2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) 3.7 Electronic Shift Module (ESM) Problems U0404 P0700 Codes

- What to do if your Park, Drive, Neutral, and Reverse indicator on your dash all light on your dash. You will get U0404 and P0700 codes. The Jeep will not move, hesitate, buck, go into failsafe mode, or drive normal. If it does any of the above, pull over and restart the Jeep. Mine bucked and started to run normal after the lights flashed and the MIL or check engine light went on. Drove it 150 miles no problem. MIL or check engine light stayed on. You will get poor gas mileage, and the transmission will shift poorly. Save yourself over 1000 dollars and clean the ESM first. 99% chance its just dirty. Questions or comments leave below. I respond to everyone. Just trying to help you guys out and save you money. Like, share, and subscribe... You can do it all you will need is a small screwdriver, t10,t15, and t20 torq head screwdriver, 10mm socket, electronic contact cleaner, and 4-7 q-tips. takes around 30-45 mins to complete.

I have been going in to limp mode while driving and I notice it on high rpms and I try to manually shift using the + - on the shifter and nothing works. I pull over and restart the vehicle and all is well till it does it again. I cleaned this board and yes it was very dirty on the break points. Now it hasnt done it at all and it even shifts better. Thank you I was about to replace the transmission and honestly it would have done the same thing!!!!
@elmslawncare awesome brother glad to have helped. Save that hard earned money brother. Thanks for the feedback.
@@MrV2uDear MrV2u, Thank you for sharing this video it is really a stress reliever for some. I have another kind of problem with my ESM, it works properly in All PRND but, when I put it on Drive, I can't shift to - +, is there a way of adjusting this issue? (I am able to move the "handle" left right but cant go from D to 4321...)
I opened the upper part as you showed in the vid, There are two thin metallic pieces surrounding the black plastic square that is attached to the white horizontal one (shifter)... Should these be the problem? Could they be cleaned or adjusted? Many thanks😊😊
When you put it into manual shift all you do is hit the lever up to upshift and down to downshift. Is that not working?
@@MrV2u not for me, it is not working. ☹️ Could it be a board problem?
@@MrV2u To be honest, this problem appeared right after the "cover band" broke (the thing that covers against dust), so I had to open and remove it... and then this problem appeared (any relation to this manoeuvre?)
I've been a transmission tech for 21 years. You did a fantastic job on this video my friend! helped my stress level tons! Thanks, take care and God bless!
Thanks brother for the feedback. I try to be as thorough as possible. Bless you as well. If you have any further questions I’m always here to help my friend.
Update: The small two wire connector at the right rear of the shifter was broken. The big connector was fine. The board was new so someone had their hands in it before me. Made sure it was back together correctly and it worked perfect. Customer was happy.... Thanks again!
Too many cooks in the kitchen. Good catch my friend. Tracing electrical problems could be quick or an all day deal. I just had a guy with the same issue and swapped out the esm twice, and cleaned each one twice like I showed. Still having issues. I bet that’s his issue as well. Keep in touch brother.
@@MrV2u @ hello, i have the exact problem, but my first question : why need to disconnect the battery ? can i not to ?
@@xuchun5371 you don’t want to short anything out by not doing so.
Best instructional video yet. You get to the point quick fast in a hurry no endless talking about nothing. Thank you
Thanks for the awesome feedback brother. I try to be straight up and no fillers in any of my videos. Hope it helped you.
You sir, rock. I've a 06 Commander. The exact same shift module and interior shown on your video. Had the exact same codes and lights come on that you shown when I drove in to Buffalo from Jamestown NY a few weeks ago. Since I pretty much just bought the Jeep used, thoughts of "Crap, what did I get myself into??" flew through my head. Did research, found your channel. Spent yesterday doing exactly, step by step following along in your video. Worked perfectly. Thank you again for being such a valued resource and doing them is such a clear, concise and no "techno-jargon" that the average layman can follow. :)
Everything is the exact same on the commander as the Grand. The dreaded first drive lol. I'm glad I could help a fellow Jeeper out. Thanks for the feedback it means the world to me. If you should ever run into anything I'm always around for help.
