    How long can I leave the water going to the water heater off? Will it damage the water heater if the water is turned off. I have a gas water heater

    Mine does not look like that. it has a flat long metal piece that is attached on the side. It doesn't really budge when I give any pressure and not knowing if that's the right piece I don't want to tug too hard. Do I try to move it out? or up?

    My water heater is leaking but it’s leaking into my house (even though the water heater is in the garage). It’s because of the foundation it’s leaning if the direction inside. I tried turning off the water supply to water heater, then I turned the main water back on, but the after heater continued to leak. I thought I had disconnected it. I wondered if it was leaking because there was some residual water running through the line perhaps? Not sure.
    I may try this again, but I’m almost afraid the contents of the water heater will flood my house.
    Edit: I just read a few other comments and it’s suggested to turn on a couple of faucets (hot water) to let the water run out. Maybe that will solve the problem.

    Not useful to me. The valve was in that spot, but it wasn't that kind of valve, it was the kind you open or close specifically by turning a circular thing clockwise or counterclockwise like a garden water spigot, and I could not turn it, and I didn't know whether I should be tightening it or loosening it anyway. If it was currently ON despite being so tight I couldn't turn it, how the hell tight would I need to make it to turn off the water?

      You have a gate valve. Lefty loose, right is tight. Sometimes when they are old they are harder to turn.

    My bathtub is leaking 20 gallons of hot water/hour. is it safe to just shut off the water supply to the hot water heater? It won't build up pressure or anything, causing a huge explosion?

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  2 роки тому +3

      Yes you can shut-off the water supply to the water heater. Since the water heater will be empty, I would recommend turning off the water heater completely. Depending on your water heater, for GAS ones you should turn the dial to OFF and also turn the gas valve to SHUT/OFF. For electric, there should be a switch to turn off somewhere.

    My son broke the knob off the tub while running hot water. Can I use this option to shut water off to the tub to replace faucet or do I have to find the main water shut off valve?

    does it save electricity bill when you turn off the water inlet?

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  4 роки тому

      yes (if your water heater runs on electric), when the water inlet is turned off, no water enters the tank and the water heater will not turn on.

    What if my water heater doesn't have a valve? I can't find anything on top or on the hose.
    Sounds like water is constantly running and loud that's why I want to turn off water supply. But there is no valve on the hose or on top where else would it be?

    Please add the important fact that while servicing the heater, the source of the heat must be off also.

    When u turn off cold should the pressure in hot be none then?

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  3 роки тому

      @B Great question, no, the pressure in the hot water tank will stay even after you shut off the cold water valve. You will have to open a few hot water faucet(s) to drain the hot water or relieve some hot water from the drain plug.

      @@DIYGEEKTEXAS i turned off cold water inlet at hot water heater and went to faucet to turn on hot water and barely anything came out, so do i need to do that to each fixture to completely drain the hot water pipe so i can cut/replace some of it w/o it blowing water on me?

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  3 роки тому

      @@Eastbaypisces Yes as long as nothing is coming out of the faucet for hot anymore you should be good. Keep the faucet hot open during your pipe cut/replace to ensure pressure is always relieved there.

      @@DIYGEEKTEXAS the thing is where the line is that i want to repair is lowest point in house well aleast lower than hot water heater by couple feet, so wouldn't there be water in them or no?

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  3 роки тому

      @@Eastbaypisces Yes there should be water there, especially if you have not drained your water heater. Just to be sure I recommend you drain your water heater using garden hose. The water heater need to be drained and flushed once a year anyways, it is a good time to do it all together. I created a video before, here it is: ua-cam.com/video/rA5pa8yn1vc/v-deo.html (do not refill the water heater until you are done with your pipe repair).

    I don’t get the point of this video I figured he would mention to shut off the boiler first to prevent accidental tank damage if someone was to run out the water inside it.
