Warrior 👏🏼👏🏼 this is what we call kiage (the foot slap) and kekomi (deep impact) kicks! Wonderful also the swip hook, Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼💪💪
oss!
Very nice video as always😊😊
Thank you!!!
great video, thanks !!!
thanks for watching!
Great topic Jeff!! You made me think of a couple of important historical facts:
1) Mirko was knocking out dudes with his foot to the dome consistently; and
2) kicking with the shin, going for that "thud" baseball style can break your fucking leg! (e.g., Weidman, Silva, McGregor, et al)
haha yeah! there are pros and cons to everything!
Great info!
Glad you found it helpful ;) thanks for the support as usual!
Foot sweeps on my to learn list✌️
Happy new year champ 🙂🙌
happy new year bro!
Thanks bro
np!
Hi Jeff, love the videos, I was wondering if you could make a video about crossing the void to get into your striking range against someone with a long reach and a stiff jab
Hours and hours of footage. Must have taken a while just to put this together. Good stuff 🤙
🙏🙏🙏
That crazy bro, I was just thinking of this a couple of days ago lol. Gotta get more serious about training and join your program
:) Loving those instructionnal videos
thanks :))
I love the low sweep. I have to try this in training
cheers!
Those footsweeps are a thing of beauty.
:)
Great video. Have you ever been check in an MMA fight when you were kicking with your toes down?
5:15
I see that you often use forward steps and attacks. It's nice and practical !
Can you make a video of this type of teaching?
definitely can!
Jeff can write a 100000000000000000000-page book about MMA. 😤👍 Thanks for this video!!
thanks for watching!!
jeff idk if anyone had told you but you have beautiful kicks😂
haha thanks!
It’s the sound for me 😌
haha
Whipping style kick seems like a smart option. I cant imagine how painful and how much recovery is needed from a failed leg kick.
You are probably my favorite YT channel that has to do with fighting. Besides possibly Wonder boy's channel lol. You have a style that makes me feel better about how i fight, as i try to do similar things. You have shown me many different ways to use the techniques i already loved. So thank you!!
thanks man!!!! keep it up!
Fantastic video! Thank you! Do you have video about standing leg when kicking?
Thanks! And what about the standing leg?
@@MMAShredded thank you for replying to my question this quickly. Well, what's your take about whole debate of foot on the ground while kicking vs rising on the ball of your feet (this would be more MT style) when kicking?
Bro it seems like everyone needs some low kick check training. Im in awe that it seems no one training or in the cage fights you show ever realize or impliment checking, or rolling the knee out for outside low kicks.
Lerdsila had a seminar where he also taught how and when to kick with the instep/foot. People are so quick to write off kicking with the instep when it can actually be really effective
sweet! saenchai as well!!
A direct outside knee kick is kind if dangerous in sparing IMO. MCL injuries are common enough in training already. I think mid thigh or low calf kicks are better etiquette.
Another nice thing about the shin is that it gives them less of a chance of evading, plus it deals more damage, and depending where you strike you’re less likely to receive an injury. The foot gives more range and is more versatile.
cheers!
My biggest gripe with toes down is you’re more likely to injure yourself if you they block well/you hit something sharp
tbh i'm more worried about breaking my shin
It will hurt either way haha
excelent
Thx!
Can you do a an updated video like this but for body kicks ? How to set them up . Different varieties of body kicks etc ? ..
try this video: ua-cam.com/video/nAdgqrAzrfs/v-deo.html
Nice 💪👍😁
Thx!
Thx, thx so much Jeff, I'm focusing on improving my technique currently, and I was wondering "How SHOULD I hit the low kick"?, now I know the differences and the way of use both, I'll add them haha, oss
Osssss!
i just use foot it comes from my first style that was karate...but i use more oblique kicks that i have learned with savate and wing chun knowledge. But i must clarify that my style is build more for self defense...since this "stomb" kick in mma sport are not well so looked.
0:53 that low kick nearly destroyed that knee!
Watch Jan blachowich against ankalaev he kicked with the bottom/side arch of his foot and it was working really well
Cheers!
Saenchai is a master of this. He kicks with the bridge and its so freaking fast
Oss
Jeff when fighting a taller/heavier guy..do you think that generally its better to kick them with foot or shins?
💯
Oss
this video makes my knee hurt HAHAHA
W
oss
I hate to kick with me toes because it hurts so much when partners check it... When my toes goes on elbow or knee....
Really love your Videos !! So Happy that I am subscribed ! Can learn a lot of stuff on this channel !! Merry Christmas and Happy new Year to you Jeff!!!😇😇😇😇
Merry Christmas and happy new year :)
👏👏👏
cheers!
👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Jeff Chan is the Best Martial Arts UA-camr ever!!! Sorry Shane 🫡
Thank you!!
Jeff any news when you’ll be fighting again?
Hey Jeff! I'm always wondering how does Tawanchai for example to kick so hard with no shinpads and with his toes pointing down and not get injured with his opponents elbow. Thank you for ur great content!
he is still hitting with the shin, just the lower shin. You can also condition your foot/lower shin. There is more whip behind the kick that way too!