I couldn't have said it any better!!!
Three years later and you're still helping people! Just wanted to say thank you for the detailed video. I had the same issues and was happy to find out that it was a rather simple fix.
Thanks again.
Your very welcome brother. I try my best to help out as much as I can. Glad it worked out good for you brother. If you should ever need any more advice I’m always around.
Hello , I have 2006 Jeep , my dash lights were all flashing having no problems with shifting . Plugged the code reader in # u0404 Gear shift control module . Can I do this to my Jeep ? I’m not sure what to do
You defiantly can do it for your Jeep.
Gave my kid an 06 Cherokee for Christmas and having exactly this problem on Dec 28th. Headed out to pull apart the shifter. THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you very much for your video! Your instruction was spot on. I did have one screw that was a T9 instead of a T10. Really appreciate it!
Your very welcome brother, glad to help. Thanks for the feedback. Tricky Jeep mixing a t9 in the mix.
My Jeep is having this same situation and no one, neither the dealer had been able to tell me what it was. All they said was that it was an issue with something related to vapor emitions, that my car would not pass the regular revision due to contamination issues. May the Lord bless you and multiply your business, for all the help that you have delivered to so many people, including me. Thank you so much.
Ricardo Cajina does it have a check engine light on or do you know the codes it has? If the lights around the indicator are all on like mine this should fix it no problem. Let me know I’ll dig into it more and try to help you. Thanks so much for your blessings. All things possible with Him at our side.
Hello again MrV2u, I do not know the codes, but the mechanic checked in on and said two things: The EGR valve is giving slight problems, it is recommended to replace it. And the error that it shows is related to transmission gear, but on the scanner it reads something like unspecific error, so there is no code. He said he had to check if there was a situation with the gear or the solenoid. But on the EGR subject, I found this Omix-Ada 17712.05 EGR Valve that indicates to fit my vehicle. Can you tell me if I should buy this instead of a Mopar EGR valve which Price is twice the Omix-Ada one.?
The omix-ada 17712.05 is for a 05-06 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 motor. If that’s what you got go for it brother. I’ve seen codes set off random codes and once you fix one problem the rest clear. Let me know how it works out brother.
Thanks man. Jeep wouldn't shift on the highway on my way home form work. Followed this and fixed it. Your the best and your videos always appear when I need help. I hope the views and subs are helping take care of you and make making the videos worth it cause it's saving me time and money

Hey man quick question what was it doing dor you to have to do this ours is ahifting to like 3rd and it quits shifting shut if off start it back up and its dine until it does it again any info would help
It was acting a fool. Lol this issue would cause anything from: hard shifts, holding gears longer than normal, putting the Jeep into limp mode, illuminating all the shift indicators on the dash, check engine light, feels like the Jeep is bucking, etc etc. Its not a bad job to do, and will save you money in the long run. Let me know if that helps or how you make out brother.
@@MrV2u I could definatley use your avice/expertice if this step does not fix the po700 issuewhats next?
@@richardbeach8689 causes of the P0700 code could be: Faulty transmission control module,
Transmission valve body fault, Shift solenoid issues, Open or short in the wiring harness. With that many miles brother I’m leaning toward getting the tranny rebuilt. Sorry to say brother.
The fix worked perfectly! Thanks so much for taking the time to make such a helpful video.

They might be soldered to the circuit boards bro. Pull the switch out and check, but I’m pretty sure there not replaceable unless you solder them off and get some new ones to solder back on.
This worked for me, I used a pencil eraser to good effect cleaning the spaces between the contract surfaces. It worked seriously well. Clean the eraser residue afterwards so I'd doesn't collect the graphite as fast.

I have never commented on a UA-cam video before, but had to in order to thank you for posting this video. I recently bought a 2005 Jeep Cherokee Laredo and these same error messages kept happening. I showed this video to the mechanic that I bought the Jeep from, he cleaned the graphite off, and I haven’t had any issues since then. He didn’t even charge me for the fix. So thank you so much for this video, as it popped right up when I searched for the issue I was having.
