CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Howard (Ryan O'Neal) meets his stalker (Barbra Streisand), she refuses to let him out of her sight.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
With Howard Hawks's Bringing Up Baby (1938) as his blueprint, Peter Bogdanovich resurrected and payed homage to 1930s screwball comedy in What's Up, Doc? (1972). When wacky co-ed Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand, in the Katharine Hepburn part) spies nebbishy musicologist Howard Bannister (Ryan O'Neal in bespectacled Cary Grant mode) in a San Francisco hotel lobby, she decides that Howard and his precious igneous rocks are right up her alley. Too bad Howard already has a fiance, the propriety-fixated Eunice (Madeline Kahn in her film debut). Using all her arcane knowledge from brief stays at numerous colleges, Judy tries to charm her way to a $20,000 grant for Howard, and Howard himself, at a banquet with grantor Frederick Larrabee (Austin Pendleton). Things get even more complicated the next day when Judy's underwear-filled overnight bag gets mixed up with Howard's rock bag, which gets mixed up with Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag of jewels, which gets mixed up with Mr. Smith's bag of top secret government papers. All sides converge at Larrabee's mod townhouse and the chase begins. Retaining Hawks' machine-gun pace (as well as the sly pop culture referentiality of Billy Wilder), Bogdanovich and writers Buck Henry, David Newman, and Robert Benton updated the opposites-attract screwball convention for contemporary times. O'Neal gently parodied not only Grant but also his own Love Story (1970) preppy, while Kahn represents stiff-wigged 1950s manners as opposed to Streisand's long-haired, pants-wearing free spirit. The happy ending, in which Cole Porter-belting youth wins out over old manners, found favor with audiences, as What's Up, Doc? became one of the most popular films of 1972, and the second hit in a row for Bogdanovich after 1971's The Last Picture Show.

Thanks for all the laughs Ryan. This movie is a comedy classic. Everyone in it is so good. RIP Ryan
HIGHLY recommend this movie. Very clever and VERY funny. Both Ryan and Streisand were terrific, and they clearly have a great chemistry. As far as I klnow, this was also the first time I saw Madeline Kahn, and she blew me away she was so hysterically funny! If you're into collecting movies, this is definitely one to add to the mix!
where can I watch it?
Has always been one of my favorites, and it still makes me laugh. We saw this at Radio City .. what an experience ! Hearing thousands of people going nuts with laughter made it even better
This was the first time *anyone* saw Madeline Kahn: it was literally her film debut.
same 🙏❣️🎞️🎞️🎞️🎞️🎞️great film ,i adore 😍🤩it
@@mimii.02it is on tubi for free if that is available to you. Watching today - June 2024
I nearly had this entire dialogue memorized by the mid '80s. RIP, Ryan O'Neal!
This is one of those rare films that only improves with each viewing.
indeed it does!
She is BUGS BUNNY here
My niece asked if I had any sedimentary rocks for school, and while i had several gemstones, I realized none of them were what she needed. When she left my room I quoted, "I relate to Micah's, quartz, feldspar!" and she said, "huh!?" so I had to show her part of this clip. I love this movie. :)
❤️❤️❤️
i think it's " I relate PRIMARILY to.." :)
I love you.
Great movie. And it's before my time! I still genuinely like it. And Streisand is an absolute KNOCKOUT in this! SO Beautiful!
Loved this movie when as a kid.
I saw it in the movie theater when it premiered. I was 14. :)
Ryan O'Neal was very handsome as well!
Who cares if it was before your time? Why would that ever be problem?
@@jillkjv3816I was 15.
"How much is it without the buffering?" is a killer comedy line
Bufferin, but yes, it is funny
@@SJHFoto Buffering. Bufferin is a particular brand name for an aspirin that has buffering.
@@1955greenboy Sorry, but no-there is no "buffering"
@@SJHFoto Of course there is. It's true that buffering is usually used as an adjective, not a noun, and that the usual term is "buffered aspirin," as in "Buffered aspirin contains buffering agents." Nevertheless, Bufferin is a particular brand name of buffered aspirin -- aspirin that uses a buffering agent -- and "bufferin" itself is not a word other than that brand name. And in the film he says "buffering."