Didn’t even know about this toes pointing up shit 😛
haha
Toes pointing down makes me feel distance and I can’t feel when the opponent is pushing or not
Soy español no hablo inglés veo tus vídeos me gustaría ver vídeos de sparring con zurdos te sigo hace tiempo un saludo de españa
Ernesto Hoost combo, right?
what shorts have you got at 1:50?
Great video
thx!
Whats ur opinion of the long guard variation where u extend ur lead arm but have ur back arm horizontal across ur face sort of like and elbow block. Ive seen Tawanchai do this and it looks quite effective
+1
Not a fan personally Becuase I like to counter with my right hand a lot but definitely effective !
@@MMAShredded yeah i get u, although if u use the regular helmet guard u cant exactly counter with ur right hand either. Id say the horizontal guard could injure the opponents hands and open up elbow counters or frames
Hi bro
How can one avoid breaking their leg or foot doing this
My Sanda class we were taught to all kick with insteps, but block with shin, and if im correct some muay thai fighters kick with instep too? Do you think it is really up to the fighter?
definitely up to the fighter. Superbon, Taiwanchai, Saenchai all kick with the foot
@@MMAShredded Thank you!
I always seem to have pain and swelling immediately after kicking 2-3 times with my feet pointed downwards.
maybe a bit of conditioning. Simply hitting pads should do the trick though
What gym does Jeff train at?
what if I am at a huge range disadvantage. Would it make more sense to just always focus on power, since even with toes pointing downward I may still get countered with a long punch?
if you plan on trying to fight in the pocket, then yes!
How do you impact for a kick if your to late to catch or check a kick?
plant your leg and flex your thigh as it hits
I imagine there are many views on this topic. Some schools would actually say the opposite, that pointing toe out would only be acceptable for those martial arts where you just score points per each strike. But if the sport is about doing as much damage as possible to the opponent, pointing toe out would be a no-no for a really powerful low kick, as the risk to damage your feet is too high if you land on opponents knee by mistake or the opponent blocks your kick with their shin (Ernesto Hoost block style). I think it's a discussion similar to "Align knuckles with forearm VS Keep knuckles slighly lower than forearm to reduce risk of injury" topic.
I definitely expect a lot of people who disagree, but that’s the old school guys haha. The new era of fighters all kick this way though
Will you come in France ?
one day!
so you are saying to always kick with steel toed shoes
Is there any reason not to keep your foot pointed down when kicking with the shin?
if you flex toes up, and hit with the shin, its more damage
Gotcha tnx
Did you blew that dude's knee on 00:54 ? Looked brutal
🔥🔥🔥🤙🤙🤙💪💪💪
oss
Without shin guards how do you locate a low leg kick without hurting your shins ?
setup your kicks haha. I mean, every fight you get bruised, thats just how it is
some people say kicking with the foot can break your foot, but thats just because of not having the right mentality, if you go to a mindset coach then you can kick with your foot , IF you got that mindset of seeing red
cheers!
@@MMAShredded Jeff you just dont know about my mentality bro
Can you make virtual kickboxing sparring?
I’ll see what I can do
Hey so am I the only one who’s ankles hurt and make it a bit hard to walk for a few days after sparring when I land with my ankle/foot to often I am Fairly new to training so maybe it’s a conditioning thing but yea?
can be conditioning!
5:25 6:38
Anyone know when Jeff’s next training retreat is?
Nothing confirmed yet but looking at august! Sign up for my mailing list so you get notified !! www.mmashredded.com/traintravelcamp
If you have shoes, kick with the ball of the foot
Jeff must be a frustrating guy to spar with lol
i dont really like kicking low kicks with my toes pointing up as it tightenes the muscles on your shin causing you to be slower, also hitting with pure shin is better ig? you dont clench fists while throwing elbows do you? or am i missing the point?
I totally agree , we clench at the last second!
@@MMAShredded i meant that, letting bone alone hit should be "stronger" than a bone covered in muscle, no? i feel like not clenching fist while throwing elbows gives you better range of motion + the impact is harder, and i think that the same goes for shins
fucking thank you so much, I very much have a style of kick and keep away. mfs online always saying its bad to kick with your foot/lower ankle but im yet to have an injury and it works fucking great for me. Sparring people no one wants to rush the guy that is faster with their legs over their hands.
The best fighters kick this way!
@@MMAShredded is there anything you can see in this short that I should be working on specifically for that type of kick? ua-cam.com/users/shortsZwYTlRlS24I?si=76DY-UP0RyrQVoL8
Yea I like the foot more ,I don’t like they teach you to hit with shin instead
Feels more natural to just hit with foot
oss
Jean Charles Skarbowsky (Muay thai legend) says you should always kick with the foot, not the shin.
Bam!
I prefer the foot but don’t do that in fights when you go for head kicks….. it doesn’t feel good the day after
but think about how their head felt the day after hahaha
@@MMAShredded hahaha true
Man i fractured my foot cuz of a foot down kick💀
