If you are not intimidated by some disassembly work you can disconnect the negative battery terminal then remove the ESM unit. You can replace it with a new one (several hundred dollars) or try cleaning the circuit board on the inside. It seems complicated at first but it really is not that bad. The "gaps" on the circuit board inside the ESM get "streaked" with graphite residue over time and then it can't tell what gear it's in. Open it up and you'll see what I mean.
"The fix" is to confirm wiring/signal integrity (which he did), confirm confirm gear selector module power and grounds (which he did not, at least in the vid), and then if all those check out, replace the gear shift selector module with a new unit. Probably requires programming of the new unit too. I would also check for any related SIB's, or reflash possibilities, before replacement too.
Just the location of that Switch alone makes it look as if a spilled can of soda might wreak havoc on it. But then again Jeep Grand Cherokee isn't known for its superior design or durability(are they).

Remember when a lever or cable was used to put vehicles in gear and they lasted forever, maybe replace a worn cable but those metal rods worked for centuries. too many electronic shifters with expensive problems.
How can u post a video without the fix.
The fix is to either replace the ESM or you can take the board out yourself, clean it where the graphite lines are and then reinstall it and it will fix the issue. The problem is that after so many times of shifting the graphite leaves a trail of graphite or lines connecting the P / R / N / D to each other which places the system in limp mode or "safe mode". This is why the P / R / N / D all have a box around them. You can pay to have the ESM replaced or you can clean up the graphite that is connecting the lanes to each other and it will solve your problem.
What would of happen if you had disconnected the harness to that shifter assembly?

The Transmission is on safe mode that's why there is no Communication
just follow instructions below it will all go back to normal
[L]Disconnect the POSITIVE battery Terminal and touch it to ground for 30 seconds. (This is to discharge the PCM capacitors, which maintain the Adaptive Memory.
Reconnect the Battery Cable
Turn Ignition Switch to the “On” position but DO NOT start the engine
Turn Headlight “On”
Turn Headlights “Off”
Turn Ignition Key “Off”[/L]

"Shifter Control Module being defective" must have been the fix. He said it a couple times. I'm assuming he checked power and grounds to the module too.
I have the same code on 05 Chrysler 300c 5.7 engine should I replace the shifter. Code is uo103 ? Long story short it was on on park didn't want to come of park so I forced it to d which is drive, and it's on limp mode. Thanks any help will be appreciated.

My transmission is doing the same thing will not go in drive or reverse but fluid was pink after that happened ots brown now

Hello: I have a 2000 G. Cherokee Laredo, I just made the transmission service (change oil, filter and gasket) before this the jeep was working just perfect, but right after the mechanic did it, the "engine light" came on it is not shifting correct.
The scaner read say: 1 & 3 shift out of range and also pressure problem (something like that). The level in the stick show it is correct.
I will really appreciate if someone who know about it could tell what are the possibles problems.

My friend I'm having does same problem well kind of the shifter the park neutral and drive display panel all of it will light up then I will tap the shifter and all the lights will go back to the regular setting and it will shift why does the check engine light come on when its a transmission problem
I own a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Loredo that was giving me the same trouble code and symptoms as the one in this video. I originally brought it to the Jeep dealership and was quoted approx. $700 for the repair. Since I had more time than money I did a little research and was able to perform the repair at home using a pencil eraser and conductive grease. That was two years ago, everything is still running smoothly. Am I just really lucky or can this repair be that easy?

Why are you using a piercing probe? Backprobing should be the only way if possible and your connector is right there

He did post the fix - he told you if you listen.... he said the shift control module is not responding to the signal so that is your problem. THE SHIFT CONTROL MODULE (ESM/Electronic Shift Module). There... you have it spelled out for you.

Good video, I have the same car and all the blocks around prnd are lit up it won't downshift I'm wondering if this is the same issue and is it a recall? Because I searched my vin and it didn't show up as recall but yeah single mom status just wondering if this is something I have to pay to fix or would it be a recall?
can you help me I drove my 98 jeep grand Cherokee I dove about 10 miles everything was normal the transmission shifted great nice and smooth and on mark then on the way home I slow from 55 I stop at a light I accelerate again all of a sudden I can feel somethings not right the engine begins to reave lost so much power it slowly shifts at the 20 then again at 30 my take off is very slow compared to its normal get up and go I barely get it to 40 it will not go into overdrive at all and there is no check engine light it will still go into gear just fine reverse drive neutral all still work it just wont shift.

