  • DIY of electronic shift module cleaning for Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4. If you are attemping to replicate the procedure in this video then your vehicle is likely operating in an unsafe manner already. The ESM is considered a non-serviceable item, therefore I accept no responsibility for damages, personal or property, that may occur from anyone who attempts this procedure for themselves. You are responsible for anything you do to your own vehicle. Thank you.

You my friend are a lifesaver!!! Just purchased a 2005 Grand Cherokee and sometimes it wouldn’t shift into high gear. Thought I had transmission issue but read and followed this process!!!Now shifts perfect!!Amazing! Can’t thank you enough!

This video is great, can't thank you enough. I have a 2006 Cherokee with 83,000 miles which would sometimes not shift from 1st to 2nd. All the lights PRND would all illuminate at same time and check engine light would come on. I took it to the jeep dealership who of course wanted to look at it further and probably charge me over $500 for a new shifter and $300 for labor ($800).
After doing my own research I realized it was likely the shifter issue as described in this video. I followed the video step by step and spent 3 hours this afternoon taking out the console, etc.
I purchased electric solution cleaner and sure enough, the lines between the spaces were clearly visible. After cleaning the graphite streaks I put everything back together.
I then cleared the code and took the jeep for a drive. Sure enough it ran perfectly and transmission shifted smoothly. Thanks to this great video I saved myself at least $500

My 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee check engine light came on with codes P0700 and U0404. With some online research I narrowed it down to the ESM, which either needed cleaned or replaced. I used your video to try cleaning it. There was a significant amount of graphite trails going across the gaps, so I cleaned the whole thing. I put it back together and reconnected the battery. The CEL stayed on for a few minutes, then shut off on its own. Test drive went great. No issues after ten minutes, so this initially looks like a success. Thank you so much for posting this video. I would have had no clue how to do this and would have paid $1000+ for a mechanic to replace. Thank you!

+Jason Westman You're welcome... hope it ends up doing the trick for you. At least you also know how to replace the part with a new one if it comes to that at some point without paying somebody else to do it. Mine continues to work fine three years after the last cleaning so hopefully you'll have the same luck.

Just out of interest: How many miles did the jeep have when it occured? I have one with only around 60.000km / 40.000miles on it: And have the problem, but it seems early for me to have the graphite smear already, hence the question.

    • @nickk2431
      @nickk2431 4 роки тому +2

@@janpaulussen4928 mine has 112k on it. Just cleaned it. Working great so far. I'd clean it again after a couple months. Get the residual graphite off. It should last a long time.

I want to thank you for taking the time make this video. I have a 2005 grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L AND I WAS HAVING the problem of my transmission shifting randomly into 3rd gear every 30 seconds of driving only after purchasing the vehicle 1 month prior to this... until I came to a stop and restarted it and it would go back to "D". Sure enough after 45 more seconds it would again shift hard and show "3". I searched every website to help find answers and I finally came across this video. So I Infact gave it a try and did exactly what u said and wah la...problem solved!!! You saved me hundreds of dollars and I thank you again!!!

Just a quick thank you for taking the time to make this video. My '07 Jeep GC shifting started to go a bit wonky by locking into a low gear and all shift positions boxed out. Could clear it with a stop, shift to park and then back to into D but didn't want to push it to a complete failure. With a little research I came across your video. Nothing was left out and all worked well. Especially appreciated the detail on when to be careful - my track record is to usually damage one or two tabs. Much appreciated and thanks again.

I took the jeep to mechanic and got quoted 1300 for the work, as a university student i couldn't afford this repair. luckily i found your video through the forums and after following your guide my jeep is running better than ever!

Thanks for your expert tutorial video on removing the shift module on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee and cleaning the contact points. Followed your tutorial step by step, slowly, removed and cleaned the contacts. Drive shifting works really good now. There are vehicle breakdowns that are best left to the auto mechanics but I appreciate it when people like yourself dedicate their time to teach us how we can learn and do some of the not so complicated auto mechanical breakdowns. Much appreciated! Robert

Many thanks for this. Been getting a few transmission related error codes recently and ‘juddery’ gear changes, so I did this yesterday. Your video is great. I didn’t replace the two screws holding the 4WD thing in place. Will use some fixing tape so I don’t have to remove the entire console next time. It was good to recover two lost pens and numerous old coins though, that had fallen in through where the parking break gap is, and give it all a vacuum.
When I put the ESM back over the gear stick I forgot to feed it through the white plastic hole first (that’s underneath). Oops. All fitted back in now. Will take it for a run this morning to see what’s changed :)

Thank you very much for this U-Tube Post. I was having daily problems with my 2007 Laredo going into limp mode. Why this is not a recall is beyond understanding! The dealer wants your money on this one.
I followed these instructions, watching the Video. This is a great Video! This saved me $850.00. The Guy at AutoZone, who worked for Chrysler for 7 years said he did many of these, cleaning the traces on the control board may fix it. He said it was easy. I googled and found this video .
I disassembled as instructed above on the 2007 Laredo. Everything came apart as in the Video. The hardest part was the chrome piece under the knob twisting it the correct direction to get it off. You need the correct tool to unscrew the assembly, which you can get at any tool supply.
Lightly rubbing with a pencil eraser removed the carbon on the traces, and on the blanks between them. I followed up with rubbing alcohol on Q-tips to clean. This worked like a charm! The Engine light went out after 2 days, and has stayed off. I think the Jeep is performing better.
    Thanks again! PCR