The transcript of this scene reads “buffering” when you click on it.
My favorite comedy, and the OG manic pixie dream girl.
"OG"?
@@nstix2009xitsn Yeah, I know, Bringing Up Baby, Roman Holiday, The Apartment, etc...are older, but Bugs Bunny in girl form is far more "manic pixie" then most.
Horton Crow I wouldn’t say Fran Kubelik is a mpdg though
@@TheHortoncrow I don't think Fran Kubelik is a MPDG.
Her eyes are gorgeous.
She’s beautiful
Indeed
Ya think???????
She's very beautiful! She can bug me, not leave me alone and get on my case anytime! She's a legend!
his too... both them R faded here ❣️🙏👀💙✨💙✨💙✨😆😄
She’s so uniquely beautiful. Cat eyes are like breathtaking, beautiful girl , eyes lips face. If you don’t think she’s beautiful, you’re blind.
One of my favorite movies from my youth.
Absolutely loved tie-ins to Buggs Bunny cartoons.
I just watched it again, found even more references I missed.
Lies again? Wedding Divorce
The moment you realize that you have never noticed that Streisand the actress is portraying Buggs Bunny throughout this scene...! Watch it again.
She has a Bugs Bunny look
Took me 50 years, had just figured it out when I read your post. I hope I figured it out before and just forgot, that would be easier to deal with.
Her whole character in the entire movie is basically Bugs Bunny (and Ryan O'Neal is Elmer Fudd).
We know.
She was also channeling Jerry Lewis, according to her and the director comments 😂
Thank you Ryan O'Neill for those entertaining movies God bless you RIP
‘How much is it without Buffrin?’ 😂love this movie from start to finish
Best comedy ever ❤️. Writing and acting is magnificent!
This movie is a certified comedy classic 👌
I was just on my way to bed when I found this clip on here and I just had to watch it even though I have this movie and know everything by heart in it🤣
"What's Up, Doc?" (1972) had a long run. In 1974, it was the final film to play at the Shawnee Aztec Theater in Kansas before it closed for 47 years. The theater is opening again October 27th, 2021 and it's screening "DRACULA" (1931) which was also screened at the Aztec 90 years ago. Time flies.
Interesting. Thanks.
My sister and best friend went with me to see this movie when I was 13 years old...WE LOVED IT!!!!!!
"well how much is it without bufferin?"
Howard looks like Brad from Rocky horror picture show
I absolutely love this film. never ever tire of it. Fabulous just fabulous
The funniest love film ever and beautiful and timeless!
Ryan O’Neal was fantastic in this movie.
He was. So was Barbara. But it was Madeline Kahn and Kenneth Marrs who really stole the show!?
@@neworleansguy10 Not a chance. This was Barbra's show, for keeps.
Nicholas Stix, Uncensored
neworleansguy10 Kenneth Mars stole every scene he was in. I agree!
They did another movie togther ... The main event he was a washed up boxer🥊🥊👁️ theygotgreatchemidtry ❣️❣️👌look how pretty they both were 😍😍
@@neworleansguy10 Madeline Khan is too funny sick 😅😅❣️thk it was her debut...
I'm a heavy metal fanatic, jazz, classical, playing guitar over 45 years.. I love this friggin movie.
No one cares about your life's story.
Apparently she's a pain in the ass to work with but I found Streisand absolutely adorable in this movie.... The price that must be paid.
Funny, I just read an interview with Peter Bogdonavich, who said he loved working with her, due to her good attitude, taking direction well, and being a pro
I GUESS THAT EXPLAINS THE SITUATION AS DUDLEY MOORE WAS STRUGGLING WITH HIS ILLNESS WHILE TRYING TO MAKE A FILM WITH HER
She is a perfectionist! But as she is a woman she is labeled “difficult to work with”.
she was so gorgeous in this movie, i LoVE her long, flippy silky hair, her eyes --!
maybe i'm the only one, but when she went into that period where she was wearing a short curly look i felt like it was a giant mistake... she looked gorgeous in 'the way we were', though...