That’s awesome brother. Thanks for the feedback. And if you have any questions in the future I’m around for advice.
What kind of problems were you having ? My dash lights were flashing having no problems of shifting, I plugged my code reader in and it’s saying # u0404 Gear control module. I don’t know what to do . It still drives fine dash lights are gone .
It can drive ok for now but eventually you’ll have shifting issues and might go into limp mode. Try to clean it and prevent other issues down the road brother.

I had this problem recently. Cherokee was stuck in 3rd gear and check engine light came on. Took apart the gear shift and the control board was fairly dirty. I didn’t have any electronic cleaner, so I used some mass airflow sensor cleaner instead. I figured they’re the same. Put it all back together, Jeep ran normal and the check engine light turned off the next day. Getting to the control board, I had to use smaller hex/star whatever screwdriver. But the process was all the same really. I wonder if because my Cherokee is the special 65 year edition, that maybe the hardware was a little different than yours. Anyways, I’m writing to tell you how grateful I am you posted this. I bought my Cherokee in December of 08 and had her for almost 15 years now. My wife wants a newer vehicle, but seeing how the price of everything these days is so ridiculous, I’d rather fix our cars up than put up with dealerships and the quick depreciation of newer cars. Thanks again man, these kinds of how to videos are lifesavers
I had a 65th anniversary too brother. I agree with you 100 percent with keeping your current car up and running as long as possible. Interest rates let alone new car prices are astronomical. Jonathan Knoll thanks brother. Hope it helps you. Any questions I’m always around to help.
Awesome, here is my tip on top,
The car will still drive in auto but not in semi manual mode ,
I have to literally do this with my 06 Jeep SRT8 every 8-12 months, cause that’s a Mercedes part that’s not easy to come by at a cost of $800,
You DON’T need to dismantle the entire console, just remove the shifter module, and disconnect the cable, document how you take it apart with photos first time you take it out if you’re unsure,
The idea is to clean out the board, so cotton tips, buds and electronics cleaner, rub any graphite you see parallel to the board and make sure you do it many times over and over till it doesn’t show any dirt on the cotton.
You’ll have to be gentle with the clips the most as you take it apart, clean out the housing and the underneath area while you’re at it,
What I found is that in most cases it will take about a 1 to 3 days of driving for it to work again after you clear the codes or just put it back together,
some days it worked right away and other times it took a few days.
Just be patient and don’t rush it, this is not something you want to break, scratch or damage by any means.
If it doesn’t work after a few days of driving, repeat the process and it will eventually work, it just means it needs more cleaning.
You don’t have cleaning solution, use alcohol wipes, but not direct alcohol LOL
You're the real MVP!
Thanks brother. And I’m always around for advice.

i have a 2006 jeep commander with the 3.7. abs...esp...and traction control lights are always on and it hesitates to shift. more than likely my brake light will come on and at that point it will not shift other than from park to drive reverse....just wont shift up and down going down the road. will this fix it?
I’m 80% sure you have a bad hub assembly. That’s where the wheels bolt to the Jeep. The hub assembly has a tone ring and abs sensor in it. Those symptoms point to a defective one. To be sure you need to scan for codes. It will point to the bad wheel. You can go to autozone or advance auto and have them scan your car for free. Let me know how you make out.
OK mines wen I drive the rpms Jus go up up up and never shifts gear would this fix it I was told the transmission Jus stops in one gear and gives out or is the shifter the problem cause all of mines have the circles around them and it won't go in 4x4 either or anything wen I move it side to side

Nathan Staats this fix should help you brother. Some codes are set because of this problem. Clean it out and clear your codes. Then take a test drive and see if they could me back. Excellent video sir! I’d love your help. Any tips on clearing PCM failure? P1697 engine code. Nobody near me wants to help. I have no idea.
Robert Urban that might be a dealer repair brother. That’s why no one wants to help. Trouble Code: P1697 PCM Failure (EMR/SRI Mileage Not Stored) Trouble Code Conditions:Key on, and the PCM detected an unsuccessful attempt to "write" the Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) or Emission Mileage Request (EMR) mileage to an EEPROM located occurred during initialization. Possible Causes: Clear the trouble codes and retest for the same trouble code. If DTC P1697 resets, replace the PCM and then reprogram it. It might cost a lot. Clear the code if you have a reader and see if it pops up again. Let me know how you make out.