Thanks for the vid. My ESM (2007) went south after only 17K miles. At 23K it started acting up again. I actually wrote the head of Mopar/Cust Service and two days later (read a few hours ago) I got a call saying they're cutting me a check for what it cost (~$1300) the last time this problem happened. (Yeah, I know...I don't drive much)
So much trouble over a bit a crud on a circuit board! Contact cleaner to the rescue! But kudos to Chrysler for making it right.

I used alcohol and Q-Tips, then I put a coat of DeoxITFaderLube Liquid which is made for plastic to plastic and metal fader/sliders which should extend the cleaning interval substantially. Very much appreciated. Great video. '06 Commander all time 4x4 started intermittently not wanting to upshift out of either 1st or 2nd gear. Has been running well for just over a week so hopefully this was the issue. About 30 minutes worth of work (did not have to take apart entire console due to all-time 4x4 in this model) and a $15 can of circuit board cleaner from Radioshack.

Thanks Chad...great video..I finally got round to doing this.I now understand why you have to remove the console...just to get to those two screws holding the 4WD T bar!
I found the console a pain so I have speed taped the base of the T bar assy to the plastic tray base rather than the screws up from the bottom. Now the ESM can be removed very easily without having to mess with the console.

I need to add to this stream as this is a huge liability issue for the manufacturer. First of all, thank you for your information video...I spent the day taking your suggestions and they helped tremendously. My vehicle went from performing hazardous and cautionary for accident pron to being safe . Forget the recall, the manufacturer should have plenty of information on this and they are just weighing the cost hoping their insurance covers them...this is a huge class action waiting to happen with punitive implications . I am sure they monitor all of these sights so I am sure they are on notice of the liability and their insurance company should be also. i will FIND OUT WHO THEY ARE INSURED with AND PUT THEM ON NOTICE AS WELL .. i will send a formal letter just in case they hope to fly under the radar..... Such an easy fix thanks to your knowledge and the manufacturer has remained silent for years allowing their dealerships to charge money for their incompetence and negligence!!!

Well thank you for the video, I did it this evening after the dealership told me that it was the glow plug module (diesel) and it seemed to be shifted

I did it once last year and there was still no symptoms 25,000km later. I did it again as a preventative measure this year while making this video so I really don't know how long one cleaning would actually last. I consider once a year well worth it for myself though. It will likely depend on how bad the streaking is on the circuit board gaps and if you can be patient and clean it all very well.

2006 Jeep Commander AWD. This procedure saved a ton of money and took only a bout a half an hour to accomplish. The vehicle would sometimes not shift out of second gear, the check engine light illuminated and stayed on and it was showing about 7 transmission faults when the codes were checked. Removed the module and cleaned the circuit strip as suggested. It was very dirty and a lot of carbon. Two weeks after the procedure everything continues to be working as it was supposed to and all codes are cleared. Thanks a bunch. Great fix.

Chad Greene Well, now for the rest of the story. Turned out that the "fix" only lasted a few weeks and then back to limp mode. Took it in to the shop and found some leaking fluid lines and a rear seal. Not enough to lose much fluid but enough to change the fluid pressure. Replaced the lines and seal and no subsequent issues. So far no additional issues for several months.

Great video...will try! My problem is limp mode and PRND being lit up as well. Preceding this EVERY time I get a "service park assist" warning w/ PRND lighting up then limp mode. From what I read it's the TCM or ESM, possibly both. Any ideas on TCM location and replacement if this video doest work? Thanks again!

Hi Chad! , I try to clean my ESM but didn't work, so I ordered a new one on ebay, I change it today but I have the same problem, do I need to change the entire console? or do I need to buy it at the dealer? please advise,

Hi, thanks for the video. I've done this in 2011 as per jeepforum instructions which are the same you put in here. No problem since but as you said maybe doing it as a preventative measure is worth it.

this is amazing ive had this problem on my '07 aswell its rare but it does happend now that i have seen your vid, i plan on cleanning this module asap.
but one question? have you or anybody else been having problems with "TRANSMISSION OVER TEMPERATURE" come on were the PRND display is at? i had this problem already twice the first tiem the dealer told me i had to replaced the trans the second time i took it to a friend he replaced the celonoids and trans module control and fixed. but i wanted to know if you had this problem and how could i fix it if it happens again?

Yes intermitting on our 2006 Commander and under investigation. We are installing independend temperature sensors to have a real reading. Good extra ground cable from battery minus to engine is worth an extra #6 high flex wire.

I was wondering if I sprayed the plug in of the esm with contact spray, would that be ok?