@@janethalken8269 You're NOT the only one, Jane! I just looked at this clip and was immediately struck at how beautiful she looks in this film! Her eyes are gorgeous. I find her to be a very attractive woman. Perhaps strangely, I find myself unexplainably attracted to women with large noses...I've just realized that about myself over the past few years.
RIP Ryan O'Neal. You will be missed.
He was *smoking* in this film. What a looker. 😍😍😍😍
"I don't want people falling down in here." "Well, we're on our honeymoon..."
You don't know how much I want to say that line to someone at my job; the "falling down" line. That, or even "Don't touch his rocks."
@@garrettbays6942 Haha...well, at least *once* in my career I had occasion to say to a co-worker, "I relate primarily to quartz, micas...feldspar. You can keep your pyroxenes, magnetics and course-grained plutonics as far as *I'm* concerned..."🤓
@@scottclauscreations you're lucky.
While the main actors in this film are brilliant and marvelous to watch, I have to mention the extras on this film have some of the best delivery lines or facial expressions that you will be lucky to ever see again...okay, that's an exaggeration, but seriously, the extras in this film are hilarious! The driver that helps the government agent during the car chase; his psychotic smile and brilliant response, "(Overly eager) Oh! Alright!"; the cab driver that ditches Eunice at the thieves hideout, the guy on the ladder holding the banner, the hotel staff member when preparing the food in Howard's room while everyone around him is trying to put out the fire; the list goes on.
I be watching this movie all the time and it's still hilarious.
Why is that so hilarious when she points the carrot to her temple and whispers ''headache'' ...The whole movie is a trip !
Magic.
You mean at 0:55? She's so lovely!!
@@JustRememberWhoYoureWorkingFor Yes :)
@Veronica A. I first saw it at Radio City, and the place was full.. the sound of all those people laughing really enhanced the experience. One of my favorites movies
She really put the manic pixie dream girl on the map
You call this a honeymoon?!?!!?!?!?!?!
My favorite comedy of all time. Uproarious!! Madeline Kahn, in her debut film performance, and Kenneth Marrs really steal the movie from the 2 huge leads, Streisand and O’Neal, who were also pretty great.
Apparently, later, Kenneth ran a B&B with an extremely Draconian policy of blocking anyone from staying again if they commited the slightest indiscretion. Marrs bars...
neworleansguy10 You're very much mistaken. Nobody steals this picture from Barbra.
I remember I watched this movie at my local cinema in Chorlton, Manchester UK, I was 12 years old I loved it every minutes.
🤣 Hilarious. My favorite comedy of all time. Classy comedic p-e-r-fe-c-t-i-o-n. RIP Peter Bogdanavich and Buck Henry. You geniuses who conflated your talents to produce this comedy masterpiece. Bravo !👏
Ryan O'Neal, RIP (April 20, 1941 - December 8, 2023). Goodbye to a great American actor.
Ah. A *cash register*...where you had to...push buttons (!)...and...the clerk...is smoking (!)...in the store...while waiting on people.
Yeah, I miss those days....
Me too.
Filmed at the old street level gift shop at the entrance of the Hilton Hotel in San Francisco. I remember that small little place very well.
It's a cool little scene between them, but I'm also fascinated by the inventory in that store ! Those Danish cookies in the round blue tins...LOL
her eyes are so gorgeous
This is the funniest movie I have seen in my sixty eight years. I first saw this in 1972 and it's like rediscovering an incredible artwork every ten years.
Definitely one of my favourite films of all time!
Mine too!
One of my All time favorite movie
Omgawsh gurrl I NEED that hat! Luv her
truly a great movie
Barbara channels Bugs! A wonderful romp and a great car chase in San Francisco and Madeline Kahn being over the top funny, too much fun.
Absolutely THE BEST!!!! Barbara is EXTRAORDINARY beautiful!!!
She really is
Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neil meet for the first time in this scene.
perfect tribute to BRINGING UP BABY. love it
I saw this movie in the theater on a military base. Even as a kid the wackiness hooked me. its a total mistaken identity confusion chase movie and its really funny
This is my favourite comedy film. I've seen it so many times and it makes me laugh more every time I see it. I love it, its awesome! ,👍🤣😂😆❤️💯
I saw this movie on t.v. in 1980 (I think) when I was 14. I tuned in about 2 minutes before Ryan O'Neal removes the rock from the shelf, to reveal two of the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen...and I was in love.