Thanks!
Man brother I really appreciate the support. Glad the video helped you out. Keep on Jeeping my friend. If you ever have any questions I’m always around for advice.
Is there anything we can put between the cleaned contact points to help prevent that graphite for forming again ???
No brother it has to make that contact. The graphite makes it possible to slide across the contacts, but when it builds up and makes that solid connection it messes things up.
You think the ESM would be the issue for a 07 grand cherokee 4.7 stuck in park even if it's not throwing any codes for it? Professional computer didn't find anything for it... First issue I noticed was when I put it in park and shut the car off the wheel wouldn't lock, I could turn it all the way around. Then I would have issues getting the key to turn over had to jiggle it for a while. Finally one day when the key wouldn't turn over I pulled the shifter into neutral to try to get the key to turn, it didn't so I put it back in park. Finally got the key to turn and that's when it was stuck in park, been like that since.
Dylan Webb awhile back there was a recall for the ignition switch. Has that been done to your Jeep? Seems to me like a ignition switch issue. If you have heavy keys on your key ring that could throw it off. That’s what the dealer says lol. Let me know if you had the recall done.
My 05 JGCL keeps going into 3rd , when you crank it you can tell its going to be in 3rd. Sometimes can turn it off and start again wont be like that other times it'll take 15 times to get right . any idea if i should try this?
Kimberly Duncan do you have a check engine light on? If so can you get the codes? Autozone or advance auto will pull the codes for you for free. It wouldn’t hurt to clean the contacts as shown in the video. It might solve all your issues. But without the codes it’s hard to say for sure.
you are bad ass to the bone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thx great teacher
I’ve been told I’m bad to the bone lmao. Thanks for the love. How you make out brother?
My 08 GC pulls codes 0730, 0731, 0732. I have already put in $1,300 to replace the TCM and the problem still isn't fixed. My Jeep, like others, will jerk during acceleration, not go above 40mph and my gas mileage tanks. I also have to turn the car off and back on which seems to work most of the time. Could this be my ABS sensor? Any help is appreciated!!
Did they do a “Quick Learn” reprogram when they installed the TCM? This is a reflash of the computer. If they did try to clean the ESM like I did in the video. Let me know how you make out brother.
05 Jeep Grand Cherokee, stuck in 1st gear, and also when I turn off and turn back on and try to drive it says the e brake is on. Throwing the code you showed of the p700 keeps been acting funny for a while throws the shifts hard or stays stuck or goes slow etc hopefully this will fix.
It should help you out. You might have a secondary problem with the e brake. Start with this fix. And let me know how you make out.
Thank you..... I have three different lights on..... traction control,ESP BAS... And the code came up...lost connection to shift module .... Hopefully this will fix it.....
It should solve all your issues brother, let me know if it doesn’t or if you have any further questions.
You are awesome, thank you!
Daniela Espinal thanks for the awesome feedback. I try my best. If you have any questions I’m always around for advice.
I think I’m having the same problem as jenna here, I’ll try to fix it this weekend. I have this app with sprint that send me the codes directly to my phone. I’ll see if I can send you a picture of what it says.
Well I can’t post the picture but it says OBD-ll code U0404. Nothing else after that.
That’s the code I got. This should fix your problem. When you disconnect the battery in the first step and finish the job it will clear your check engine light. Take your time and you’ll be good to go. Let me know how u make out! Good luck...
MrV2u Thank you lifesaver!
good video
Thanks for the feedback sis!
Great video thank you. Did anyone get the ESM out without removing the whole containing console. There is a Dorman video where they look like they just removing the direct top 4 torx screws, remove the cable & lift it right out.
You can do it without removing the entire console. I was showing you the correct way so you have a better understanding.
