the 90s were actually a pretty eclectic mix and I think Alternative summed it up as an umbrella term for the mix of genres you heard as a lot of it was just different. Pearl Jam and Nirvana were kinda the epitomes of grunge, and Soundgarden in some regards, but Garbage was never a grunge band or sound. I could never really put a label on their genre as they invented their own style and sound. That's what made them so great. Shirley and the band actually consciously chose to distinguish themselves from grunge with their sound. She didn't like grunge. For that matter, I never cared for the grunge bands of that era but by the mid '90s there were a lot of unique styles getting airplay on the Alternative format radio stations at the time. Even though Butch Vig, founding member, drummer and producer of Garbage, produced the definitive sound for some of the biggest grunge acts in the early '90s like Nirvana, he said they (Garbage) all wanted to do something unique and different and their influences came from all over. Grunge bands didn't utilize keyboards, synth, samples, and minimal tech really while Garbage utilized nearly every technology that was available at the time to create their sounds. And you tell a lot on Garbage 2.0. There's no other album that comes close to sounding like it.
Shirley Manson was an epic front woman, and Butch Vig was the architect of 90s sound period. To go from producing and engineering the sound on Nirvanas "Nevermind" to drumming and producing Garbage, that dude is a machine that spits out talent.

I have to come back to this every once in a while for a dose of nostalgia. The 1st time I heard this song, it was played on my favorite radio station WFNX back in 1998. It's one of my favorite albums, I still listen to it on a regular basis. Brings back a lot of good memories from another lifetime that feels like 100 years ago lol.
This album definitively made the identity of the band, adding to a traditional rock band a digital touch, creating an experimental & hybrid style. This video clip represent it all. Pure genius !

this song should always be heard at full volume. This song doesn't hold back; it packs a punch, it embodies chaos, and it just sounds amazing when it rips through your ear drums through headphones. You want to get your day going? Blast this one.
I would always sing when my brother and I played Rockband together years ago. I’ll never forget 7 year old me wailing this song into the microphone. I’ve known all the lyrics my whole life. Love it!
I always wanted this album when it came out in 1998, I was in high school and never had enough money to buy it. I remember going every weekend to the music store just to see it and have it in my hands. I also remember that the CD was more expensive than the average albums at that time :/ so my best friend lent me the cd from time to time specially on weekends and I enjoyed playing it a lot for several months until I eventually stopped listening to it around 2000. My friend and I spent hours talking about their music and videos, Version 2.0 is definitely part of the music of my life. My friend is now far away living in Canada and I stayed in Mexico. I currently have the anniversary edition on CD and on Vinyl :) and I have been able to see them live a couple of times, so now I can die happily.
I love her look, that hair, that dress, those boots, matching undies, the choker, the way she dances, the intense movement editing, action, production value, amazing. Shirley in B&W visually stunning & I love her voice //
I like the song, lyrics and idea of bending and breaking to bring someone pleasure, love, passion, emotions, feelings, engagement, loving and liking someone, teasing someone, that high octane ping of someone you find super attractive, you like their look, their eyes, their voice, their style, their vibe, everything about them, even their imperfections making you giggle on the inside, real deep attraction that perpetuates the human civilization via reproduction //
Played gran turismo 2 when i was like 6.......now I'm 20, stumbled upon this song, and had a ridiculous flashback. But i also want to credit people who didn't just play GT2 and rock to this song. its all memories
This song is awesome !! They nailed it. Garbage is a great band....My younger brother Robert introduced me to this band over 25 years ago. And I can't thank him enough. He knew great music. "Thank you my brother Bobby !!"...I miss you more than you can imagine. Rest in peace my brother. ❤
For sure! Many years ago, for my 40th birthday, my wife asked me what I wanted for my birthday. Showed her this video and said, "I want you to dress up like her...". And... She did!! Not the exact same dress, boots or underwear, but damn close. Did her makeup the same and styled her then similar "bob" to look like this. BEST birthday in a long time!! Relevant info... She has similar red hair and is built more or less the same as Shirley (slightly wider shoulders, but that just enhances her narrow waist). Anyway... Dream come true. Nearly.
@@fatimaramzan4069 I wouldn't say it fits into any genre, it's 90's alternative all over the place amalgamation of punk, grunge, industrial, techno and pop. The drummer/producer is Butch Vig who also produced Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana, pretty much a legend.
I was 7 or 8 and my mum played this album on repeat during the late 1990's in her rundown 1994 Mercedes Benz saloon she got in the divorce settlement. All 5 kids stuffed inside a sweaty car on our way to school in London. It guzzled petrol and spurted water. It broke down multiple times. But this album kept us going.
I was DJ in the 90s, Garbage was one of my favorites groups. 93-99 were great years of for the music. Grunge influenced a lot at the beggining but the sound began to change at the middle of 90s. Garbage, Republic, Elastica, Hooverphonic, Portishead, Massive Attack, Air, Mika, Duft Punk, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Blur, etc...
I remember that too. There was a really great window in the mid '90s that produced a lot of really eclectic sounds that came over the Alternative radio stations of that time. Alternative was really multiple genres then. All the bands you mentioned, and The Cranberries (for such a popular band then, I almost forgot them). Loved Massive Attack. Daft Punk has sure stood the test of time and bobbed to the surface again and again. I was a guy who was a metal head before that era and liked the prog metal that came out in the late '80s. I remembered kinda hating grunge for knocking Queensryche off the radio just when they reached their peak with The Empire album. Back to the mid '90s,..there were a lot of really good woman fronted groups in that timeframe ( i think most came out of the UK). But yeah, mid-late 1993 - 1996 was probably the best window in the '90s and it really kind of drowned out the grunge from the earliest period of the '90s (at least that was my impression and I was glad for it). I don't know when in the late '90s the quality started to decline, but I want to say '98ish or whenever Brittney Spears and the Spice Girls started getting radio airplay. You could tell the mass produced formulas were returning to hook pre-teens on mindless pop. I remember Shirley Manson saying at a concert that she wanted to dropkick Sporty? or Posh Spice. I'm actually surprised we had such a long run of good music and labels that allowed such diverse creative talent to rise to the top. Interesting times. The other thing I recall as I was reading a lot of business magazines at the time was that Clear Channel had bought up the majority of the Alternative radio format stations by sometime in 1996 and that's when I noticed the format of bands and styles getting airplay started to become more limited and one dimensional. By that time, all media outlets were getting snapped up and owned by I believe one of only three media conglomerates.
I remember the very first time I listened to this song and the impact. Loved the raw riffs, so electrifying and Shirley's voice is just... Ah, it all sound so good together even +20 years later.
@@zimriel when you're gay you always resonate with female creativity, I guess due to the the fact that homophobia and misogyny come from the same place.