Great video Hiram! My 2005 JGC Laredo is doing this, PRND all lit up, goes into limp mode every stop, change gears to N and back to D and sometimes works, sometimes have to do a quick restart lol , I have a appt at Jeep monday for them to read it. Is this something I can change myself? Think its the ECM that needs replacing?

I took the shifter box apart, and there is a computer chip/board in there and i took a qtip with a little rubbing alcohol and cleaned all the carbon off the strip. worked perfect! no more issues!!!

I have the same Jeep GC. I can shift the automatic shifter down to lower gears (4, 3, 2, 1), but it will not shift back up to D until I put it in Neutral. Is it something simple like cleaning or since i had the transmissions fluid changed I head that I need to get its computer 'RESET'? Do you think that will fix the issue or not related? Not sure when it started. thanks for your video as well.

hey brother my wife was driving her 06 jeep grand cherokee today said she was going about 20 mph and all of a sudden said she felt like it went into neutral . she took it to the jeep dealer said that we need to replace the whole shifter is that correct info? or are they just trying to get money from us? they quoted 700 just for the part. i was not present at the time so i want to be 100% sure its that.

Yeah what was the problem sir? I have one where the curtain fell apart and will not allow the shifter to go into park.im waiting to hear a mechanic tell me that because a 10cent piece of plastic broke I need the EHOLE shifter assembly.amazing how much faith gets put into frail plastic tabs to keep these assemblies together

Hello there, I am getting a P0700 code in a 2005 gc laredo 4.7 liters 4x4... Everytime when I start the truck, start in 3 gear, my mechanic told me is the selenoid module, but Im not sure, I cant shift a less gear or 4 gear, and even cant use the D (drive), just 3 gear all time, please help me

@Alejandro Garcia sigo con el problema, apenas pedí traer una computadora de EEUU en las siguientes dos semanas te tengo una respuesta amigo, aunque te recomiendo ir a un buen mecánico porque puede ser el modulo de selenoides (solenoid pack), escanéala bien, que te de los subcódigos y a ver si ahí te dice de manera más precisa qué es. Necesitarás un buen escaner
CÉSAR ARMANDO REYES AGUILAR Yo le cambie la computadora a mi jeep porque se me pagaba seguido y quando le cambie la computadora se arreglo ese problema pero a la semana empezo con el limp mode so yo mande la computadora a la tienda donde la compre para que la revisaran y me dejeron que estaba bien so mi mecánico me dijo que podría ser el solenoid pack pero no se los a cambiado porque no esta seguro porque dice que tambien podría ser la transmission ...que me recomenda? Y tres mecanicos me han dicho lo mismo

I am getting a u0404 code...its a 2005 gc laredo... it shifts erratically and does not downshift..sometimes sets off in second gear...what do you think it could be???

Hi and I have a 2006 jeep commander with the same problem, I took it to a shop and they replaced the ESM! And also the ECM! This fixed the problem for two days then it went back to the original problem, they switched out the parts again with new parts again and still after 2 days it went back to same issues. They sent the jeep to a second shop and they couldn't figure out the problem, finally I took it to the dealer and they couldn't figure out the problem, now here's the interesting part the jeep will start find in warm weather but once it gets a little cold it goes back to all the [P][R][N][D] being lit up and won't stay on for more then 1 second. I've recently discovered if I lock my doors and set the alarm then disconnect the positive battery terminal& wait about 30 seconds before reconnecting, it will trigger the alarm and then my jeep will start, please if anyone has any idea what's causing this, message me!

Went to the dealership today, and this code was pulled for my 2007 Grand Cherokee. The mechanic told me this code was "in memory" and not hard something..? what the hell did he mean by in memory? I'm a woman and wanted to get the hell out of there before I got pulled into spending money. so i didnt ask him. Help?

we got this jeep a little over a month ago.
I have had the same issue not shifting into second or third etc, now at times it will not shift down when coming to a light, current mileage is 77K, the vehicle gives no indication it will no longer down shift you just find out in your own, if I turn the vehicle off and back on it works fine, this is the Electronic Shift module in the center console, NAPA sells it for $545, not sure what the dealer would want, however I have read even after being replaced they still fail, These Vehicles are just a POS and I will never ever purchase another one