05 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 3.7 codes u0404 p0700 no other codes. I did this and drove around a few blocks the car was fine. I turned the car off to go into a store when I started it back up I'm getting a loud whining/ squealing sound on the passenger of the vehicle the sound is in all gears it stays the same in each gear. Doesn't get louder or lower ( It sounds like a bad serpentine belt or water pump) both brand new. Could it be a bad TCM or trans pump?? Thank you
Was it making noise before you tried cleaning the contacts? It can very well be a bad pump brother. A bad pump will give you shifting problems, noisy trans, slipping, etc… I wish we had dipsticks to check the condition of the fluid which could show; burnt or low levels.
My Jeep stalls as it shifts to 3rd and sometimes stalls when I back up. Do you think if I cleaned this it could help.
It’s a very good chance this will help brother. Do you have any check engine lights on? If so do you know the codes?
Thank you for this video. It is not only helpful but simple to follow as well. Just a quick question though. Will this work on a 2007 jeep grand Cherokee with the 5.7 hemi that has the 5 speed gear box or is it just for the 3.7? Great video brother. Just had to say that again.
Thanks Greg means a lot to know I’m helping out. It will work in your Jeep as well. Let Mel. Is how you make out or if you have any other questions. Good luck my friend.
Hi I'm having shifting issues with my 2007 jeep laredo when I shift it to go to drive D it says 4 instead do you have any clue what that could mean?
Do you have a check engine light on?
My 06 Grand Cherokee has been pulling the codes P0700 and U0404. I did everything in the video and the light stayed on. I turned it off with my code reader and it stayed off for a few ignition cycles. When the light came back on, still the same codes. Took it to O'Reily's, seeing how they said they can read tranny codes. Their scanner said the same codes. They told me it should be the ESM and also the TCM, but the ESM should be changed first. The PDRN indicator shows all four boxes around the letters but when I tap the shifter to the right, the boxes go away. There are minor driving issues. So was wondering before I shell out money to the dealership to check it, has there been a find between the ESM or TCM to be the culprit?
The p0700 is a general code for faulty transmission. It can also be anything from a faulty shift solenoid to a TCM. But being that your still getting the u0404 could be a failing ESM. Let me know what they come up with brother.
@MrV2u does anybody know where I can buy a shifter dust cover mine's broken? Just the duster cover that you take off @7:35? Thank you!
Most likely that’s a dealer only item. But you can always go to a junk yard and get one. You don’t need the whole thing and if they have a place that lets you pull the part even better. Hope that helps brother.
get a piece plastic make it yourself.
You are a national treasure
Truly appreciated, glad the video could help.
@MrV2u Dear MrV2u, Thank you for sharing this video it is really a stress reliever for some.
Many thanks😊😊😊
Thanks
You got it my friend.
Our 08 Santa fe doesn't go into park or drive. Last saturday, the shifter started getting hard to move. On that day, I was able to put it in drive, and i put in transmission fluid to make sure it was at a good fluid level. Then I got into the interstate and sped up to 80 mph and down to 0 without any problems. After that day, the shifter didn't let me put it in drive or park anymore.
I'm going to try this and also clean the electrical connections with electrical contact cleaner to see if this fixes our issue.
AC Padilla make sure you don’t overfill the transmission. Get vehicle hot and check with engine running and in park. Your going to have to go under the truck and have someone with the engine off cycle the shifter while you watch the lever on the transmission move. Make sure it’s not binding. Not sure if your able to see it. It shouldn’t be hard to roll through the gates. It might be binding.
What I did on my jeep was a electrical issue. Yours sounds like a hardware issue. It might be completely different from my setup. Let me know how you make out. I’ll do some research for you if you get stuck.
5 Star Jeep Club thanks for the response. I was able to fix it and it's apparently a common Hyundai issue. The shifter shaft got stuck. I had to remove the shift cable and neutral safety switch, then sprayed wd40 and lube on it. I grabbed it with an 11 mm wrench and wiggled it until it started moving again. I kept moving it around with the wrench while spraying more liquid so it would seep more into the shaft. I then reassembled everything and my problem was resolved.
AC Padilla awesome. Like my pops always told me fix it yourself. Subscribe to my channel. Going to be branching out to different manufactures. Thanks for your response.