This song put on the face of everybody why Garbage is One of great examples how a great group could be underestimated. They have one of most impressive discography ever recorded, some of most iconic songs ever played, and some of most original videoclips you will watch in your entire life. Success is not only how many times your songs will be played on radios and music platforms, success could be your songs proving being immune to time, to outdating, and in this way, Garbage is one of most succesful groups of all time!!!.
I love listening to music from my carefree days! Great remembering the easy college life, even if I didn't realize it was easy then. I am very choosy about good music and listened to mostly classic rock but Garbage (STP, Bush, DMB and several others) stood out at the end of the 90s, the last time there was decent, original music in the mainstream.
My comment was normal to me. It's not as if i said : UHHH MUSIC NOWADAYS SUCKCKCKS. I said that they had a unique style. Style that you don't really hear nowadays. Music today is good but mostly not my type. On a more positive note, if you know any band /artist like that feel free to show me.

This album definitively made the identity of the band, adding to a traditional rock band a digital touch, creating an experimental & hybrid style. This video clip represent it all. Pure genius !

The deep bass tones in this song have always haunted me. Love it.
Спасибо, ребята. Вы настоящие люди и музыка у вас гениальная!
Garbage was one of the opening bands for the Alanis Morrisette concert I went to about a month ago. When they played this song I got SO hyped. Sounds just as great live.
Ah, but Garbage shouldn't be opening for anyone! Shirley has it head over heals over Alanis Morissette! She should be opening for Shirley!
@Shannen Redman - Hell yeah! I was at the Bowl too! I rarely go to concerts, but I wouldn’t have missed that for anything! 👍
I saw then open for Smashing Pumpkins ... Awesome
Garbage and Alanis? Goodness, a sounds like a great night
So glad they have a new album out. Long live Garbage and real music.
Oh dear God I didn't know that!!!! Thanks for sharing! Prayers answered :)