Terrible audio volume. It nearly ruined this great scene. At age14, I was "in love" with Barbara Streisand from her role in this movie. I still find her character attractive.
I watch this at age 11 and I feel in love with her character here....... Kinda form the type I'm into.... God have it made my life hard.
I love her character too
She came,she saw, she conquered.
Judy may not have been the first Manic Pixie Dream Girl in cinema, but she was *my* first.
Watching it now on TV, oh what a gem!!
86 cents ! Lol cigarettes ! Cash register ! Lol
Rest In Peace Mr Ryan O'Neal.
best movie - EVER.
Apparently I’m in the super minority, but I think Barbra Streisand was smoking hot in the 60s and
70s. Those eyes…
I guess I’m in the super minority too then
she was faded & GORGEOUS 👄🗯️
You are NOT in the minority. She is a force of nature!
“I don’t want people falling down in here” 😂
sending condolences to Ryan O'Neil's family, friends, and colleagues! this was a comical movie.
I adore this movie and i adore Barbra
One of The Best !
If you are ever depressed and need a lift then watch this movie. I own it on DVD.
Love this movie
Cest fantastic
One of the classics 😎
One of my favorites reminds me of someone very dear to me😉
One of my favorites too. Not only because its so entertaining, but on a personal level that my parents brought me to see this at Radio City when it opened. I was thrilled by the whole experience, plus hearing thousands of people laughing
U 2 sweet!!!! But you know him so well??????🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱
😇😂😂😂😂👁️❣️😛
everytime i see it, makes me giggle 🤭 😂☺️😜😝😂😂💜💝
crazy that a radio would cost $70.00 in 1972! that would be over $400 at today's prices! granted it was in a hotel gift shop...
And it was on sale!
Electronics go down. In the 50's a color television cost as much as a good car. Now 1-200 dollars buys you one.
Beautiful lady rest in peace Ryan O'Neal's
Judy Maxwell may be the sexiest character in movie history. The piano scene? 🔥🔥🔥
I love this scene. Just noticed that Streisand's "carrot" changes colours, from yellowish, to brighter orange by the time he forgets why he came in there! She says "Headache.", with an orange carrot. 🙂
Lol. So cute
Gorgeous
All beautiful....no one compares x
How much is it WITHOUT the buffering? Lol!!
I wish I had someone to watch these scenes with. Great movie.
she is demonstrably smarter than him in 3 seconds...
Awesome!
mi ricorda la mia adolescenza Ryan O' Neal era bellissimo
"You call this a honeymoon!"
Lol, for sure
VERY FUNNY I LOVE THIS MOVIE
I haven't seen this movie in decades!👀👀
Anacin and Bufferin for your 1970's headaches.
I find Barbara Streisand very attractive back then.
She is wonderful just heard news Ryan O'Neal's died age 82
SURELY YOU GEST DOC🐴🐴🐴🐴
You can keep all her other movies, just give me this one. :)
Saw this when I was a child. I fell in love with Barbara. This scene I thought Ryan was so stupid., "she's gorgeous you full!"
Fun fact: Babs only did it as a favor to her friend Peter Bogdanovich and throughout filming was convinced she made a huge mistake (she just didn't see the humor) and basically handed the movie over to Madeline Kahn. No one was more (pleasantly) surprised than she when it became the third biggest grossing movie of 1972 only behind The Godfather and The Poseidon Adventure. Also, she and Ryan O'Neal were dating during filming.
Im 14 but this movie is still better than all the transformers movies, there is hope for my generation yet

This I was about 8/9 yo in 1972. I’m may not have seen this movie when it was running in theaters, but whenever I saw previews for showing on tv, when I was I kid, I watched it every time!
A close second is “The Party” with Peter Sellers, but I don’t think “The Party” would be acceptable today 😉
Edit: I live alone and I’m chortling through this clip. 😂
Really they can Actually make a Looney Tunes Movie out of this
Hahahaha....
