Before Howard (Ryan O'Neal) boards his flight empty-handed, Judy (Barbra Streisand) uses her wits to win back Mr. Larrabee's (Austin Pendleton) grant.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
With Howard Hawks's Bringing Up Baby (1938) as his blueprint, Peter Bogdanovich resurrected and payed homage to 1930s screwball comedy in What's Up, Doc? (1972). When wacky co-ed Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand, in the Katharine Hepburn part) spies nebbishy musicologist Howard Bannister (Ryan O'Neal in bespectacled Cary Grant mode) in a San Francisco hotel lobby, she decides that Howard and his precious igneous rocks are right up her alley. Too bad Howard already has a fiance, the propriety-fixated Eunice (Madeline Kahn in her film debut). Using all her arcane knowledge from brief stays at numerous colleges, Judy tries to charm her way to a $20,000 grant for Howard, and Howard himself, at a banquet with grantor Frederick Larrabee (Austin Pendleton). Things get even more complicated the next day when Judy's underwear-filled overnight bag gets mixed up with Howard's rock bag, which gets mixed up with Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag of jewels, which gets mixed up with Mr. Smith's bag of top secret government papers. All sides converge at Larrabee's mod townhouse and the chase begins. Retaining Hawks' machine-gun pace (as well as the sly pop culture referentiality of Billy Wilder), Bogdanovich and writers Buck Henry, David Newman, and Robert Benton updated the opposites-attract screwball convention for contemporary times. O'Neal gently parodied not only Grant but also his own Love Story (1970) preppy, while Kahn represents stiff-wigged 1950s manners as opposed to Streisand's long-haired, pants-wearing free spirit. The happy ending, in which Cole Porter-belting youth wins out over old manners, found favor with audiences, as What's Up, Doc? became one of the most popular films of 1972, and the second hit in a row for Bogdanovich after 1971's The Last Picture Show.

One of the best comedies ever made.
One of? You mean the best.
My parents took me to see this at Radio City when in opened in New York, and it's STILL one of my favorite movies. And Radio City was packed, hearing about 6,000 people laughing and reacting was an off the charts experience !
Without question. And so wholesome. Giving laughs to humanity for 51 years now. Me and my baby boomer friend were quoting lines to each other after all this time.
So touching when he calls for Judy at the end.
Thank you, wonderful cast and crew, for making such a fun movie. I have loved it all my life -- from the first time I saw it as a kid at the Highland Theater on Central Avenue in Albuquerque, NM in the '70's.
The screenplay of this film is briliant. Not only is it hilarious but it allows for great character development, particularly on Howard’s part. “I know that too” is something he never would’ve said to Judy at the beginning of the film. It’s clear that the story’s events have changed him.
The end of this scene shows how at anytime or any moment, the most wonderful person on your life can just vanish and you feel how it just aches for Howard when he walks alone
Empty airport and Judy was gone, this comedy movie has lots of sad and lost scene. To me this is one of the best movie that I can watch and watch. Barbara Straisand was lovely and interesting, i like her more then in her other movies. I also like the way she sang as time goes by, you're the top,... better then her songs in her LP/CD
Has been one of my favorites from when I first saw it at Radio City with my parents back in 1972.. Very entertaining, funny, and seeing it that giant packed theater with all the laughing made it even better..and yes, Streisand is a lot of fun.
So those two songs are better than the hundreds she has recorded over the years? Hmmmm

@@MVR326 she was at her top in the 70s. When i studied in Montreal, between 1974 to 1981, i cud heard her song over the radio every day. I remember the last hit of her was woman in love.
@@natalievu4399 music and movies of the older time were much better. I just went to watch spiderman with my son family last Saturday, four person and there fall to sleep. So boring and i felt Disney was abusing the customers.
Music and movies then were more arts with feeling, but now only technical and physical.

Wow...this was Madeline Kahn's first flick?! She's fantastic! Soon after must be when she appeared with her fellow actor (the German fraud) in What's Up Doc, in "Young Frankenstein".

How many times I flew in and out of there to/from JFK when I worked for TWA.
Hmmmmmmmmmm, that reminds me of the following: a long time ago (late August 1997) I flew into SFO (San Francisco International Airport) from New York's JFK airport for vacation time. As I was waiting for my luggage in the American Airlines terminal at the baggage claim carousel I instantly heard the voice of "Eunice Burns" (played by the late Madeline Kahn) from this movie go off in my consciousness: "HOWARD!...............HOWARD BANNISTER!"

I worked at the airport then lol.. It was a great time to be alive security was nothing it was cheap to fly and planes had leg room and passed out food and no charge for bags..
And pilots made lots of money.
By the way I thought flying had never been as cheap as today (or at least before the pandemic)

It's reminiscent of the screwball comedies of the '30's.
The plot gets its inspiration from _Bringing Up Baby_ .
Intentionally so, as Peter Bogdanovich was straight up about the greatness of Golden Age directors like Howard Hawks and John Ford. Bogdanovich has died at the age of 82.
@@RaymondHng Yes, that was the genesis of this movie, but I much prefer this movie--maybe because of the happy ending. Bringing Up Baby, in my opinion, has a tragic ending.