"I Think I'm Paranoid"
You can look, but you can't touch
I don't think I like you much
Heaven knows what a girl can do
Heaven knows what you've got to prove
I think I'm paranoid
And complicated
I think I'm paranoid
Manipulate it
[Chorus:]
Bend me, break me
Anyway you need me
All I want is you
Bend me, break me
Breaking down is easy
All I want is you
I fall down just to give you a thrill
Prop me up with another pill
If I should fail, if I should fold
I nailed my faith to the sticking pole
I think I'm paranoid
Manipulate it
I think I'm paranoid
And complicated
[Chorus:]
Paranoid
I think I'm paranoid
[Chorus:]
Steal me, deal me, anyway you heal me
Maim me, tame me, you can never change me
Love me, like me, come ahead and fight me
Please me, tease me, go ahead and leave me
Bend me
Break me
Anyway you need me
As long as I want you baby it's all right
Bend me
Break me
Any way you need me
As long as I want you baby it's all right.
_“Have me, grab me, go ahead and stab me”!_ 🤣
I'll never understand the abuse of a true heart
Only the devil and his followers would take pleasure in Kicking someone when they are down

this song should always be heard at full volume. This song doesn't hold back; it packs a punch, it embodies chaos, and it just sounds amazing when it rips through your ear drums through headphones. You want to get your day going? Blast this one.

Just came across this for the first time in years, I'm 29 was only a kid when it came out. Described it perfectly. What a fucking song.
It is. As all good music: it deserves VOLUME !!!!! :)
its especially good through noise cancellers at full blast

I would always sing when my brother and I played Rockband together years ago. I’ll never forget 7 year old me wailing this song into the microphone. I’ve known all the lyrics my whole life. Love it!
Thanks Gran turismo 2 for sticking me with this song forever. I'd have never thought twice about this song otherwise.
Bruv 4 year old me went mental every time this song came on playing GT2. It just seemed to stand out from the rest of the soundtrack
Souds so great even 18 years later! not aged at all.
NiceCarsLover more than 18 years?! Mother of god it's hard to believe
Thanks, you just made me feel even older than I already felt. lol
well, it sounds great because 90's was a great decade. Oh god 20 years have already passed. I wanna back to 90's!
I liked your experience about this album as I also love those era
Genial historia. Este disco también es parte de mi historia musical
Oh boy, this song keeps getting better and better. Pop music is so dead nowadays.
Played gran turismo 2 when i was like 6.......now I'm 20, stumbled upon this song, and had a ridiculous flashback. But i also want to credit people who didn't just play GT2 and rock to this song. its all memories
i had the same experience just today man, cheers buddy

GT2 was one of my first videogames and gosh I was almost brought to tears when I heard this song after a friend recommended listening to Garbage

This song gives me real life growing up in the 90s nostalgia. Lol
My God, this woman is spectacular, isn't she?
Who else's crush began with this very video?
1st video I saw was the song stupid girl on their 1st album. That's where my attraction started
True. My childhood celebrity crush. Other kids were into Pamela Anderson. I had a different taste, I guess.
Nearly.
my new favorite song, again.
YEP...this song still kicks ass, it is by far their best song
Gwen Stefani and Shirley Manson made polka dresses iconic in the 90s
Yes
what genere of song is that? background?
@@fatimaramzan4069 I wouldn't say it fits into any genre, it's 90's alternative all over the place amalgamation of punk, grunge, industrial, techno and pop. The drummer/producer is Butch Vig who also produced Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana, pretty much a legend.
Would like to see them OUT of the dress
@@wordup897 Yeah, and not just any Nirvana album but friggin Nevermind! :D
I was 8 years old singing this song, playing Rock Band with my 3 brothers. Good times
This story strikes a real mood, y’know?
This is the song of my First love story....i had in Heart for ever
I’m on the same level. You’re not alone.

97-99 spanked ass. No getting away from it
I was DJ in the 90s, Garbage was one of my favorites groups.
Maaan, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy....what u made me remember lol! Fire times back then for sure!

It's a powerful window into the female id. The whole album is.
It's a difficult listen for males, especially for male feminists.
@@zimriel when you're gay you always resonate with female creativity, I guess due to the the fact that homophobia and misogyny come from the same place.
@@AlexOrozco-Social-Pariah It is quite possible for male homosexuals to despise women, to call them "fish" or "bimbos".

This is one of my warmup songs on the drums. It's bloody brilliant and so much fun to play.
