    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Howard (Ryan O'Neal) and Judy (Barbra Streisand) hightail it through the streest of San Francisco with a whole lot of cars in hot pursuit.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
With Howard Hawks's Bringing Up Baby (1938) as his blueprint, Peter Bogdanovich resurrected and payed homage to 1930s screwball comedy in What's Up, Doc? (1972). When wacky co-ed Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand, in the Katharine Hepburn part) spies nebbishy musicologist Howard Bannister (Ryan O'Neal in bespectacled Cary Grant mode) in a San Francisco hotel lobby, she decides that Howard and his precious igneous rocks are right up her alley. Too bad Howard already has a fiance, the propriety-fixated Eunice (Madeline Kahn in her film debut). Using all her arcane knowledge from brief stays at numerous colleges, Judy tries to charm her way to a $20,000 grant for Howard, and Howard himself, at a banquet with grantor Frederick Larrabee (Austin Pendleton). Things get even more complicated the next day when Judy's underwear-filled overnight bag gets mixed up with Howard's rock bag, which gets mixed up with Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag of jewels, which gets mixed up with Mr. Smith's bag of top secret government papers. All sides converge at Larrabee's mod townhouse and the chase begins. Retaining Hawks' machine-gun pace (as well as the sly pop culture referentiality of Billy Wilder), Bogdanovich and writers Buck Henry, David Newman, and Robert Benton updated the opposites-attract screwball convention for contemporary times. O'Neal gently parodied not only Grant but also his own Love Story (1970) preppy, while Kahn represents stiff-wigged 1950s manners as opposed to Streisand's long-haired, pants-wearing free spirit. The happy ending, in which Cole Porter-belting youth wins out over old manners, found favor with audiences, as What's Up, Doc? became one of the most popular films of 1972, and the second hit in a row for Bogdanovich after 1971's The Last Picture Show.

This might just be the best car chase scene in the history of movies. This was back when they did everything for real, no CGI. They didn't have city permission to drive down those steps, and they really damaged them (the scars are still there today).

Oh, Ryan. You, Barbra, and this film have meant so much to me since the first day I saw it. Because of it, you were one of the major figures of my childhood, as I watched this film over and over and over again. You truly captured the essence of a classic Harold Lloyd/Cary Grant type, with flawless line deliveries (“NOW I REALLY CAN’T SEE!”). Every time I watch this, you still make me laugh and laugh. You weren’t a perfect person, but you brought great joy to me through this gem of a film. I can’t believe you’re really gone. RIP.

NO WAY you could make a movie like this now.
It looks hellaciously more dangerous than the stunts were for "Bullitt".

Leaving out the side-bar of who deserves what most, they deserve a place in the rolling (or page-turning in this case) credits as much as any cast or crew member that contributes to what we experience while munching on our popcorn laced with peanut M&Ms. Re: awards. I wonder if it was thought to encourage performing outside the bounds of safety regs or something? And/or if a union thing was stirred into that safety pot? Guess it depends on what the awards recognized. (Longest awning rip by neck? Highest banner swing in a comedy or musical? 😝). Of course that's just questionable speculation from the uninformed. Said stuntman’s name was Loren Janes, co-founder of the Stuntmen’s Association who doubled for many big Hollywood names throughout his career including Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Jack Nicholson, and even Debbie Reynolds. When he performed this stunt, he was actually knocked out cold by the impact and had to be pulled from the water. When he woke up, everyone congratulated him on doing the stunt successfully despite his injury, and he answered “What stunt?” Even after being shown the footage, he never remembered doing it.

If this scene wasn't inspired by *The Love Bug,* I don't know what was.

This feels so much like a Disney Herbie chase scene. I like to pretend that the Beetle is Herbie's brother.

Imagine if the are more madcap comedy films with slapstick car chases like this, that would be more astonishing. All of them will be done for real, without CGI assistance.

This movie is a testimonial to the mechanical engineering superiority of the VW Beetle. I learned to drive on a Beetle. Another testimonial to the mechanical engineering superiority of the VW Beetle.

I’ve been running this through my mind for a long time
Judy Maxwell-Jennifer Lawrence or Kaley Cuoco
      Howard Bannister-Bradley Cooper
      Eunice Burns-Adele
      Mister Larrabee-Jim Parsons
Granted, there’s a LOT of other names that would be great too
